If you have holiday travel plans, you’re likely wondering how to stay healthy when you’re away from home. If you’re like me, any disruption in your routine often leads to the sniffles and a general run-down feeling during the trip, or a day or two after returning home. While traveling can be a challenge, it doesn’t have to leave you sick and exhausted if you follow a few of these simple tips.

It is tempting to sleep less while you’re traveling so you can enjoy long days exploring a new destination or celebrating with family and friends. But your body needs seven to eight hours of sleep a night to operate at its peak. If you get much less than that, you’re more apt to get sick. Try to stick to a routine when it comes to eating and sleeping, even when you’re on vacation. You’ll have a far better trip if you stay healthy!

Wash Hands

Whether you’re traveling by air, train, or car, be sure to wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of germs. Every door handle, tray table, and vending machine you touch has the potential to carry germs.  You don’t need to go crazy with antibacterial sprays and gels; just good old warm soapy water will do the trick. Encourage children to wash hands frequently, too.

Food Intolerances

If you have food allergies or intolerances, be sure to plan ahead for holiday travel. Go online before your trip and find a few restaurants that offer food you can eat, so you don’t have to scramble at the last minute. If you’re traveling to visit friends or family, make sure that they know of any dietary restrictions well in advance.

Take some Vitamin C along with you on your trip. Vitamin C has many health benefits. Consider adding a probiotic to help with healthy digestion. New foods and a change in routine can be problematic for people who have sensitive stomachs.

Stay Active

You’re probably envisioning parties and relaxing while on your vacation, but be sure to include some physical activity, too. Walk instead of driving or taking the bus to a tourist destination, take walks after dinner with friends and family, choose to take the stairs instead of elevators or escalators whenever you can. If you’re staying in a hotel, visit the gym room or pool before you head out for the day.
