4 Ways to Style a Turtleneck

January 9, 2014

Love them or hate them – turtlenecks never go out of style. Always chic, the skinny turtleneck is a great staple to any closet.  It keeps you warm, adds a touch of elegance and can be the both the backdrop or pop of color needed in your daily look. Check out the four ways you can refresh your wardrobe just by adding a turtleneck.

Look 1: Daytime Details

You can always rock a turtleneck under a suit, but that is a bit blasé.  Why not head into the office or run some errands while wearing a turtleneck (solid or color-blocked) matched with ankle pants.  Slip on flats, your favorite booties or a pair of pumps and you are set.  Toss on a traditional trench coat or stylish pea coat for a look that is very warm and totally on trend.  A set of stud earrings and an envelope clutch round it all out nicely.

Look 2: Weekend Casual

Weekends are often full of fun activities that keep us busy. Whether you are heading to brunch or a friend’s house you can look relaxed when you style a turtleneck (preferably one with a flowing, angled bottom) with jeans or a funky skirt.  Pencil skirts elevate the look but adding loafers or ballet flats with a denim or moto-inspired jacket keeps it low-key.  Beaded bracelets and a messenger bag complete the look.

Look 3: Date Night

For some people, the turtleneck isn’t an obvious date night choice. It seems too conservative and doesn’t show much skin. But, if you pair a black turtleneck with a mini skirt it is a whole other look entirely. A color-blocked skirt or something with a bold print works best. Add a pair of tights and tall, heeled boots or stiletto heels and it is very va-va-va-voom.  Change it up and break out your faux-leather pants or leggings and rock that turtleneck in a whole other sexy way. Again, the addition of heels and a clutch purse in a bright color make this outfit shine. You’ll want to wear both again and again. Chances are your significant other will too!

Look 4: Cocktail Attire

It’s true!  A fitted black turtleneck worn under a tuxedo jacket and set off by a pair of slim black pants is refined, chic and a whole new way to wear that basic wardrobe staple.  Glittered or bejeweled pumps make it really pop when mixed with a metallic bag and sparkling stud earrings.

Don’t stop there.  You can also embrace the turtleneck to wear extend the life of your summer clothes. It layers well and adds longevity to your favorite warm weather pieces.
