These days, the only thing I wear on my feet when I go outside is my snow boots. But eventually the snow will melt and it will be time for sandals and flip-flops (hard to believe, right?). Before that happens, my feet need a little bit of pampering and attention. Here are four ways to get your feet summertime-ready.

A Spa Day

If your budget allows, schedule a spa day to relax and pamper your feet (and other body parts). You’ll have a chance to spend time in the sauna or jacuzzi, which will help soften your skin. If you’re visiting a mud spa, use the minerals and mud to further soften those rough patches. Even if you can’t afford an entire day, schedule a pedicure to trim your nails, take care of any dry or damaged cuticles, and get a pretty coat of nail polish.

Exfoliate

The key to soft summer feet is to exfoliate the dry, dead skin away. Over time, if we don’t pay attention to our feet, dead skin builds up to form callouses. This is not only unsightly but can lead to foot problems. I use a brown sugar scrub to pamper my feet. It’s very simple to make: mix coarse brown sugar with coconut oil and rub it into your feet. Leave on for ten minutes, then wash away with warm water.

Clip Your Nails

You should clip your nails at least twice a week, being careful not to cut too close because that can cause ingrown nails. While you clip your nails, make sure to look for any that are cracked or peeling, which can indicate a more serious problem. This is especially important for people that have diabetes. Contact your doctor sooner rather than later if you have foot problems or concerns.

Invest in New Shoes

Before summer arrives, examine your sandals, flip-flops, and summer sneakers for wear. The inner and outer soles should be flat and even. Uneven soles can cause foot, hip, and even back problems.  If you need to, treat your feet to a new pair of shoes before the warm weather arrives.

Remember that our feet expand during the day, so try on shoes later in the afternoon rather than first thing in the morning, or allow for some room when you purchase footwear.
