You know that feeling … dry, itchy, flaking on your face, your lips, your hands. It doesn’t matter your skin type – in the winter we all tend to suffer. Even oily and combination skin can feel the same tightness, scaly patches and even eczema, which is an inflammation of the skin.  Keep skin calm all winter long with these tips.

1. Daily Reminders

The best way to fight dry, winter skin is first thing in the morning. As soon as you step into the shower you can combat it by keeping water temps cool and not red hot. Hot water will dry out your skin, so try turning it a bit more toward the cooler side. Keep the shower quick to help keep skin soft. When you turn off the water, remember to moisturize right away. Keep a bottle of lotion right next to the shower so you can apply it all over from head to toe right after you step out.

2. Change It Up

We are creatures of habit – but what we do in the summer for our skin isn’t what works in the winter. Washing your face twice a day in the cold months might be too much, sucking valuable moisture out of your skin. Try using towelettes or a creamy cleanser to clean versus an astringent cleanser and extra water. Apply a thicker day and night time lotion to your face and body too.

3. Healthy Hydration

Hydrate your skin from the inside out in two ways. First, remember to stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids even during the colder months. The air is dry this time of year so keep your fluid intake intact with hot and cold drinks. The heat is on and it dries out the air in your home, office and other indoor spaces. Adding a humidifier will help add moisture to the air and keep your skin from becoming parched.

4.  Maintenance

If you are like me – your beauty ritual includes fighting aging, managing acne, exfoliating and using a weekly facial mask. Many times these products contain ingredients like alpha-hydroxy and benzoyl peroxide that can dry out your skin.  Finding products with ceramides that lock in moisture or contain brown sugar as a natural exfoliate and use a calming face mask versus a clay one, which dries out the skin.   Burt’s Bees Intense Hydration collection has great options in all these categories to keep skin fresh and hydrated.

Keep these four tips at the forefront of your mind this winter and your skin will stay soft and supple all season long.
