Facebook’s new social search feature is based on the company’s mission of making the world more open and connected. They are fulfilling this mission by giving users the “tools to map out their relationships with the people and things they care about.”  Facebook calls this map the graph.

What It Is:

Graph Search is a new way you can make connections while discovering people, places, photos, and interests on Facebook that are relevant to you. The information you’ve shared on Facebook can be included in search results based on the connections you’ve  created and the information you shared with them. Graph Search is currently in beta with a limited preview, so if you don’t currently have it, you can get on the waitlist for it.

How it Works:

Graph Search appears as a larger search bar at the top of each page. Using the social graph, you can search not just by name, but by categories and simple phrases. You can also find content you may have missed, such as photos and videos. For example, you can combine phrases like “videos of TV shows my friends like” or “friends who live in my city.” If you’re traveling, you can use it to search for “hotels near Lakeshore Drive” or “restaurants in New York my friends have liked.”

Better Search Results

The search results given will be unique and different for each person, based on their relationships and the content they have shared on Facebook. When you use it to search, what you enter not only determines the results that you get, but it also determines the title for the results page. Editing this title can allow you to create your own custom view of the content you have shared with your friends.

Graph Search will still respect your privacy. Though it does make information easier to find, you can only see what you could already view elsewhere on Facebook.

How Social Moms Can Benefit

If you are a mom with a home business, this new social graph can make it easier for people to find your business page or information via Facebook.  Another benefit is that it can help you reach new audiences easier. One way to help ensure your business information gets found is to create value-driven content that you market regularly on your Facebook business page. By doing this, you make it more likely for new audiences to discover your content when they need it most.

For moms using Facebook to network, searching for people, places or things of interest to you will become easier and more enjoyable. You will have the tools you need to find and connect with what matters most to you.
