Suspense and Horror: January 2015 Movies

January is rarely a good month for movie releases and that is largely due to the fact that we are tired and broke after the holidays – and we have little energy (or money) for doing much of anything. Still, the show must go on and this month is no exception. While there are a few great titles, a lot of these are fillers. Here’s a look at what’s coming out in theaters January 2015:
Friday, January 2
The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death – This sequel (notably missing Daniel Radcliffe, the star of the first film), takes place in London during World War II and follows the efforts of two school teachers who take refuge with a group of students at Eel Marsh House (bad decision!). It doesn’t take long for them to figure out that they are not alone…
[REC] 4: Apocalypse – The sole survivor of some truly horrific events, Angela Vidal wakes up in a high-security quarantine facility where her every move is monitored. Everyone, including Angela, wants to know what happened to her and whether or not she is carrying a mysterious virus.
Friday, January 9
Selma – Based on a true story, the film follows the plight of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. who fights tirelessly for the voting rights of all people and leads a march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama. The epic turn of events culminated in President Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
Taken 3 – Liam Neeson is back as a man who doesn’t know how to give up. After having to save his abducted daughter in the previous movie, he must hunt down the people who killed his ex-wife after he is framed for the heinous crime.
Friday, January 16
The Wedding Ringer – Everyone wants to look cool at their wedding but some people might need a little more help than others. While planning his wedding to the girl of his dreams, one man turns to a service that specializes in providing a memorable and impressive Best Man for the big day.
Paddington – Who doesn’t love Paddington Bear? This family flick follows his misadventures as he travels to the city in search of a home. Instead of the bustling life he imagined, he feels more alone than ever – until he meets the Brown family. Everything seems to be improving until he comes in contact with a craft museum taxidermist.
Blackhat – If you’re into tech-heavy thrillers, this film about global cybercrime follows a convict and his Chinese and American partners. Together, they work through Chicago, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and Jakarta in hopes of unraveling a high-level cybercrime network.
American Sniper – Imagine juggling the emotional, physical and financial demands of starting a family when you are the world’s most lethal military assassin. How do you keep one world from blending in to the other? Those questions and more are explored in this film based on a true story.
Friday, January 23
Strange Magic – This animated musical’s plot is inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream and uses popular songs from the past six decades to share the triumphs and misadventures of a group of goblins, elves, fairies and imps as they fight over a powerful potion.
The Boy Next Door – A single mom gets more than she bargained for when her son befriends the teenager next door. After feeling attracted to the young man, she attempts to put a stop to the inappropriate relationship but he’s not willing to give up that easily.
Mortdecai – Art dealer, Charlie Mortdecai, must deal with the ire of the British Mi5, his wife, an international terrorist and angry Russians as he travels the world in hopes of recovering a secret code (buried in a stolen painting) that will give him access to a bank account filled with Nazi gold.

Project Almanac – When a high school genius and his friends find the blueprint for a mysterious device, they begin to realize that it has unlimited potential but could put them all in danger.
