October 4, 2012

Fall has arrived and the chilly evening weather has you wanting to cuddle up with popcorn and a movie date. Here’s our pick for top DVD releases in October.

People Like Us (October 2, 2012) – Chris Pine (Star Trek) stars as Sam, a young salesman who loses a major deal on the same day that his father suddenly dies.  Despite being estranged from his family, Sam must go home to put his father’s affairs in order.  While there, he not only reconnects with those he left behind but he also learns that he has a 30-year-old sister he never even knew existed (Elizabeth Banks).

Dark Shadows (October 2, 2012) – The newest Tim Burton film is being released on DVD just in time for Halloween.  Johnny Depp stars in this reworking of the old television classic of the same name.  After being turned into a vampire by a jilted lover (Eva Green), Barnabas Collins (Depp) spends two centuries entombed until he emerges from his coffin in 1972.  The former aristocrat soon discovers that the majestic home he once occupied is now filled with his dysfunctional descendants.

Prometheus (October 9, 2012) – After the Alien movies, Ridley Scott is arguably a master of the genre.  In this latest film, which stars Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender, a team in search for the origins of the human race travel to an undiscovered corner of the universe and, rather than finding how life began, they may have uncovered how it will end.

Rock of Ages (October 9, 2012) – Tom Cruise tried his hand at portraying Stacee Jaxx, a fictional rocker who was made famous by the musical of the same name on Broadway.  Jaxx’s storyline plays alongside that of Sherrie (Julianne Hough), who is trying her hardest to make it in the business.   While the plot is a little thin, the cast is fantastic and includes Catherine Zeta-Jones, Paul Giamatti, Mary J. Blige and Alec Baldwin.  If you loved Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison and Whitesnake, the music in this movie will be rewarding enough.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (October 16, 2012) – In the third installment in the series, the gang is trying to make their way back to their home in New York City.  Along the way, they end up in Europe and must find a way to take cover and, before long, Alex, Marty, Gloria and Melman are part of a traveling circus.  Of course, they find a way to shake things up a bit!

That’s My Boy (October 16, 2012) – When Andy Samberg joined the cast of Saturday Night Live, some people immediately compared him to a young Adam Sandler.  It’s fitting, therefore, that the two play father and son in this comedy about Donny, a man who became a father as a teenager and made almost every mistake imaginable while raising his son, Todd, as a single parent.  After Todd becomes an adult, the father and son part ways and remain separated for years until Donny finds him on the eve of his wedding.

Magic Mike (October 23, 2012) – Women went crazy for this movie about a group of male strippers starring Matthew McConaughey, Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Matt Bomer and Joe Manganiello.  Tatum stars as Mike, a man who spends his days working hard (roofing houses, detailing cars, designing furniture) but turns on the magic late at night.

Tyler Perry’s Madea’s Witness Protection (October 23, 2012) – Tyler Perry may have been busy preparing to star in the movie, Alex Cross (out this fall in theaters), but he still found time to add to the Madea franchise.  This time, the feisty older woman takes in a Wall Street investment banker (and his entire family) after he’s been  set up to take the fall for a mob-backed Ponzi scheme.

Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (October 23, 2012) – In a film that may irk more than a few historians, Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter turns one of America’s greatest presidents (played by Benjamin Walker) into a man who hunts the undead – especially the plot of the master vampire (Rufus Sewell) who plans to take over the United States.
