Mariah Carey has been one of the biggest (and most beloved) divas in the music world for more than two decades now and fans have definitely seen her go through her share of ups and downs over the years. When she found love with much-younger actor/comedian/host, Nick Cannon, people were surprisingly supportive. They seemed to really have a tight bond and have renewed their vows every year since they got married in 2008. When they stuck together through her infertility and high-risk pregnancy as well as his own health scare, it seemed like they were unstoppable.

No couple in Hollywood is immune to divorce rumors – which is probably why people ignored or dismissed the ones swirling around about Nick and Mariah. But now the America’s Got Talent personality confirmed that he and his wife are going through some tough times. In an interview with The Insider, Nick said: “There is trouble in paradise. We have been living in separate houses for a few months … My main focus is my kids,” (3-year-old twins, Moroccan and Monroe). A rep for Mariah simply said that she is “focusing on her children and her upcoming tour.”

How sad is this after all that they have been through?

Back in 1993, Mariah married Tommy Mottola, the former head of Sony Music. When they met, she was so young and impressionable but as her popularity grew, it was clear that she wanted more control over her image and music which, ultimately, led to their divorce in 1998. His controlling behavior was cited as a major reason for their split. After suffering a very public breakdown and basically disappearing for a while, it was encouraging to see how happy she was by the time she married Nick Cannon in 2008.  Three years later, the couple welcomed their twins via c-section after a particularly difficult pregnancy in which the singer suffered from preeclampsia and gestational diabetes.

Despite all of their happiness, it now seems their marriage is on the rocks. Sure, they hadn’t been seen out in public together in months but they also have two small children, Mariah’s been working on her new album and Nick has several jobs. In fact, his coverage of the All-Star Weekend kept him from being able to spend Valentine’s Day with his wife, this year (a fact she made clear during an interview with Entertainment Tonight). While she tried to downplay her disappointment, she couldn’t help complain during an interview with Ryan Seacrest. She said, “The abandoner is going to be somewhere else. And by abandoner, I mean Nicholas Scott Cannon. I was giving him beep about it all day. I’ll be alone with the babies, but they’re my Valentines anyway.”  Obviously, Nick’s hectic schedule, which had already caused him to have health problems, has led to issues at home.

Just a few months later, Nick was on The Howard Stern Show, where he definitely overshared. He revealed: “It’s the small things [that Mariah gets mad at]. She doesn’t care when I talk about our sex life, because our sex life is amazing. She’s one of the most beautiful women in the world … When we bring up other people’s names, and I understand why… I got in a lot of trouble and I got to stop talking about my past.”

This was a month after “Big Boy TV” challenged him to name five famous people he had slept with. Rising to the occasion, he first named Mariah and then added “Christina Milian, Nicole Scherzinger, Selita Ebanks … oh, Kim Kardashian!”  He told Howard Stern that Mariah doesn’t even know who Kim Kardashian is but that his wife simply dislikes him spending time talking about his past lovers in general. He said he apologized for hurting her feelings and being insensitive but, clearly, things are not going well at all.

The couple sold their Bel Air mansion for $10 million this past July and their vacation home in the Bahamas is also listed. The rumor mill suggests that this is part of an agreement that, once finalized, will lead to their divorce.

Every couple goes through rough patches but many can recover. Hopefully, they can give things some time and see how they really feel.
