December 5, 2013

This holiday season, there isn’t much in the way of festive films to choose from. Fortunately, there are plenty of other movies coming out from all genres.  In fact, on Christmas day alone you will have to decide which big name flick you’ll be seeing (unless you want to stay at the theater all day and see them all!).

Here are some notable titles to get you through to the new year!

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (December 13)

Martin Freeman, Ian McKellan and Benedict Cumberbatch star in the second movie in the Hobbit trilogy and Peter Jackson has clearly worked his magic again.  Fans of the popular J.R.R. Tolkien classic (and, of course, Lord of the Rings) will love this tale detailing Bilbo Baggins’ discovery of the coveted ring.

American Hustle (December 18)

This film boasts an incredible all-star cast and is being touted as a cross between Argo and Silver Linings Playbook, both of which were recognized heavily during the last awards season.  Can American Hustle recapture the magic?  The movie stars Christian Bale, Bradley Cooper, Jeremy Renner, Amy Adams and Jennifer Lawrence all dressed down in the most disco-tastic garb we’ve seen in years!

Saving Mr. Banks (December 20)

Have you ever wondered how the story of Mary Poppins came to exist?  Is the old Disney film starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke one of your all-time favorites?  If so, you will probably love Saving Mr. Banks.  The film chronicles the challenges Walt Disney faced when trying to convince the writer to allow him to add whimsy and magic to her wonderful story.

Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues

Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, Steve Carrell and Christina Applegate are back for another round of ridiculousness in Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues.  There’s no need to even try to explain the plot other than to say that Ron Burgundy (Ferrell) is the worst news anchor in history but he’s also incredibly funny.

August: Osage County  (Dec 25)

The play of the same name has won acclaim and awards over the years and this film adaptation hopes to attain the same level of success.  The film includes some of the most talented names in Hollywood including Meryl Streep, Sam Shepherd, Julia Roberts, Ewan McGregor, Juliette Lewis, Dermot Mulroney and Abigail Breslin.  The story revolves around a family in the mid-west who converge at the matriarch’s house in the wake of a tragedy.  I previewed this film last month at the Virginia Film Festival and, really, it feels like a play on the big-screen.  The story had strength but it will be interesting to see how moviegoers respond.

The Wolf of Wall Street (Dec 25)

Leonardo Di Caprio, Jon Favreau, Matthew McConaughey and Jonah Hill star in this story about greed and corruption within the world’s most notorious financial district.  There are high hopes for the film that has reunited director, Martin Scorsese, with his golden boy, DiCaprio.

The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (Dec 25)

During a season of heavier films, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty brings hope and some levity while remaining thought-provoking.  The title character, played by Ben Stiller, works at Time Magazine and sees so many pictures of people doing amazing things while he settles for a life that is less than fulfilling. Motivated by his inability to act upon a crush (Jennifer Aniston), Walter embarks on a fantastic mind-bending journey.

While there aren’t really any traditional holiday movies to choose from, take a break from all the shopping and cooking and enjoy a great night out at the theater!
