It’s October which, traditionally, has been a great month for horror movies but, this year, we will all have to stretch our imagination a little for our scares. While some of the titles will give you a spook, only one really counts as true horror.

With Halloween just weeks away, here’s a look at a few movies that, depending on your definition, could be downright horrifying.

Gravity

This film, which is already in theaters, follows two astronauts (played by Sandra Bullock and George Clooney) who, after their space shuttle is destroyed, are stranded in space.  Can you possibly imagine how terrifying that would be?  The darkness. The vastness. The hopelessness. Aside from the scare factor, there’s another great reason to check out Gravity – it’s getting amazing reviews!

Machete Kills

Danny Trejo is back as ex-Federale agent, Machete, who has been recruited by the President of the United States of America (Carlos Estevez … also known as Charlie Sheen!) to complete a mission that no one else can – he must stop a billionaire arms dealer with plans of spreading war and anarchy throughout the world.

Carrie

Yes, the original film, starring Sissy Spacek is being remade but, hopefully, they will do this justice.  This reboot stars Chloe Moretz (Kick-Ass 2) in the title role of a girl who has telekinetic abilities but must deny them due to the harsh punishments of her religious zealot of a mother. Unfortunately, when the kids at school decide to pull a prank on this social outcast, Carrie lets everyone know exactly what she can do.

Captain Phillips

Tom Hanks is already generating Oscar buzz for his turn in this based-on-true-events story.  The plot revolves around the 2009 hijacking of the Maersk Alabama, a U.S. container ship commanded by Captain Richard Phillips (Hanks). When a crew of Somali pirates board the vessel, the group’s leader and the ship’s captain come to grips with the reality of their positions on the ship and in the world on land.

It’s hard to say but being trapped in space with little hope of returning home and/or being taken hostage by pirates qualify as terrifying scenarios just as much as a hormonal, vengeful, telekinetic teenager.  To be honest, the idea of Charlie Sheen being the President of the United States is also a scary thought.

Oh well, at least we can walk out of the theater and back to our real lives, in the end.  Enjoy the movies!
