September 6, 2012

Summer has nearly ended, which means it’s time to get back to our regular routines. As the temperatures start to dip, having great movies on hand can make staying indoors a little more enjoyable.  Here’s our pick for top DVD releases this month.

The Five-Year Engagement (September 4, 2012) – This romantic comedy stars Jason Segel and Emily Blunt as a couple who become engaged but find themselves continually delaying their wedding for one reason or another.  After five long years, will they take that walk down the aisle?  You’ll have to watch the movie to find out.

Piranha DD (September 4, 2012) – Anyone over the age of 30 remembers those original Piranha movies and now that they’ve been rebooted, the action is in 3D.  The flesh-eating fish are on the prowl again and this time they are targeting the visitors at The Big Wet Water Park.  The film has an all-star cast including Danielle Panabaker, Gary Busey, Christopher Lloyd and David Hasselhoff.

Harry Potter Wizard’s Collection (September 7, 2012) – relive the magical adventures of the Boy Who Lived by watching the action from the very first Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone movie all the way till the closing moments of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

What to Expect When You’re Expecting (September 11, 2012) – Almost every pregnant woman has owned a copy of “What to Expect When You’re Expecting” but now there’s a movie too  Sure, it’s a lot less information and instructional but it’s definitely entertaining.  The film – starring Jennifer Lopez, Cameron Diaz, Elizabeth Banks and Brooklyn Decker – follows the lives of women who go through fertility issues, pregnancy and adoption in their quest to experience motherhood.

Snow White and the Huntsman (September 11, 2012) – Kristin Stewart stars as Snow White in this epic and modern retelling of a classic tale.  We’ve all heard and seen it before – the evil queen (Charlize Theron) is out to destroy the only person in the land who is fairer than she – but the twist is that Snow White has been training with a huntsman (Chris Hemsworth) and is more than ready to defend herself.  The film was heralded for the visual effects but, unfortunately, it has been overshadowed by the revelation that, during filming, Stewart was having an affair with director, Rupert Sanders.  Could make watching the movie a little more interesting.

Katy Perry The Movie: Part of Me (September 18, 2012) – While the documentary didn’t quite perform as well as Katy Perry would have hoped, this inside, behind-the-scenes look at the private life of one of the world’s biggest pop stars is a must-see for fans.

The Cabin in the Woods (September 18, 2012) – So many of us have gone away for the weekend to some remote place and felt like we were about to live through some horror movie.  Well, this is one of those films but, just when the young college friends realize that their misfortunes are being controlled by technicians, things take an even more unexpected turn.   Produced by Joss Whedon, the film stars Richard Jenkins, Jesse Williams and Chris Hemsworth.

Marvel’s The Avengers (September 25, 2012) – On their own, the Iron Man, Hulk, Thor and Captain America flicks were pretty good but when you combine all of those heroes and throw in Hawkeye, Black Widow, Nick Fury and Loki and you’ve got one big superhero movie!  The movie, also directed by Joss Whedon, stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo and Scarlett Johansson.
