Rielle Hunter became one of the world’s most famous (and infamous) mistresses at the height of John Edwards’ popularity. When John Kerry ran for president and chose Edwards as a running mate, it seemed almost as though people would have preferred the latter as their commander-in-chief. He seemed to have it all and some compared his dashing good looks to those of John F. Kennedy.
Sadly, it was revealed that his wife, Elizabeth, was battling cancer and, after losing one child years earlier, the nation poured out their support to this family. When he suddenly left the public eye after continuing to campaign following her diagnosis, many assumed he was simply tending to his family’s needs but, the truth was that something much deeper was going on.
When the pictures of Rielle Hunter’s baby daughter surfaced, there was no denying the resemblance – she was the product of an affair. Rather than deny everything and accept responsibility for her own actions, Hunter declared her love for Edwards and lashed out at the public and Elizabeth, a woman she characterized as being an unloving and unsupportive wife.
Following Elizabeth’s death, many speculated that Edwards and Hunter would rekindle their romance but, after she published a tell-all book, Edwards quickly distanced himself. Even Hunter seemed taken aback by his reaction but she had, after all, attacked the mother of his children while chronicling the details of their tawdry relationship. The book sales were abysmal and, now, it seems that Ms. Hunter is ready to turn over a new leaf.
The former “other woman” has issued a public apology. She admits that she “behaved badly” and that it has taken her a long time to admit what we all already knew – she made some really poor decisions. Describing herself as selfish, she takes responsibility for hurting “Elizabeth and her kids” as well as their extended families and friends.
In a curious move which possibly questionable motives, she has decided to re-publish her book but, this time, she will annotate all of her regrets and mistakes. The comments on boards across the article have been surprisingly positive and supportive of Rielle’s decision to finally take ownership of her actions.
Her newly revised book, In Hindsight, What Really Happened: The Revised Edition: John Edwards, Our Daughter and Me, is on sale right now. Only time will tell whether this version will sell better than the original.
