Every year, it seems like many of the “new releases” are actually remakes of highly successful movies from years past.  Sometimes, the newer version is an improvement on the original but, usually, classics should just be left alone.  Wondering which films are getting rebooted this year?  Check out this list:

Oz the Great and Powerful

There are few movies that can rival the staying power of The Wizard of Oz.  The 1939 film catapulted Judy Garland to stardom and many things from the movie have found a permanent place in popular culture.  How many times have you heard someone say “There’s No Place Like Home” or launch into the iconic tune, “We’re Off to See The Wizard?”  While it’s not centered around the same storyline, moviegoers will undoubtedly draw parallels between Oz the Great and Powerful and the adventures of Dorothy, the Cowardly Lion, the Tin Man and Scarecrow (and Toto too!).  Starring James Franco, Mila Kunis and Michelle Williams, the plot follows the journey of a magician who “must choose between becoming a good man or a great one.”  It hits theaters March 8, 2013.

Carrie

Who could ever forget the image of a blood-soaked young girl who believed that, despite being an outcast, she had been named the Homecoming Queen.  Sissy Spacek brought the chilling role to life in 1976 and horrified audiences watched this once docile wallflower exact her revenge on her classmates through telekinesis.  Those are big shoes to fill but MGM has cast Kick-Ass potty mouth, Chloe Grace Moretz, to breathe new life into Carrie.  Undoubtedly, her tormentors will use more modern tools, such as social media sites, to bully her.  The film premieres on March 15, 2013.

Robocop

Do you remember how cool Robocop was when it came out in 1987?  The concept was so outlandish – a beloved cop is gunned down but, rather than let him die, he’s secretly used in an experimental procedure that turned him into a half-man/half-robot all-business police officer.  He had perfect aim, quick reflexes and, well, he just looked cool.  Looking back, the effects seem pretty silly but it was amazing at the time.  It will be interesting to see how this remake takes shape with all the advances we’ve made in that area.  So far, Samuel L. Jackson and Gary Oldman are attached to the project which has a tentative release date of August 9, 2013.

Mad Max: Fury Road

Mel Gibson established himself as an action star in the futuristic original which only made his role in Lethal Weapon as a crazy cop even more believable.  It’s hard to imagine that anyone else could possibly take on the role but, if there is anyone who could pull it off, it’s Tom Hardy.  After his convincing performance as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, he won’t have to do much to prove his ruggedness to audiences.  With Charlize Theron and Zoe Kravitz rounding out the cast, this remake has real potential.  The theatrical release is expected sometime later this year.

What remakes have you loved and hated over the years?
