Unique in both her musical and personal style, Kesha (who no longer has the $ as the s in her name) had no trouble attracting fans. Her songs are known for their infectious, fun beats and the promotion of individuality and having fun. Unfortunately, according to recently filed court documents, things have been less than stellar for her behind the scenes.
Many were surprised when Kesha checked herself into a rehab facility at the beginning of the year to address an eating disorder. While in treatment, it appears she opened up to the therapists about what led to her struggles … and it wasn’t pretty.
Kesha claims she suffered sexual, physical, verbal and emotional abuse at the hands of her producer, Dr. Luke, for a decade. A lawsuit filed against him alleges that his actions nearly cost the singer her life. She states that the sexual advances began almost immediately after she signed with him at just 18 years old and deteriorated into him forcing her to use drugs and alcohol. In one particularly horrific story, Kesha says that she woke up the morning after taking “sober pills” given to her by Dr. Luke in his bed naked “sore, sick … and with no memory of how she got there.”
If that wasn’t enough, Dr. Luke supposedly said things like “you are not that pretty, you are not that talented, you are just lucky to have me” and compared her size to a refrigerator. The suit also describes an incident in which she felt forced to flee, barefoot into the mountains after he began “violently thrashing his arms at her.”
Some have asked why she’s suing the producer and the answer seems relatively straightforward – she wants the judge to free her from her contract with Dr. Luke. Kesha’s lawyer, Mark Geragos, explained to TMZ: “This lawsuit is a wholehearted effort by Kesha to regain control of her music career and her personal freedom after suffering for ten years as a victim of mental manipulation, emotional abuse and an instance of sexual assault at the hands of Dr. Luke.”
The singer’s legal representative added: “The facts presented in our lawsuit paint a picture of a man who is controlling and willing to commit horrible acts of abuse in an attempt to intimidate an impressionable, talented, young female artist into submission for his personal gain. Kesha is focused on moving her life and her career beyond this terrible time.”
Dr. Luke has responded by filing his own lawsuit against Kesha, alleging that she’s lying about everything and tried to extort him by threatening to go public with her allegations. The 41-year-old songwriter/producer has worked with many stars since his days as the lead guitarist on Saturday Night Live beginning in 1997.
This case will probably be dragged out for a while and, in the meantime, it’s likely that even more ugly information will be brought to light. What do you think about this situation? Is this a ploy to get out of a contract or is Kesha truly a survivor of abuse?
