I get it. I do … a commercial is a commercial.

Companies make them so that we’ll watch them, talk about them, and share them. And then, of course, buy their stuff.

But sometimes they put aside the old stand-bys of “sexy” people in less clothes and flashy sequences of “cool” to instead, say something important and inspire us. I’m happy to watch those! They’re the best kind.

Here are a handful of commercials that took the time and energy to send a pro-girl message.

The most recent one of these to circle the web is the Always #LikeAGirl campaign. In it, people of all ages are asked to do something “like a girl.” The older people bounce, play with their hair, and flap their arms. The young girls don’t. Why is it that we use “girl” to mean less?

Cover Girls’ #GirlsCan commercial packs in all sorts of amazing women who have smashed through stereotypes.

This one, from GoldieBlox, shows us a trio of young girls using all of their “princess toys” to engineer the coolest remote ever!

As we watch a little girl grow up hearing subtle messages, Verizon reminds us to tell her she’s pretty AND pretty brilliant. (Although I’m going to be honest and say that, while I totally tell my daughter she’s brilliant, I might lose my cool over glitter strewn about the bedroom!)

Dove’s Self Esteem Campaign really packs a punch. They’ve put out so many great commercials; it’s hard to choose just one. This one flashes through all of the messages sent to women by media and encourages us to talk to our daughters before the beauty industry does.

If you’re a grown-up girl and haven’t seen Dove’s “Real Beauty Sketches,” take the time to watch it!
