September 21, 2017

It’s fall, which means that pumpkin spice is back, along with hoodies, changing leaves, and cool (but not too cold!) temperatures. It’s also time for the fall movie lineup.  Some years are less impressive than others, but 2017 looks like it will be exciting.

Many people are eagerly anticipating Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but that doesn’t come out until December. Fortunately, there are plenty of great options to thrill and delight us until the holiday season—and they’re hitting box-offices soon.

September

It – Early reviews suggest that this latest adaptation of Stephen King’s 1986 novel is excellent—and truly terrifying. If you’re scared of clowns, the dark, or even red balloons, you may want to skip this one. Cast: Bill Skarsgård, Jaeden Lieberher, Finn Wolfhard. Release date: September 8.

mother! – The cast and crew working on this film have been tight-lipped about the plot, but all claim it will be scary. All we know is that the story will follow a couple who have unexpected guests—and things don’t go well. Cast: Jennifer Lawrence, Javier Bardem, Michelle Pfeiffer, Ed Harris. Release date: September 15.

Battle of the Sexes – This film tackles issues of feminism and equality, following legendary tennis player, Billie Jean King, as she prepares for a high-stakes match against Bobby Riggs. Cast: Emma Stone, Steve Carell, Andrea Riseborough, Elisabeth Shue. Release date: September 22.

Stronger – In what’s bound to be a tearjerker, Stronger tells the story of Jeff Bauman, who lost both legs during the Boston Marathon attack. Bauman was waiting for his financé at the finish line when explosions ripped through the crowd. Cast: Jake Gyllenhaal and Tatiana Maslany. Release date: September 22.

Our Souls at Night – Love stories don’t have to only focus on 20-somethings at the beginning of their lives, as this movie proves. The plot, based on the 2015 novel by Kent Haruf, tells the story of two Hollywood legends who reunite onscreen for the first time in years after they both have lost their spouses. Cast: Jane Fonda, Robert Redford, Judy Greer, and Matthias Schoenaerts. Release date: September 29.

October

Blade Runner 2049 – The original Blade Runner starring Harrison Ford is a cult classic, so it’s not surprising that there’s tremendous interest in this follow-up with Ryan Gosling in the lead role. All we know is that it picks up 30 years after the first film ended—which promises to be interesting because people still debate the original ending! Cast: Ryan Gosling, Harrison Ford, Jared Leto, Robin Wright, Ana de Armas. Release date: October 6.

Marshall – If you’re looking for a cradle-to-the-grave story about Supreme Court Justice, Thurgood Marshall, you won’t find it here. The film focuses instead on his days as a lawyer for the NAACP, and his struggle to defend a black man accused of raping a white woman. Cast: Chadwick Boseman, Josh Gad, Kate Hudson, Dan Stevens, and Sterling K. Brown. Release date: October 13.

November

Thor: Ragnarok – We’ve been waiting a while for another Thor movie and, finally, after months of great marketing, it’s almost here. This version includes some new cast members, including a goth-looking female villain! Cast: Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo, Tessa Thompson, Tom Hiddleston, Cate Blanchett, Jeff Goldblum. Release date: November 3.

Murder in the Orient Express: The murder mystery novel originally released by Agatha Christie in 1934 is getting new life in this re-adaptation. Ingrid Bergman earned an Oscar for her performance in the first film so it will be interesting to see how this remake compares. Cast: Kenneth Branagh, Michelle Pfeiffer, Johnny Depp, Daisy Ridley, Judi Dench, Penélope Cruz, Willem Dafoe, Josh Gad. Release date: November 10.

Justice League – Considering how Superman versus Batman was panned by critics and audiences alike, there’s understandable doubt that this movie about DC Comics heroes can compete with Marvel’s Avengers. At least they have Wonder Woman, right? Cast: Ben Affleck, Henry Cavill, Gal Gadot, Ezra Miller, Jason Momoa, Ray Fisher. Release date: November 17.

Wonder – Based on R.J. Palacio’s 2012 novel, this is the story of a child who makes his way through life with a facial deformity. The trailers for this will make you cry, so expect the movie to do the same. Cast: Julia Roberts, Owen Wilson, and Jacob Tremblay. Release date: November 17.
