All of the major holidays are behind us for a while. It’s officially summer, but it sure doesn’t feel like it! Throughout the country, each state is handling the pandemic in a different way which is shaping our experiences. That, of course, is on top of everything else that’s going on. It can feel very much like we’re divided as a nation—because we are in so many ways. One thing that can still pull us together? Celebrity news! Let’s review the latest.

Nick Cordero Dies of COVID-19

When Broadway star, Nick Cordero, first showed signs of COVID-19 in early March, his main symptom was fatigue. “He could not get out of bed, so tired, no energy, that was really his only symptom,” his wife, Amanda Kloots, told BuzzFeed News at the time. By the end of the month, though, he was hospitalized because he was “having a hard time breathing.”

After testing negative for the virus twice, he tested positive the third time. The downward spiral began as doctors informed Cordero he’d be put on a ventilator. He called to give his wife the news and said, “I love you, they have decided to put me on a ventilator with a breathing tube and I’m gonna go unconscious and I don’t know when I’ll wake up, and I don’t know when I’ll be able to talk to you again.”

For a few days, his health stabilized but by mid April, he was “fighting for his life.” He had developed a lung infection, high fever, low blood pressure, cardiac arrhythmia, and even cardiac arrest. After undergoing emergency surgery and being connected to a machine to “support his heart and lungs,” blood stopped circulating to his right leg. The following week, it had to be amputated.

Towards the end of April, he tested negative for COVID-19, but while the virus was no longer detectable in his system, the damage it caused was far from over. He was given a temporary pacemaker, then a new lung infection spread to his blood, giving him “septic shock.” His lungs had become “severely damaged to look almost like he’s been a smoker for 50 years… There are holes in his lungs where obviously you don’t want holes to be.”

Nearly two weeks after undergoing a tracheostomy, Cordero woke from his medically-induced coma on May 12. He could follow commands but was incredibly weak. Doctors had to clean out his lungs daily, he suffered “two mini strokes” and “needed resuscitation.” For the first 79 days of this nightmarish experience, though, he had to go through it alone due to safety guidelines and visitor restrictions at the hospital.

When Kloots was finally able to visit, she shared a photo of them holding hands. She explained that her husband could answer yes or no questions with his eyes, but could not speak due to the ventilator and that he was still too weak to move. His muscles atrophied and he lost 65 lbs. On July 2, the temporary pacemaker was removed and his wife, a personal trainer, was forced to address some of the criticism and “negativity” she’d been facing online.

“My husband has been in the ICU for 91 days. We don’t know if he’ll make it. I hope and pray every single day of my life that he does. But, if he does make it, I don’t know when he’ll be able to work again,” she explained. “I have a family. I have bills. I have no idea what Nick’s hospital bills are going to be. I haven’t even tried to wrap my head around that yet. I have a mortgage. I have a car payment. I have a son that is one years old that I want to send to college one day, or at least give him whatever I can.”

While it’s easy for outsiders to judge, many can understand why Kloots did not give up on her husband. During a sit-down with CBS This Morning she said, “They told me four times that he won’t survive. Sometimes even he won’t survive through the night, but he has. He’s fighting. I see it every day. Nick’s doctor sees it. And as long as he’s in there and fighting, I’ll continue to fight with him.”

Nick Cordero had no pre-existing health conditions. They do not know how he contracted COVID-19. “This disease does not only affect old people,” she wrote. “This is real. A perfectly healthy 41 year old man!” In support of Cordero’s family, including his wife and one-year-old son, Elvis, a GoFundMe page was created to raise funds to cover his medical bills. We offer our condolences.

Hilary Duff Slams Holiday Party-Goers

When Hilary Duff, her husband Matthew Koma, and their daughter, Banks, 21 months, went for a Fourth of July drive, the actress was angered after seeing people disobeying social distancing mandates by hosting a “raging party” during the coronavirus pandemic.

“A—holes,” Duff wrote on Instagram. “No masks (of course). Girls in bathing suits and louboutins waiting to get in like a line at a club 🙄 After @matthewkoma and I told Banks she’s too cool to ever need to do that we were steaming. California is in bad shape (in so many ways) but doesn’t everyone think we all want to go out freely and travel and enjoy summer🤷🏼‍♀️.”

She didn’t hold back on what she sees as the underlying problem here, either. “It really seems like Americans just don’t care about each other…somehow this pandemic has turned into a political stance between parties…that’s a head scratcher for me. Other countries have come together in a beautiful way to contain or be Covid free. It’s embarrassing that we are worse than ever because people need to party and Karens won’t wear masks!”

In a final statement, which appears to be a dig at Kanye West announcing his presidential bid, Duff ended her post by saying, “Oh and I’m running for President.”

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Take on Racial Injustice

Around the world, people have joined the Black Lives Matter movement, and you can now count Meghan Markle and Prince Harry among them. The Queen’s Commonwealth Trust (QCT) recently hosted a video conversation about the fight for equality. The couple spoke with young leaders from across the globe on this important issue.

Harry, 35, and Meghan, 38, who serve as the president and vice-president of the QCT, respectively, discussed the necessity of challenging unconscious bias in order to attain racial justice. “We can’t deny or ignore the fact that all of us have been educated to see the world differently,” Harry said. “However, once you start to realize that there is that bias there, then you need to acknowledge it, you need to do the work to become more aware … so that you can help stand up for something that is so wrong and should not be acceptable in our society today.”

“It’s not just in the big moments, it’s in the quiet moments where racism and unconscious bias lies and thrives,” Megan added. “It makes it confusing for a lot of people to understand the role that they play in that, both passively and actively.”

As a member of the British royals, Harry didn’t shy away from the role his family has played in the history of injustice. He openly stated: “When you look across the Commonwealth, there is no way that we can move forward unless we acknowledge the past … We all acknowledge there’s so much more still to do. It’s not going to be easy and in some cases, it’s not going to be comfortable … And guess what, everybody benefits.”

The couple asserted that the Black Lives Matter movement has allowed people to see “the wrong” in our society and emphasized the importance of listening. They also promised to do “everything from our end” to help the younger generation and said, “Keep up the incredible work and know that we are right there with you, standing in solidarity. We’re going to get there … and we have a lot of renewed faith and energy in that having had this conversation.”
