End-of-Summer Box-Office: 5 Must-See Movies!

The summer is sadly coming to an end but there is still a whole month before the season is officially over.  Enjoy those last days by checking out some great movies that are currently playing or will be released in the next couple weeks.

Lee Daniels’ The Butler

When this film was released on August 16, 2013, it surprised many by winning the box-office that weekend.  Audiences came out in droves to see this true story about a butler who served eight presidents in the White House and witnessed some of the nation’s biggest events – the Civil Rights Movement, assassination of President Kennedy, Vietnam and more – from behind the scenes.  The all-star cast includes Forrest Whitaker, Oprah Winfrey, Alack Rickman and Jane Fonda.

The World’s End

Simon Pegg and Nick Frost, a pair you may be familiar with from Shaun of the Dead (2004) and Hot Fuzz (2007), star in the final installment of Edgar Wright’s trilogy.  Five childhood friends plan to reunite at “The World’s End” and one genius decides they should embark on a drinking marathon.  They reminisce about the past, compare notes about their current lives but soon realize that the future of mankind has been put at risk by an unknown enemy – Opens today, August 23, 2013.


Vin Diesel is reprising his first iconic role in the latest chapter in the sage which began with Pitch Black (2000) and The Chronicles of Riddick (2004).  It’s been a while but it doesn’t look like time has had any effect on Diesel.  In Riddick, the antihero is an escaped convict on every bounty hunter’s radar.  After being left to die on a sun-scorched planet, he fights off lethal alien predators but soon realizes that the only way to survive is to activate an emergency beacon and call for help.  He might get saved but will he also get captured?  – In theatres September 6, 2013.


Academy Award winner Jennifer Hudson (Dreamgirls) and Academy Award nominee Terrence Howard (Hustle & Flow), take on a love story of epic proportions.  Winnie (Hudson), leaves a remote tribal village behind and embarks on a journey in the big city of Johannesburg, South Africa.  Before long, she finds herself in love with the rising political star, Nelson Mandela (Howard) who is imprisoned for protesting the injustices of an Apartheid government.  In the years that followed, she fought tirelessly to continue his message of peace, pushed for equality and thrived in the worst of conditions. This is the story of “the mother of the nation – Opens September 6, 2013.

The Family

Luc Besson (Taken, Transporter) cast some heavy-hitters to star in this off-beat action comedy.  After relocated to a quiet town in France, a mafia boss (Robert DeNiro), his wife (Michelle Pfeiffer) and their kids (Dianna Agron and John D’Leo) blow their own cover despite the best efforts of an agent (Tommy Lee Jones) helping them build new lives in the witness protection program.
