“Catching Fire,” “Thor” and More: Fall 2013 Movie Preview

Some years, the fall movie lineup isn’t as great as others but the upcoming season is jam-packed with promising titles and highly-anticipated sequels. Of course, we can’t list all of them but here are some films to keep on your radar in the coming weeks and months.
Riddick

In the third installment in the trilogy, Riddick is left for dead on a scary, sun-scorched planet. He soon finds himself being hunted by predatory aliens and, although he’s a wanted man, he knows that activating the emergency beacon will be the only way he can survive. Once all the bounty hunters realize where to find him, he will have to find new ways to make it out alive.

This terrifying film might be a bit early for Halloween but it makes up for it by hitting theaters on Friday the 13th. The original cast returns for this sequel as the Lambert family who try to close their connection to the spirit world by uncovering a childhood secret.

This dark comedy follows the adventures of a Mafia boss and his family after they are relocated to a sleepy town in France as part of the Witness Protection Program. The only problem is that they continue to bring attention to themselves by resolving conflicts the “family” way.

This film is about every parent’s worst nightmare. The Dovers and the Birches are neighbors who have become close friends over the years. They spend Thanksgiving dinner together but, sadly, after going out to play together, their two youngest daughters go missing. There is a clear suspect but the police are unable to hold him prompting one father to take matters into his own hands.

This adaptation of a true story is already generating Oscar buzz. In 2009, Captain Richard Phillips was manning a ship and that was overtaken by Somali pirates. The MV Maersk Alabama became the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in two hundred years.

The original film became such a classic that it’s hard to imagine anything coming close to it but a remake of the Stephen King horror tale is coming to theaters. The plot follows a shy, social outcast who has been sheltered by her crazy, religious mother. When the popular kids push her too far at her senior prom, it becomes clear that this quiet girl has supernatural powers.
Thor: The Dark World
