There are many types of New Year’s resolutions. Every year around this time, people start thinking about ways to improve their lives. Some people want to lose weight and exercise. Others pledge to get their finances under control or declutter and clean their homes.

But, for me, and many others, the goal is to let go of negativity. I’d like to live a life that’s happier with fewer negative thoughts because I think it will help lift my mood. And, it will help with anxiety.

So, here are a few tips that will help you let go of the negative thoughts in your life. Then, you can move forward and create peace.

Acknowledge your thoughts

No one is saying that you don’t have a right to be hurt or upset. If someone truly did something to hurt your feelings, acknowledge that. Give yourself permission to be unhappy, hurt, or upset. Then, put those thoughts away and move on. Focusing on them helps no one, and it stops you from being happy.

Eliminate toxic relationships

If you have a relationship with someone that is truly toxic, it’s time to let it go. If you can’t completely eliminate the relationship from your life, try to be with the person as little as possible. Don’t answer their phone calls, and disconnect from them on social media.

Try not to take things personally

Not every comment that you hear or read is about you. Sometimes, we assume that things we hear were about us. But, they probably aren’t. And, even if they are, someone else’s opinions of you doesn’t change who and what you are unless you let them.

Replace negative self-talk with positive

Instead of telling yourself you’re not good enough or you can’t do something or you’re not worth good things, find positive statements instead. When you find yourself repeating negative comments, stop yourself, and repeat your positive self-love statement instead.

Learn to forgive

One of the biggest ways we carry around negativity is by not forgiving those we think have hurt us in the past. Forgiveness isn’t easy. But, if you are going to eliminate negative thoughts, you will need to forgive those that have hurt you. Take the time to forgive and if possible to reconcile with them today.

Eliminating negativity isn’t easy. And, it probably won’t disappear immediately the first few times that you try it. But, if you consistently follow a few of these tips, you’ll find you have more positive thoughts in the future.
