This coat quite honestly and I don’t care if it’s 104° out, makes me feel like I am in a movie and I really belong there. Maybe it’s because I’m from Florida and I’m not used to this kind of outerwear.
But I don’t think so. I mean come on I can wear it with boots with a dress with nothing I’m still feel like I look amazing. By the way I do go up to Colorado and it is really warm so it has actual technical value too.
But I have gone out in the freezing cold in shorts because they look good. So besides yes it keeps me very very warm but it is just so perfect. Additionally the huge Hood is great for little quick cat naps or for when your cohort wants to shut you up??they can just drop it right over your head and problem solved! To be honest it is really so great the only thing I can say about it in regards to reviews, is that I didn’t seem,, to me that it ran bigger or smaller.
it seems to be right on point. Currently it’s not cold enough in Florida yet to wear it but it isn’t a display case in my living room and everyone loves it. Seriously though I’ve had to break it out twice so far and I practically have to chain it to myself, everyone loves it.
The price obviously is great too. I just really can’t find a negative and I really wish I could to kind of even out this review but. Okay wait I got one. The tag is kind of hard to get off. That’s all I got.
The best by the way does not zip out so it’s not like two jackets and one which I did think that maybe the inside best did about but it doesn’t and at first I thought that was kind of a negative but actually it makes it lay really really much smoother.
Before I start like drooling over myself, I’m going to wrap it up by saying I really, and I mean I really love this coat.
I love softshell jackets, because you get extra warmth, without the stiffness & bulk. This is a very well made coat, and it looks much more expensive than it was. All of the details are well done, and it doesn’t look ‘cheap’.
I was debating between a L & XL, but got the XL, to allow for bulkier sweaters, underneath. The XL was way too big. I tried just pulling the waist tighter, but then is flared out funny at the bottom, and it was still huge on top.
The XL was so big, I’m actually hoping the lg isn’t also too big. One negative is that the neck is extremely wide. Zipped all the way up, I could fit my hand through the gap at the neck. In colder weather you would definitely need a scarf.
I wanted to just exchange for a lg, but Zulily only issues store credit. Now I’m waiting for them to receive the return, and process the credit, so I can rebuy the Lg. I’m hoping it’s still in stock, by the time I get the credit.
They’re not exactly fast about processing. **Note: Zulily does not credit freight, they charge you for the return, and then you need to pay freight AGAIN, for the replacement. That takes the ‘great’ deal, down to just an ‘ok’ deal.
It’s absolutely perfect. I am 5’5” 125. I am a size large because of my chest and long arms. I have a disability I can’t get into but Part of it means the more weight I wear for clothing the colder I get.
If it’s a wool jacket or a thin cotton shirt I will be warmer in the shirt because of my condition. I don’t have normal circulation. Anyway I like fuzzy things so I can wear a tank top under and stay warm in the winter when I have to go see my sons sports.
I am in love with this jacket. It’s warm and fuzzy all through the sleeves as well unlike some others I have purchased which has been a nightmare for me. The hood is perfectly designed so it’s wide enough to go over your head and designed to not fall into your eyes! I would post a pic on here if I could but there isn’t a spot for me to do it.
Large is not too small or too big. If I needed to wear layers under it I would have gotten an XL. It does have a clincher to not make u look wide around the waist if u want it to highlight ur waistline.

This is a comfortable all-purpose coat. The omni-heat is not as warm as down, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. I can walk to the store, unzip when I arrive, and not overheat or feel overstuffed like I would with a down parka.
This winter (coldest day so far 16F) the coat has been warm enough over just a T-shirt while walking. That’s a pleasantly light feeling. Some reviewers complain that the sleeves are rather long. Not a problem for me as I have long arms.
I like the cuff snaps. When cinched the cuffs can go inside gauntlet gloves, and when uncinched, short gloves can go under the sleeves. Either way, the sleeves do not gap if I raise my arms. The armholes would be snug on me over a thick sweater, so a little more space there or preferably pit zips would be a nice addition.
The chest pocket on the outside is roomy for my phone, and I like being able to access it without opening the coat. Things don’t fall out of the upright lower pockets as they can with slanted pockets.
So, lots of good points, but some design critiques for the hood. Two inches more space at the back would make it a lot better. Right now if I cinch it, it puts tension on the back of the coat, which is annoying.
The lining does keep my ears warm. The hood’s fur strip tends to gap between the buttons – snaps at 1″ intervals might work better. And, this is a very minor nitpick, was it really necessary to put orange Velcro on the back of the olive coat’s hood? The other colors don’t have contrasting Velcro.
All in all though, a nice warm coat for winter weather and I’m a fan of omni-heat.
When my zipper broke on my trusty old winter coat it took FOR. EV. ER to find just the right one to replace it and this is IT! It runs true to size and is a slim, flattering cut, but not overly fitted, so I can wear my normal size with a sweatshirt underneath without feeling like I’m going to bust the seams.
It’s long enough to keep my behind out of the wind and is quite warm without being heavy or bulky. The heft of it is just right to feel like good quality without being overly burdensome and the lining is so silky smooth it goes on like buttah – no fabric sticking on fabric when you put it on.
I love the big pockets that actually have room for things AND close to keep them secure. One of my favorite features of this guy is actually the hood because the perfect hood is hard to find! It’s not too big or small and the faux fur trim is removable, which I love because I’m not normally a fur girl.
And I discovered that if you have the faux fur trim attached you can flip it forward for extra wind protection. It has a double zipper, so you can unzip the bottom and it’s long enough to need that for sitting or taking long strides, but the double zipper is the only thing I’ve had a bit of an issue with on this coat.
Sometimes it’s a bit sticky and takes a bit of effort to get both zippers on far enough to work. Otherwise it has been perfect for a cold, Midwest winter. Personally I find it a bit too warm if the outdoor temps are above freezing and I have a hard time shelling out $200 for any article of clothing, but lucky for me I got a wicked deal on it and I’m loving it!.
I cannot vouch for the performance of this jacket for warmth as I do not plan on keeping it. I do own several other omni-heat products, and I would say they are great for retaining warmth without the bulk, and more breathable than my Columbia jacket with just regular lining.
It is roomer than the usual sizing, in my opinion. I think this is great because I think it is expected that you can buy your usual size in a winter jacket, but be able to fit at least a heavy sweater inside and still be able to move! I wish this jacket had pockets from the side that is easier to slide hands in (and line them with flannel), but I did like that there are large pockets that are secured with snaps.
I also liked the length of the jacket. Having a jacket that covers the bum and top of the thighs really makes a difference in a cold prairie winter! What ruined the jacket for me was the removable faux fur trim for the hood.
It sticks, out at the ends and you have no way of tightening the hood around your face. The faux fur was really cheap and came flattened and I don’t think the material is going to be “fluffable” and is thin to start with.
In this case, it would’ve been better to have no fur trim, and just have a string or cord that allows you to tighten the hood around your face. I also disliked that it went on sale for $30 less just a few days after I bought it! Also Columbia – I’ve put in my return info on your website correctly multiple times and it doesn’t recognize my order.
I’m pretty chapped about that, because now I have to phone, but couldn’t because for some reason, Nov 25 is a closure date for the company. Grr.

Bought this mostly for Virginia weather/winter and dog walking. Many people report issues with the zipper but I haven’t had any issues at all. You just have to make sure the bottom zipper is in the right place and then the top will zip/unzip.
The bottom zipper has never separated when sitting and coat isn’t too bulky for a short car ride. Coat is warm, but not solid warm in 20 degree cold. but does just fine in 30-40 degrees for a dog walk.
I still have to have a sweatshirt or sweater on too. I can definitely tell a difference if I dont. Love the mid thigh length and it keeps me warm and makes me realize the cold on the parts of my legs that aren’t covered by the coat.
The shape is very roomy. I wish it was a little more fitted in the waist area to be cuter but the roominess allows for a more bulky sweater or hoodie underneath. The hood is really big and I had to cinch it to make it not flop over my face.
and that worked great for the adjustment. The hood is awesome when the wind is whipping and is roomy enough I can throw it over top of my knit hat with a ball on top of it and still fits over it. I love the coat.
it might could be a titch warmer but if that was the case I probably would be sweating in it. I bought it in black. The fur appears to just snap on/off around the hood. I haven’t removed it yet. Pockets and the mid section and back of the inside of coat are lined in this short warm fur like material that is very comfy cozy.
My only complaint is the pockets zip open/shut. which I always leave unzipped. and when they are unzipped my hand catches the corner of the zipper area and I wish that wasn’t there. I am super happy with my purchase.
Would def recommend! I wear a 6 and bought this in a Small. it is still pretty roomy but arm length is perfect.
I gave this jacket four stars as it features a common issue in jackets now a days. The arms are so tight that you cannot get a sweater or more than one layer under it. The snugness can be a bit uncomfortable when moving certain ways.
The color and warmth of the jacket are very nice; not ‘gale’ nice, but def below freezing nice. Toasty for a walk to the car or a quick walk to the market. I like the ‘double’ zip so that when I sit down, I can unzip from the bottom to relieve stress on the zipper and make sitting or driving more comfortable.
I have received compliments on the jacket whenever I wear it. There is some fleece lining around the chest/back area which extends up to the chin area and the removeable hood is lined. I do wish the fleece had been extended from the chest down the length of the jacket, as when it is windy, you can feel the wind below the chest area.
The biggest drawback for me was the narrow sleeves. I don’t know why this is so common in ladies jackets these days. I guess folks don’t dress in layers as they used to, given that most of our excursions include jumping into a car to get where we are going.
We’re not such a ‘walking’ people these days. This jacket would be good to go outside for a walk in as long as there is not much wind. I guess this jacket is good for what I bought it for. If you are looking for an outside jacket for snowshoeing or any lengthy outdoor winter adventure, this is not the jacket for you.
I got the green and it is a nice, soft green with a slight sheen.
I bought the baltic teal and the dark clay in XL. The fit is good on me (very curvy; 48in bust, 38in waist, 49in hips) and I like the diagonal sewing, which is more slimming that the horizontal versions that I had in a M/L a few years ago.
There is enough room to layer underneath and I have big upper arms but can still easily cross them in this coat. The hood is lovely too, fits snuggly and I like that it doesn’t have velcro (last coat from LE did and it ruined my knitted gloves).
I forgot this has micro fleece inside, and it is a nice, cozy addition, although I wish it wasn’t in the hood b/c I have curly hair. The baltic teal looks exactly as in the picture and is very rich – I will be keeping it.
I didn’t have high hopes for the dark clay, since washed out pinks aren’t good on me. In some of the pictures the dark clay almost looks ballet pink, but others a more muted color. I was shocked at how brown/mauve it really is.
It has a nice sheen to it and I’m sure it would look good on some people, but I was very disappointed by how little it looked like the photos. I would not have purchased it if the photos had reflected the color more accurately.

I wanted a longer coat to wear with longer sweaters and for extended periods outside when it is below 10°F (i. e. shoveling). This jacket checked all the boxes. I tried it out on a 10°C morning by taking a 1-1.
5 mile walk with only a single middle weight layer underneath. I actually started to sweat a bit during my brisk walk. I am 5’9″, 160 lbs, 36DD, and a size 10-12. The medium fits me perfectly. The zippered part comes down to the bottom of my knees the the rest extends a bit below, but allows for easy freedom of movement.
This is exactly what I wanted. I have small wrists 6. 75″ and the storm cuffs are snug enough to keep the wind out but not too tight. The sherpa lined hood with bungee closure kept my head warm and the wind out of my ears.
The fleece lined on seam chest and hip pockets are great and it even has big patch pocket at the hip both outside and inside as well as a lined “cell phone” pocket just inside the zipper at the chest.
This jacket is worth every penny, but I am glad I got it on sale. This coat should last me many years.
I bought this coat about a month and a half ago. I love the button front tab, pocket features, the cinch waist, the buttons on the bottom sides of the coat, the double zipper and length. I wish it was windproof.
I did purchase it knowing it wasn’t. I thought I’d try it anyway. Well the past few days it’s been bitter cold out (-10 or colder with the windchill) and windy out. The coat is pretty warm until the wind hits you.
Sadly, it could be 20 degrees out and on a windy day I could feel it go right through the coat. Even when I’m dressed in layers. I wish Lands End made more coats that are not just waterproof but also windproof in this style and length.
And I wish there were more coats like this made for hourglass figures. I got an XS, and I unzip the bottom to sit more comfortably in my car. I probably should have sized up but the chest is already a little bit big in the XS.
(34b bra size and size 6 jeans in LE). Just an inch wider in the hips I think would help. I plan to keep the coat and try to wear it on days when it’s not so windy out. It really is a beautiful coat and I’ve received many compliments.
I’d never owned anything from Land’s End before this coat, but I’m glad I bought it. It’s like a down comforter that gives you a hug! Supremely warm, cozy, but easy to move around in because of the double zipper.
The only downside I see is that because I’m a bit short, the pockets aren’t in comfortable spots for me to rest my hands in. I figure if it’s cold enough out to wear this coat, I’ll probably have gloves on too, so not a problem.
I normal wear a 22/24 from Lane Bryant or a 3 from Torrid, so I bought this coat in a 4X so I can layer a thick sweater underneath, and it’s just large enough to do so without looking sloppy. If you want it really roomy, I’d go up two sizes.
I’d buy this coat again, and have already recommended it to friends. Try it! You may be pleasantly surprised.

Absolutely love this coat! It’s perfect for walking/hiking and as it’s a slightly longer length than other coats keeps your upper thighs really warm. The 3in1 feature was great as all options covered.
No hassle to remove the inner liner, it simply zips in and is secured with fasteners on the arms/neck. The hood is just the right size and covers my head keeping me dry. I ordered a 12 (usually a Size 10) to allow for extra layers but it was not necessary and sent it back to receive a 10 which was perfect.
Cannot fault this coat – would definitely recommend.

This parka is truly incredible! I bought it to replace my 10-year-old raggedy (but well-loved) Burton snowboarding coat since I don’t do as much snowsports anymore but I *do* need a warm, waterproof, insulated winter coat.
I love the look of it and get compliments every time I wear it to work (which has been quite often lately with the temperature dipping into the teens). I eat lunch outside every day so when paired with an EB down puffy (and 3 baselayers + a flannel) I am super toasty in my core! I agree with other commenters that the armpits are more constricting than you’d want it to be; the only reason I think it works for me is because I’ve a slimmer build so it’s not as uncomfortably tight as what maybe others are experiencing.
I wish there were pit zips in this coat since I’m someone who gets sweaty pretty quickly but I love the roomy hood, detachable fur, and ample pocket selection. I do think the sleeves are a bit constricting too and wish there was more adjustment available so it’s not as tight, but it definitely does the job of keeping the cold out so perhaps that’s the whole point.
All in all a superb and fashionable winter coat that I plan to wear for years to come!!!.
I have been searching for a coat to keep me warm during long dog walks. This coat absolutely delivers that! Weather can be pretty windy (Chicago) and this coat is windproof and draft free. Although I just got it this week, I’ve been able to shovel and walk the dogs without having to layer underneath.
I am petite and have a hard time finding a good fit. When I tried it on in the store the sales associate came over and commented on the great fit. I did size up so I could layer if necessary. For a very heavy coat (my husband said, “you better not fall over, you may never get back up” after picking up the coat) it looks somewhat tailored when on.
The pockets are amazing! So many! The hood is wonderful and really helps keep the wind and snow out. I have 2 wishes for this coat: please make it in prettier colors. Grey and brown??? Yuck. It is a women’s coat.
Also could you make this coat longer so it is similar to a stadium coat. During football season we tailgate and are outside ALL day in some pretty harsh conditions. If this coat covered my legs more I’d be able to handle game day much better.
I imagine commuters would agree. Overall, this coat is a dream and you won’t be disappointed – remember it’s for those that are serious about the wind, snow and cold and staying warm!.
I was looking for a down parka to replace my north face I had for over ten years that I grew out of. I had a few things on my must have list for a replacement jacket and this ticked the boxes. I wanted something to wear to get to work and something that could keep me cosy out on the ice in the winter.
It definitely keeps me warm, this is a very warm jacket, I get a bit hot sometimes so if you run cold it would probably keep you nice and cosy. It’s very heavy duty which I wanted for ice fishing, I didn’t want a fabric that might snag easily and I would not expect this too, it’s so heavy duty it was stiff at first but after a bit of wear it does soften up.
It’s quite heavy, it has surprised the two people who have picked it up to hand to me. I wanted a lot of pockets and this on has many more pockets than similar coats, love how big they are I haven’t been using a purse anymore lately and just keep my things in these giant pockets.
One last thing I like about it is the adjustable waist cinch, it really does give a big ole coat some curves if that’s is something you like.

I’ve been wanting a down jacket for glassing from windy ridge tops on chilly mornings, but for the neighborhood of $200 I decided to just carry around my bigger and heavier hunting jacket. Then I came across this little guy for $22 and figured it was worth a try.
I took it on a recent elk scouting trip around 9000 ft. elevation. I had a little backpacking sleeping bag rated to 40 degrees (probably 60 degrees is more realistic) that I wanted to test out, but I brought along my warm 20 degree sleeping bag just in case, fully expecting to get too cold and climb in my warm bag during the night.
I put on this jacket over a cotton T-shirt and turned in for the night. It got down to 39 degrees and I stayed perfectly warm. I wore it all morning and ended up hiking about 2 miles in steep country.
I broke a sweat but didn’t overheat. I did notice it smelled a little weird once I started sweating, probably the mix of down, new fabric smell, and sweat. I was very impressed with the light weight and comfort of it, not to mention it packs up super small and fits in a little stuff sack that it came with.
Perfect for keeping in your pack for when you get chilly. Is it a $200 jacket? No, but for $22 I’ll take my chances, and I won’t be devastated when I snag it on a barbed wire fence. In summary, it’s warm, super light, packable, blocks the wind, fits true to size, has elastic wrist bands, smells weird when new, zippers feel suspect to me, but cheap enough that I don’t care.
Thanks Wally World!.
This is the first of five pieces from this company that I’ve been disappointed with. They ARE onto something though and need to do a few things to it to make it stellar. 1) it is only about 1/3 insulated and not very well at that.
Insulation stops about half way down the front and back and does not cover the shoulder. This will cause core heat loss. Running the insulation as a full interior vest would be much better. 2) the hand pockets don’t have zippers and do not have waterproof material inside.
While sitting, they bunch open, which would allow water inside the jacket and corrupt the waterproof – nothing worse than being wet and sitting! Put taped zippers on it and problem solved. 3) the actual rainproof material is pretty cheap and will delaminates quickly.
Increase quality and charge $10 more. 4) the lower back pocket is a good idea, but rendered useless if wearing a pack. It is the same pocket you are supposed to turn it inside out and zip it into. Move this pocket to the chest and put a taped zipper on it.
I’m returning mine and will order the full down jacket for layering under my realtree rain jacket.

Absolutely love this coat. Our temps have fallen to -16C with a windchill to -25C and this coat keeps me toasty warm. The fit is ideal for a thick sweater or a lighter layer. This coat is fabulous! SO versatile, because of the colour. The picture of the Eggplant colour of this jacket on the Eddie Bauer website does not do it justice at all. There is a very slight blackish sheen to it that different lighting highlights, which makes it very elegant, almost dressy.
I will wear this coat casually, to work, and also when dressed up on a cold day. Very warm, but lightweight at the same time. The length is also so versatile, not too short, which would make it more casual, and not too long, which would make it look more utilitarian for very cold days.
Just perfect! P. S. My family owns a variety of coats from Eddie Bauer for every season. We love all of them. Great quality and value when purchased on sale. Love, love, love! Thank-you Eddie Bauer!.
It is one of my favourite parka from EB. The fit is just right. It leans towards slim fit side. Most parka will give me a room in belly area and it makes me look chubby. I don’t have issues with this parka.
It’s light weight. Filling power is 550 so it might not be warm enough unless you wear layers or thermal under it. I don’t usually layer at all even in winter. I’ll just wear a top that i wear all year round and rely on jacket for warmth and EB outwear does a really good job at it.
For winter, I have sun valley down. I bought this one for fall or towards the end of winter into spring. I like the eggplant color. It has a blackish shiny finish and appears darker than the photo. And it’s cute.
Quality and design is very cute. It has elastic on hood and cuffs which will prevent from cold air getting inside. There’s 2 sections of pockets inside – one slip one and one side one with zip on the left chest area.
2 more zipped sides pockets although i prefer snaps for the sides. It’s a lovely jacket. Go ahead and buy.
This Parka is perfect; I purchased the “Derp Eggplant ” Color and I love the variation in the color with light reflections. It is versatile, comfortable and warm. Can easily be worn during a light rainy day.
Also; I purchased this on sale and the price was excellent, I love this Parj and ordered a second one!!! The only thing that could make this Parka better would be a faux fur lining on the hood!! PS it does have an interior zip pocket.

Reviews From Real Customers
Love this coat. It’s replacing a much-worn Transcendant Hoody that finally gave up so many feathers that it just doesn’t do the job anymore below 20 degrees. It’s interesting that some reviews say this isn’t as warm as the aforementioned.
I find that it is MUCH warmer. It’s got a higher fill than the Transcendant and it’s much loftier all over. it’s not even close. An although lofty, it’s not so much so that I can’t throw on a shell or anorak over it easily.
I live in Northern Minnesota where (at the time of this writing) we’re already seeing temps in the negative teens. I can wear a light fleece under this and I’m good to go for normal activities. As for the sizing, I wear a large in everything and this is no different.
I have wider shoulders and I’ll sometimes run across other products that bind under the arms as a result. I’ve yet to try on any O. R. product that gives me this issue. I will say that the Coldfront fits just a wee bit more snug around the mid-section and hips than the Transcendant, but it’s also a little bit longer, which I like.
This also makes it easier to over-layer. I also have slightly longer arms than some large jackets can accommodate, but this one is right on. I haven’t found the zipper to be especially annoying at the chin/neck area as others have mentioned, but if it’s cold enough to require zipping up that high, I usually have a neck gaiter on anyway and perhaps I don’t think about it.
My only minor gripe is the lack of a zippered breast pocket. Perhaps this was to keep a certain styling in tact in that area or perhaps to keep the insulation uniform. I’d be willing to give up a little down in that area to have that nice, warm, convenient pocket for my phone or wallet.
The inner drop-in pockets are just too spacious to contain something like a phone safely. (so minus 1/2-star) As for longevity, we’ll see. but I’m hopeful of the shell material chosen for this jacket.
I like this jacket so much I ended up purchasing a second for my father, we’re different body shapes but I purchased a size large for both of us. I’m 6’3″, 210, 43-44″ chest, 36″ arm length, 34″ waist; its not quite “fitted” on me but I think it fits great and is what I was expecting (fits well enough that I can wear with just a single layer underneath or I can easily add a baselayer and fleece if I wanted to.
I’ve worn this in the mountains and to a nice dinner on the same day. My father is 5’11, 220, thicker than me in the midsection but the jacket fits him great albeit with slightly less room for layers than myself.
I think it’s now his favorite midlayer jacket as it is mine too. The jacket is suitable to wear on its own in or you could wear an upsized shell over it on really cold days for winter sports. You can also dress it up or dress it down, good warmth.
Really flexible! If you’re looking for a packable puffer this is definitely on the big end of the spectrum, I typically won’t use it in that manner, try it on and test pack it if that’s what you’re after.
As for features, the pouch pockets on the inside are a nice, big enough for gloves/toques/glasses etc but not obstructive. If anything, I wish there was a small zippered pocket and I wish the main zipper was two-way.
I really appreciate the OR logo is subtle on the sleeve and not massive on the jacket – funny enough, friends have noticed and commented that its a classy touch. Not many brands do that. We’ll see how it holes up long term! Looks to be well made.
I really wanted to like this jacket but found the fit too akward to keep. It was warmer than expected, the zipper were nice, and overall well constructed. The outer shell material was a bit more crisp and nylonish feeling than what I anticipated though.
I thought it would be soft like an atom jacket and it sort of is like that but it wasn’t as comfortable. Overall I like it and would have kept it but the fit was a bit strange for me. It’s a bit tight in the chest/shoulders when reaching forward but at the same time a bit too boxy around the stomach.
I’m 6 foot 180 athletic/muscularish build and the medium was just a bit too snug to layer under and felt restrictive. Meanwhile the extra material around the midsection made it a bit akward as an underlayer.
My second issue is that the sleeves were a bit long for a medium but didn’t have any sort of elastic or strap. This is personal choice as it seems by design because of the added thumb loops but for everyday use that extra material on the hand isn’t ideal.
So for my build I don’t think it works well but it’s a nice jacket if it fits your body type.

The jacket is great; really warm, hood fits nicely after adjusting, craftsmanship is top notch. My one, main, issue is the pockets. The zip is nice and long but you can’t leave them open in the cold as there is no insulation underneath the pocket.
And there are no external pockets. So, if you’re like me, working outside and need regular access to pockets for phone, lenses, camera stuff it is not a very good jacket for working. The pockets are large but not deep enough to keep anything in them.
If you’re looking for something that is useful for lots of items get a more traditional parka with the external top-open pockets and breast pockets. The one thing that would have saved this for me is an easy to get to breast pocket for quick items like keys/phone.
It is a hassle to have to zip/unzip every time I need to access the pockets. All that said, it really is super warm. I’m not sure who’s not dressing well for winter but I have on layers and on a midwest windy, 0 degree Fahrenheit day I’m toasty after walking a few minutes.
I have wanted a long insulated coat to compliment tunics, dresses, and skirts for years. I tried and returned the Patagonia 3-in-1 model, as well as the very overpriced Stio down coat model. I am very happy with my Rab purchase.
This is my second down coat from this company and I can attest this brand makes high quality, built to last, ergonomically thoughtful products. Unfortunately the size chart on MJ does not explicitly state that sizes are listed in UK sizes.
I called MJ and they could not verify the sizing over the phone. I took a gamble and lucked out that my hunch was correct, the size 10 is a Small (also like my other down coat from Rab). The only irritation is the hood is designed to mold to your face to keep snow out and heat in.
That causes the top of the zipper to curl in towards your neck and can be irritating at times. I prefer to leave the upper part of the coat unzipped to my lower throat and wear a decorative scarf or neck buff.
I am 5’4”, 127lb, and curvy on the bottom and petite on the top. This coat fits perfectly.
The Valiance is a great cold weather down jacket. I mainly use it for general casual wearing, and it makes a decent resort ski jacket, though missing some technical features typical for true ski or snowboard wear.
It has a more snug fit and is more compact than many down jackets. I’m 6’ 215 lbs and the Large fits me well with a base layer or light shirt. It would be tight with a heavier mid layer, but it’s warm enough that I don’t need one typically.
The water resistance is a nice touch, though in rainy temps I normally wear a lighter jacket. Not waterproof, but better than most down jackets. Good price point!.

The sizing chart definitely doesn’t match the jackets. What the sizing chart said an XL should have fit with room and longer sleeves. What the sleeve length stated they should have gone past my wrist, but barely reached my wrist – I’m 6 feet tall so sizing is very important to me.
It was also very tight in the shoulders. I thought I would return it – nothing stated on the jacket information that it was a “Final Sale”. I tried to print a return label and it said it was a final sale and couldn’t be returned.
The only reason I tried purchasing from FREE COUNTRY was because of the positive reviews. This makes me wonder if they truly are reviews from actual purchases or if the company wrote the reviews themselves.
I have contacted the company regarding the return and no response thus far. I’m very disappointed. Theresa MN.
This is the second Free Country jacket I have owned and they last a very long time. My first one is probably close to ten years old and it is still in great shape except for a couple tears in the sleeve, which is the only reason I replaced it.
I love the color of this new one and the fur trim hood is a cute touch. I don’t think this one is quite as warm as my old one, but it is still my go to for long walks in the Minnesota winters. It keeps me very warm and the hood is very roomy.
It is also a very nice looking jacket and I feel good when I wear it. I also get a lot of compliments on its beautiful wine color. I have washed and dried it with no problems. It is also a good length for a tall person.
I look forward to many years with this jacket.
I have been looking for a new coat for years. I’m super particular and I have bought and returned many jackets over this time period. The moment I opened this I knew it was gonna be good. Honestly it fits so perfectly.
I’m 5’7” and have broad shoulders and a large rib cage but when I get anything bigger than an X-LARGE they never fit. The sleeves are long enough. The actual jacket is long enough. It feels roomier around the bottom which I love because I swear when I layer up, I can never sit down comfortably.
I absolutely love the recycling factor. I would not change a thing. 10/10!!.

Reviews From Real Customers
I have been wearing this model for quite a few years. They used to last several years, the front zipper. Now days, like everything else, they are not made to last that long, so we will buy another unit.
Seems the local repair shops want $50-60 area to sew in a new zipper, and can put a heavier duty zipper in if they can find. Is what I do. Sometimes fix and sometimes buy another, and have had more than a dozen.
Too many, even what are called parkas, are too short of length. To be warmer, the jacket/parka MUST go to near mid-thigh area. This jacket provides that, and I do always get the tall size, which makes a difference of about two inches longer.
All the pockets are larger on this model. Too many jackets have too small of pockets to be of much value. I have stayed dry in this jacket during moderate precip of rain and snow. Much of my outdoor, all-weather activity involves being horseback.
The longer sleeves provide enough extra length to help keep most of the weather from getting inside my gloves/mittens. Overall, I really like this jacket/parka. As said prior, the front main zipper is the only weak point.
Needs to be much more heavy duty.
This was a replacement for a worn-out coat of another brand that served me well for over two decades. Tough shoes to fill, indeed. My requirements were simple – the replacement needed to be toasty warm in whatever nature throws at me, windproof and absolutely, positively waterproof.
I got all those things and a few extras with this parka! The fit and function of the parka are spot on. Excellent pockets, great storm flap over the front zipper, and not bad looking to boot. I also really appreciate the insulated and detachable hood.
I’m not personally a fan of hoods, so it’s nice to be able to zip it off. The collar has a nice fleece lining that feels good against your skin. I also appreciate the two way zipper, as sitting in a coat that comes below your waist can be like a strait jacket at times.
This solves the problem nicely. I highly, highly recommend it as an effective shield against nasty winter weather.
This coat kept me completely comfortable while working outdoors on the coldest NHL hockey game in history, the Minnesota Winter Classic at Target Field. Yet for all the superior insulating value that it offers, It’s incredibly lightweight and not at all bulky.
The hood functioned better than that on any previous coat. The soft inner collar lining is a nice touch. It has a large number of voluminous, well placed and entirely useful pockets. The fabric inside the arms is very silky, allowing one to easily slide one’s shirt sleeves in & out.
The only downside in the lower zipper pull. When pulled up on its own, it manages to always gets caught up on the inner fabric. The somewhat inconvenient solution is to always use the upper & lower zipper pulls together, which alleviates the catching issue.
Overall, well worth the cost.

My wife and I both purchased the REI Co-op Stormhenge Hybrid Parkas for a trip we took to Germany this winter. I knew we’d encounter temperatures in the high 30’s to mid 40’s with rain and wanted to ensure we had coats that would protect us from the wind and rain as well as the temperatures.
The parkas did an amazing job of keeping the wind and rain off us! We had days where we walked for miles in steady rain when the temperature was in the upper 30’s and we stayed dry and warm. I was extremely impressed how the water just slid down the outside of the jacket.
The outside and inside pockets were well situated and the zippers were easy to use. Now to the part that I wasn’t happy about. If there was a way to deduct half a star I would have due to the less than stellar hood design.
When it was windy the hood continually wanted to blow off of our heads. When this occurred we’d have to hold onto our hoods to keep the rain and/or wind off of our heads. Over the 40+ years I have been backpacking and purchased loads of outdoor equipment I don’t recall a jacket where I couldn’t tighten a hood close to my head.
The hood itself would be fine except that there is no good way to cinch it down. The cinch strap is configured such that when we tried to tighten it, it wouldn’t pull the hood close enough to our face/head to keep the hood in place.
Looking at the design we’ll probably cut the single cord that goes through the barrel lock and place both cords through it. I think that will solve the problem. I am surprised that the designers of this jacket didn’t see and correct that deficiency.
Overall we loved this jacket. It is a bit bulky and probably not as fashionable as some other jackets on the market, but other than the hood cinching mechanism this is a wonderful jacket. I would recommend it to a friend that needed a jacket with some extra length which we appreciated, and when a jacket is needed that provides wind and rain protection in pretty cold environments.
I spent weeks looking for a new parka after needing to go up a size from my old one (or so I thought). Nothing made the cut until I found this parka. Waterproof, windproof, 850 fill for such an affordable price – my mind was blown.
I ordered a medium like I did in all the other parkas due to my weight gain (5’7”, 140 lbs, 34-28-40, hourglass with broad shoulders and long arms) and was absolutely heartbroken when I tried it on, because similar to another reviewer, I literally looked pregnant in it.
I was almost willing to sacrifice looks for an otherwise perfect coat but it was so pronounced that I thought I would get too many questions on when I was due. So I returned. BUT. Then the Small miraculously came back in stock and I figured I’d give it a shot – because other than the midsection fit the parka was perfect – and IT FIT! Still a little bulky around the middle due to the way the insulation is put in (some more around the bottom/legs would be warmer and also prevent that weird midsection bulge) but nothing like the Medium.
So I’d say there is definitely some room to size down and still fit comfortably and it may help with some of the fit issues. The positives about this coat have all been mentioned already, but it’s just amazing.
Feels like putting on a warm sleeping bag. Wind can’t get through. The extra baffle around the neck is so cozy and keeps the cold out. The hood stays on and is long enough to keep out rain. The sleeves are long enough for my very long arms.
And the pockets – I would have kept for the number and quality of the pockets alone – lined with fleece to keep hands warm and behind the down layer too. Every time I put on the coat I make a comment like “oh this coat is so cozy” or “oh I love this coat so much” because it just invokes that feeling of cozy comfort and warmth.
Just such an incredible coat at an amazing price! If the insulation placement was improved, it would be completely perfect. Highly recommend!.
This is a GREAT coat. I’ve been looking for a coat that will survive an actual hike/snowshoe through the woods (aka: doesn’t immediately tear if a twig looks at it sideways), won’t get destroyed by drizzle, accommodates my giant wool sweaters, and isn’t an awkward fit on my petite frame.
THIS IS IT. I absolutely did have to size up one from the chart (got M instead of S) to deal with my thick sweater habit, but wouldn’t have otherwise. And even after sizing up, the sleeves aren’t annoyingly long.
It is a little bulky/puffy (in a way that I like), but still pretty darn lightweight, and doesn’t feel restrictive or in-my-way while tromping around. It blocks wind like a champ, but I haven’t had any clammy sweat going on in this coat.
Also…I am a bird nerd and I don’t get cold when standing stock still on a cold day. I’ve only tried it down to 20F so far, but I’m quite certain given how toasty I’ve been that it should handle down to 10F or 0F (for me) without too much trouble.
Love the pockets. Zippers are okay. The hood is a bit oversized for me, but adding a thicker hat takes care of that. This does NOT cover the bum, so I definitely need longies under my hiking pants, but I specifically wanted a shorter coat in this case, so that was known and planned for…just be aware! Less important, but worth noting: I LOVE the green and it helps me blend in when birding.
I like old school hiker colors and love, love, love it.

Extreme performance without the bulk. Stay warm, dry and comfortable in the super lightweight AV Extreme Jacket. This winter jackets packs the performance to keep you warm of much bulkier jackets with Polartec Alpha Direct interior and AcquaZero Eco treated exterior fabric that keeps you protected from wind and rain.
The breathable DVstretch thermal fabric insulates against cold winds while also allowing moisture from perspiration to escape, helping regulate your core body temperature whether you’re sprinting or cruising.
Perfect for winter training rides in cold conditions, this jacket keeps up with your most extreme workouts and riding conditions. The high, ergonomic fleece-lined collar, soft elastic cuffs at the wrists offer warmth and protection with a snug and comfortable fit.
A longer drop tail below the rear pockets aids in protection from inclement weather and cold temperatures with the highly reflective pixel fabric for use in low light conditions. Polartec Alpha Direct The key to the AV Extreme Jacket’s performance in the coldest temperatures is the Polartec Alpha Direct insulated interior, which continuously releases excess body heat and perspiration before it causes saturation and discomfort.
It does this through soft, lofted fibers that are inherently hydrophobic and resist all moisture. The blue interior of the AV Extreme uses a 130 gram Alpha Direct insulation for maximum warmth and performance in the coldest deep winter temperatures, from the high 40s down to the low 20°F Fit A slightly relaxed-fit, yet still body conforming, the AV Extreme Jacket has enough warmth built in to be worn with a very lightweight thermal jersey or winter base layer, like our Ceramic short or long sleeve base layers, to keep the bulk down.
Features + Benefits Made for the coldest temperatures High breathability so you can ride with high intensity without overheating 2 layer membrane wind and water resistant DVstretch fabric at the front, back, shoulders, front of arms 130 grams Alpha Direct thermal fabric on the inside of jacket that provides thermal properties and high breathability, does not absorb water so rider stays dry and comfortable 3 layer membrane on side panels and underarms High, ergonomic fleece-lined collar Elastic cuff straight cut at wrist for a snug and comfortable fit Reflective drop tail below rear pockets for protection against low temperatures and inclement weather Zippered front side pocket Reflective accents on the back pocket and left wrist Care Machine wash cold (30° C) / Do not bleach / Hand wash 30° / Do not iron / Hang or lay flat to dry.
Reviews From Real Customers
The AV Extreme Winter jacket is so thin and lightweight that I doubted it would stand up to freezing temperatures, icy winds, or cold rain. To my surprise, this jacket provides outstanding protection against the elements – far better than any other Giordana jacket I’ve tried.
The Polartec eVent facing fabric is highly windproof and water resistant, and the Alpha Direct insulation is impressively warm without bulk or weight. I was skeptical of the “waterproof” rating but I have stayed completely dry in steady light rain for extended periods, even though the outer face fabric appears superficially rain-soaked after a while.
I do remain somewhat skeptical of the durability of the Alfa Direct insulation, which eliminates the need for a backing fabric and comes in direct contact with underlayers – there is some minoring fraying with extended use.
But when combined with a light base layer and thin thermal hoody, this jacket can keep your core warm in sub-freezing temps regardless of wind chill. It has limited breathability and no venting, which is to be expected for this kind of lightweight cycling jacket designed for winter weather.
Yet it does provide decent moisture management under hard exertion. Contrary to what other reviewers say, I find it fits slightly small. I would normally wear a medium but large affords just enough space for layering without being baggy or bulky.
It’s still a form-fitting and lightweight jacket even after sizing up. The jacket could use additional reflective piping for riding in low-light winter conditions, in my opinion, but it is otherwise an outstanding piece of kit.
Expensive, yes, but perfect for high performance activity in cold weather.
Quality materials, excellent fit & finish as expected with Giordana. The jacket does a good job of repelling light rain & blocking wind. Outer face fabric is abrasion resistant but has plenty of stretch.
It is surprisingly warm considering how light & thin the jacket is, but I need additional under layer (sweater or hoodie) if temps dip below ~7 degrees C. I don’t consider this adequate protection by itself below ~4 C unless you’re generating plenty of body heat, but that’s me.
It’s not entirely windproof & not waterproof, but is well-suited for hard workouts in chilly conditions. The fit is somewhat more relaxed but still form-fitting & not bulky or heavy. If you need to add a layer, however, size up.
I normally wear a medium but large provides a snug fit with enough room for light layering.
For sure one of my favorite Winter pieces. Did a trip to Yosemite in early November and this jacket definitely kept me warm in 40 degree weather w/ wind chill. Thankfully I’m still able to ride late in the year in Los Angeles, but this is what I opt for on the coldest days/early mornings paired with a base layer.
I wear a S in the FRC thermal long sleeve (and other Giordana long sleeves) but I’m a Medium in their thermal jacket. Really in love w/ the Siena Orange (it’s like a burnt orange or sunrise orange, no so much of a highlighter orange).
I hope Giordana brings this color to the summer jerseys as well. I want that Avio Blue thermal jacket next!!.

I bought this jacket/parka about a year ago, but winter was mild. This year, with extreme winter weather, it was time to pull it out! I bought it in Snow, which is a beautiful shade contrasting with the black detail.
This jacket is industrial strength protection against snow, rain, and of course cold. The design is well thought out, with heavy duty zippers, great pockets, tough material, and full body, neck, and head coverage.
Lots of times looks do not come with function. Not in this case. Yes the jacket has some heft, but it actually is super shapely, accenting the waist, and flattering the hips. Beautiful hood zips off.
Sleeves long with good wrist cuff coverage. I did have snaps added to the collar to be able to get the collar out of my face as needed. Bottom zip tends to open up from the bottom – only negative. I feel so warm and stylish in it.
It is gorgeous and I love it!!.
I love this jacket! I love the colour and the length on me is great (just under my knees and I’m 5’5). I like the zippers on the side and that the fur is detachable. The hood is a good size too, doesn’t droop over my eyes but covers my full head.
It’s comfortable and super warm, but I’ve only worn it in under -20 so far. There are a couple fly away strands I needed to cut off and the zipper can get caught sometimes on the way up since it’s such a long jacket.
I get what the other reviews are saying about a tightness in the shoulder, but the mobility is still good and it’s not tight down the arms. And it’s a bit heavier than my old (Aritzia for reference) winter jacket but nothing crazy.
Otherwise for fit, the size guide recommended a large, but I definitely could have sized down – it’s a bit bulky in the shoulders and waist area. No refunds or exchanges on sale items, so unfortunately can’t.
I bought this jacket in purple a couple of months ago. I’m always cold but this jacket keeps me super toasty and dry in the snow or rain. I get lots of compliments on it, and I like that I can remove the fur from the hood.
I’m happy I got the long jacket to keep my legs warm too, and I’m finding my feet also don’t get as cold when I wear this jacket. I would say the only inconvenience is that it’s quite puffy so I can’t wear it in the car.
I’m 5’4 and 126lbs, and the XS fits perfectly, with no need to wear a thick layer underneath because it’s so warm. This was my first noize product (my boyfriend also bought a jacket too and loved it) and I am not disappointed.
I actually just bought a second jacket so I’m hoping for the same product quality. I also love that it’s made from recycled plastic and not animal products so I feel great about my choice to purchase.
Will write more reviews soon for the other products I purchased!.

I find the fit and features on this parka very strange. First thing to note is that all the pockets feel a bit small for being on a parka. I could barely fit a Nalgene in the hand pockets. The torso is huge-large enough to zip up over another parka! However, the sleeves and shoulders all fit properly (though the volume in the sleeve is also somewhat excessive).
If I layer this over a mid weight down jacket with 5 oz of 900 fill down, this parka feels great and doesn’t compress the inner jacket at all! However, that isn’t what it is meant to do. It is meant to go over layers that you would be climbing or skiing in, and when I wear those layers the fit is not at all correct.
Keep in mind, I’m a fairly thin person with 37 in chest and 40 in hips. Maybe people with other body types would be happier with their sizing, which is good. Not everyone can fit Arc’teryx or Rab. Besides the sizing issues I had, I also wasn’t super impressed with the loft.
Because the parka is so long, the baffles aren’t filled as much. Then, the baggy fit makes it feel very underwhelming because the insulation is so far away from my body. The fill weight to total weight isn’t very competitive once you start looking at other belay parkas.
Things like the Big Agnes Fire Tower (slightly heavier) or the Patagonia Grade VII (a bit lighter, much more expensive so not a fair comparison) offer a lot more warmth due to being fully baffled, shorter lengths, better fit (on my body type), and having a bit more down.
On the other end of the spectrum, the Rab Neutrino Pro is 9 oz lighter and should offer a similar level of warmth for about the same price. These factors leave me scratching my head a little as to what angle/purpose OR was imagining whey they designed this piece.
Now, take my review with a grain of salt as I did not use the parka at all myself. All that said, it was very well constructed, extremely comfortable, and the added durability from 30d fabric was a plus as well.
This jacket is great, but definitely size down. I?m consistently a size small in OR (and every brand, unless the sizing is junior, then I go medium for shoulder room), but wow, I was swimming in a small.
I exchanged for an XS and even still there is plenty of room in the body for layers. Sizing aside, I love the length – it hits just below my butt (I?m 5?6) and has been great for windy belays and camping on a winter climbing trip to Spain.
Very warm. I?m confident it?ll stay cozy for mountaineering and high elevation trekking I am worried about the zipper – it can be a bit tricky and I almost always need to zip the lower zipper up before I can zip the top one down to take off the coat.
In the past, I had a good experience OR?s customer service for zippers though, so if it?s an issue down the line I?m sure it?ll be fine Also the stuff sack provided is worthless. Super thin and the elastic used to close the bag pulled out within a week I also don?t love the thick elastic at the cuffs – maybe with big gloves I?ll appreciate them, but otherwise I keep them as loose as possible, otherwise it?s a bit irritating on my wrists.
I ordered this jacket and the RAB neutrino pro and kept this one mostly because of the length.
Wow. I was SOOOO excited to get this jacket! The length was long enough to cover my bum, but not too long, and I wanted a WARM down jacket that was windproof and water resistant for Central Oregon and Southern Utah winters, and this seemed to fit the bill.
A few years ago, I bought a similar jacket from RAB, and was always disappointed because the down around the elbows had migrated to the back of the arms and it was just a little cold when the temp was in the 20s or less, enough that it would make me notice and comment every time.
I tried putting the jacket in the dryer with tennis balls to no avail. Well. I took this jacket out for an inaugural walk in the 20 degree weather, and the SAME THING happened! But, with the OR jacket, the down migrated to the back in the entire upper arms and into the shoulders! This is a design flaw, likely among the lighter fill down products.
The only way I can think of fixing it would be to sew a baffle on the lateral upper arm, but nobody has though of this yet. I called customer service and they told me they couldn’t fix my jacket, but that they would pass this info along to product development.
I hope they do! I’m so bummed to return what I thought would be my perfect cold weather friend!.

I bought this coat about a month ago and so far, I really love this coat! I have been able to test it out in a wide range of Midwest winter weather, including cold rain, sleet, snow, wind, and temps in the teens/single digits.
It has a matte/canvas-like fabric outside that repels water and keeps out the wind. I bought the brown color and am very happy with how it looks in person. The neckline zips high so the hood stays secure, and the hood is insulated for added warmth.
The inner cords that cinch the waist is figure flattering, and a feature I was looking for in a new waterproof winter coat. Some cons: The fit was a little tighter than I anticipated for a Medium size.
I am a size 6 and typically order outerwear in a Medium to ensure enough room for layers underneath. I can still fit a sweater and zip it up fine, but it is more fitted in the arms and hip area compared to the other long winter coat I own (which is wool and more boxy).
The zipper can occasionally be a pain to get zipped up, which might just be because of the double zipper and longer coat length. Also, there are no inside pockets and the outside pockets do not have zippers, but some have snaps.
Not a big deal for me, but I know it might be for some. Overall, I am very happy with the purchase of this coat.
I recently moved to Anchorage, AK and wanted a coat that would cover my bum and keep me warm when not doing high energy activities. I would say my cold tolerance is pretty ok (I’ve now run outside in -4 weather with just base layers, a heavy fleece and thick gloves), but when slowly walking my dog or scraping ice off my windshield in the morning, this is great! The hood is very deep and I appreciate the snaps vs Velcro (no ruining my knit scarves).
I bought the tan color and really like the heritage design mixed with the great technical features. Again, most importantly, it keeps me cozy (almost hot if the temps are above 15 and I’ve been walking for more than 10 minutes).
I got the large so I’d have room for my shoulders/layering (I’m 5’7, 155 lbs, athletic build with more shoulder and smaller bust), and it’s a little roomy in front, but I prefer that.
There were no reviews when I purchased this coat, but it was worth the risk! I love it! It’s warm and feels more durable than my long Northface puffer coat (which I still love but it needed to be replaced ).
I’m 5’10, broad shouldered and have extra long arms. I purchased the large and it fits my shoulders and covers my wrists completely which is a big deal for me. The sweater cuff keeps the cold from sneaking up my sleeves.
It’s roomy, but not bulky or oversized. I like coats that allow me move and bend comfortably in them. It’s longer than I thought it would be when standing. Sitting, it covers my butt against a cold bench, but not the back of my thighs.
Conclusion
There are many different types of women’s winter coats for extreme cold weather, but one of the most important things to look for is a coat that is waterproof. This is especially important if you’ll be spending time outdoors in the snow or rain.
Waterproof coats will help to keep you dry and warm, even if you get wet. Another important feature to look for in a winter coat is insulation. This will help to keep you warm even when the temperature outside is very cold.
coats with down or synthetic insulation are typically the best at trapping heat. Finally, make sure to choose a coat that is comfortable to wear and that fits well. A coat that is too big or too small will be uncomfortable and won’t keep you as warm as one that fits properly.
