Contains most commonly used sizes and thread counts
This product is a very comprehensive set for the automotive mechanic. Covers all common sizes in both metric and fractional and more. Set comes organized in a rugged, hinged plastic case. Includes one each plug tap and hexagonal die in sizes from 3mm to 12mm and 4 to 1/2in in fine and coarse threads, plus 1/8in -27bsp and 1/8in -27npt pipe taps and dies.
Set also comes with: plain die stock, adjustable die stock, adjustable handle tap wrench, t-tap wrench, t-tap wrench with 3/8in square drive, 16-leaf metric thread pitch gage, 18-leaf standard thread pitch gage, mini screwdriver.
This set is made to superior standards so you can accurately repair or create new tools. It comes in a convenient plastic storage case.
Great set with everything you need. Taps and dies made in USA, turning tools made in China and drill bits made in Brazil, would prefer 100% made in USA but still a 5 star product. Love having everything I need in one case, also having a set of drills that are only used for tapping threads so they’re always in good shape and don’t get lost.
I’ve used about 1/3 of the set so far and they’re sharp and haven’t broken, so very satisfied with the quality for the price.
Acme had a great price on this set, and shipped quickly. No issues there. The product has all the drill bits – which is much more convenient than the many sets without. The taps and dies seem to be well made, quality products.
Not super high-end, but certainly not at the bottom of the barrel either. My only complaint, at all, is in the case. It just doesn’t quite fit many of the bits, things aren’t held well into place, the foam piece that sort of holds things together wasn’t cut to fit the right size, and doesn’t cover some of the pieces.
The issues are in the packaging far more than the tools. Overall, very good product at a great value, with a little drawback in the case quality. It’s something I can live with, though.
Wow! Quality all the way! IRWIN has put together an excellent tap and die set here, and it is truly a pleasure to use. I’ve used it even more than anticipated, and have yet to have a size needed which wasn’t in the set.
The only issue I’ve run into so far is that the smaller cleat doesn’t hold the smaller taps adequately, and there are no chucks supplied to handle tight places. To solve this I had to hunt down a dimmunitive hand held ratcheting chuck which does the job nicely.
This was an expensive set, but well worth the extra investment.
Ratcheting T handles wind Dies with a 5 swing arc and have a reversing lever to eliminate hand over hand turning Twist lock guide system reduces the “walk back” of the die guide and keeps the dies centered while cutting Ratcheting t wrench works with GEARWRENCH pass thru socket system Die adapters work with the 3/8inch Drive pass thru ratchet and socket system as well as socket accessories Auto locking feature allow the tap adapters to be removed safely Blow mold carrying case with tilted tap holders for easy access and storage Set includes 2 ratcheting T handles, 3 sizes of tap adapters and 2 sizes of die adapter, 2 extension adapters and a sliding T for the adapters, a 4mm hex key, 5 screw extractors, SAE and metric thread gauges, and 48 taps and dies in SAE and metric sizes ranging from 4 40 to 3/4” and 3mm to 18mm.
Has a lot of size but didn’t have the ones I needed. Its okay since the price was right and I will have use for it. The best thing about this tap set is their tap handle. Its a ratcheting handle and has a lever to switch so it spin the other way.
Has alot of adapter including ones for a regular hand ratchet tool. Does come a a bar for manual turning. I mainly use this to chase threads and clean up bolts so I can’t comment on sharpness and durability if you are trying to tap a new hole.
*Update* Taps fresh holes just fine as long as you know what you are doing via drilling out the right size hole. Pros – Sizes, options, T handle Cons – None.
I’m a heavy equipment mechanic and was looking for a comprehensive set of tap&dies that wasn’t going to break the bank but wasn’t going to break apart on me either. This set really caught my eye and read all the reviews.
Some of the reviews scared me a bit but there was enough positive that a took the plunge. Oh and I caught this set on sale (deal of the day) for only $140!!! Even at the $215 price this set looks to be a steal!! The taps and dies are even laser etched so the sizes won’t just wear off when you clean them with brake clean or whatever.
Some reviews were commenting on the taps having burrs or threads having gouges in them. I’ve seen nothing of the sort on my set besides a little metal left over on just a few taps from the machining process.
Nothing that a brass brush or a die from this set can’t take care of. Also heard the ratchet tools fell apart on a few people. They seem pretty well made to me but I’ll probably use my own ratchet and tap sockets most the time anyways.
This should be the last tap&die I ever buy since my work will replace as they eventually break. I’ll put this set through it’s paces soon and update the review on my findings. In the meantime I would definitely recommend this set to any professional or home mechanic looking for a great set without paying way too much.
Edit: 3/26/21 So it’s been over 2 years and I haven’t broke any taps yet! I’ve also used the ratchet wrenches a dozen or so times and they’ve held up fine (did not fall apart like others) I can’t believe all the people that has given 1 star reviews because this set has been outstanding for me.
Maybe it’s just bad quality control or something but I must’ve really lucked with mine.
After some limited use, the overall quality and functionality seems good and the features are great. However, I just discovered that there are two 3/4 NC 10 dies and no 3/4 NF 16. see photo. I am past the time limit for a return so not sure if there are any options for obtaining the missing die from GearWrench.
If I am able to get the missing die, my overall rating will definitely increase. Update: Increase rating one star. At the time I submitted my comments above, I also contacted GearWrench directly. Within a reasonable time, I received the missing die from them.
So while it was a bit of a hassle I did get what I thought I purchased initially. Had I not needed that particular die I probably wouldn’t have noticed it missing for a long time. A word of caution to all purchasers.
check each and every tap and die when you get your set to make sure you don’t have the same problem I had. If it had not been for this situation, I would have given the product 5 stars.
Havent used these items yet but did inspect. Items were lubricated before shipping. Happy with purchase; I have more variability in sizes than Id expected so am impressed with that. No complaints about item so far, appears very easy to use.
Each tap and die in this set is constructed of long lasting alloy steel for maximum durability. This handy tap and die set includes a compartmentalized carrying case for easy identification and organization and two pitch gauges.
If you only need to do some threading once in a while, then this set may be for you. I mainly bought this set because of the metric taps and dies. I have an SAE set, although this set actually has more sizes than my craftsman set does.
–>PROS: I have used this tap & die set for about 5 years now, and as far as I remember I haven’t broken a tap in all that time, which kind of surprises me actually. The thread pitch measuring tools are also useful, especially for metric threads as they always seem odd sized.
—>CONS: The tap and die wrench’s suck. The have a lot of play and slop in them, and the handles loosen up all the time. Also have to retighten them often and even then the taps and dies often will fall out when using them.
I have made some mods to mine and added some Loctite to the “stationary” side of the handles, and they work a little better. With that said the small tap wrench for tight spaces actually works fairly well.
Much better than the main one. Also the dies just have a smooth round outer surface with a couple dimples. They don’t have any flat sides which not only makes it harder to keep in the wrench, but also makes it so you can not use an adjustable wrench or socket in order to use a die in a tight space.
So if you need to rethread a stud or something, and the die wrench won’t fit/turn in that space. then you’re just out of luck. TIPS: For the price, they are a decent set of threading tools if you are careful with them.
Don’t push them too hard and make sure to ALWAYS use a good cutting oil. Also use a “1 step forward, 2 steps back” sort of motion when cutting. Most people will just try to push a tap or die forward, as if they were tightening a bolt or nut.
If you do that you will break a tap for sure. When you move backwards, it cuts the shavings off and clears the chips out which stops it from binding. Also if you are tapping a blind hole, then be sure to remove the tap and blow the shavings out of the hole every so often.
Otherwise the tap will bottom out to soon and either break the tap or strip out your threads. You do not want to break a tap, as if the broken piece(s) are stuck in the hole. Then you will need left hand drill bit and HOPE it grabs enough to spin it out.
If that doesn’t work then you’re really hurting as taps and dies are made of hardened tool steel, and you need a “drill bit” that is harder than the tap. Which likely means a special carbide bit. I’ve had this happen with taps before, which made me learn NOT to break one.
If you go easy, take it slow, and use a good cutting oil like “Tap Magic”. you’re usually ok. Like I said, I’ve learned the hard way and even with this cheap set I haven’t broken a tap. I use them in my home shop on a fairly regular basis.
And having the metric set has really helped me out multiple times. If you mod your wrenches, or get replacements (which is harder to find a good one that will fit the smooth round dies) then it would help more.
In the end I would buy again, and actually am planning on buying a second set now just for backups. Just in case I do break a tap or if one gets dull etc. As I can buy this whole set cheaper than just a few replacement taps/dies would cost.
I have been working on vehicles for over 30 years. I have used Pittsburgh hand tools almost since I began working on cars (since 1998). The first set I purchased was a 1/4 inch, 3/8 inch and 1/2 inch ratchet mechanic combo set.
The set was purchased when my tools came up missing. I thought this set would be a good starter set to get some jobs done. You know what, there hasn’t been too many jobs I have done that I couldn’t reach into that set to do the job for over 20 years.
I also have not had a single item from that set fail. Now that’s saying something. This tap and die set is over $40. 00 less than the equivalent set that a local competitor sells and I believe the quality is just as good.
I was able to tap new threads for all four dust shields on an old Mercury Sable. Went through several drill bits, but used the same tap on the job for every hole. Now I know that the drill bits were drilling old hardened steel screws, but it’s not like I was tapping aluminum on this old Mercury either.
All in all, I continue to be impressed with the quality, durability and value of the Pittsburgh tools. Lifetime warranty! What else can one say!.
Recently got this set and tapped a new 10-24 threaded hole on my table top grinder housing with plenty of oil. It was easy and my only concern is that the smaller tap holder will not hold very small or very large taps.
This issue is corrected when using the larger tap holder which was easy. Rethreaded a screw with 10-24 die using oil as well and it did require more some back and forth effort than the tapping to remove debris but eventually within a few minutes I was successful.
I check the tap and die tool threads afterward and they were nice and clean with no damage. I tapped aluminum and chased new threads on a steel screw. All in all this set is a must and great for the value.
Word of advice is to ensure you are using the correct tap or die for the application as it should not take great effort to thread a new hole or rethread a screw. I was a first timer at this but had seen many videos on how to use a tap and die set.
This model 7559 39 piece kit is made with high-quality milled alloy tool steel. The metric tap and die set allows you to repair, clean and form new threads, giving new life to your worn mating pieces.
The case keeps everything neat and organized. The steel tap and die set includes coarse and fine sizes up to 12mm, including 3 and 4 flute plug taps and dies for hand-threading applications. Set includes: 1 long handle tap wrench, 1 tin handle tap wrench, 1 die stock, 1/8 inch flat screwdriver, 1 thread pitch gauge, 17 plug type taps & 17 dies.
I liked the price on both SAE and metric sets, so ordered both. Tho I haven’t used either yet, they appear to be of the quality I anticipated. The real test will be when I put them to work. I purchased these sets based on the Tekton name they carry.
Reviews I’ve read on other Tekton products, which have always been favorable. Having lost sets of Craftsmen due to thieves several years ago, I decided to go with these based on price, as well as the Tekton name.
I’m anticipating these will be of equal quality and workmanship. If so, I’ll be well satisfied.
It’s fine for the bucks haven’t even used it yet. Comparing it to now ancient Craftsman SAE set forget what that cost still going strong. One issue noticed – just the plastic case watch out it’s cheap junk and you need that or be lost looking for correct one you need, Tom G.
Never had any trouble fixing and making new threads on bolts and rods. Wish the set went up to 1 inch, but I am glad I have this set, a bigger set would be to heavy. Next is to get from 1/2 inch to 1 inch set.
Features Includes plug tap and hexagonal die in sizes from 3mm to 12mm and #4 to 1/2 in fine and coarse threads plus 1/8-27Bsp and 1/8-27Npt pipe taps and dies. Set also comes with plain die stock adjustable die stock adjustable handle tap wrench T-tap wrench T-tap wrench with 3/8 square drive 16-leaf metric thread pitch gage 18-leaf standard thread pitch gage mini screwdriver Set comes organized in a rugged hinged plastic case.
This is a solid set of taps and dies for the $80 I paid for it. I have not used it to try to tap new threads, but I used it to re-thread the shifter and knob on my manual transmission. I completely messed up these threads when I dropped the trans to replace the clutch, so the knob would thread on (with a lot of effort) but would not bottom out.
I used the M10x1. 25 tap to chase the threads in the knob, and the M10x1. 25 die to chase the threads on the shifter, now everything works like brand new! I’m going to be dropping the transmission again soon (to swap a flywheel), and i’ll be using these to chase the mounting holes as well as the exhaust downpipe flange threads (completely corroded), so we’ll see how they work on harder metals.
For chasing threads, I could not be more pleased – and the kit includes most typical JIS sizes.
Decent quality tap and die set. I would say there are better and worse sets available as far as quality. This set seems to be a compromise of the machinist quality and imported junk. Decent enough set for most general use with a good range of thread pitches available.
If it is cheaper made than this set you are probably wasting your money. Appears to be the same quality as a tool truck set but at half the price.
This is a really nice set of metric taps and dies; makes hand-threading new holes/threads for nuts and bolts a breeze. I recently installed an oil cooler onto one of the bumpers of my car and I was able to thread in new bolts to the steel with ease.
I’d recommend using a step bit with cutting oil before doing any work with them though.
GEARWRENCH has taken the ratcheting wrench design and applied it to the tap and die application. The ratcheting handles and adapters allow for easy back and forth movement required while cutting threads on either taps or dies.
The 5 ratcheting arc with reversing lever eliminates hand over hand turning. The hex die adapters work on either round or hex shaped dies.
Priced well below the other quality competitors. I think this kit is over engineered for casual use, which suits me well. I wouldn’t expect it to withstand commercial use, although it might. I chose the GEARWRENCH 3887 Tap and Die 75 Piece Set – Combination SAE / Metric and continue to think that I purchased the right size kit.
I don’t want to experience the disappointment of discovering that I don’t have the necessary size, but will be okay if I don’t have a very unusual size. There are other things that I want to spend my money on.
Ya know. Very happy with this set and I feel like a magician when I need to use these.
Whether creating new tools from raw steel or repairing damaged and worn threads, achieving a precise fit is essential. IRWIN Industrial Tools sets the standard for delivering quality every step of the way in your threading applications.
If you’re looking for a tap and die set then you already know there is a wide range of tools you can buy from really expensive to really cheap. I needed a specific size and this kit had it and it’s a high-quality kit so I got it.
If I were doing varying sizes it would depend on my budget, but I’d probably buy a “cheaper” brand and when one of the dies broke I’d just replace it with a higher quality version.
My old “Harbor Freight” set was finally coming to “end of life”. I needed a new set and decided to get a “Made in USA” brand and pay a bit more for a higher quality set. This exactly fit the bill, good value and well made.
M3 to M12 alloy steel tap and die set. Taps supplied in three types for each size, taper (starting), second tap (intermediate) and plug (bottoming), matched by equivalent sized dies. Provides all functions required for a professional engineer.
Set includes tap wrench, steel die handle, screw pitch gauge and screwdriver. Supplied in metal case.
The taps and dies themselves seem remarkably good. It is good the dies are split so they can be tightened a little with every application – and having three taps (taper, intermediate and plug)per thread size is also very good.
The set covers all the most frequently used metric sizes between M3 and M12. The steel case is quite nicely made too. However the tap and die wrenches are not as nicely made – hence why I gave the set four stars.
Worse, the thread gauge and the screwdriver really belong in a cheap Christmas cracker! Overall good value for money, but spoilt by poor quality wrenches and ancillary tools.
An affordable set that allows me to cut new threads, not just clean up old ones, thanks to the split dies. So many cheap solid diesets are simply useless for this. The inclusion of a thread gauge is a nice touch, lid is a bit tight but it wont open by accident too easily!!.
The taps and dies are of good quality but, as others have said, the die holder and handles are not really strong enough for the larger sizes of dies; some of the screws have stripped the thread which isnt great but for occasional diy use theyre ok.

Surprised at the quality at this price point. Works well in mild steel, no issues. I can see why others recommend it. I’m not a heavy user of taps and dies so not sure how the set works in constant use but for my purposes excellent.
Die adapter works on round and hex shaped dies. Ratcheting T-handles wind dies with a 5° swing arc and have a reversing lever to eliminate hand-over-hand turning. Twist Lock guide system reduces the “walk back” of the die guide and keeps the dies centered while cutting.
Die adapters work with the 3/8′′ drive Pass-Thru ratchet and socket system as well as socket accessories. Auto-locking feature allow the tap adapters to be removed safely. Spring-loaded cap allows for quick release of large tap adapter.
Drive extension adapters provide greater access in confined areas when used with 3/8′′ drive extensions. Ratcheting T-wrench works with GEARWRENCH Pass-Thru socket system. Blow mold case with tilted tap holders for easy access and secure storage.
IRWIN HANSON Taps & Dies are the answer when you’re working with a variety of tradesmen to solve endless fastening challenge. Whether creating new tools from raw steel or repairing damaged and worn threads, achieving a precise fit is essential.
IRWIN Industrial Tools sets the standard for delivering quality every step of the way in your threading applications.
Although there are hundreds of different types of fasteners, most of them have the same basic design: a spiral groove inside a hole matches the threads on the outside diameter of a screw or bolt. IRWIN Hanson taps and dies are the tools used by professionals to create threads and solve the most challenging fastener applications.
This set contains the top 5 machine screw and fractional sizes.
There are several reviews of this set that I feel make good points. The wrench is cheap, the case is cheap. I will likely replace these with something sturdier. The tap and dies however appear to be of very good quality.
Granted, I am mainly using them on plumbing fixtures (i. e. , brass and copper), so I am not giving them a robust test. But the threads I have added have been precise and at least as good as factory.
I have also used these to fix threads. When I bought this set I was actually looking for a rethreading set, and couldn’t find one in the size I needed, so settled on this. At worst I thought I would drill out to the next size and rethread.
I have read in many places a tap and die set will bore out existing threads, leaving your bolts lose or poorly fitting. I have not had this problem. At least one reviewer complained of the price. I have never seen a tap and die set sell for anything near this price, and was very glad to find it.
Overall, if not for the price, I would grant this set three stars. But they appear to have applied value to the cutting pieces, the most important part, and I award an extra star for the value of this set.
I had an old threaded set that the set screw would not hold the die in place. The new design of this product made cutting threads easy on 1/4 inch stock with no problems of the die shifting. Very happy with this purchase.
The only thing I wish was the handles were different. I added a dowel to each side to make more hand fit friendly.
good but far from perfect. Used it once to thread a 1/4″ stainless steel bar. The bits are excellent, real workhorses. The wrench it came with though, is made of some kind of mild steel. The arms started to deform after a few minutes of use.
I ended up bending them back when i was done, but the bits worked. I’d probably like to have a stronger wrench mount for the bits, with more leverage.
Excellent Heavy Duty Tool case with Hinge Latches. Taps seem sharp to the touch; Dies do not have burrs in them as some others have reported. Used a Tap the first day delivered; no problem, use cutting oil and recommend drill size.
Unique Tap and Die holders, made in Taiwan where better tools are made rather than mainland China where Craftsmen and others brands come from.
I have two of these tap and die sets that I use in my home machine shop. These are no by means precision tools. I use them in my home shop and have been mostly satisfied. I would recommend that you avoid using the taps on any of the 300 series stainless steels or harder steels, especially the smaller taps.
You will risk breaking them no matter how much you paid for that cutting oil. I’ve broken a couple, and the bought good quality individual HSS taps to replace them. I’ve had better results with the dies and larger taps.
After checking alternatives and costs, I had to settle on this set for a number of reasons. This set contained nearly all the common fine and course threads for both Tap and Dies. I noticed that all the Taps and Dies are stamped with the sizes, not inked or laser.
The Dies are split type with 3 screws for adjustments. If you aren’t familiar with split dies, they have a standard size at “rest”. The gap for all the Dies are about the same at. 080in. When you drive the center screw into the gap, the tapered tip opens the Die to a larger diameter.
On the other hand, if you drive the 2 outside screws into the Die, you can compress the Die to a smaller diameter. The measured difference was measured and equates to be about +17% to -18% on the 6mm Die and more than that on the 24mm Die.
This allows for slightly off size diameter adjustments. If you want the Die to remain the same, just screw the center screw to snug and screw the 2 outside in to secure the Die against the center screw.
The supplied screwdriver is adequate for this. As to using the Die for cutting new threads, you’ll notice that the Die is stamped with the size on the face. This face is the side where the starting threads are tapered for accepting a rod for threading.
The back – un-stamped side is not to be used for starting threading as it has no tapered entry. As for the Taps, they measured within. 0005 in of German metric taps I already had. The Taps also have stamped sizes on the shank not inked or lasered.
If you notice the top of each Tap has a manufacturing hole where the tap was centered. This hole can be used to insert your tap follower so you stabilize the top of the Tap during turns to get good alignment into the hole.
Only the smallest Tap is void of the hole. The Taps had very few, but only minor marks, certainly not enough to change the cutting. I mention this because a prior reviewer complained about this. I noticed that the threads on the leading cutting edge were clean, no burrs, no debris as also reported in other reviews.
The plastic box containing all the parts must have been made on a good day, as all the Taps and Dies do NOT fall out. In fact, the screwdriver had to be used to pry the Dies out of the holes. Each slot or hole has raised dimensions for the parts at each position for permanent labeling.
I used a couple Dies to cut some threads on bolts, one bolt was re-cut and I could hear the familiar sound of chips getting cut under pressure with out having loss of any Die threads, just lots of chips.
Coating was still on Die when done. As for the Warranty, the clerk at checkout re-assured me that if I had any problems with any of the parts in the Metric Tap Die set, to just return to the store with the part and receipt for exchange.
Lastly, the Serial # for your kit (if like mine), was on a sticker inside the included instructions applied to the record line on P. 3. To me this was a good purchase due to the variety of Taps / Dies and their ability to be adjusted.
About a year ago I bought the corresponding SAE (i. e. , fractional) set of taps & dies, and it suffered a number of annoying flaws: E. g. , the tools dropped out of the case whenever it was opened, the taps & dies were poorly marked, and one of the taps was pointed at both ends.
Still, they made good thread chasers and, at the sale price, it was worth it for the large wrenches alone. The metric set that I just bought appears to be of better quality. For instance, the case fits much tighter and doesn’t spill tools on the floor when it’s opened, and now the size numberings on the taps & dies are etched (rather than inked or painted on).
However, the maker’s quality control still has room to improve: E. g. , the corresponding tap to the dual-pointed one in the SAE set is still pointed at both ends, making it impossible to use my tap follower to ensure a square fit.
I live in Bixby Knolls in Long Beach and the homes are nice but they are old. 1929 Construction. Well when there are plumbing issues it’s true. Plumbers do make more than brain surgeons. I’m up to try anything and my plumbing was history in a couple of places and duct tape doesn’t work on everything.
So I asked some friend how hard it was to rap and die. They said take your time and go slow because once you make a mistake you are history. That was nice to hear! But that was the theme. So I bought this set because it was the best they had.
I watched some you tubes and practiced on some bolts and nuts in a vise and when I felt confident I went for it and I was so Proud of myself because all my estimates were $300 to $600 Dollars and it could take a week or so because they were going to have to take my Plumbing to their place and do it so it would be like new.
Whatever that means. I think they were going to resurface, or Re-Chrome the Plumbing Fixtures. Well you can see how much I saved. I did have to use a couple of extra wraps of Teflon tape, which is common with a job like this.
But the tools are high quality and this set is the one to get or higher. The lesser quality sets are going to be less accurate in my opinion. Because to be honest I did try them and my friends advised me on that also.
They said the tool you are going to use has to be of higher strength and quality than what you are using them on, or the result will not be the same as if you started off correctly. Again they were right! So you tube and this kit saved me at least $500 so far, and I got the satisfaction of doing something I never thought of doing before, and it wasn’t hard! Thanks Harbor Freight! You came through again as usual! Have fun you guys and do the job yourself!.
Get down to the nuts and bolts with this comprehensive threading tool set. Kit contains a wide assortment of taps, dies and accessories. Strong high-carbon steel construction helps ensure precision tooling.
Handy molded-plastic carrying case keeps everything organized.
Taps and dies seems really good but there were two problems with my set. First, the case has one of those bendy plastic tabs with snap on it. Definitely guaranteed not to last very long and the corner of the case has a gap of about 1/8” open.
Case does not live up to the price of the set. Secondly, the tap handle has an adjustable centering mechanism. The screws and sliders for the guide were all loose and rolling around inside the set. Its a miracle that some of them did not fall out of the gappy case corner.
Come on Irwin, just a little care in packing would have caught that. Take some Made in the USA pride please. I expect this from Chinese manufacturers not Irwin.
I bought this set used, like new for cheap and so far it has served me well. I’ve used most of the taps so far in mostly aluminum, brass, and cast iron and they have worked exactly as you would expect.
I haven’t cut any threads with it yet but the taps ate accurate so I have no doubt about the dies.
Nice Looking Tap Set, However the quality of the taps are poor. We used a tap one time and the edges on the tap showed wear. The second time we used the same tap it did not cut sharp threads and we were concerned about the tap breaking off due to the excessive force required to turn the dull tap.
Breathe New Life into Hardware This Craftsman combination carbon steel set helps you work with damaged nuts, bolts and threads. When a replacement bolt is hard to find, you can use this tap and die set to remove imperfections from threads.
You’ll be ready to take on any job with both inch and metric sizes.
My friend got a metric tap and die set from Harbor Freight as a Christmas gift, a week before I bought my Craftsman set with some Christmas money. We happened to compare the two kits, and realized the tap handles were exactly identical, along with other components in the kit.
Most tools are Chinese made nowadays, including Craftsman, which used to be American made. The price wasn’t terrible, but I still could have paid less to get the same exact thing at Harbor Freight. It’s not worth it to spend more for Craftsman anymore – they’re just a name now.
Even their lifetime warranty is useless, since it doesn’t apply to taps and dies. Harbor Freight’s lifetime warranty, on the contrary, does! The only advantage this kit has over other Chinese-made ones is the fact that the dies are hexagonal shaped, which means they can be used with a wrench or socket in tight spaces.
Not a total waste of money – they’ll get the job done, but I learned my lesson about buying modern-day Craftsman tools. no wonder why Sears is going under!.
This set is a great buy for the price. I work in the fabrication/weld shop division of a machine shop and from time to time mechanical jobs become part of assembly and disassembly of different components and there has been plenty of times during the reassembly of these different components we find that the bolts or threads of these components become slightly damaged during the disassembly process.
This set comes in very handy for the reconditioning of the threads of these holes or bolts and screws. I used to have to borrow Die nuts and Taps from the machine division of the company but now with this set on hand the job gets done quicker due to the fact that I don’t have to hunt down a Die nut or Tap to straighten out a thread.
I’m very glad I purchased this set and plan to add the additional set from 1/2 to 3/4 which will be even better for versatility. The set is of good quality and should last a long time with proper use, not abuse.
This tap and cutting iron set consists of 111 parts. This tool set is a must for professionals and do-it-yourselfers. Instead of looking for the right thread cutter or cutting iron, it’s much cheaper and more time-saving to have an entire set on hand to get started right away.
The tools are made of extra hard carbon steel and are particularly suitable for cutting very fine threads. This tool set contains everything you need for thread cutting. The tool set is also supplied in a carrying case, which facilitates transport.
For less than 100 euros you can not hope to have high quality, the finish of the tools are correct. The taps can repair a damaged thread or tap a low density steel but you can not launch it in the actual thread in conventional iron.
It is a good product for occasional troubleshooting.
Whether creating new tools from raw steel or repairing damaged and worn threads, achieving a precise fit is essential. IRWIN Industrial Tools sets the standard for delivering quality every step of the way in your threading applications.
