I expect the three “amusements” to be a well-received birthday gift for my daughter who regularly hosts Monday Night Dinner for family (cancelled until everyone was vaccinated for Covid). I’ve been tempted to unseal the cute little containers but have not, wanting to keep them intact until daughter’s birthday.
I have already given two of the games I purchased as hostess gifts and we ended up Playing the games. It was a huge success. Everyone wanted to know where I purchased them. Still have several that I will be using for stocking stuffers at Christmas.
THE #1 SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLERFrom the UK’s favourite therapist, as seen on Channel 4’s Grayson’s Art Club. ‘ A wonderful book’ Richard Osman’So clear and true. In this Sunday Times bestseller, leading psychotherapist Philippa Perry reveals the vital do’s and don’ts of relationships.
This is a book for us all. Whether you are interested in understanding how your upbringing has shaped you, looking to handle your child’s feelings or wishing to support your partner, you will find indispensable information and realistic tips in these pages.
Philippa Perry’s sane, sage and judgement-free advice is an essential resource on how to have the best possible relationships with the people who matter to you most. _____________________________________________________________________________________’It gave me hope as a new parent’ Babita Sharma’This has genuinely had such a positive impact on my life and my relationship with my daughter’ Josh Widdicombe’She writes with an inquisitive elegance rarely found in parenting guides.
it is forgiving and persuasive’ Hadley Freeman, the Guardian ‘Philippa Perry is one of the wisest, most sane and secure people I’ve ever met’ Decca Aitkenhead, Sunday Times Magazine.
Sound, down to earth advice on how children should be treated, loved and understood and how parents can choose to heed without feeling dictated to. However it can (unintentionally) make you feel guilty by seeing the many mistakes we’ve made in the nurturing and rearing of our own children.
And cringe at how badly our own parents unknowingly or otherwise reared us. Allows you to rethink the importance of childhood and appreciate their struggle with adults’ expectations. Helping create happy, strong, confident well balanced children has to be something all parents and teachers should strive for.
Contemporary psychological insights into how our own childhood experiences unconsciously influence the way we parent our children. Profoundly wise, simply written and infused with examples that everyone can relate to.
I bought an extra copy for a friend and others have bought copies on my recommendation – we now have conversations about the positive changes we see in our relationships with our teenagers. Advice ranges from communicating with infants to adult children and even partners.
A good book for all new parents. Though some of the advice I could imagine parents of twins (or more) or of children of very similar ages being exasperated at expected to allow their little darlings to argue with you the merrits of not putting on their coat to go out on a cold day, and you sitting there trying to reason with them that of course it’s not fair they should have to wear a coat if they don’t want to.
You totally understand! Ms Perry has had only one child, which would make lengthy negotiation a little bit more bearable and possible. But not if you have twins or more and they’re all playing up. I think it would be more of a case of Put your coat on now, we are going out, and you can scream all you like, but too bad! I haven’t had kids, but I was a nanny.
Do you feel that your family is not what it used to be, or what it has the potential to be? Do you worry that the parenting decisions you’re making today may be scarring your child for life? Do you sometimes feel you are in a tug-of-war with the world over who will shape your child’s values and beliefs? Phil offers a new classic on family life — and gives parents real answers and a plan for being the most positive and effective parents possible.
Starting right now, you can begin to make realistic choices and take day-to-day actions that can make your family phenomenal. You must decide that you will lead your family with strength and love and that peace and joy are not just for the people next door or on TV.
They’re for your family. Phil gives it to parents straight: even in this fast-paced world your family should be the center of your life and your child’s life. Parenting is the most important and noble act you will ever undertake, yet American families are threatened like never before from the inside as well as the outside — many of us fight too much, don’t get involved enough in our children’s lives, or get bogged down in life’s daily struggles instead of keeping our eye on the big picture of our family’s well-being.
Phil has been working with families for over twenty-five years to help them repair the fissures that have fractured their home lives. In Family First, he provides a proven action plan to help parents determine the strengths and weaknesses of their parenting style.
His 7 Tools for Purposeful Parenting cover the most important elements for any parent: parenting for success — for the purpose of raising cooperative, caring, and competent children. Exercises, scripts, assessments, solutions for specific problems, and precise directions for implementing the steps you need to take are all included in this landmark work.
Phil shows parents how to make changes now — how to put a stop to your children’s tantrums; talk to them about peer pressure or self-esteem; instill values like integrity, honesty, and respect for other people; and bring order back to your house.
If you want your child to have a happy, fulfilled life, you must open your eyes to the crucial role you play in his or her development. Most important, Dr. Phil’s new book offers you and your family hope — for a phenomenal home life now, and a productive, fulfilling future for your children.
As Dr. Phil says, you are not just raising children, you are also raising adults, and everything you do today impacts what kind of adult your child will become. You are building the future.
This is a book that i would recommend to young couples contemplating having children or who have children. For people who already have children, this book is a how to, when we “already have done” what we were taught, how to raise our children.
This book gives insight into how to raise your chil/children, but it is not one i would recommend for people in their 30’s and 40’s but for people in their 20’s. I found it excruciating to read and put it away and am contemplating the trash can.
Today’s generation of child rearing is not like the Dr Phil’s time, and this is what he projects in his book.
I like the way the book is written, easy to comprehend. I bought this book to better myself as a family member and parent and also to help my daughter become a better parent. I bought two books so we can each read on our own time then come together to discuss what we’ve learned.
FINALIST FOR THE BOOKS FOR A BETTER LIFE AWARD NEW YORK TIMESBESTSELLER “Parents. you will be wowed and awed by [Dr. Oprah Winfrey As seen on Oprah s Super – Soul Sunday, a radically transformative plan that shows parents how to raise children to be their best, truest selves, from the – New York Timesbestselling author of – What if.

That you can create close and connected relationships within your family? Would you accept this invitation to a revolution in parenting? This book will take you on a journey to transcending your fears and illusions around parenting and help you become the parent you always wanted to be: fully present and conscious. It will arm you with practical, hands-on strategies and real-life examples from my experience as a parent and clinical psychologist that show the extraordinary power of being a conscious parent.
Everyone in your family is ready to be awakened. Will you take this journey with me? Shefali”.
Having two children (2yo, 6mo) is increasingly making me aware of my own personal flaws and temperaments, and how they may be limiting my relationship with my children. Whilst this book seems better aimed to parents of older children or teenagers, I cannot recommend it enough for the revelations it has offered me to evaluate my behaviour towards my 2 year old son to better connect with him.
This book has helped me understand child’s behaviour and how to receive it. I have never read a parenting book before, however I feel almost anyone would get many positive concepts out of this well-written book.
Definitely changed my approach and the way I deal with my daughter on a daily basis! Now I always think before I react to a situation and try to understand where this certain behaviour might be coming from as we the adults are those who mostly triggers a kids non acceptable/ bad/ inappropriate, (you name it ) behaviour.
Raising a kid is about raising yourself first. Excellent book!.
Every parent should read this book. I love Dr. Shefali and her unique way of inspiring us to become firstly a more concious person and secondly and more importanrtly a concious parent. If we all followed her advise, how amazing the next generation of children would be!.
From the author: “I didn t write this book because mothering little ones is easy for me. I wrote it because it isn t. I know that this is a hard job, because I am right here in the middle of it. I know you need encouragement because I do too.
“This is not a tender reminiscence from someone who had children so long ago that she only remembers the sweet parts. At the time of writing this, I have three children in diapers, and I can recognize the sound of hundreds of toothpicks being dumped out in the hall.
“This is a small collection of thoughts on mothering young children for when you are motivated, for when you are discouraged, for the times when discipline seems fruitless, and for when you are just plain old tired.
“The opportunities for growth abound here but you have to be willing. You have to open your heart to the tumble. As you deal with your children, deal with yourself always and first. This is what it looks like, and feels like, to walk as a mother with God.
I have 3 little ones ages 5 and under. This is a busy, crazy time of life. Toothpaste messes and little ones asking for a snack when they didn’t eat their lunch and you’re tired. Rachel’s writing is simple but clever; each chapter is short and sweet.
A good, easy read for a mom who is tired. She is real and sympathetic, but she wants us to work hard for our little ones and not allow ourselves to be lazy. No blowing up at the kid who pushes our stress over the top, no excusing sins because we don’t want to work on them, no ignoring the individual talents and interests of our kids, even if they are interested in different things than we are.
I find her writing refreshing, amusing, and solid good stuff.
This is great encouragement for the new mother. Short chapters easy read to put a smile on your face as you collapse for a nap or at night or to get some encouragement while nursing your little one. Great for a shower gift! Diapers are wonderful – but what about a little something for the mother ;-).
This book is great for the mom that may be currently a little “in the trenches. ” It couldn’t be title any better. It is an easy read with short chapters so very practical for moms. Moms with young ones will definitely be able to relate and be inspired and motivated while reading.
Great gift of a pep talk during this challenging phase of life.
This New York Times bestseller intimately depicts urban life in a gripping book that slips behind cold statistics and sensationalism to reveal the true sagas lurking behind the headlines of gangsta glamour.
In her extraordinary bestseller, Adrian Nicole LeBlanc immerses readers in the intricacies of the ghetto, revealing the true sagas lurking behind the headlines of gangsta glamour, gold-drenched drug dealers, and street-corner society.
Focusing on two romances—Jessica’s dizzying infatuation with a hugely successful young heroin dealer, Boy George, and Coco’s first love with Jessica’s little brother, Cesar—Random Family is the story of young people trying to outrun their destinies.
Jessica and Boy George ride the wild adventure between riches and ruin, while Coco and Cesar stick closer to the street, all four caught in a precarious dance between survival and death. Friends get murdered; the DEA and FBI investigate Boy George; Cesar becomes a fugitive; Jessica and Coco endure homelessness, betrayal, the heartbreaking separation of prison, and, throughout it all, the insidious damage of poverty.
Charting the tumultuous cycle of the generations—as girls become mothers, boys become criminals, and hope struggles against deprivation—LeBlanc slips behind the cold statistics and sensationalism and comes back with a riveting, haunting, and true story.
A must read!! Jessica and Cesar are brother and sister living in a family trying to make it in the middle of a drug infested neighborhood. Coco, who lives down the block, falls in love with Cesar while staring out her living room window.
Jessica, a girl who has always wanted more, gets involved with one of the neighborhoods most dangerous heroin dealers, Boy George. Both romances take a turn when Boy George is arrested and jailed for his gang activities, Jessica is convicted as an accessory, and Cesar goes to jail, leaving Coco pregnant and alone.
The rest of the story follows Jessica, Cesar, and Coco as they each try to make it through what theyve been dealt and dealt themselves. Coco ends up the mother of more children than she can afford, finding herself homeless and trying to navigate the complex welfare system alone.
The book profiles the other people in and out of these three lives to paint a portrait of ghetto life as one generations mistakes seem to doom the next before they even have a chance to grow up.
A remarkable social study of the lives of people born into generational poverty, with all the ills that accompany the inner city: addiction, abuse, teen pregnancies, joblessness, homelessness, etc. in addition to families further broken by the criminal justice system.
I would love to see a follow-up by the author to learn how the children in this book are faring as adults, since this was written over ten years ago. An excellent picture of a slice of America that we forget exists.
It’s a long story but a touching one at that. If you’ve grown up around bad influences and troubling neighborhoods and people this book is a story you can enjoy and relate. It’s definitely one of my favorites.
In this remarkable self-help guide, Dr. Susan Forward drawn on case histories and the real-life voices of adult children of toxic parents to help you free yourself from the frustrating patterns of your relationship with your parent.
A book I wish I would have received as a child. Mother was an alcoholic, suicidal, physically abusive verbally destructive, emotionally draining, fragile creature. Our absent dad is a homosexual, narcissistic socio-path / pscyho-path who got away with murder 50 years earlier.
We have lost 5 out of 25 cousins to suicide so far (that doesn’t count drugs, alcohol-related death, or over-eating contributing to early death). In any event, the author’s sample stories help me have empathy for other hurt children and provided encouragement to start the journey to healing at age 53.
It fantastic book. Suddenly all make sense and helped and guide me to be better me. Things that You knew but you did not how to acmoledge or understand. It all written there. I never read self help book but this book I recommend to all the people suffer anixty, depression due to family relationships.
It gave me a first step to understand what’s going on within me some insite to parents why how all the question. but best thing is I realized I am not alone and I do not need to drag the pain forever.
When some one who can put a words to the unknown. Unknown is no longer the monster that I fear but a problem you can face and put a strategy to move forward. Thanks 2 years on I am better me and with outcome I never thought to have.
I bought this book the year it came out. I have suggested it to so many people. Everyone knows someone that was a victim, is a victim, or is the struggling parent. I was a Day Care worker and wanted to recognize children with toxic parents.
I suggest to others that when you read it, you need to keep in mind, the parents, the grandparents, yourself if it is for you, the children and their children. All generations have to be forgiven to start the healing.
Without forgiveness, the healing will not complete. It doesn’t mean you set yourself up for more punishment, It means, simply, learn to let go of anger and revenge as well as hurt and begin to heal. Generation after generation can only heal when one person decides to end the pain and start a new way of raising children and being a better parent.
This book can give anyone that reads it direction to do just that as well as direction to guide others through the steps of healing.
Based on the public television series of the same name, Bradshaw On: The Family is John Bradshaw’s seminal work on the dynamics of families that has sold more than a million copies since its original publication in 1988.
Within its pages, you will discover the cause of emotionally impaired families. You will learn how unhealthy rules of behavior are passed down from parents to children, and the destructive effect this process has on our society.
Using the latest family research and recovery material in this new edition, Bradshaw also explores the individual in both a family and societal setting. He shows you ways to escape the tyranny of family-reinforced behavior traps–from addiction and co-dependency to loss of will and denial–and demonstrates how to make conscious choices that will transform your life and the lives of your loved ones.
He helps you heal yourself and then, using what you have learned helps you heal your family. Finally, Bradshaw extends this idea to our society: by returning yourself and your family to emotional health, you can heal the world in which you live.
He helps you reenvision societal conflicts from the perspective of a global family, and shares with you the power of deep democracy: how the choices you make every day can affect–and improve–your world.
This book will give you the best understanding of how the behaviors in a dysfunctional family are passed from one person to another. You’ll understand how and why the dysfunctional family unit, if broken up, will reform itself where an addict will unconsciously find another codependent, where a codependent will unconsciously find another addict.
Awareness is the beginning of change. This book will get you there like no other. Also see Bradshaw’s video of the same title if you can. These materials are available at most all public libraries. Action empowers and this book is a great starting point.
The author goes deep into origins of toxic shame and offers the ways to work on it, gives very valuable insights into our behavioral problems that are hard to come across in self-help literature. I’m giving it 4 stars because some paragraphs in the beginning are difficult to understand, and because of his praise for AA where it’s common for people to shame each other for their character defects.
Overall, I’m glad I found this book, it’s been very helpful, and I highly recommend it.
This book from “the past” is still an excellent work. I bought it for a friend who is finding the work helpful in moving on from certain issues. Nothing is really new under the sun for family pain and this author hits close to home with healing and wisdom.

Dr. Phil is always great at giving advice on real life and getting real about your life. I have read many self help books by many famous authors. Dr. Phil is one of my favorites. He addresses family problems and ways to make them better.
Also a little insider secret- He is from a troubled home, so he has been there. I have a real appreciation for a writer who is a parent and has gone through difficulties and not just learned from a text book.
Want to get real and make your life a little easier. Read or listen to this book and Apply, Apply, Apply it to your life. Only you can make the changes. Great information like this book can help. Enjoy.
My wife listens to it because our former daughter-in-law walked away from her 5 year old and 1 year old sons and husband. The oldest grandson overheard a part of the tape and commented, “The man said it’s not our fault mommie left.

IšverstiShow in original languageThis book is a wonderful way to store important family information. The illustrations are fun, interesting, and appropriate. It was very satisfying to compile this information to give to our daughter as a wedding gift.
The groom’s parents filled out their part as well. Working together on this project when we don’t know them well was a bonding project.

There is also helpful websites at the end and the book is pretty thick and has some weight to it.
A perfect book to have on a shelf for generations to come and update.
IšverstiShow in original languagethis is a great start to your family history a little on the american angle but able to alter not quite enough space foe all the family only goes back to the 4th generation but a good buy to give to grand children.
Everyone in my family is a killer. Everyone in my family is a suspect. But which of them is a murderer? ‘The best thing I’ve read in ages’ STUART MACBRIDE ‘I absolutely LOVED it. Engaging, entertaining and charming’ MARIAN KEYES ‘Clever, unexpected, and not to be missed’ KARIN SLAUGHTER ‘Utterly original, hugely entertaining, and a must-read for every fan of the mystery genre’ JANE HARPER _________ I was dreading the Cunningham family reunion even before the first murder.
Before the storm stranded us at the mountain resort. The thing is, us Cunninghams don’t really get along. My brother, my step-sister, my wife, my father, my mother, my sister-in-law, my uncle, my step-father, my aunt.
Even me. When they find the first body in the snow, it’s clear that only a Cunningham could have committed the crime – and it’s up to me to prove it. There are plenty of killers in my family. But only one murderer.
_________ Why readers are loving Everyone In My Family Has Killed Someone ‘Sharp. Slick. Original’ 5***** Reader Review ‘Fun, witty and exciting – this is not one to miss!’ 5***** Reader Review ‘Darkly atmospheric and full of mystery.
I loved it’ 5***** Reader Review ‘This is without doubt going to be the standout novel of the year’ 5***** Reader Review ‘I absolutely loved this from start to finish. Dark, atmospheric and funny, I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves a good murder mystery’ 5***** Reader Review.
I bought this book because of the title and had not heard of the author, but I will be seeking out more of his books, that’s for sure! Not only was this a wonderful thriller/ murder mystery but it referenced the golden era of crime writing in the 1930s.
It references authors Agatha Christie ( and Mary Westmacott), Conan Doyle, GK Chesterton and Dorothy Sayers as well as Ronald Knox’s 10 commandments of detective fiction at the start of the book. This book was written in an unusual style which I thoroughly enjoyed.
It was actually quite funny too! This book has the best prologue I’ve ever read. I love that the narrator is the main character too. In fact, the whole book is very unique and refreshing. It’s a wonderfully inventive plot with twits and turns and then more turns.
I also learnt a few things from this book too that I googled along the way. Who knew murder mystery novels could be so educational! It was written really well( which can’t be said of all modern novels),was fast paced paced and exciting.
I was both excitedly reading through to get to the end as quick as possible and trying to figure out the clues along the way. Actually a list of clues is provided by the narrator on a certain page, to give the reader a chance to work it out before all is revealed.
The narrator talks to the reader on numerous occasions which I found both hilarious and enjoyable. It reminded me of the old “Choose your own adventure” novels I had as a kid. Like I have already said, this is a very unique book.
Of course there are some not so unusual things. The family reunion of the Cunningham family is held at a ski resort in terrible weather, there are long held resentments and grievances among them as well.
I can’t say much more so as not to give anything away, but thrilling events ensue. Love, love, loved this book! This would make a wonderful thriller movie. 10/10.
So it’s my own fault for reading this straight after a quality mystery by Richard Osman. This book is laborious and 100 pages too long. The story line is ridiculously stretched out, and the overly chatty style did quickly make me want to throw the book at a wall – as the author himself admits it might.
The last 80 pages are so desperately overflowing with clues, you can’t fail to guess who done it. Which is great if you usually don’t work out the mystery. Australian books are often off-putting to fans of the classic Christie-era mysteries, as they lack the class, romance and evocative setting of the Golden Age.
If like me you were forced to read terrible Australian novels at school (and therefore have a natural aversion to Australian authors), Everyone in my family has killed someone is a good way to dip your toes back in the water.
An easy holiday or weekend read, especially if you haven’t picked up a good book in a while.
I used to read anything before kids. Since kids I don’t have the time so have found I will start a book and if it isn’t brilliant I lose interest and never finish it. Not the case with this book!! The title sucked me in.
I knew nothing about the book or author prior. I read the whole book in 2 days around driving 600km to get a kid to hospital, school, work and all my other commitments. I lent it to a friend who also inhaled it.
I’ve now gone on to purchase all the authors work from Booktopia.

Family shows you how to build a repertoire of crowd-pleasing, flavour-bursting vegetarian main meals – a modern guide to successfully eating green, together.

My Family and Other Animals is the bewitching account of a rare and magical childhood on the island of Corfu by treasured British conservationist Gerald Durrell. This tv tie in edition coincides with ITV’s six part television series The Durrells.
Escaping the ills of the British climate, the Durrell family – acne-ridden Margo, gun-toting Leslie, bookworm Lawrence and budding naturalist Gerry, along with their long-suffering mother and Roger the dog – take off for the island of Corfu.
But the Durrells find that, reluctantly, they must share their various villas with a menagerie of local fauna – among them scorpions, geckos, toads, bats and butterflies. Recounted with immense humour and charm My Family and Other Animals is a wonderful account of a rare, magical childhood.
