Portable AM/FM radios with CD players are small, self-contained units that can be easily carried with you and used to play CDs and receive radio broadcasts. They are typically powered by batteries, making them ideal for use when travelling or during power outages.
Some models also include features such as USB connectivity, allowing you to play music from your MP3 player or other digital device, and auxiliary inputs, which let you connect external audio sources such as a portable DVD player.
13 Best Portable Am/Fm Radio With Cd Player
1. Jensen Portable Stereo CD Player with Am/fm Stereo Radio, Red
The JENSEN CD-490 is a stylish, compact, and portable CD player with AM/FM stereo radio. The unit features a top loading CD player which is CD-R/RW compatible, programmable memory, and a bright red LED display with function indicators.
This music system also offers both headphones and auxiliary input jacks for playing your favorite music from your iPod, MP3 and other digital media players. The carrying handle lets you take the CD-490 anywhere.
It operates on 120-Volt AC power or 6 C-cell batteries (not included).
Dislikes: There is NOT an on and off button. To turn it on or off you have to find a 3 way select button, on the side, awful operation. CD door very flimsy, opens by itself Turning knob is loose, not precise at all.
The radio dial is in an odd lateral position, very hard to set or to see the station. AC power cable connection was loose, would only word while manually pushing it and holding it. My only likes are the colour, the appearance and the price.
I returned the unit without further testing, I was disappointed enough. Looking for something better.
I’M SO GLAD THIS SMALL PLAYER HAS THE EARPHONE JACKS IN THE FRONT CENTER. NOW AT NIGHT IT’S HARD TO FIND THE CONTROL BUTTONS/SWITCHES BUT FOR THIS PRICE I GOT EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED. USE A GOOD SET OR BRAND OF HEADPHONES OR WITHOUT YOU GET A BALANCE OF BASS SOUND AND TREBLE AND I DID NOT BUY MINE FOR OUTDOOR USE BUT BUY 8 “C” SIZE BATTERIES FOR POWER OUTAGES AND DC USAGE.
It is not a ghettoblaster. If you’re looking for full spectrum sound with rounded mids, highs and lows, this is not the box for you, but if you need a good quality, portable radio with decent sound, then by all means, get one of these.
The material seems durable, except for the handle, which is a bit flimsy and excessive transporting of it via the handle will result I it breaking off eventually. The antenna is the tough old school type that you would find on radios back in the day.
It has an analog tuner, so there’s no preset station feature. Nevertheless the tuner is strong. It picks up signals very well. I haven’t tried the CD deck or the headphone jack yet, but the AUX in jack worked great with my cellphone.
I have some heavy reggae music on my PC and I copied a few of them to my phone and played them through the radio and I was impressed with the output. It was loud and vibrant. Totally different from the sound I get from playing a radio station.
Still, it’s nothing near what I get from playing music on my computer, but for the size the music from my phone resonated well through it. My computer is hooked up to a 5000 watt amp, mixer and two speaker boxes, each with dual 18″ woofers, a 17″ midrange and five 3 1/2″ tweeters.
The sound I get from my setup I don’t expect from this radio, but the output quality is excellent for what it is. It uses eight c batteries, not six as stated in the description. That should be corrected because it is misleading.
The Jensen CD-490 is a nice little boombox. And it *is* pretty small, closer to the size of a large clock radio than a regular boombox. But for its size, it really cranks out some pretty good sound. Though you probably won’t be confusing it for a Bose or a Bang & Olufsen.
It has pretty good midrange sound with just enough bass, and it blasts fairly loudly. It’s attractively designed. I docked it 1 star because it has an analog radio tuner, not digital. But the tuner seems to pull in local stations very clearly, even without extending the antenna.
I played a couple of CDs on it when I first got it, and so far so good. It does take 8 “C” batteries to operate cordlessly, not the 6 that some other reviewers have noted. And they seemed to have fixed the issue with the AC power cord, as the one which was included with mine fit tightly into the back of the unit.
I just hope it holds up! (reposted since earlier review failed to appear).
The radio plays great and it appeared to be new, but the cd player has a tiny popping sound like a record play makes and the louder you turn up the volume, the louder the popping sound gets over the music.
This player is sold at a lower price point than a brand new one that cost $50+. There was no mention of any problems with this CD player in the description. Beware.
Not laud enough I bought this unit to listen to audio CDs in my garage while I work on my auto and motorcycle projects. The only way I can hear the sound clearly, if its right next to me. I have had at least a half dozen various brands of CD players and they all have sat on my work bench on the far side of my garage and I have been able to hear them with no trouble, no matter where Im at.
With other units I can even work outside in the car port and hear them. It’s nice looking and compact but the volume is very wanting.
This player is working perfectly. I bought the correct 3. 5mm Male to Male jack Audio Stereo adaptor cable with 3 insulators and 4 connection rings at each end to fit my Samsung Iphone Mini. I have been playing all the different ways of music thru the player and each one is perfect.
I like it and recommend this radio. The green color gets attention. Pretty cool looking.
The player/radio is compact. Light weight without the batteries installed. I haven’t installed those yet. It requires 6 C Cell batteries. AC function works fine. Sound quality is OK, I can’t attest to the durability.
I haven’t owned it long enough. I gave it a yes because I couldn’t post this review with out a yes or no answer. Radio works OK and would suffice for a power outage. It does lack a tuning display indicator for the radio so you need to wait for station ID.
Great value for the price. I give the device a star rating of 4 out of 5.
If you are looking for something compact with great sound and radio reception, this is the CD player for you! My other player (the one I replaced with this one) would only pick up one of my favorite radio stations and this one picks up 3! I’m very rural so this was a big surprise.
This new player is compact and fits ideally in the corner of my small kitchen between my convection oven, can opener, knife sharpener and toaster. Sound is excellent, Katy Perry and Jason Aldean have been rocking my house since it arrived yesterday! lol! >.
I would of given this portable CD/AM/FM Radio a 5 star but it was somewhat disappointing that it is hard to get stations clearly. The dial is so small and hard to see but sound is muffled on a lot of it as it’s hard to tune to.
CD player works great. nice Stereo sound. very compact and portable. Love the red color. Definitely keeping it.

I bought this CD player because it’s portable, nice share and color. However, I discovered that it does have a small background noise and you need to unplug before sleeping. The backgroung noise is more noticable if the CD is not of great quality.
But since I have many original CDs of great quality the sound is wonderful. So, it’s a keeper!.
I am thrilled with my MP3/cd player! I listen to audiobooks that occasionally come in MP3 format. Some players don’t play these. When I saw this one, and for a reasonable price, I didn’t hesitate. The sound is quite good for a small portable player.
Just so you understand what I’m basing it against, I use Klipsitch speakers on a Sony MP3 device with stand alone subwoofer! So, to me the sound is much better than some of the others I’ve heard! It’s cute, and dials, buttons and outlets are clearly marked and easily accessible.
For the money, you’d have a hard time getting anything else as good as this player. Thanks, Naxa! Good job!.
The instructions indicate that the CD/MP3 component can be programmed to play certain songs, etc. However, the instructions are very vague are how to accomplish this and what instructions are given don’t let the device do this.
What pops up on the display while trying to program it is not at all what the instructions say. I bought it for this specific purpose and am very disappointed. Radio seems to work well but product is very cheaply made for the price.
Buttons on the device don’t work half the time. Wondering how long it will last.

With the stereo you’ll have old school and current audio playback options, and the satisfaction of having made a budget-conscious choice.
Overall the unit is well designed with one minor discrepancy. When used as a radio, the volume and tuner controls are located at the sides of the case. This was found to be somewhat problematic due to the sensitivity of the rotary tuner and positioning it to achieve maximum sound clarity.
For CD use the unit is compact, light, reasonably priced with relatively good sound quality.

I bought this for my father. He loves music but needs something simple. He didn’t need it hooked into any other equipment – just wanted a small, stand-alone unit to play cd’s. So far, he seems very happy with this device.
Note: The radio reception is not very good where they live. The have great reception on their other receivers in the living room and office but this small player has little reception. I primarily bought it for the cd player so it’s not that big a deal.
Radio dial very sensitive. Gave up trying to receive a station. Only purchased to play CDs anyway. The sound is very good when playing a CD. Would cost more to return than it was worth. I will enjoy CDs.

It impresses with its functionality and robustness. A little sound miracle everywhere you are. The SCD-24 is available in a variety of color combinations. With its compact dimensions, the SCD-24 is easy to take anywhere.
It is light but powerful and makes every favourite song sound wonderful. 6 x C (UM-2) batteries not included.
Although the controls are easily used by people with low vision, unfortunately it is not easy to read the digital panel, so impossible to tell at which point the cd has been stopped. We would appreciate controls which allowed the user to stop at a certain point and begin at that same point once again later.
Bought for our son as part of his birthday. Great quality sound and it looks in place and eyecatching in a youngster’s room. It is very neat and compact. Read the reviews first which prompted us to buy it and we are not disappointed.

The cd player is also a great feature, allowing you to listen to your favorite CDs while on the go. The only downside to this product is the price, but overall it is a great product and would recommend it to anyone.
