20 Best Limited Ingredient Wet Cat Food
1. Nature’s Variety Instinct Limited Ingredient Cat Food, Turkey – 12 cans, 5.5 oz each
Instinct fulfills your pet’s instinctive nutritional needs with 100% grain-free and gluten-free nutrition, resulting in vibrant health you can see. After all, your pet’s instinctive nature is to eat more meat, poultry or fish protein and less grain.
Instinct is also highly digestible and nutritionally dense. Perfect for satisfying your pet’s carnivorous cravings and nutritional needs. For pets with sensitive stomachs caused by food allergies or intolerances, less is more.
These products are made with only pure, simple, essential ingredients that have been carefully chosen for their nutritional value and high digestibility. Fewer ingredients make it easy to manage what your pet eats or doesn’t eat every day.
One single sourced animal protein. Made with easily digestible ingredients.
I have bought Instinct wet food for my cat for 5+ years now because it has been consistently ranked for high quality. One of their quality claims was that the food was made in the US and that all of their meat (at least for poultry and a few other products) came from the US.
This was also the reason their price was higher than some brands: you were paying for US-made quality and meat. The cans left over from my last autoship (chicken, rabbit, lamb, venison) all have a US flag and a “Made in the USA with the finest ingredients from around the world” statement on them (news to me that the ingredients were no longer consistently from the US), but my recent shipment of chicken no longer has the flag/statement and the can instead says “Product of Thailand.
” The cans look different and the recipe has definitely changed: no more chunks of carrot and whole peas, much more gelatinous, smells different. I just opened the first can this morning and my cat has eaten what I gave him, so he has no complaints so far.
My complaint is not against cat food from Thailand, but that Instinct makes such a huge point about their food being sourced and made in the US. That’s supposedly one of the reasons why the food costs more money than other brands, because they have more control over the quality and origins.
So if that’s not true anymore, why does the food cost so much?.
I have 5 cats. One, Buddy, has allergies and the vet suggested buying him “Cleaner” food with exotic proteins. Instinct fits the bill for a cleaner food. It is made with 95% rabbit and pork liver. I don’t know how much of that 95 % is rabbit or pork liver, but to me that seemed pretty clean.
I am unsure about the need for cats to have 5% vegetables, fruits and other wholesome ingredients but it is a low enough number that I don’t care. It fits the bill for an exotic protein and I know that at least one of my cats, Kenny, likes rabbit, because, unfortunately, he has caught them and devoured it,.
So I had high hopes for the cats liking this. And at the first meal I served them, they ate half the portion that I gave them. I thought that was fine because maybe it is a more caloric dense food than what they usually receive.
Then, a few days later, I gave them some more and they refused to eat it. All of the, not just the fussy ones. I have two eat-whatever on the plate cats and even they refused it. So I will not be buying again,.
I have read a couple of reviews about Montmorillonite Clay. It is not the type of clay that some people think it is. It is a living clay that is very beneficial to cats. Montmorillonite benefits In general, Montmorillonite clay in cat food or any human food has positive effects.
According to a health study, the proper living clay intake for diet enables users to prevent common illnesses by 50% on average. For instance, Living clay in human food products helps to improve the digestive system’s health.
It boosts immunity which protects the human body from infections. Moreover, the Calcium Montmorillonite presence will wipe out heavy metals as well as toxin from the body. Checking whether there is Montmorillonite clay in cat food should be the first priority whenever you go shopping for your little feline friends.
Nowadays, it is not a strange story to hear about a wide range of increases in cat health problems. Unfortunately, these troubles come from environmental pollution. These bad things all can cause cats to undergo problems in relation to allergies, kidney, diabetes and urinary disorders.
Researches point out that thanks to the Montmorillonite clay, the cat body can get rid of toxins. When ingested, the clay sticks to toxins in a natural way. Then it pushes them out of the cat body through the colon.
Most of the manufacturers of pet food add the Montmorillonite to their products with two main purposes. One is to keep the food dry, prevent moisture. Two is to build good health for cats. It makes the immune system better and bear benefits, for instance, the clay strengthens the connection between bones and joints of cats.
Despite bringing benefits for the health of feline friends, the Montmorillonite clay in cat food still gets negative comments from pet parents. Many of them keep wondering how cats can digest clays, actually unbelievable.
Surely, this Living clay has been appreciated by vets with the purpose of keeping a healthy cat. However, you need to take advantage of it in an adequate amount daily. So in short Montmorillonite is a very good and beneficial ingredient in your cat food to promote good internal health.
I specifically looked for a cat food for a long time that contained Montmorillonite Clay and found this Instinct Pate. My cats love it!.

I am a fan of Purina as a company and always welcome samples to try new things. Not only do they have great customer service, their products are high quality, and made in the USA as well. My pets eat “Purina one true instinct” and we were unfamiliar with the grain free, beyond products.
The second I opened the can though, my feline friend came running. He just KNEW what was about to go down. Again, we don’t eat wet food often but I like it as a supplement to the dry. Having previously known my cat liked the “gravy” wet foods, I wasn’t surprised to find that this one was not as loved as the others, being a pate.
He was eager to eat it but struggled I think. He ate about a third the first sitting, and came back at least two more times before it was gone. He was back in the kitchen every morning looking for more! I would not consider purchasing this again since he likes others better and based on price.
My favorite features of this particular brand are that the cans are recyclable and the food contains pre/probiotic fiber, something often neglected in other foods. #Sponsored I received this product for free for the purpose of my review.
“I received this product for free for the purpose of my review. All opinions are my own. ” My 2 cats really enjoyed Purina Beyond Grain-Free Trout & Catfish Pate Recipe Canned Cat Food. The #1 ingredient is trout.
I put the cat food a plate for 2 cats and I was afraid that they wouldn’t wanna share but they did. They both gobbled it up and they were licking their lips wanting more. They love the flavor of trout.
The high-protein wet cat food pate is made with absolutely no poultry by-product meal and no corn, wheat or soy to meet your high standards for your furry pal. The cat food has no artificial colors, flavors or preservatives go into this natural wet cat food which is loaded with added vitamins, minerals and nutrients to help support your kitty from nose to tail.
I love treating my cat with wet cat food. So I thought I’d try Beyond Grain Free Trout & Catfish Recipe Pate Wet Cat Food. I really like that this cat food has natural prebiotic fiber and that it is grain free.
The cans can be easily opened with their “pop-top”. The cat food is fairly easy to get out of the can to put on a plate or bowl especially for a meal that is of pate consistancy. The cat food looks and smells alright.
My cat seemed happy to try out the cat food. However, she doesn’t have a huge appetite so it took her about three sittings for her to finish off the can. Feeding my cat Beyond Grain Free Trout & Catfish Recipe Pate Wet Cat Food was a treat that I’m sure she’ll love to receive again.
I received this product for free for the purpose of my review. All opinions are my own. #Sponsored.

Didn’t know what to buy my finicky cats anymore, so I turned to Chewy Customer Service and they suggested this. I am happy to report my cats eat it! This is a high quality food with a restricted number of ingredients which lessen potential allergens, just what I was looking for.
It has a nice soft consistency which my cats like. The one thing I don’t like is the packaging, there is way too much plastic for a little bit of food. The tubs are divided in half, nearly doubling the amount of plastic = unnecessary.
Since I am too consciences about my plastic foot print I can’t buy this on a regular basis. Will only get it for a treat once in a while and hope Nutro will come up with different packaging like 3. 5 oz without divider please.
After a stray cat adopted me ( and I did the work trying to find his owner before I officially adopted him ) I knew I was going to have to find a different kind of cat food outside of my trusty Fancy Feast for my other cat.
Lil Boy was from the streets. He had that mentality to survive. He has a crooked tail, scars all over, missing teeth, and walked with a swagger. but he is happy. One thing I noticed is that this baby had chronic diarrhea.
I tried multiple kinds of cat food until I found NUTRO pate. If I smashed the little pate’s with a spoon, I could get it creamy enough for Lil Boy to eat because he needed something soft because of his missing teeth.
However, I also noticed that his diarrhea was becoming less and less. He prefers this food over anything else.
My senior cat was starting to have problems keeping her food down and not wanting to eat. I tried many different foods to try to tempt her but she either would not even try them or she would throw them up almost right away.
I was getting worried as she kept losing weight. Then I read that cats can be allergic to grains so decided to give this food a try. She loves it! I get both the moist and the dry food and she will eat them both.
She is back to yelling at me for not putting her plate down fast enough. I am so happy about that and the food is not as expensive as some of the fancier foods I tried. Will continue to buy.

I have a tiny 7 lb 10 yr old rescue Bengal Cat who was brought into the shelter by the owner half bald and starved (from what the Foster Mom told me) turned out to be a severe allergy to Chicken (causing diarrhea pand runny eyes) and other health issues.
It took 6 months in Foster Care for her fur to grow back in enough to cover the pink & recognize her as a spotted Bengal, and many (most?) of her teeth were reabsorbed or pulled by the vet. Her tail is bonier than my finger and looks like a long bee stinger.
But other than that, she is a totally little cuddlebug that melts into my arms when picked up, loves to explore & play, and is VERY fiesty. She needed a very clean and healthy diet to rebuild her immune system, muscles, fur, and liver function.
Almost all Cat foods, even Seafood flavors, have some form of Chicken as their 3rd ingredient, and a ton of cheap starchy fillers. A wild cat’s diet is only 2% carbs (mostly from whatever is in Mouse guts) and high carb food just feeds all sorts of feline diseases, so I minimze feeding cat chow.
Problem is she LOVES chicken and human food, and finding a flavorful and healthy Chicken-less high protein cat food she would consistantly eat has been difficult. She would scarf down a new food 2 days, and as soon as I bought a case, she wouldnt touch it.
She also then would not eat whatever previously liked food I mixed into it. Most of these foods were $2-$3 for a little 3 to 5. 5 oz can, and she was either eating 2 or 3 per day or it was ending up down the disposal if my other spotted cat also wouldn’t eat it.
The Wellness is liked by both cats, healthy, Chicken-less, and only $3 for a 12 oz can. One reviewer said she found nematodes in the food. 4 out 5 animals on earth are Nematode worms, and a handful of soil has thousands (so raw vegans probably eat millions).
There are 20,000 different nematodes, and many (most?) are less than a. in size. So is it a concern? Only if it is live roundworms, but no one has found those in canned food. As for the people comparing Wellness to Friskies (or even Purina), and ignorant of the cheap ‘filler’ ingredients plus ‘meat by-products’ (scrapings off the slaughterhouse floor) will only result in high vet bills for years in the end when the kidneys start to fail, stones build up, cancerous growths need surgery, and/or diabetes sets in.
Being an ‘Active Senior’ and hating going to the doctors for aches & pains myself (and always a ton of blood tests since Docs have forgotten how to do clinical diagnosis) only to find out it has no cure in Western Medicine, I want to make sure my cats are healthy and remain Active Seniors, too.
Vetinary is actually more advanced than human medicine, since researchers could kill and open up their sick test subjects. A farmer would not want to spend $500 in vet bills on a $200 pork-pig, so cures had to be inexpensive and effective.
The farmer would also have their Vet sacrifice a sick pig and have it examined up close to save the herd from an illness. Pediatricians can’t do that. So bottom line: Learn about nutrition & health, & feed your cats high quality foods like Wellness, even if it is not something you would personally find appealling.
You can experiment on your animals, too. See how a nutritious organic near-natural diet compares to chow (cereal based) or prescription diet full of GMO grains full of gluten & RoundUp. Then see how little things like cutting out dairy (a hormone-filled baby cow food, designed to quickly create big cows) improves your own health.
Wellness is an excellent company, food made in the USA, high-quality ingredients. It is one of the brands I have been serving my cats for many years. I bought Core, Signature, Pate, Gravies in various flavors, formulations.
2 yrs ago my current cats decided they no longer like pate. I switched to gravies. I only serve premium cat food, it’s very important especially if you’re looking for “gravy” in food. The gravies chicken is small bits, the minced variety is even smaller it has less gravy but is till moist, tender.
I don’t see any vegetables as other reviewers stated. I buy either version. When I placed my last order Chewy was out-of-stock on 3oz gravies so I bought the minced. I don’t leave food out over night.
I’ve been ordering this brand of canned food for a long while. But for the last few months, increasingly I’ve noticed a weird chemical smell to the food and not just this flavor, either. My cats are both starting to give me a hard time about eating this food anymore, no matter what the flavor.
Sometimes they just refuse to eat it entirely. What is this company putting in the food?!?! Also for canned food that’s supposed to have moisture in it, I always have to add water to it for my cats. The whole point of having wet food is so they get more moisture in their diet, right? So chemical smell plus not-very-wet canned food means I’m going to have to switch brands.
But what other brand to switch to? This food is expensive and it’s supposed to be high quality. But what good is it if it makes my cats repulsed (and me too) from the smell?.

Our recipes keep it simple with a single source of animal protein and easily digestible carbohydrates, without grains, corn or gluten ingredients.
I hate to leave a negative review. That said, this is for the product and not at all a criticism of Chewy. I love Chewy! I used this particular item for a couple of years for both cats because it helped with digestive issues they were having.
Now, one cat is on a special Rx diet for kidney health and the other cat, who used to LOVE this flavor and texture food, eats a few morsels and walks away. She will not have anything to do with this food anymore.
I just gave a couple of cans from this last case to a friend to see if her cats would eat it. Both of her indoor females wouldn’t eat it and neither would a male stray in the barn. Hmmm. It seems the more recent cases of this food are different from the ones before.
I don’t even feel good about giving the remaining cans to a shelter for fear something might actually be wrong with it. Too bad it went from a favorite to one to avoid.
My senior cat has stomach and allergy sensitivities as well as feline asthma. It’s been a battle finding her the best limited ingredient diet that works for her. She immediately loved this food! The consistency is perfect for her, because she doesn’t have a lot of teeth.
Her bowel movements have been better and much more consistent, she’s stopped itching and licking as much and she doesn’t get sick anymore after eating. I’ve been with my cat for almost 12 years and this food has really helped her.
I will definitely continue to buy this for her as long as the formula stays the same. I appreciate this formula not having chicken, fish or by products of any kind. It’s been a godsend.
As another reviewer states–there is something wrong with the lot of this tuna that has a 12/2022 use by date. We have received numerous cases, one from fro Petco, from the lot with this use by date.
The tuna is brown instead of the pink color it always has been and the smell is horrific. It also has a different texture. My cat who loved this food will not go near it now. I let Merrick know about this and did send them pictures and provided the lot #’s and was told that my numerous cases are all from the same lot.
Unfortunately, I cannot find any cases from a different lot #/use by date. believe me I have tried. Petco if you have a case of this tuna with a different use by date–please reply. We’ll try it.

Please keep in mind that this is a “complementary” cat food. That means it’s intended to be a treat. It should not be the main source of nutrition for your cat. Complementary foods do not meet all the nutritional requirements of a dog or cat in a single meal because they have no supplements added.
Food with supplements added are called COMPLETE foods. Be sure you are feeding complete foods on a regular basis! Recommended with reservations: do not feed exclusively!.
My oldest cat Sam, is now 13. He has renal kidney disease for several years. He broke out in a horrible rash and scratching and the vet said he is allergic to chicken. Well, chicken is in almost every cat food no matter “type”.
I was overjoyed to find Reveal wet food and he lapped it up! I love that this is a limited ingredient food, and I also give him Instinct limited ingredient dry food.
I only feed my cat wet food (as dry food is seriously bad for any cat’s health) and I’m always experimenting with new foods for her to try. Well, here’s one she loves. Not only does it look and smell like yummy chicken, the bits of meat are in a tasty broth, which provides good hydration for cats.
Very very happy to discovered this brand, and I will definitely be buying again.

Cats love mixing it up. They will naturally select a combination of canned and dry food. Both are healthy, tasty options for your kitten, adult or senior cat. Canned cat foods are great for kittens with new baby teeth or adult cats with painful dental disease.
Canned cat foods have a stronger aroma making them appealing to cats with reduced sense of smell, such as seniors or finicky adults. Dick Van Patten’s Natural Balance? Venison & Green Pea Canned Formula adheres to our special grain-free diet, providing high quality nutrition for your cat.
Our formula contains a limited number of protein and carbohydrate sources.
Feeding Instructions: Adult Cats: Feed 2 cans daily per 8 lbs. of body weight. Pregnant Queens: Feed 2.5 cans daily per 8 lbs. of body weight. Lactating Queens: Feed 6 cans daily per 8 lbs. of body weight. Kittens: Feed free choice, or 3 times a day as much as they want. Refrigerate after opening. Fresh water should be available at all times.
1. 5 year old cat had sporadic diarrhea, vet suggested a LID without chicken, this fit the bill and the budget. No more diarrhea! Cat loves both the canned and dry versions. Can’t get this variety locally so ordering is required.
Petco pricing is the best on the internet and LOVE the repeat delivery discount and ease of having the food just show up. Only complaint about the food is that they changed the ingredients from having venison liver as the second ingredient, the cats went ga-ga for the old variety with the liver.
Our senior cat (16 years old) has had a digestive problem for many years with very soft stools with some blood. The vet did thorough exams, tried medications and we were able to stabilize him for several years.
Then he began to lose weight. The vet checked for any new issues and found none. After reading online comments we tried switching to the Venison and Green Pea Formula canned limited ingredient diet. His stool became a little too hard so we added in some Chicken and Green Pea with the Venison (about half and half).
His stool is now normal almost every day. We continue to give him Budesinide prescription every other day. He has gained weight and is stable and doing very well. We are very pleased.
Recent shipments of this canned wet food looked and smelled very different from previous cans we have had. Contacted the mfr VI’s their web chat and was asked to email info from bottom of cans. I emailed it and they replied and asked me to call them.
Should it take a chat, email AND a call? I don’t have time for it. They said that since they use fresh ingredients the batches vary. But the appearance hadn’t varied at all in the six months previous.
Cat used to scarf it down and beg for more. That stopped with the first can of the weird looking shipment. She won’t touch it.
Designed with a limited number of premium protein and carbohydrate sources, this grain-free cat food is an excellent choice when seeking alternative ingredients for your cat. Our Limited Ingredient Diets duck and green pea is designed to support healthy digestion and to maintain skin and coat health all while providing complete, balanced nutrition for adult cats.
My cat is now 13 and was having some digestive issues and started having diarrhea accidents. I switched her to this brand of limited ingredient cat food and her issues began resolving immediately. She also never liked pate style food before, but loves this! She normally can only eat a small amount at each setting, but with this, she gobbles down a half of a can easily.
We bought the duck and also the chicken with green pea. She likes both.
Bought this for one of my cats per vet recommendation because we have come to the conclusion that he has food allergies. I have four cats so decided to give all my cats the canned and dry version. I have been buying the dry version which everyone likes for about a month now.
So when I ordered the canned I bought a case as I thought even if one cat doesn’t like it one of mt cats will. WRONG! Out of four cats not one of them likes this canned food! I open a can of Friskies and one of the duck and pea at each feeding which is twice a day.
They barely touch it and eat all the Friskies brand. Very disappointed in this food. Another thing, it is very sticky, sticks to the spoon and in the can and in the food bowls. Will not be buying this again as I completely struck out with all four of my cats.
One thing I did like about the food is that it doesn’t have a strong odor. Now if they had only eaten it!.
I have a food allergic cat. He scratches, loses fur and breaks out in welps and scratches sores all over his body. First time in my long cat history life I have had to deal with this and it has been a real chore to find a food he can tolerate AND that I can afford to feed him and my other three household cats.
Now the Duck and Green Pea DRY food seems to fit the bill. I then seached high and low for a wet can food for him since I don’t want to run into urinary health problems down the road. Why did my cat respond well to the dry formula but not this wet formula? Because they have added extra ingrediants.
Salmon and carrageenan are not in the dry formula and both are “seafoods”. I fed my cat pure salmon treats one day and the next day he had large welps all over his chin and neck. So Natural Balance, skip the “seafoods” if you truly want to make this a food for cats suffering from food allergies! Please take it out of your venison formula also!.

My cats love this food! They are on an all wet food diet. I add this to their pate wet food and they clean the plate every time. No carbs, very healthy and not gross like other wet foods. Best not to feed this exclusively as it lacks essential nutrients but it’s a great complement to my cats’ diet.

I can appreciate what this “healthier” cat food is trying to accomplish. It is grain-free and higher in protein than a lot of standard wet and dry cat foods. Over time, it should help to keep kitty strong and lean, while energized enough to prowl at night, or whatever other activities cats do.
However, my cat’s initial reaction to this food was a bit of curiosity, followed immediately by disinterest. I plated one portion (half of the separated container) and left it in a shape that kitty could nibble at or lick.
She did neither. The next day, I fed her about 1/3 of the other half of the container; this time, I mashed it up with a fork first. She enjoyed it more this time, enough to eat it all and lick the plate clean.
So, I plated the other two thirds of the serving (one third at a time) and she ate them until full (about half way through the final third of the full serving; she finished the last few bits after a short nap).
My observation is just that my kitty doesn’t like the flavor and smell of liver as much as other flavors like seafood. But you never know what you like until you try it!.
Nutro – Chicken, Liver & Shrimp Recipe Paté is something so different for cat food. I have a geriatric tomcat who has recently been brought inside after a life of outdoor tomcatting. He’s too old to continue living outside so I try to spoil him as much as possible.
He always has access to water and dry food but comes and asks for his meal of Nutro. I love that it’s a flavor he eats ALL OF. I like that it’s portioned properly and the packaging waste is minimal and recyclable.
It is very easy to open and my tomcat has bad teeth so it’s easy for him to chew in it’s paté form. He prefers a paté. When I give him the other kinds he just licks off the gravy and leaves the chipped meat behind.
I know he loves Nutro by his incessant meowing at dinner time. He loves it’s taste and I love it’s packaging and value. I really like the split container and the foil lid.
As soon as I opened the tin foil lid my cats started meowing around my feet. My dog even refused to eat her dog food because this stuff smelled so good she was a bit jealous. The cat food smelled like turkey and to me smelt better than most turkey I’ve eaten.
The 2 pouches are a little snack for my two cats to share with their cat kibble. Each cat got a spoonful to add to their daily kibble and they both loved it and had no digestion problems. It is great that I don’t have to put an opened can of stinky cat food in my refrigerator since my cats don’t eat much, it was a great portion size for 2 small cats in each side.
Our cats loved it and our dog got to finish off what little bit of turkey paté flavor that was left in their bowls. Great wet cat food for my picky cats.

Our little three-year old torbie comes running when she knows a meal is coming, usually taking her cues from our orange tabby’s vocalizations. When she gets a chance to smell an open can, her normal quiet disposition changes, and she starts to mew loudly until her food is set before her.
She loves all types of food and we do not skimp on brands and ingredients when it comes to both our cat’s care. That is why we chose the Hound & Gatos brand. We like that it is made in the US and we like supporting family-owned nd operated businesses.
We have only tried the Duck & Liver flavor, so I am excited to try some of the other flavors. But, I have no doubt, our little one will love them all.
Ok, I have 3 Cats. I split this can between the 3 if them. 2 of the 3 really enjoyed it. Cat #1 Will eat just about anything can get ahold of. She ate all of her portion. Cat #2 is slightly picky and after sniffing it for 2 minutes decided he likes it and ate most of his (he came back later for it) so I’d say he likes it.
Then there is my 3rd Cat. He is a Large Cat, 20 lbs. You would look at him and think” well that cat must be spoiled with all sorts of treats”. No, This Cat is the pickiest dang eater. I have tried all sorts of different things and he will sniff it, look at you like you betrayed him and walk over to the corner where he proceeds to sit there and stare into your soul until you give him his friskies treats.
As everyone knows, cats can be so picky. You buy some food they eat it and then when you buy more than one can, the next thing you know, they turn their nose. Not so with this food. Hound and Gatos Grain Free, Chicken Liver Wet Cat Food has become more boys favorite.
Not only did he basically inhale the cat but he actually at 2 more cans that I bought. My boy is a bengal and he MUST have wet cat food to keep up his hydration. some wet cat food is mostly water but this has the perfect ratio of food to liquid.
He also loved the taste and since he is allergic to fish we find it challenging to find cat food he likes.
Some cats and even kittens may be highly sensitive to commonly used proteins carbohydrates and food additives in their diet. Sensitivity reactions can lead to irritable bowel upset stomach and a number of skin problems.
Feeding Instructions: Adult Cats: Feed one 5.5 oz. can daily per 8 lbs of body weight. Note: Feeding amounts are intended as guidelines only. The food intake should be adjusted according to the age, weight and activity of your cat. Refrigerate after opening. Fresh water should be available at all times.
I have a cat who is extremely fussy about wet food, and has rejected more than half the brands/flavors I tried with him. And that was just with regular cat food – when our vet said he needed to go on a special food I was dreading trying to get him to eat it.
I got a few cans of this to try from a nearby store, and to my surprise he showed enthusiasm, ate more than two thirds of his dinner (which was half a 5. 5 oz can), and went back twice more this evening to keep working on his leftovers and eventually to ask for more! This is a very smooth, wet, loose pate.
It needs to be scooped out of the can, it does not come out of the can in one big hockey puck like some brands. But when you scoop out pieces they do hold their shape, they are not runny like apple sauce or something.
I think the texture of the pate might be what made it so appealing to him. I have now ordered a 24-pack from Chewy – this stuff is awesome!! (And my human nose finds the smell a bit tempting too – I can see why he likes it!).
My cat usually eats Royal Canin’s duck or rabbit formula vet diet b/c it is a single protein, limited ingredient formula and she has some food/environmental allergies/sensitivities. RC has been out of stock, of both of those, for a long while now, so I had to search for something similar as replacement.
This has a similar (limited) ingredient list as RC’s duck and green pea formula, with no additional chicken or fish or corn or anything added. It was tricky to find something comparable and okay for my cat, so I’m really glad I found this.
She loves it. The only thing is I think it might have more salt than RC’s, but if you are searching for something in a pinch that doesn’t need a vet Rx, but is comparable to the limited-ingredient vet Rx diets, try this.
My kitty has happily been on the Royal Canin limited ingredients (PR, PV and PD) diet for years because of skin allergy problems. However, due to supply chain issues, the RC food has been out of stock for months and I was freaking out trying to find a good substitute.
I tried another brand and right away he started itching under his chin and getting scabs on his ears. So after more additional research and carefully comparing lists of ingredients to the RC brand I settled on this Natural Balance limited ingredient diet.
I am happy to report it is a winner!!! No more itching or scabs and he loves the taste! I am so relieved to have found this option. Best of all–it’s less expensive and doesn’t need vet approval. I may never go back!.
Instinct Limited Ingredient Diet Real Rabbit Recipe in Savory Gravy is intended for intermittent or supplemental feeding only. This is a complementary food and should be fed along with a complete and balanced diet.
My 17-year-old tabby, Tiger, began having severe stomach issues several months ago. He vomited every day, sometimes as many as 5 times a day! My vet determined it was Inflammatory Bowel Disease, but the steroid injections & treatments did nothing to help with my old boy’s vomiting.
He was put on a prescription diet with probiotics, but he still vomited daily and acted lethargic and fatigued. I decided to try this food because my vet said Tiger could have a chicken allergy. Practically all cat food has some form of chicken! This one did not.
It took a good two weeks to see improvement once he began eating this rabbit-based food. But, eventually, his vomiting ceased and his happy, sassy attitude has returned! I’m baffled by the reviews that are so concerned with the black color of the kibbles! Tiger eats it and it keeps him healthy & happy, so nothing else really matters to me!.
I’ve only had this food for a month and I’ve noticed a HUGE difference! My 125 lb Saint was constantly getting diarrhea and waking me up through the night and now she’s pooping solid and letting me sleep!! She does get a probiotic as well but I truly believe this is a miracle food for her because she’s pooping a lot less too and getting the nutrients she needs.
I’ve gone through so many brands and finally did a food sensitivity test for her and found out she had sensitivities to soy, salmon oil, and eggs which this food does not have! I’m so happy to have found this brand because I was getting sick and tired of hosing down the yard from her diarrhea! Wanted to thank Chewy’s customer service for their help with returning another limited ingredient diet brand that I tried first and when I got the bag it said salmon oil but did not say it on their website.
They sent me a bag of Instinct right away and I’m totally hooked! Totally doing the happy dance right now and Remi is thanking me as well!.
I’m a longtime Chewy customer. I don’t know if I’ve written a review on this site yet… I may have once, but can’t remember. Needless to say, I don’t normally write reviews but I feel compelled to do so for this product.
First, I really wanted to like this food. If my three fussy cats love it, why wouldn’t I be happy with it? I had read other reviews saying that it will make your cat’s poop stink like nothing else. I thought, “gosh, how bad could it be? If they like it then I can look (or smell) past it.
” I couldn’t wait to be done with this stuff! The smell was that terrible. My husband and I decided about halfway through the bag that this food would not be purchased again. We didn’t want it to go to waste, so we stuck with it and had them finish it up.
The cats just had their last meal of this food, and my goodness! I am happy that’s done! Didn’t think I would feel this strongly about it. I am determined to find a food that’s good for them and that they all like, but this stuff just ain’t it.
I would only recommend if you have good separation of the litter box and people in your home, or if your cats go outside.
A fancy ocean blend of salmon & mackerel gives the most finicky of felines the protein and taste they demand. Contains NO grains, carrageenan, meat by-products, corn, wheat, soy or artificial preservatives, colors or flavoring.
My cat Sammy has been kind of bored of his food lately, but he really loved this flavor from this brand. He ate this one faster than most food the last few months. I also like how this food doesn’t have anything bad in it.
The brand is a little pricey, so I only got this because I got a buy one, get one deal on these.
Koha’s Limited Ingredient Diet Chicken Pate’ Recipe is perfect for felines with sensitive tummies or allergies. Single meat recipe includes New Zealand green mussel to support joint health, and pumpkin to help support digestion.
No fillers such as grains, potatoes, wheat, corn, soy or carrageenan. Easy to digest, delicious recipe your cat will love! Net wt. 3 oz. Made in Canada.
I got my cat roughly four months ago and we started her on a different dry food. A few days go by and her butt is bloody and has mucus. Over the next eight weeks she visits the vet 6 times, two times just for fluids.
Her diarrhea was explosive and got all over the room. She would leak everywhere. We tried the usual vet prescribed diets- both wet and dry to no avail. We tried regular probiotics, no progress. She’s been treated and tested for every parasite and bacteria under the sun.
All negative. In a last ditch effort I found out about Koha limited ingredient wet food. I understand diets take WEEKS to show any effects, but the morning after I gave her a can- no leaking throughout the night.
Not a spot to be seen. She’s been on this food ever since and she’s had normal, soft stool. No more diarrhea. No more leaking. No more going to the bathroom every hour. No more throwing up. The food is pricey but I’m willing to do it for her.
Bought the 5. 5oz at the store and my cats liked it. Bought a case of the 3oz as it’s easier to split between the 2 cats, and the texture is totally different. It’s mushy, gelatinous, and lighter on color.
My cats do not like this version at all but with their new allergies, the vet wanted me to switch to a limited ingredient food that do not include any chicken or salmon. Not sure why the 3oz and 5. 5oz ones would be so different.
One of our cats is very picky and will only eat chicken or rabbit and since she already tolerates Koha Limited Ingredients chicken paté, I decided to try this Rabbit one. Oh my. It is smelly and not in a good stinky fish way, has a bizarre texture, and possibly upset her stomach as well.
The 24 can box was very expensive, as rabbit products tend to be, and for this price, I expected much better. Our other two cats may be able to finish this off, but I will not be buying it again.
Give your feline friend the complete and balanced nutrition she deserves with Natural Balance L. I. D Limited Ingredient Diets High Protein Wet Food. It’s crafted with real whitefish as the only source of animal protein.
I’m Moe, a nine year old golden retriever. I recently learned I have an allergy to grains. I also have sensitive skin. The Dr. recommended this other food and treats, after telling the servants, I mean hoomans, who feed me I have food allergies, he actually wanted me to eat treats and food with grains in them! I don’t know why doctors think hoomans are stupid.
My hoomans said NO WAY to the treats and food he suggested, he even tried citing a customer reported action as an actual study to vilify my new regular food to have them buy food with grain in it! We animals know what is happening, and we tell you by scratching, rubbing, and pulling out our hair! If a Dr.
(they think that all other hoomans are dumb) says for us to eat something that makes us itch, and we stop scratching and rubbing with a different food, well, I know I like the food that doesn’t make me feel bad, and tastes like real meat, (cause it’s really meat) and we animals know when we feel better, and our hoomans know too.
If you are like me, tell your servants, I mean hoomans, to look at all the data, talk to doctors that work in food science, get a second opinion. And find out if your Dr. is getting paid for suggesting or prescribing certain foods, remember, doctors make money by having our hoomans take us into office a lot.
Some doctors don’t do that. And they call US dumb animals! I don’t scratch or pull at my muzzle anymore from food and treats. I am still treating my skin issues, but, my new food and treats give me more energy, a better coat, less itching, better tummy, and I’m more active and alert than I’ve been for a bit.
I’m a super healthy Goldie now, and my blood work proves it. Even my slight arthritis is getting better. Even though the food is a bit more expensive than my old ones, the hoomans save money by less Dr bills, and I actually eat less because I get more nutrition out of my food and treats! Five paws up from me! Also Kitty on kitty version for over 15 years and kitty’s Dr says she has great blood work and less hairball, I dunno what those are cuz dogs don’t have those, why would Dr say that this food subject to FDA study when that not true, it was a customer reported action and it shows no previous medical proof, we talked to dietician- you do it too! Food meets guidelines for USA or can’t be sold, Dr getting info from conglomerate pet food company, why not be scientific? Drs are science people right? Hoomans strange.
One of my hoomans used to work with doctors and they use this food with additional carnivore diet for kitties. Kitties live long time, even with issues! Kitties on this food (kitty version) live for average 15 and 19 years olds! I’m nine, and I feels like a puppy again, I drags hoomans around the house and haz no tummy issues, I working on other skin issues, but I look better and Iz feels better! You call Natural Balance- talk to the dietitian there, talk to other Drs too! Why one Dr say great food for allergies and another try to put on food with grain and say this food bad??? Hoomans strange, do what best for you all doggy out there! But, don’t get news from social media, get from real study, do more than twenty minutes of research if you really care about us.
If not willing to put in time, maybe you should re think having dog. We not furniture, we loving, needing animals that haz souls too! Feed good food, take good care of us. You get unconditional love, loyalty and devotion from us, why not return it? And yes, I loves dis foodz.
We got our puppy in March 2022. Started on the food and it was great, puppy transitioned off of her old food nicely, and had no digestive issues. The next bag we bought was a different shaped kibble – went from Cheerios shape to small round kibble.
Not a huge deal, because the ingredients were the same, but for our large puppy these smaller kibble pieces weren’t ideal as she could just inhale her food. The next bag we purchased was again new. The shape was even smaller, now a disc shape, and MUCH lighter yellow.
Since I wasn’t anticipating a change to the food again, I didn’t have any of the last bag of food left to mix with the new formula. Our puppy did NOT react well to this change (runny stool, light yellow, etc).
I reached out directly to the manufacturer to ask (they actually have a pretty easy to navigate chat feature on their website) as it was pretty concerning that I never got a single bag of food that was the same.
The person was pretty rude and not understanding/empathetic, but did let me know that they switched the formula from sunflower to canola oil due to sourcing issues and it’s “more shelf stable” All that to say, we ended up having to waste a 30 lb bag of food (no longer in the original bag so couldn’t return or donate) and now switched to Blue Buffalo and have had 0 issues since.
I tried this for my 7 year old male blue Doberman Pincher, he has skin sensitivities. I used to feed him Orijin Tundra grain free diet and he thrived but with the recent information about taurine deficiencies I’ve struggled to fix him a good quality dog food that is healthy.
Before this I tried Dr. Tim’s dog food. Then feeding raw but I felt like I was lost and I was concerned he wasn’t getting all the nutrients that he needed to be balanced. This was recommended to me by a pet “nutritionist” and I have to say I’m definitely unimpressed.
I gave it 8 weeks and have to say his coat looks horrible, overall he didn’t like it and I had to supplement it with broth. The quality of the kibble just isn’t there. You can tell it’s just not fresh.
Ingredients mediocre. I’m going to be trying the Zignature Lamb select cuts dog formula next. I’ve read many reviews and I love their ingredients. If you can spend the extra $30ish I would just do it.
If you are concerned I definitely recommend first talking with a vet, secondly reading reviews and information from sites that are not promoting any products. Follow me on my journey to find the best kibble! Please note that I also feed with kibble broth, fresh veggies, and either fresh goat or lamb meat.
FirstMate’s Turkey formula uses food grade, free-run Turkey. This formula is nutritionally complete but feeding with one of our dry option could be quite complementary. The formula simplicity makes this an ideal solution for cats with food allergies or stomach sensitivities.
It is carrageenan and guar gum free, BPA free and grain and gluten free.
I have 3 cats. One normal cat, one early stage CKD cat, and one cat with VERY sensitive digestion. I like this food because everyone can eat it. Don’t get me wrong, they PREFER other foods, but this is the only food that everyone will eat, no one throws up, and that’s a suitable diet.
We’ve tried all the canned flavors and turkey is the winner. One of my cats prefers the turkey and tuna but the other two like the plain old turkey the most, and the larger can size is more convenient and affordable.
We use a phosphorous binder for my CKD cat and she does well on the food. The lack of guar gum and other binders really seems to help with digestion for all 3 cats and reduces stool smell. My sensitive digestion cat is also a very fussy eater and will accept this food.
I think the high moisture and good quality protein also helps reduce “waste” that strains the kidneys. Good ratio of calcium to phosphorous. All and all this is a great cat food. In fact, I’ve tried dozens of different brands from big commercial brands like Sheba and FF Gourmet Naturals, to Blue Buffalo and Dave’s, to high end brands like Tiki Cat, Nature’s Logic, Weruva, and Instinct LID.
This is the ONLY food that works for all 3 cats. What I will say is that the recommended feeding of 1 5. 5 ounce can for an 8 lb cat just doesn’t seem to be enough – they lost too much weight. We buy the 12 ounce cans and serve 2 a day so everyone gets approximately 1 ounce per lb (all 3 of my cats are 8 pounders.
) If they lose interest in the food, we will put some limited ingredient broth or toppers. I hope they never stop making FirstMate because it is truly the only food that works for my whole cat family.
When you buy the 12 ounce cans, it ends up being more affordable than a lot of other foods. I’ve paid more for Blue Buffalo and Soulistic. If you have a cat who is constantly throwing up, then give this food a try! Or if your cats are gassy and have horrible poops, then give this food a try!.
I’ve been feeding my 15 year old cat sensitive stomach prescription food for 2. 5 years. During that time, I’ve been feeling guilty about feeding her this food as it has ingredients that cause me concern.
Her condition worsened in spite of constant veterinary care and following textbook medical protocol for IBD. (I’m not blaming the prescription food. ) The next step was exploratory surgery for biopsy.
After consulting my vet, we decided to “go off the reservation” and try 2 non-prescription foods I had researched. FirstMate was one of these foods. We’ve been feeding this Turkey formula to Cricket for a over a month and are very happy with the results.
The biopsy confirmed an IBD diagnosis so unfortunately Cricket is on steroids. However, I’m hopeful the steroids combined with a high-quality pure food will give her gut a chance to heal a bit if that’s possible.
Her constant diarrhea and bi-weekly vomiting has stopped. Her incessant hunger remains but that is part of IBD. She was constantly anxious and potentially in pain when she was having an IBD flare-up.
For the time being, all of that is no-longer present. As a result of feeding Cricket FirstMate, my cat food guilt has subsided and I no longer lose sleep over what I’m feeding my cats.
My cat has IBD. He is currently recovering from a very bad flair up, vomiting, poor appetite, some diarrhea. He was recently eating a prescription diet food (canned) from vet. Of course he was taken to the vet to rule out Pancreatitis which he also has had a couple of times over the past few years.
In my quest to find a good quality food without wheat gluten, corn, rice, peas I ran across First Mate. It is also hard to find a cat food that does not include potential irritants to an already compromised cat’s digestive track like carrageenan.
Studies seem to show some evidence of carrageenan being an inflammatory ingredient as well as Guar Gum. Then you see powdered cellulose in some form in these foods, basically a paper product, how good can that be? Well some of these products if not all sometimes are in our animal’s canned foods.
So, I had to jump start my cat by syringing him with this food B/C he really wasn’t eating hardly anything I would offer him. This morning he is eating First Mate on his own and I hope this continues as the ingredients are of good quality and I am so impressed that it does not include these potential GI irritants like Guar Gum, Powdered Cellulose and Carrageenan.
For cats who Shouldn’t eat this and can’t eat that”. Our GO! SENSITIVITIES recipes were created for pets with specific dietary needs. But all cats will love them! Antioxidants rich fruits & veggies to support immune function. Cranberries to support urinary tract health. Taurine to aid vision and heart function.
It’s rare to find a food that Both my fur babies like equally as well! But this is One of them! I’ve read the other reviews – but to me this looks Yummy, and the ingredients seem to be quite healthy.
True, not really minced- but I smoosh it up with a fork. Nice thick gravy, which I sometimes sop up a bit, as one cat is on a diet. It’s pretty low in calories, which is super nice for dieting, so I’d rather she be more satisfied in chewing her food then licking up gravy.
I’m bummed it’s been out of stock. Will certainly order more once a available!.
I’m about to place an order for a case of this food. I bought one box from a local boutique pet store to see if my boys liked it. Oh my goodness! My pickiest cat almost knocked me over to get to this food! You’d think I had let him outside and he hunted down his own squirrel! The consistency is chunky which means it’s good for tooth cleaning and filling the tummies.
I’m impressed with the ingredients and quality and will add it to the rotation. The lamb and wild boar is a hit. I’m always interested to see how they react to a novel protein like wild boar. Five stars for this food!.
My cat has food allergies, so I was hopeful she would like this as the limited ingredients were promising. Wow! She eats this immediately after I set the dish down. Furthermore, she has no allergic reaction and has even started to gain a bit of weight.
Granted it does look a bit gross, but who cares? I’m not the one eating it.
There are a few things to keep in mind when considering limited ingredient wet cat food as an option for your cat. First, limited ingredient diets are not necessarily low allergen, and some limited ingredient foods may still contain ingredients that your cat is allergic to.
Second, limited ingredient diets may be more expensive than more traditional cat foods. Finally, limited ingredient diets may not provide all of the nutrients your cat needs, so it is important to speak with your veterinarian about whether or not a limited ingredient diet is right for your cat.
