Ice packs are a common remedy for back pain, especially for acute injuries. The packs reduce inflammation and pain by constricting blood vessels and numbing the affected area. Many people find relief from using ice packs for back pain, but it is important to use them correctly to avoid further injury.
When using ice packs for back pain, it is important to wrap the ice pack in a towel or other cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin. Apply the ice pack to the affected area for 20-30 minutes at a time, and repeat as necessary.
It is also important to drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
If you experience any numbness, tingling, or increased pain while using ice packs for back pain, stop using them immediately and consult a doctor.

Have a freezer gel pack I have been using and really liked. Had been searching online and in stores for the same product. This was the closest I could find. It got cold quickly in the freezer and stays cold for over an hour.
You can mold it to fit comfortably, and I like the dimensions. It is a bit thinner than the one I had been using, but, works great!.
I thought this was going to be soft and pliable when it was frozen like the one I got from my physical therapy office. It’s not Its stiff as a board when it is cold and you can’t wrap it around your knee/arm whatever.
Plus it is colder than you would expect, so you have to have a towel. But when you take the towel away, the sheet or whatever you had it resting on is so cold that you can’t even put your leg down on it.
there must be something in the inside gel or liquid that makes it colder than water when it freezes. Overall, I am not happy with my purchase.
Hot/Cold ThermiPaq – Medium ThermiPaq is superior because of our patented, thermal ceramic compound made from all-natural, clay-based materials. Developed by a former NASA engineer, this revolutionary ‘Theramics’ compound utilizes radiant energy to create a deep penetrating, therapeutic system for hot and cold applications.
ThermiPaq’s radiant energy offers distinct advantages over the convective energy used in gel/liquid based products. Convective energy transfers immediately, resulting in a rapid loss of temperature and the potential for hot spots.
In contrast, radiant energy transfers slowly and evenly to your affected pain area. This allows Theramics therapy to penetrate deeper and more effectively. Doctors have identified the ideal combination of time and temperature for the highest level of therapeutic relief.
In comparison to other products, ThermiPaq maintains these optimum levels significantly better, and then retains a comfort level temperature for an extended period. The clay-based properties of Theramics enable you to easily mold the ThermiPaq pad to any affected area for better pain relief.
It’s safe and easy to use. Our radiant energy technology allows the pad to heat evenly throughout without generating hot spots that can harm your skin. For hot therapy, the pad quickly heats in the microwave (see instructions for actual times).
For cold therapy, place the pad in the freezer and it is ready to use in one hour. Soft, washable latex-free cloth cover. Pliable pad is non-toxic, biodegradable and environmentally safe. Velcro strap.
See bottom for safety instructions. Use as directed to avoid possible injury. Test temperature by applying ThermiPaq to sensitive skin, such as the underside of the wrist. Always test the ThermiPaq pad inside its special cloth cover. If the ThermiPaq wrap feels uncomfortable, remove for a few minutes and retest until comfortable. Do not use on infants. Pay special attention when using ThermiPaq for young children and older persons whose skin may be less sensitive to temperature extremes. Persons with diabetes, circulatory problems, nerve damage, paralysis or insensitive skin should use only as directed by a physician. Consult your doctor before treating any serious injury or when pain persists. Do not use in conjunction with liniments, balms or lotions.
Reviews From Real Customers
This is the second ThermiPaq wrap that I have purchased. I purchased the original one years ago and am still using it. I keep it in the freezer. I need a heat wrap but did not want to put the old one in microwave since it has been used in the freezer for so long.
As expected, the new wrap performs perfectly. I like that the Velcro strap holds in securely in place around my knee. The clay insert doesn’ t get too cold and one minute in the micowave is plenty of time to heat up.
I tried 15 seconds longer and it was too hot. This product has served me well and I definitely recommend trying it.
This is one of the best cold packs I have used. You place it in the freezer and take it out when your ready to use it. The clay pack will move and mold to the shape of your arm, foot or which ever part you want to use this on.
The other great feature is that it stays cold longer than most packs. It can be used as heat by placing in the microwave. What a great product!! I have used mine for about five years and it still works.
I bought another one to use so I’ll be able to use them closer together.
I use it only for cold so far. The clay is so malleable and stays cold close to an hour, as well as freezing very fast. With the sleeve, its a great deal compared to anything else I found. So comfortable and practical.
I bought two for recovering for foot surgery and tendonitis. Ended up giving one to her friend for her shoulder, which was much easier to use than products provided by the hospital.

Relieves back and neck pain and reduces swelling Comfortable, convenient, reusable, portable Unique two-sided design with flexible gel therapy to conform to body Store in refrigerator or freezer Provides soothing relief from sports injuries, chronic pain, back aches, muscle pain, headaches, arthritis flare-ups, sprains, and more A significant improvement over ice bags or gel packs in sleeves, the Thera-Med Back Pad Reusable Icy Cold Pack uses advanced materials and patented gels to keep gel evenly dispersed, staying flexible even at freezing temperatures.
Conforms to the body to aid in placement and coverage of larger treatment areas, or roll it up and place under the neck with its unique flexibility. Thera-Med is specially designed with two sides for direct contact with the body (without annoying sleeves or insulators,) to provide penetrating and effective cold therapy.
Dual-temp technology offers a soft, blue fabric side for gentle cooling and a smooth white side for maximum strength cold therapy. Here’s how it works: After storing in the freezer for at least 2 hours, Apply the pad to the area you wish to cool for 20-minute intervals, allowing for at least 20 minutes off before reapplying the treated area.
Repeat every 2 hours or as directed by a dr. Cool or re-freeze for future use. Measures 13. 5″ x 13. 5″ with rounded corners. Recommended by leading healthcare professionals.
I’ve been using these for a long time and this new design seems like it will last longer. They used to be clear plastic and they would get dried out and the sand would get lumpy. This is plastic and cloth that appears thicker than the old one.
It takes a few minutes in the microwave to heat up long enough to get hot and hold the heat and the work great as ice packs. Far better than the gel, which I’ve had break open making a giant mess. I also like it better than electric heat pads because they seem to be garbage anymore, either made of horrible plastic, or turning off too quickly and then flashing and breaking! These don’t have those problems, you’ll have to heat them up more frequently but they’re not going to short out and burn the house down either!.
This is the third Thera-Med Back Pad I have purchased. I use the pad to relieve pain from osteoarthritis of the spine pending treatment. I have also used it for several years for temporary relief of chronic back pain.
The secret is to determine the source of the pain. In my case, the pain originates in the disc between the 4th and 5th lumbar vertebrae. The pain radiates down my legs to my feet. My theory is that the cold on the lumbar are reduces swelling and takes the pressure off of the nerves that cause the pain.
I use it at night when I lay don to sleep. I use smaller cold packs during the day on the lumbar region held in place by a back brace. The only negative that I have found is that the plastic welds that hold the sections together are weak at the sides and eventually leak the material inside the back pad.
The welds need to be strengthened. This pad has provided me temporary relief for years. It works for me. I recommend that you try it.
I definitely do not recommend this item in its current form. This item has been changed at some point along the way and definitely does not compare to the product that it used to be. The previous back pad pad had four channels that stayed chilled (yet very pliable) for a very long time and were excellent following several spine surgeries.
This newest one is definitely 1/10th of what the old version was.

This long lasting cold pack has an innovative and reusable gel that freezes fast and lasts for hours outside the freezer. Its “ice cooling cells” keep it extra cold, while surrounding gel makes it flexible and super comfortable.
Superior breakthrough technology stays flexible and soft while frozen and moulds to the body for maximum pain relief. The dual sided sleeve with hook and loop closures helps keep pack in place to deliver optimal results.
Excellent for soothing pain and reducing swelling from sports or other injuries, carpal tunnel, or arthritis flare-ups.
It stays cold for such a long time. I use 1 with my back brace at home and when I go out like doctor appointments. I have so many other ice packs which only last the usual 20 minutes approx. I also use the pouch with velcro strap on other areas.
One for example my upper thigh. I have so many problems forever. I am so glad I found 1 last year and loved it. I just received an order for 3 more and now again I just ordered 2 more. I use them around the clock.
I bought two of these gel packs prior to my foot surgery two days ago. And I am VERY glad I did! These are great! Takes less than 20 minutes to freeze them and they hold their freeze for hours. It can be molded to fit the contour of the body pain you’re addressing, and they don’t get hard like regular, traditional ice packs.
Can be easily held in place with the velcro straps that hug the sleeve to your body. I hemmed and hawed a bit while placing my order, thinking >$10 was too much to pay for one, but I can’t praise these little gems enough! They’re worth their weight in gold when it comes to pain management and decreasing swelling.
Cold comfort. Relish the relief from this reusable ice and gel cold pack. The innovative gel freezes fast and lasts for hours outside the freezer, while the surrounding sleeve makes wearing the flexible pack comfortable.
An excellent choice for helping to soothe pain and reducing swelling. From Carex.
I had full knee replacement and needed to ice my knee several times a day and purchased this product for this reason. The ice pack is convient, stays cold for a couple of hours and conforms good around my leg.
The only reason I did not give it 5 stars was because the straps that are suppose to keep the pack in place by Velcro comes apart.
Using it for my shoulder and thigh. The cover with the velcro strips are perfect for holding it in place. Ice pack a tiny bit stiff but you can loosen it up a bit. Actually ordering another one. Great deal for the price.
Why You Need This Reusable Hot & Cold Gel Pack Get proactive in treating your aches and pains by keeping at least one of our Hot & Cold Therapy Gel Packs on hand. Microwave and freezer safe, this gel pack is convenient and easy to use.
There is so much confusion surrounding this topic, which is unfortunate because RICE treatment combined with therapeutic icing and heating (cryotherapy and thermotherapy) is an effective, affordable, and safe self-treatment option for many common, painful problems including: Arthritis Back pain Sprains or strains Pulled muscles Swelling Specifically suffering from lower back pain and tightness? Find out why a heated back brace is a good way to get rid of back pain and when heat therapy is NOT the answer.
In order to understand the benefits of cold, hot, and contrast therapy, it’s important to know why and when heat and ice work for pain relief—and when they don’t. Keep reading for more specifics and insight on what type of temperature therapy you should be using.
Ice vs. Heat Therapy: Which Is Best? Knowing what situations call for heat, and which call for ice can be tricky. Sometimes a single treatment might include both. As a general rule of thumb, use cold for acute injuries or pain, inflammation, and swelling.
Use heat for muscle pain, tightness, and stiffness. When Should I Use a Cold Compress When chilled, our flexible ice pack eases discomfort from acute injuries, sprains or strains, muscle soreness, spasms, bruises, swelling, and tension headaches.
The use of ice, or very cold temperatures, in a medical manner is known as cryotherapy. It is effective because it causes your blood vessels to narrow (vasoconstriction). Your muscles contract, inflammation is lowered, and pain signals are reduced.
On the contrary, ice can make muscle tension and spasms worse. How to Use This Cold Therapy Gel Pack Place flattened gel pack in freezer for 4 hours or more. Remains flexible when frozen. Wrap in cloth towel or place in compatible brace, then apply to affected area.
Use in 20 minutes increments or as medically prescribed. Allow skin to warm before reapplying. Return gel pack to freezer. How Does Heat Help Pain & When Should I Use It? When warmed, our heating pad soothes pain caused by cramping, stiff necks, backaches, and arthritis.
Unlike ice, heat therapy is a vasodilator, increasing circulation by expanding your blood vessels. This increased blood flow draws nutrients and oxygen to the injured area, which aids the healing process and helps your body’s cells get rid of waste products.
Unlike ice, heat can make inflammation and swelling worse so avoid hot therapy when treating an acute injury. Acute injuries are usually the result of a single, traumatic event, such as wrist fractures, ankle sprains, shoulder dislocations, and muscle strain.
Hot Therapy Instructions For best heating results, store at room temperature. If gel pack has been in freezer, remove and let it thaw to room temperature before heating. Place flattened gel pack in microwave and heat for 1 minute.
Carefully check temperature, squeezing gel around to distribute heat. Reheat in 30-second increments until desired temperature is reached. Wrap in cloth towel or place in compatible brace, then apply to affected area.
If gel pack feels uncomfortably hot, remove pack from body and reapply once it cools. Alternating Ice & Heat Therapy Sometimes, choosing only ice or heat doesn’t provide enough relief, which is where contrast therapy comes in.
Contrast therapy involves alternating applications of heat and ice to relieve pain associated with injury or overexertion. With this therapeutic method, you can simultaneously lessen puffiness, promote circulation, and loosen tight muscles.
This is usually achieved with a hot and cold bath, either dunking a limb or even immersing your entire body. However, a similar effect can also be achieved with two of our gel packs. Simply cycle between cold and hot therapy over a 20 to 30-minute period, with each application of an ice / heat lasting three to five minutes.
End with an ice pack. Research shows contrasting is most effective for treating repetitive strain injuries, so the best candidates for contrasting are those who suffer from: Plantar fasciitis Achilles tendinitis Shin splints Runner’s knee Patellofemoral pain syndrome Carpal tunnel syndrome Tennis elbow 5 Reasons Why People Love This Ice Wrap & Heat Pad Compatible Back Braces Are Available for Purchase Looking for hands-free support? This is actually the second one of these I’ve had, my first one I put in an ice chest to keep 15 pounds of crawfish tails frozen for a trip from Louisiana to Virginia in the August heat. 15 hours later everything (including ice pack) was still frozen solid.
This was just a regular Igloo ice chest too. I ordered this one because my other one now belongs to my daughter in Virginia and she isn’t turning it loose. Just one note when looking at these. The ice pack will not be any colder than your freezer you put it in to freeze it.
My chest freezer is set at -10 F degrees. These really work.
I bought this to use for long weekends at horse shows. Hearing that it kept ice cream frozen caught my eye when doing my research. So I thought I’d give it a try. I only had one of the tundras, and few other smaller ones I’ve had for years.
I tempted my freezer at zero degrees. The tundra was in the freezer for a few weeks before use. I threw 3, 5 lbs bags of ice a few frozen bottles of water in the cooler as well. That being said, I did prechill all drinks and food.
I prechilled the cooler with the ice over night. At 4 am I loaded all of the drinks and food with the all the ice packs. I will say for the day all the food and drinks stayed ice cold. And the ice cubes that were in contact with the tundra were frozen into a solid block as I have read could happen.
I noticed that the cheap small blocks I’ve had for years from my local superstore also froze the ice cubes into solid blocks as well. We were in the cooler frequently to say the least as it was hot and we were thirsty.
So the cooler was opened alot. I’m sure this didn’t help. I checked at 36 hours and the tundra was not frozen anymore I could see it was back to liquid, still cool to the touch. The small blocks were slush when shaken and cold.
In the end, if you need something for a day or two, this is going to work just fine. A bit pricey compared to cheaper brands. Just like any brand from your local superstore. I’m sure packing the cooler properly and limiting removing drinks and food would add to the tundra staying frozen longer.
As well as everything else. I’m gonna still tinker with the drinks, to food to block to ice ratio to see what improvements I can make.
Took one 5 Lb Tundra out on Lake Mohave on August 22, 2022. Dropped into the fish cooler with one 7 Lb bag of ice. Was on lake until noon and I still had ice when we came off. Ice remained frozen around the Tundra.
Definitely a huge help in savings. I purposely used one bag of ice just to see how well it would do, the Tundra passed the test.

I feel this was a great purchase and I am a Elementary school teacher and can not afford to buy items that do not last! Highly recommended!.

Product name is misleading. Yes, at room temperature the ice pack is soft. Had bough to wrap my daughters ankle, but once frozen… no longer soft or pliable.
I use these for arthritic knees. They work great and last for ages. This is my 2nd purhase of this type in 6 years. I freeze them on a curve so they wrap my knee at then end of a work day. Excellent use.
More convenient than the traditional ice bag, the reusable cold pack is effective at relieving pain and reducing swelling of common aches and injuries. Keep in the freezer to use again and again whenever you need fast pain relief.
Medically recommended for: ankle, headache, knee, etc. Remains flexible and comfortable when refrigerated or frozen. Convenient and non-toxic. Includes: 1 gel cold pack, 1 protective cover. Measures 4 inches x 10 inches (100 mm x 250 mm).
I love these. They don’t dribble as much as hard packs do when they start to hit room temperature, the gel allows it to form better to the area, and they can be easily sanitized or washed before sticking back in the freezer.
The Col-PaC re-usable cold pack offers an effective method of applying cold therapy to a localized area. Place pack in a chilling unit or freezer. Packs remain pliable and soft even below freezing. Pack maintains its therapeutic temperature level for up to thirty minutes.
Chilled pack should be applied to treatment area using either a towel or a Relief Pak cover. Has polyurethane exterior, which is more supple and maintains its flexibility at a lower temperature than the vinyl packs oversize – 12.
Omg this icepack is amazing. It helped my whole back get better so much faster than when I used my small lower pack from another brand only. It really cools the area fast and it quickly is ready to use again after a short time in the freezer.
This is an awesome product. It stays cold for a long time and doesn’t get hard in the freezer. I now have two different sizes and love them. I learned about these at my therapist office and had to ask the product name so I could get one for home.
It’s important to repair and recharge when you need to. ACE Brand Reusable Cold Compresses feature a soft touch fabric that conforms to the body and offers soft, comfortable cold therapy. Get fit for battle and back in the game with ACE relief.
The ice bag provides instant cold for relief. Just fill half way with ice cubes or ice and water close the leak proof cap and apply. The ice bag provides great relief for headaches arthritis flare-ups ankle sprains minor cuts and bruises insect bites sports injuries and toothaches.
This is a very well made ice bag that is comfortable to use. It’s a little small to use on a knee, but still forks fine. What I don’t like is that the opening is constricted by the twist in the material, making it hard to add and remove ice.
Perhaps the material will relax after use and make it easier to fill.
