20 Best Hair Dyes For Black Hair (2022 Updated)

I like this product. So far no adverse reaction to my scalp or skin. However, I wish the box would contain the hair conditioner from the same company. I seem to look for some other conditioner after coloring my hair.

I’ve used several hair coloring products in my life. I haven’t used anything in the past few years. I read the directions twice before beginning and used a timer. Well, my hair broke off where I applied it! I am NOT a happy customer and thought people should be warned.

I also have very think and healthy hair before applying this product.

In the process of trying to lighten my colour treated medium-dark brown hair. The day before dying I used “Malibu C Quick Fix Hair treatment”, a cheap and natural crystal product to remove previously applied dyes.

I then used this Naturigin colour, easy to apply, good instructions, pleasant scent, organic etc. It does tend to dry out my hair, even after using the included conditioning treatment, but the colour is fabulous! (Very close to the examples shown on the box).

I recommend using an intense Argan oil type conditioner the next day, this really helps. just my 2 cents!.

I purchased this product as a cost effective alternative to a product that was good but too expensive for the minimum quantity they offered. This hair dye product is more concentrated and therefore easily stretched to the consistency of my previous product with the same results.

In other words, I can make this product last longer for much less – Cha-Ching$$. As a mid-40’s guy, I use it to “fill in” a slightly receding hairline and my goatee (beard) for a natural look once visiting the barber (who is me).

I went to the gym this morning for my AM workout, 10 minute sauna and then showered and was careful not to aggressively rub the ‘colored’ area and lightly pat dry to preserve the coloring. The color appear to be holding up fairly well just be careful with handling it because they recommend using plastic gloves when handling and I know why – it stains easily.

I recommend placing an old towel over your application area to assure your countertops or sink basin does not get stained. This will be my “go-to” hair product secret weapon replacement and I will definitely purchase again.

If you’re looking for great bold colors than KISS semi permanent is for you. Their IG page have great color ideas. I have been using semi permanents since I was sixteen and I’m still a customer til this day.

I recommend this product to any parent who child wants to experience with colors in their had. My go to favorite is always reds and oranges. You can find this product at your local hair stores and probably some big retailers like Walmart and Target.

Works great. When putting it on it will look really dark like your beard is unreal. I learned to let it set for 15-30 minutes then rinse my beard with cold or warm water or even take a shower. After that everything looks normal black.

I use raw coconut oil on my face and beard and bam Im good to go out.

I have very fine (but ample) wavy/puffy hair that goes to my mid back. It’s naturally about a dark/medium brown that sun bleaches easily. I used to dye my hair with N4 and vol 20 developer but my hairdresser said my natural colour is so close that it’s not worth the damage I was causing.

Because of how fine and wavy my hair is it just doesn’t react well to any kind of harsh chemicals and quickly becomes dry and brittle. My hairdresser suggested transitioning to a semi and this product is almost perfect! Yes, it doesn’t last as long as permanent but I really like how it allows my natural tones to still show vs the solid single tone you get from permanent.

You don’t get the harsh grow out line and there’s zero long-term damage risks. I have like 5 grey hairs and it doesn’t do a whole lot for them but it does blend them for the first few washes. I’ve removed a star because it bleeds every time you wash your hair and by the time the bleeding stops the colour is gone.

I wanted to love this SO bad. It’s so easy and convenient. I could have touched up my hair anytime and any day of the week with ease. However- This is neither “medium brown” OR ashy. Total BRASS PALE BROWN, if you can call it brown at all.

This product was absolutely awful. I also tried the black. Again. black is NOT black. At best, it came out a brassy medium brown. So so so disappointed.

After years of using curl mousse products, it’s definitely the best one i ever had !!! First, the smell is gorgeous, and i couldn’t stop smelling my hair even one day after using it, that’s how divine it is ! Second, the texture is so smooth !! Really felt amazing compared to the other mousses i tried ! And let’s not forget the result ! Which i am very happy with, did help making my curls look nice and did not make huge and hard bulks of hair or anything as some would have done from what i used to have before.

Definitely recommend, think i’ll stick to this one from now on !! :).

First time using a home dye. My natural colour is dark blonde/light brown, with a fair bit of grey. After spending ages looking at hairs dyes, decided on this one & the 6N. Tried the 7N first as didn’t want to go too dark.

Followed the instructions to a tee & a little nervous when I saw the colour of the dye when applying. After the designated time, I rinsed the dye off & covered my hair in the conditioner. After towel drying my hair, I could see it was slightly orange.

Once dried fully, it became a brighter orange & over the next couple of days it went even brighter. My hair had not been coloured & was in very good condition before colouring. After using this, it felt very dry.

The colour is nothing like the colour on the box or any of the colours on the side to show what your hair could look like. I would not recommend this product & will not be using again.

I have never been so impressed with a dark hair dye in my life. I bought the juniper green and used it to dye a chunk of my hair. The texture of the dye itself is very thick, and therefore less likely to drip and splatter.

It smells fantastic, almost like something you would find in an apothecary. I had previously made the mistake of using splat and completely ruining the bathtub, but this dye took maybe a minute before the water ran clear, and what few stains were left behind came out effortlessly with a magic eraser.

Despite the lack of sticking or transferring of dye to skin, this looks FANTASTIC. The color is vibrant and absolutely gorgeous (photos of the dye itself on the website are very accurate), and while I’ve only just done it I’m eager to see how long this lasts.

Not only that, but I used this on freshly-bleached hair and the dye itself made it feel softer and look less damaged. Stunning, impressive, I can’t even begin to dream of going back. Absolutely stellar product.

This is probably one of the worst hair dyes I’ve ever used. I mixed it with the Blue Velvet because I wanted a slightly more blue shade. It came out a little dark and more purple, but that would have been fine if it didn’t get absolutely everywhere.

I dyed my hair back in August and the dye still stains everything. If anything touches my hair, it will stain. And whenever I wash my hair, which is only every couple of weeks because I have naturally coily and damaged hair, more dye comes out.

I rinse until the water becomes clear and it will still stain something later. Up until like a week ago, my fingers still turned blue when I scratched my head. And the worst part is that when I straighted the front of my hair, some of the dye must have come off because some strands turned blonde again.

I still have a full container left because I did a 1:1 ratio with the blue velvet, and I don’t know what I’m going to do with it. The only reason I gave two stars was because the color was pretty.

Dude this is the best and most coverage hair dye I’ve ever used! Even for its size, when I had shoulder length hair hardly even used a full container, now I use 1/3 for my short hair. I tried Arctic Fox before I learned about this and the color would wash out first wash! I have used Lunar Tides over a year now and I’m AMAZED at how long the color holds.

I have naturally thick dark brown hair so to use a product I can put right over without bleaching first is a key thing. Plus it softens my hair and smells good. I’ve used black, blue, green, pink, orange from them so far and I love the way my hair looks and feels and the fading of colors doesn’t look ew either.

The whole Developus/Satin line is extraordinary. I discovered it in a small beauty supply store in Sherman Oaks California that sells to a lot of movie and television hair and make up professionals. I was standing next to a woman who stood with about thirty boxes of Satin and who was the lead stylist for the TV series, Friends.

The colors are stunning, but the shine is over the top, probably due to the aloe vera/silicon components. Make sure you use the Developus developer along with the Satin color. Developus makes a developer formulated especially for gray hair.

I do my own color, but have my hair cut by a very good stylus. That saves me about $125 at the salon. Based on his observation of my color, my hair’s luster, and how well Satin handles gray hair, he started using it in his salon.

It’s actually targeted for professional use. I was lucky to find it.

The quality of this product is very good. I used the correct concentration of developer to color ratio on a test spot. it did not lift my hair. I haven’t been able to achieve HI lift color ( any brand)( and I have tried every brand) on my hair since I have had more grey hair because my dark level 6 has gotten darker with hormonal changes.

That being said I believe this product is a good value and is high quality, but unfortunately i cannot use high lift colors on my hair any longer. I went back to my stylist for partial foils with bleach is the only way to lighten my resistant dark hormonal hair and tone the grey highlights to blonde.

If you have virgin hair that is the correct level, you should have good results!.

I give this product 5 star because it works great, vegan option, and covers grays. I give it zero stars for color. it is brown. not mahogany (a reddish bown) not violet. B. r. o. w. n. Quite dissapointed with the color.

I would not recommend this product if you are going for the reddish violet color. I would recommend if you want brown.

I received this hair dye to trial as part of the Beauty Review Crew. I have used this brand of hair dye a few times over the past couple years. In particular, I have used the shade ‘Darkest brown’ which is the same shade I’m trialing today.

The shade has always been is a lovely vibrant colour and the colour result is similar to my natural hair colour. The dye promises to 100% grey hair coverage and it lives up to its promise. Preparing the dye for application is nice and easy.

After applying the gloves that are included in the packaging, you pour the colour formula into the bottle of developer before placing the lid back on and shaking the bottle until completely mixed. It’s that easy! Then starting at the roots, you evenly apply the dye.

The dye goes on smoothly and, surprisingly, the dye scent isn’t as strong as other brands. Other brands tend to have a strong chemical smell which makes my eyes water and nose tingle when breathing it in.

Clairol have done a great job at producing a hair product with a low scent. One of the best things about Clairol’s nice n’ easy hair dyes is the short processing times. Unlike other brands that have a processing time of upwards to an hour to reach your desired shade, these dye have an average processing time of just 25 minutes.

The short processing time means you can dye your hair during your lunch break, before a night out, or before a date, without it taking up too much of your time. The rinsing process is also quite a smooth and easy process.

After applying some warm water, give your hear/head a little massage and then rinse until the water runs clear from all the dye. It normally takes around two minutes for the water to run clear. After towel-drying my hair, I blow-dried my hair until was dry. Looking in the mirror you could instantly see how vibrant and lovely the hair colour result was, and it looked and felt really healthy.

I received Medium Chestnut Brown as part of the review crew. My hair is dyed medium brown over grey/white and is a few inches below my collarbones. It’s fine and flat with a slight wave immediately after air drying but this falls out quickly, it’s also horribly frizzy.

I found the instructions easy to follow and the dye easy to use although I did find I’d missed some areas which is unusual for me. I was using this on about 1 inch of grey roots, apart from where I’d missed it covered it well although it’s lighter on those grey areas and the other areas are now darker.

This means my roots are still visible although not grey and it would be good if the colour guide also showed the outcome on grey or white hair. I don’t usually see the roots so evident with other home colour I’ve done.

However the colour on the roots is nice and I might keep using this to get all my hair to a lighter colour. I didn’t notice that the smell was better or worse than other brands I’ve used and I had no adverse reaction on my scalp.

I wasn’t able to see a blend of tones and highlights although I did like the colour on both the grey and dyed areas. My hair felt soft after using and easy to comb. After a few further washes I’ve not see much fade or loss of condition.

Overall this Is a good dye for home colouring with good grey coverage although I feel I need to be more attentive when I use it. It’s a good price too.

As the cost of everything rises I have gone down to bi-monthly hair visits and have been colouring my roots in between. I have stuck to two main brands the past year so I was excited to trial clairols Nice n Easy to see how it compares! The new packaging is pleasing and clear on what it delivers.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that the scent wasn’t overbearing whilst I applied this to my roots. It mixed very well in the applicator bottle and was so easy to apply. The gloves fit well and I waited the appropriate time until rinsing off.

The colour rinsed off well and the conditioner was lovely. I decided to let my hair air dry for the best and most accurate review on colour, shine and coverage of greys. So the colour match was great, it definitely covered my grey roots and my hair was a little dry on the ends but nothing a good leave in conditioner can’t fix! I like that this dye did what it said and was not gimmicky or over priced compared to competitors.

A solid budget buy option if you prefer colouring hair at home. It may dry your hair out if used frequently so a good quality conditioner for coloured hair would be a must alongside this product.

My hair is naturally really dark brown but has been bleached heavily to get platinum so very damaged. I used this dye over faded dark red brown and I’m in love. It’s more red than my previous red which I adore because I didn’t think it would be vivid like the box said.

It definitely is. Colour payoff is excellent. Easy to use, instructions were straight forward. The smell is really nice I think the conditioner you get with it is the smell that stays in the hair and it smells like a standard nice conditioner.

The red dripage from washing it did get everywhere but it washes off with water. Took longer to wash out than to apply. Ignore the rinse out instructions just cold water shampoo twice then use conditioner.

If you don’t want it to fade always wash hair with cool water not freezing and definitely not hot. Try to wash your hair once or twice a week no more so that you won’t need to dye it as much. My hair is so soft it’s still somewhat dry but that’s because it was bleached a couple months ago.

The only transfer I’ve had was on my towel when drying it but haven’t had any more transfer so far so I think I’m safe on that. I used two boxes on waist length hair, one on roots other one on mids and ends.

I have used Olia a few times now so I know how it works. I had previously used very intense red 6. 66 on ash blonde hair and let it wash out 80% to 90% before putting this rose shade in. I naturally have Ash blonde and grey hair in my 50s.

I used 2 boxes on mid shoulder length hair of this pink shade. This did lighten my hair to a very peachy, candy floss faint pink that was really patchy. There is only about 10% pink colour. It’s definitely not what is on the box, considering I did let my previous colour wash out to very light almost blonde again.

I am in NZ and had it shipped over from Australia as this colour isn’t available here,but I won’t be using it again. Quite disappointed really. I will wait about 4 to 6 weeks and put in either a red or a light brown to cover this.

For now I will have to just disguise it with a messy ponytail with long side strands or some beach waves made with my ghd. I don’t recommend this product at all. I even googled videos of people reviewing this product before using it too.

Most didn’t like the result. I don’t think there is enough colour in this product in the end. I think it has actually wrecked my hair sadly.

Without a doubt, Bigen has saved me from many. It is a product that does not damage your skin. It is a natural dye so that beautiful. I use it for eyebrow pigmentation and it works incredibly for me.

It is one of the best products that I have tried, nothing harmful, the pigmentation lasts on the skin for 2 weeks and in the hair it lasts more than 5 months.

This is my favorite coloring product. It doesnt smell like strong chemicals when you use it. And if youre just coloring again to refresh your hair then you dont even need a whole bottle. Its inexpensive and it smells good, and it works.

Black brown is now my go-to after I used the jet black one for a couple of years. Black brown definitely looks black but just without that fake look you get with jet black even if you have naturally almost-black hair like mine.

Absolutely brilliant hair dye, my hair was a mahogany colour, I honestly didn’t think the colours would work with out bleach but it’s amazing!! I have loads left and my son used it as well will definitely be sticking to this now.

Perfect for getting a clean icy white on level 9-10 hair. I did half 11. 2 and 9. 2F with 20vol over prelightened roots to acquire some additional lift and to ensure it didn’t deposit too dark and the turn out was spot on.

Gorgeous icy white blonde. This is the closest I’ve gotten to a a perfect icy white blonde in all my years. Might even add a small amount of clear next time and process longer.

1 (ash range) recommended only to tons on existing level not to counteract earth while lightening.

I actually used the shade 210 Lavender, but that one isn’t available to review on here. So I took a huge leap of faith, and dyed my hair an “unnatural” color all on my own! My hair was on the dryer side when I decided on undertaking the dye job, and I couldn’t believe how much dye it sucked up.

I actually used two of the packets of 210 Lavender dye on my belly button-length hair, and had none left over. To be honest, I wish I had a third packet to really apply it thoroughly, because I was nervous about running out the whole time.

The dye feels like a conditioning hair mask. I lightened my hair to a bleach blonde almost white months ago and chose just to rock some natural roots with the purple color, so I’m not sure hot well this dye applies to freshly lightened hair.

The dye is pretty forgiving, for anyone that wants to do it themselves. After carefully applying the dye, making sure each strand was fully saturated, and waiting a little over a half hour, I washed out the dye.

When the dye was fully rinsed, my hair texture still felt healthy and didn’t feel overly processed. I found that the color stuck pretty universally, and didn’t experience any areas holding the color better than others.

Does stain hands.

For a back story I am a natural sandy brown and my hair is in a mohawk currently. So I purchased the iroiro neon blue and first I did a bleach kit as I mention darker natural hair as I wanted to get the full effects of the neon.

So bleached first then onto the color. I applied the color and left it on for 45 minutes so that i would get the bright vibrant blue i wanted. 45 minutes later i wash dye out under cold water as warm will fade it, didnt want that.

However I have been dying hair for 20+years so I’m experienced and know what I’m doing. I am almost a week out and I literally look like I used one of the 1q 0 washes dye because I havent washed it yet but it looks as if I’ve pretty much combed it right out.

This is by far the worst hairdye I have ever used. I’ve used numerous brands and numerous different colors and I will never purchase this brand again. I would not recommend it as it does not do what it stands behind.

Worst product ever.

I had this put in by my hair stylist. She did research before buying a green color. This was her first time doing both green and this brand. This is 350 Neon Green. I fell in love almost instantly when the color barely washed out of my hair when rinsing.

It’s so bright and very beautifully pigmented. The fade is absolutely stunning. And definitely is a 2 in 1 color taking less time to do a yellow to green fade in my hair. As it fades naturally. This one is also very UV reactive.

I sat in the sun about 3hrs about 8 days and 1 wash later and it was so nest to see the yellow green color. And then have it turn a darker shade indoors. This is by far my most favorite color I have ever placed in my hair.

I had her do a crown effect to my underlayment. With my natural color on top. And it’s the perfect balance between the 2. It’s been a month and 4 washes later. And I still cannot believe this is my hair now.

Definitely recommended.

Color is definitely more black than dark brown. The price is excellent, you get a generous amount of product and it works in 5-10 minutes. However it is NOT drip free so it’s harder to use. If the consistency was thicker it would be almost perfect.

Ive used this product for many years and never had any problems. My edges are mostly gray and although Im 67 yrs old Im not ready to embrace the gray. Its mild enough to use on permed hair. Im all natural now and it does the job all the time.

I will not use anything else.

I’ve been wanting to dye my hair this combination for sooo long, I was super hesitant because of how nice my blonde hair was but I’m glad I did cause this hair dye, is so good! This product smells really good the smell isn’t overbearing either; it is also vegan so even better! Took me forever to achieve this look with my sister! But it came out exactly how I wanted it I honestly wasn’t expecting the green to be so bright but I’m in love! The mid of my hair is the color Aquatic the ends is the color, Area 51; I really love the green color! If your looking for a bright green I would highly recommend it; but of course make sure your hair is light enough to take the color in.

I got this color after a good talk with a rep @ Salon Centric, I wanted a cute color but not too distracting bc of work. She picked this purple for me but I never committed till recently! I got a more blunt mullet and I figured I deff need a color to match the edge and this was insanely pigmented 😻 so glad this was the color she recommended bc it wasn’t muted but also not a neon green scary color.

I was scared it would be more dark but did it anyway and it wasn’t at all it was a super saturated purple …a blueish purple for sure. I went to the beach and it of course took most of the color out BUT it faded nicely and I had about 4 shampoos of decent color after that beach trip! So it deff has lasting power I left it in my hair for an hour – as it faded it became more of a lilac pastel purple 🥰🥰.

Shopping for an at-home dye kit can be a daunting experience. When every box on the shelf over-promises luxe, salon-worthy locks that will sparkle like diamonds, it’s easy to overlook Revlon’s no-frills packaging.

During covid lockdown I didn’t know what to do with our growing hair as my husband and myself was unable to go to a hairdresser. I had just purchased a new good hair shaver to keep my husbands hair and beard looking good but what could I do? One evening I had the idea to actually shave my hair off with number 2 attachment.

I had previously bought and loved this product so I then sprayed my hair all over with this steel blue spray. I had a doctors appointment the next morning so I boldly walked in with my super short steel blue hairdo.

Both my doctor and the nurses raved about how good I look. I have even got stopped several times and asked what colour was I using. At 73yrs old I feel really funky this is an amazing product which not only colours my hair but also colours my scalp which makes for even coverage.

The great thing too is my hair is so easy to maintain and I don’t have to use creamy messy colours.

I love the matrix hair color line. This is my second time using it and the colors are so pretty and vibrant. I went to Walmart the second time and had my hair done the first time was at ulta who uses the same brand and the color last a very long time and fades nicely as well which is equally an important.

It will come out darker initially. I have 3 shades in my hair the pic is not doing it justice. The ends will turn more lilac/violet after 1 or 2 washes. I can’t remember the exact colors used I know one was called royal.

This was done yesterday so very new and fresh. Please excuse the fact I have no makeup on. I recommend walmart as well as long as you get someone who knows what they are doing because the pricing is way better.

If you want to go full platinum in one sitting go somewhere else from a darker blonde or light brown that is. Do your research always. 🙂.

I am not a professional beautician, but I know more than the average person. That being said, given I am a natural blonde and currently have a platinum base—it is easy for me to color my own hair if it’s as simple as slapping on a single color.

My hair is a little past my shoulders and one tube of this works well for my entire head. It smells amazing and rinses well with several liberal washes. My hair feels great and it lasts a long time and generally fades very nicely.

Highly recommend. The color is very pigmented and soaks in very well!.

One of the most vibrant semi permanent direct dyes I have personally used. It’s very pigmented, shiny and conditioning. As directed, shampoo in cooler water for longevity. This particular line has a permanent and Demi permanent series.

It is still recommended to shampoo in cooler water along with no sulfate shampoo. When this line was launched matrix also launched the keep me vivid leave in spray which definitely pro Kong’s the pigment.

This line had minimal fading while ive found other lines like ion, pravana, uberliss fade a little faster. The removal for this line is no where basic like other lines I have used. You must know all of the underlining pigments to not run into mishaps.

DO NOT USE BLEACH. Matrix socolor cult has a specific remover. I recommend using this to remove. Also to avoid odd color bands DO NOT let Demi/permanent touch each other or semi. Recommend doing a double process.
