20 Best Hair Dye For Dirty Blonde (2022 Updated)

I mixed equal parts Satin 7A and Satin 6N, about 50/50 with Satin Demi developer for my roots. Then mixed another bowl of Satin 7A and Satin 8N for the rest of my shoulder length hair to cover grow out that became too light and brassy.

I’m naturally about these levels, but years of coloring and grow out gets dry and multi colored brassy leaning towards level 8/9 on ends. Roots about 20% grey. Results: nice color blend and coverage, natural looking with some gold reflections.

Not orange or cherry coke or violet, no green from the ash. Did roots first with a brush, then mid section with gloved hands. I quickly mixed some 9A for ends but didn’t really need it. Roots about 30 minutes, mid about 25, ends 15.

I’ll do this again and leave it on longer now that I know I like it. Very pleased, very natural looking. Might pop a few highlights in around my face soon. But lots of dimension just with these colors.

Nice mid range light brunette. Hair feels very soft after only 1 wash out shampoo condition. Much richer truer brown than ion or wella. I find wella pulls really cherry/orange on me. Good luck.

I started using Ultra Vivid Fashion Color 3N about 5 years ago when I couldn’t find the brand I had previously used. At first, I declined using it when a sales women at a beauty supply store recommended it.

After seeing it in the 3rd beauty supply store I stopped in, I decided to give it a try. I decided it’s only hair. Right?? What I loved about it first was the fact it came in a large tube of 3oz. I also liked the idea of it being Aloe Vera based low ammonia cream hair color on the market.

Once I realized it was carried in all 4 of the beauty supply store’s in my area, well I didn’t feel as nervous to try it out. I also might add the price was very appealing, between $9 and $10 dollars! My hair is long and medium in thickness.

I’d say the length is close to my lower back. I do have some gray hair, more than I’ll admit too😉. Mixing the Satin Hair Color with the developer I used a 1oz Satin Hair Color to 1oz developer ratio just like the direction stated on the box.

I followed the directions for gray coverage otherwise the ratio is different. Since I was depositing hair color and not lifting, I used a 5 volume so my hair wouldn’t get damaged or fried in the color process! I purchased a hair color bottle with measurements stated on bottle and started with measuring out 3oz of developer and then added the Satin Hair Color.

After shaking for a minute the bottle started turning a light brown color. I then checked the measurement in the bottle and I had exactly 6oz. Application was pretty straightforward for those who’ve colored their own hair.

The hair color once mixed was not to thin or to thick and came out very easily. It will however stain anything it comes into contact with. I have noticed I can get it off most anything except wood doors, floor, and countertops take awhile before your rid of it, so apply with caution.

Once applied I left hair Color on hair for the full 45 minutes. I also used a plastic cap once I finished apply hair color. When it was time to wash I first rinsed my hair very well,shampooed twice, and put on a 3 minute conditioner.

Color easily washed out of bathtub And bathtub walls. After, I styled as usual. What I noticed immediately was my hair was vibrant and had a good shine also I couldn’t get over how soft it was for being colored and it smelled amazing.

The corned lasts a good amount of time. I normally need to redo my grow out every 6 weeks. I have absolutely ZERO complaints when it comes to Satin Hair Color Vivid Fashion. It is a product I highly recommend and have used nothing else in 5 years!!.

I love Wella’s Demi Permanent hair color because they provide a beautiful shimmer, are easy to mix into a bowl or a tube depending on your preference, and coloring hair at home saves so much money! Make a note that there’s a big difference between the shade 6N and 7N.

I prefer a 7N, which is lighter. Also, if you’re executing highlights that will lift your base color up a couple shades, it’s best to weave in a lightener that contains a bonding material, which can be sold at Sally’s Beauty or Amazon or a Beauty Supply Store that sells hair color, not from a box! Yes, you can mix in an 8A, which is a beautiful ashy blonde shade for cool toned blonde highlights into the bonding lightener with a 2:1 ratio of the Wella Activator/Developer.

A volume 20 Developer will work for this just fine too! 2 parts developer and 1 part Wella hair color. I like to cut strips of foil to the size of a dryer sheet, take a metal tooth comb and fold it over pieces you’ve woven from 4 quadrant sections of hair so it’s a thin layer.

The dull side of the foil should face outwards and paint those strands! Remember, you can always mix more shades into the 8A! That’s something I love about Wella demi-permanent hair colors because you can either have a very shiny monochromatic shade or blend highlights with mixtures or mix colors to acheive the shade you desire.

I love a good base shade and my base is 7N, which is a medium/dark blonde, but I’m reality, my hair looks light brown. Just remember to lean lighter for the Wella Demi Permanent hair colors and Wella also makes toners that can add a little more of a tint to brighten! Salons actually use demi-permanent hair dye because it’s less damaging than permanent hair dye, it will give a shiny effect that creates a healthy appearance, and it feels very smooth as far as texture goes.

I highly recommend Wella Demi Permanent for anyone dying their hair!.

This review is for the demi-permanent 8a light ash blonde: Would have given 5 stars except, as others have mentioned, this shade is not a “light” blonde unless in bright, natural light. Indoors or in darker light, it appears dark blonde—so be aware before you use that it may come out looking more like a level 7, not a level 8.

I knew this going in but wish they’d re-label their blonde series to match how it actually turns out. Anyways…. The demi-permanent is easy to use and works almost like a toner—I’d been using T14 toner and, due to the developer, was having problems with it lifting areas of my hair I didn’t want lifted.

So I watched a lot of videos and read a lot of reviews on the Wella demi 8a and decided to give it a shot, and it did exactly what I needed it to do—it toned my hair, leaving it a cooler tone but still with a little depth and warmth while leaving my roots alone (no hot roots!).

Will definitely use again but may mix the 10NA and 8A together, as there doesn’t appear to be a level 9 in the demi-permanent line.

The only reason this isn’t a 5â review is because it came out so much darker than I expected. I was really hoping for a lighter brown, I bought the light brown and it definitely went dark. Some of that may have been my fault because it ended up processing about 10 minutes longer than it called for because I was busy with my son.

That’s the ONLY negative I can think of for this product. It’s inexpensive, I found at Sally’s, it can also be ordered online. It smells good, and it’s easy to mix. Very easy to apply, it’s a cream but not a thick one so it costs the hair easily and quickly.

My grays are so hard to cover but this did the trick! Very impressed with it! Especially for a demi permanent color.

This is a lovely hair colouring product: easy to use and great colour results. The smell is, not unpleasant, just different. My only criticism would be that using it on my level 7/8 hair, I used 8A, there isnt enough ash in it to counteract the orange undertone that kicks up when you lighten in that mid blonde range, so it looks a bit warmer than I would have liked.

Toning shampoo (blue) helps. It will probably get cooler on my second use when I retouch my roots. It looked lovely on the lighter parts of my hair though so my advice would be to use it if your hair is lighter than a level 8, but be prepared for your colour to be warmer than ash if its darker.

The hair mask thats included has a, again not unpleasant, smell to it thats different, but gives lovely, shiny results. I will be using this colour product again and would recommend it.

I have been trying to buy and use more organic beauty products, particularly hair care products without SLS & Parebens etc. I did a patch test the night before to check this new product didn’t cause any reactions – it didn’t, the next day I used the product.

First thing I noticed it was harder to apply than my previous dye(I have dyed my own hair for decades) but it was after I had dyed my hair I started to notice the problems. Firstly my hair became so dry and lifeless, then I noticed I was starting to lose more hair than normal, clumps appeared on clothes and worktops etc.

I have never suffered hair loss like this before. I wasn’t completely happy with the colour either. I have always used Ash Blonde to colour my hair and this was nowhere near as nice as the brand I had been using, it faded after two weeks or so as well, I have never suffered these problems before.

I was reluctant to buy this product again after using it just once and I would not recommend it.

Bought this to cover my already dyed darkish red to lighten it a little! Worked perfectly for me, a lovely copper colour. Noticed that the box had a different photo to one advertised online, this is probably nearer to the outcome.

Allowed longer to dye hair with product as it had more stages to do than others. This worked well for me, as I usually hate doing my hair, but actually found it quite relaxing! Managed to watch a YouTube on pruning roses for 30 minutes, then cleaned the shower cubicle inside, leaving the conditioner on for 5 minutes.

Felt surprisingly good as I had showered, dyed and conditioned hair, washed shower-all in one go! Conditioner did well to loosen hair, just combed through in sections to de-tangle! Will definitely use again!.

All Wella toners and coloring are great in my experience! The first time I went blonde from dark brown hair, I had very warm under tones and was going for more of an ash. I used Wella’s frost blonde toner, with one use my hair went from yellow and orange under tones to cooler under stones, leaving me with a beautiful ash blonde! Lasted a long time, of course I used purple shampoo and conditioner afterwords.

If you’re blonde and need a tone or going blonde, I recommend wella’s toners! May need two if you have longer hair.

I am a lisence cosmetologist and have been using wella products for years. I like the creamy consistency and how true to their color swatches they are. When I use it for root touch ups I can make one tube last 3 or 4 touch ups.

I also like that it doesn’t have a strong smell like most color products, instead I actually get compliments on the scent like I used a leave in conditioner, which it also leaves my hair soft afterwards so I don’t have to use any leave in conditioners like many other hair color products.

This stuff is far superior to the colorant in those drugstore kits. Sure, you need to buy a developer. And you don’t get the cheap little plastic gloves. But wow, right after coloring my hair looked like the star’s in a TV commercial.

Great shine, deep color, great gray coverage. I’ve used every brand of drugstore kit for decades and never got this result. So you have to buy additional supplies. It’s worth it.

I was born with blonde hair. But into my 20’s I had to start colouring it to brighten it up. And as I aged, I had to keep changing the colour I was using. but always in the “ash blonde” colour range.

Now, I am 78 and need to go lighter to blend with my almost white hair. The trick to beautiful blonde hair is to prevent brassiness. So, I have been using a purple shampoo and conditioner for years. The great thing about this hair colour is the box contains a purple condition.

It is the best purple conditioner I have ever used. It leaves my hair shiny and prevents any yellowing which is so important when you have grey or white hair. For the last 50 years, I have coloured my hair by myself, saving thousands of $$$.

If you have a hairdresser you know well, ask her/him to go with you to the drugstore to select the right shade for you. And don’t get stuck on one colour forever; you need to change as you age. BTW. The other reviewer did not select the right product for her daughter.

She should have read the boxes or asked the consultant what she needed.

Vibrant, soft and fun! I started with light brown hair, level 5-6, and went to this beautiful, edgy red. I love it! Its the expected color shown on the box and just what I was looking for! Application can be messy, so take precautions before you even start.

The smell really isn’t strong IMO, and it doesn’t linger. Hoping the red stays vibrant and doesn’t fade too quickly. Very happy with this dye!! A few tips… Wear black, something easy to remove. I moved my bathroom rugs and made sure to put a damp wash cloth within reach to catch drips on my skin.

I always section my hair for even coverage. Use (better) gloves to apply, and don’t squeeze too much out, it’s rather runny.

If a hair dye could be said to be a soul-mate. I have found my soul-mate! For years, I have used those direct deposit “fun” colour type dyes on part of my hair. Some brands are better than others, of course, but they always faded out too fast for me, or left me with stains everywhere (and not just from wet hair.

but while dry. pink sheets, pink fingernails – from merely running my fingers through my dry hair!), so there was always some sort of drawback with them. I have naturally porous hair, so I never needed to pre-bleach in order to get coverage (luckily, I also never aimed for a pastel, either) despite having around a 6 or 7 level hair and auburn/ginger in colour (the orange in my hair did mean that the end colour was not true to the intended colour, though).

I did pre-bleach for this colour, but only to remove the last bits of a deposit dye and because I was unsure about the coverage of this dye. I shouldn’t have worried. Not only did it take wonderfully to the bleached hair (and softened it back up to near-undamaged, as my hair did not like being bleached at all), but it also covered some of the unbleached hair that I accidentally included in the dye coverage, some of which also still had direct dye still staining it.

You cannot tell the difference between bleached, unbleached, and any remaining direct dye stained areas (some bleached parts still had it too). It’s all covered, and looks the same, but without looking flat.

it has dimension to it, like hair should have. So, it doesn’t look like a flat matte lifeless solid wig of pinkish hair. it just looks like. (fuchsia/plum) hair! 🙂 Now, although this colour is a level 9, so you would think it is a light colour.

it is not. The end result (bleached or unbleached) is around a 6 or 7 level (same as my normal level), indoors it does appear slightly darker, too (maybe a 5 or 6 level). This could be due to how porous my hair is, but having seen pictures of others who have used it, I think it just is that dark due to being very pigmented.

But! That *is* what I wanted! The colour is glorious! The -98 part of the number system indicates violet red. 9 = violet, 8 = red. So if you are looking at other Igora colours, keep that in mind. An -88 will be a red red, a -99 will be a violet violet, etc.

The order does matter, as the first number is dominant, the second is to shift it. So an -89 would be redder, and the -98 is more purple. The end result is a wonderful medium/bright fuchsia/magenta (pink!!) in sunlight, and indoors looks more medium/dark plum/wine.

It glows and shines and is sovery soft! Because it doesn’t just coat the hair on the outside, it doesn’t leave any weight or feeling of having something coating your hair (I don’t use styling products, so that’s sort of a big deal to me).

and no funky coloured fingernails! And the shine! It isn’t just vibrant – it shines! It doesn’t leave the hair dull looking at all. My natural virgin healthy hair looks dull in comparison (seriously, I am contemplating actually getting some of this line in a shade to match my own hair colour, just for the shine factor).

If you like a deep purple/pink colour, I highly recommend this colour (and if you don’t change colours every two weeks or something, that is). If you have naturally darker hair than a level 5 or 6, I don’t know what will happen for you (I used a 20 developer, so a 30 may give better results for darker hair), but if you have 6 or lighter, it should come out as a deep berry/wine/plum (the red/pink hue is still present, just muted) indoors and deep bright magenta/fuchsia outdoors.

If you want to add a little pizzaz to a brown dye, just to kick it up a notch, I’d also say this would do the trick, if you add just a bit in with your brown dye and developer. The Igora line also offers some “fun fashion” colours, most of which are in the pastel family.

I would say this could be added to those to achieve a lighter colour of pink, or to punch any of those up a few notches as well. I do not know about mixing it with any other brand of dye, or what that would do to the end result, so I will not comment on that other than to say “proceed with caution” if you choose to do that.

I cannot, as yet, make any claims about the fade factor or how long it will last. But, other reviews of this line say it lasts and lasts with little fading, even the reds. So, I have high hopes, and even if it does fade, I expect it to be slower than any direct dye (and hopefully more evenly).

I wish I had used the Igora developer (contains oil), because if it came out this soft and lovely to the touch (over fried bleach hair!) with cheap no-name developer (it’s what I had on hand from my daughter).

I can only imagine how much better it would have been with the higher quality stuff. Next time, I will!.

The ammonia smell hits you when you first squeeze the colour out, but it mixes nicely with the Schwarzkopf dedicated developer. It’s smooth and has opaque coverage. 100% grey coverage when mixed with natural, large colour selection.

I use it for certain clients but not everyone.

Great product. Only downside is I should have ordered the 3-99. There wasn’t quite the amount of violet as I expected. But that may be buyer error. It did have a pretty strong smell, but nothing out of the ordinary for permanent hair dye.

honestly, got bored in quarantine and wanted to dye my hair. ive always had dark brown hair, occasionally id go to the salon and go lighter or darker. but my boyfriend suggested i dye it blue black. so i searched online for good at home dyes for blue black and this one popped up.

i went to walgreens and bought 3 boxes (my hair is long) but luckily i only needed to use 2 boxes. better to be over prepared than under when coloring! so to start off, the smell wasnt bad at all! i was expecting a strong scent since its permanent color, but it wasnt strong at all.

once i rinsed it out after about 30 mins, the water going down my shower drain looked kinda. red/purple? i was confused and worried id have a red tint to my hair. (ive done red before, im over it and red seems to be the hardest color to cover/remove).

anyways, once i got out the shower and blowdried it i realized it wasnt tinted with anything. yet! it was a beautiful black, and when i stepped outside into the natural sunlight i could see blue tint to it.

SOO HAPPY with the results. and the conditioner it comes with smells soo good. my hair was left shiny and beautiful and i officially have a new favorite at home hair dye product. my hair feels so smooth, better than ever.

and the color is perfect.

I did not like this brand of hair color. The color itself was beautiful once I had it done (the color was called Amethyst something) but during the process I noticed that when I was shaking the bottle to mix the colors that the product got very hot.

I thought that was weird and was definately a firs for me. Kinda scared me but I used it anyways. I was wearing shorts when I was applying it when I noticed a burning sensation on my leg. I had spilled a small drop of it on my leg and it was burning.

I quickly wiped it off. I went ahead and finished because I was already in the middle of applying it to my hair. The smell of chemicals was much more overwhelming than any other time or product I used to dye my hair before.

It also got very hot on my head too. I’m sure I should’ve stopped and not finished it. But even though it came out ok and I had no reactions on my scalp the fact that it burned my leg so bad from just one drop and the fact that the product became so hot in the bottle scared me enough to never want to use this brand of hair color again.

I had bought this color initially to add highlights to my dark hair I had already applied a lightening treatment to my hair before applying this color. I loved the color as it did the job without applying brassy tones.

Trial and error tips: apply to dry hair and let it process longer if you’re aiming for a more intense deposit. (I left mine on for closer to 35 minutes instead of 20. ).

LOVE LOVE LOVE this brand of haircolor. It is consistent and truest to the intended color. The color selection is fantastic and the ratio to developer is a 1/2 so you need less dye. I currently use a different color but it’s still wella.

Will always use. Highly recommend.

This haircolor holds the color much longer than the types you find in discount stores. It also allows you to use as much or as little as you need. I have short hair and one bottle will do my hair at least two times.

I’m naturally dirty blonde but regularly dye my hair dark brown. I alternate between dying just my roots and dying my whole head of hair since the whole thing doesn’t need dying that often but it looks terrible when my blonde roots start coming through.

I usually use one of the other Wella colour touch shades (think it’s 4/71) but decided to buy this one since it was on sale and is also a brown, but it came out looking a reddish brown which just wasn’t very flattering on my roots – in some lighting it just looks brunette but in other lighting you can really see the red.

On the box it says “medium intense brunette brown” so there was no indication of it having strong red undertones but it could have been my mistake – maybe it’s on a colour chart somewhere that I didn’t look at.

Overall though, I really like the Wella Color Touch dyes, I’ve been using them regularly for about a year and a half – they never leave my hair feeling dry and they’re easy to mix and apply.

I actually purchased the wrong color online while I was distracted, I took it to a store who were happy t exchange it for the right color. I have used this product for around 5 years now and am super happy with it.

I find the application easy and the color simply washes out over time. I use a combination of 2 colors and get 3 applications a year which is fine for my level of greying. Would totally recommend!.

This dye is semi-permanent or ‘quasi’ depending on what volume emulsion is used with it. For damaged hair the lowest volume emulsion, 1. 9%, is best – this will only deposit the colour and not lighten the hair at all.

Digital scales help to make sure the ratio of 1 part dye to 2 parts emulsion is achieved correctly. This mixes up to a lovely creamy texture which goes on to the hair really easily and doesn’t drip. It has covered my greys well but subtly and given the hair a very natural-looking colour with a few golden tones among the ash.

When I washed the product off I was surprised how nice the hair felt, and although I conditioned after using, I credit this product with leaving a nice shiny finish on the hair. The product smells lovely with no ammonia tang and I feel quite safe having it on my scalp and hairline.

*I did the allergy test 48 hours prior to using the product and would never use a hair colour without doing this*. Altogether a brilliant product. Comes up a tad darker than one might expect but may lighten after shampooing.

A great product, absolutely chuffed to bits with it. Will definitely purchase again.

Most of my hair was virgin, gotta say an 85% of it. 5 boxes of [brand:revlon] Colorsilk, ultra light sun blond #3, later, my hair became the color I was looking for! (Shown on the right) I knew I had to get a really light hair dye color in order to bring it the color of my desire.

This one won!! No need to go to the salon to get my hair bleached out by professionals, just few boxes of this hair dye and call of the day!! I love it!! It didn’t leave my hair feeling dull nor with a straw-like texture and best of all, it’s pocket friendly! At the salon, I was gonna pay $260 to dye my hair, and with these babies, I only spent $20 at Walmart and came out with the results I was looking for!! Truly reccommend to anyone! I even [brand:revlon] use the dark color to dye my husband’s hair and beard because it works perfectly on his grays!! Lol loooove it!! Ammonia free, doesn’t smell strong, leave ur hair looking healthy after removing the hair dye.

I give this an amazing five stars because PRAVANA?????? CHROMO-SILK??? IT MAKES MY HAIR FEEL LIKE FEATHERS!!!!!!! SOFTEST!! I ONLY KNEW That she was using this product brand well product and brand name was when she said it in front of the shampoo bottle I looked over out of curiosity and never forgot this name and I knew it was chroma silk! So I asked her when she finished putting this color which was a violet blind it was just like not purple at all but not exactly blue either very very beautiful color and it was in a light do you know Violet of course not that bold!-not this one, meaning me! LOL.

 BUT THE SIIIIIILKYYYYYYYY IN THIS PRAVANA CHROMA-SILK IS AN EYE-GRABBER!! If I’m in ANY SELF-CARE STORE W/ these kind of name brands/products?? IT’s ALWAYS PRAVANA IM SEEKING!-because my best friend which is my hairdresser I know that any color even brought bright sun shine yellow, or it was sun orange yellow or Sunkist yellow I cannot remember because it did not go on my hair after all LOL but I do remember it’s one of those it was so bright wow! Anyways it turned out very beautiful because this girl skin was almost negative white literally no offense just was a beautiful beautiful milky white skin color!!!! So with this wow bright yellow hair which some people are thinking I know when they look at her hey did you mean to get blonde or yellow because the blonde is yellow after all we know this or a “golden “OK whatever it’s yellow! So I’m going to start by saying that this hair dye is my go-to vivid dyes, they are amazing, all except for the pink. DON’T BUY THE PINK. Seriously, I have no idea why they are all amazing and that one color is such a dud but whatever.

I’ve been doing vivids for over six years now and I have always used Pravana. I was absolutely bummed when they discontinued the Locked-In line because when you are doing multiple colors they can bleed together and the Locked-In prevented that and it was amazing.

I really wish Pravana would bring it back because I know I’m not the only one who appreciated it. Unfortunately I did try the crystal colors and they were absolutely horrible, they left spots that were completely untouched and I had to completely redo my entire head.

The regular vivids are amazeballs though and I will continue to use them.
