20 Best Cat Litter For Allergic Cats (2023 Updated)

I recently adopted a very geriatric cat (19 y/o) and I had provided the lightweight clay litter that I have for all my cats. The transition was hard on her, and she got sick. That wasn’t unexpected, but then there was litter box avoidance, that didn’t happen before she got sick.

Since she might have associated the litter and the litter box with being sick, I decided to completely change both the boxes and the litter type. I tried this, and was skeptical of what the box said about long lasting and hard clumping.

I was wrong, and the box was right. She will sort of drill a hole in the litter when she urinates, and the wood clumps very hard around the area, but not to the litter box. So I scoop it up, and have to shake and bounce it around a bit to let the free flowing litter sift out and then remove the clump.

And the clump stays hard. And I don’t have to put in a 4″ layer of litter in the box either. So for two litter pans, I get several months out of a box. I decided to change another box to this litter, and one of my cats uses it to urinate in, and chooses the same spot each time.

So that box has a deeper layer, and each day I wind up removing about a baseball sized clump of litter, and it doesn’t break apart on shaking the scoop. And for her, I decided to see if she would accept the wood litter after discovering one of her back paws heavily encrusted with clay litter that she must have stepped on when it was wet.

If the cat should happen to urinate against the side, it will look gummy, but it scoops out cleanly. Yes, there is some tracking, but at least it is not crunchy if stepped upon, and there seems to be less adherence to my long haired cat that uses it to urinate in.

(I only have two cats who use that liter). The rest use the clay litter, although I intend to change several more to the Okocat litter. And it clearly is less dusty than the clay litter which is advertised as ‘dust free’.

So of the 7 litter boxes provided, three are with the Okocat litter. Since my geriatric cat had been declawed, I chose the soft litter variety. None of my other cats are declawed, nor would I ever do that.

But how many people seek to adopt a 19 y/o cat? So her stay at the shelter was short.

I have a real serious love/hate relationship with this litter. We have three cats and one of them has recently started having unacceptable bathroom habits for some reason. He has decided that he is going to pee and poop on the floor or on our hot tub cover.

Now this is outside of our home in our screen enclosure which is good but not something we want to put up with of course. We have two ridiculously expensive Litter Robots with clumping clay litter that he was using without problem until recently.

My wife found this litter on clearance at a local pet store and I decided to try to see if I could get our problem cat to use it. To my great pleasure and surprise, I found he liked it and started to regularly use a new litter box with this litter and not the hot tub or floor.

The other cats seem to like it too. So I have a new litter box outside in the screen enclosure but that will soon have to end as Florida’s rainy season and ultra humidity approaches. Now Litter Robot claims you can use this litter in their machine by limiting it to 7 1/2 cups and letting the waste sit for an hour and then manually cycling it.

Well it’s just not true and then why would I use a Litter Robot that way anyway? This litter will not easily go through the screen and you end up wasting half of it every time it cycles. Just not usable in the Litter Robot especially if you have more than one cat.

Also on the negative side, this stuff tracks everywhere. It makes a huge mess and you need to clean up constantly around the boxes. So we have a litter that my problem cat will use instead of urinating and defalcating in unacceptable places.

That’s a big big plus. The stuff makes a mess and can’t be used in the Litter Robot which are two big negatives. The premise is great and I appreciate the basic concept. It actually scoops pretty well keeping the urine intact and encasing the poop which is good.

It is also flushable and doesn’t smell bad which are both great assets. So what’s the final verdict? Well I’m not giving up I have been experimenting with different mixtures of 70% ococat and 30% regular clay litter to give him the attraction of the wood litter but adding just enough weight to pull the litter through the Litter Robot screen when it cycles.

So this could be the answer to all of my problems or this experiment may be a total bust. Hopefully this will help me come up with a solution. We will see.

I’m on my second 10lb box and I love this litter so much. I’ve tried Dr. Elsey’s, Arm&Hammer pine pellets (non-clumping), and some unscented non-clumping clay litter that the city shelter was using. Okocat is great in clumping, tracking is pretty much the same as other clumping clay litter (maybe travels a little further because it is lighter), odor control is on par with other wood litters, it’s lightweight, and above all, eco-friendly! Dr.

Elsey’s was great at clumping but each bag of litter seemed to weigh a ton and didn’t even last that long. Pine pellets are great in theory but when it comes to day-to-day operation, I hated the strong pine smell and I found out I actually preferred clumping litter.

Pine pellets tracked the least but they’re also the roughest on cat paws. My cat, Goose, had no objections to okocat when transitioning him from pine pellet and cleanup is straightforward. I sweep the tracked out litter 1-2x daily (because I like clean floors) and it’s just a 5 minute ordeal with a small dustpan.

Scooping 2x daily takes less than 2 min. I change the litter every 2-3 weeks, when I can see more sawdust in the litterbox than I like to see. A 10lb box will last me about 2-3 months (1 cat).

I had been buying my cat litter from another merchant. They have discontinued the item that I liked. After looking around, I found the cat litter that I liked, in the size I wanted, and that it could be delivered.

The problem is that when I opened the box, I found that the cap had come off of one of the jugs of cat litter, thus filling the box with cat litter. I was not happy. The other source that I purchased from would put a large piece of tape over the cap so that this could not happen.

I contacted Walmart to get a replacement or a refund, and was told that I would either have to package up the item with labels and bring the package to Fed Ex or arrange for a pick up. If I could, or wanted to do all that, I would go to the store and buy it myself.

So as I would give the cat litter a 5 star, I am only going to give this item a 3 star due to the damaged package that I received.

if I could give this 4 1/2 stars I would. I absolutely can NOT STAND the scent of traditional clay litter, especially once it’s been used. I used to loathe scooping the litter box because of the smell which would only make it worse when I finally had to scoop it, and I’m sure my baby nico hated it as well.

my roommate uses this litter for their cat and highly recommended it, and when I finally ran out of the A&H litter we were using, I decided to try it out. I’m SO glad I did. the texture is pretty similar to traditional litter but the scent of the litter by itself is very minimal, I don’t have the nasty dust flying up in my face when I top the box off (there is a little bit but not nearly as much as with clay ones) AND I can just flush the waste down the toilet?? it’s incredible.

while I don’t personally smell anything when my boy pees on it, I will say it essentially does nothing for concealing solid waste smells. but I hardly care about that when I can now just take the litter box to the bathroom and flush his bombs down the toilet instead of having to put them in a single use plastic bag and then walk them all the way to the dumpster.

there’s also usually litter on the floor around the box after a few days, but I think my boy is just messy lol. bottom line, there are some cons to this litter but if you’re like me and hate the scent of traditional cat litter, they are easily outweighed by the fact that you can flush the litter and that the litter box won’t smell like a litter box.

I really wanted to love this litter. But it’s awful. Full disclosure, I bought it bc it came with a promotional free bag of cat food. I didn’t realize it was corn. At first I was delighted because it was rather lightweight, you do indeed use less volume wise than other litters, it was completely dust free and smelled so nice.

Couple that with its biodegradable feature and that it’s easy on furr babies’ respiratory systems, and it could have been perfect. But then, my cats started to use it. The clumping is very poor (even mixed with other clay clumping litter,) and you have to be very careful scooping it out or it will disintegrate back into your clean litter and this a bad feature bc its odor control is non existent.

In fact imo, it amplifies the ammonia smell or urine. So unless you use it in a litter box that’s outside or in a well ventilated area the smell is awful. My house smelled like wet saw dust, sauerkraut mixed with urine for days.

I will never buy this again. When I get a hankering for trying a litter that’s on sale- I need to remind myself of the brands that I do indeed love best (chewy’s Frisco, Scoop Away and Arm and Hammer’s clumping varieties,) before I choose the cheap stuff.

I have 13 cats, don’t judge, lol. I have rescued many strays over the years and recently a pregnant mama who gifted me 3 kittens. So it’s fair to say I go through enormous amounts of litter! I have tried every brand under the sun.

I also have two cats with serious respiratory issues so low dust is very important. When I was selected to receive this sample I was intrigued, but very skeptical. Having only ever been devoted to traditional non-clumping clay litter, I didn’t know what to make of this brand.

I decided to use it for the litter box that my respiratory compromised kitties use. I notice right away that there was little to no dust at all. The litter clumped quickly and solidified the urine really well.

I also notice that a lot less of the litter ended up outside the box as well. I had 4 cats using this box and I had to only change it once during the week. Which is awesome, as I usually change it every other day with the traditional clay litter.

I also was able to use a lot less, compared to the non-clumping traditional litter. It did well with odor control but make sure you scoop all of the clumps completely to avoid any residual urine smell, as this litter is not scented.

I am going to try to keep using this brand for my respiratory compromised cats because it’s truly dust free, but for the other boxes which have up to 9 users a day, I will most likely stay with clay for cost effectiveness.

It is no longer a good product. It used to be a great product, clumping very quickly and forming a very tight clump (regarding urine). Starting several months ago (June 2022 or earlier), something changed – it no longer clumps as tightly nor as quickly.

When you try to scoop up the urine, the clump breaks apart leaving small pieces – including pieces that pass through the scooper. Also, because it doesn’t clump as quickly, the urine can make its way to the bottom of the litter pan where it forms a sticky clump that is cumbersome to scrape out and remove.

Reviews of this product on the websites of the major “big box stores” are full of these same comments. While many people rate the product highly – many people are also complaining that the litter doesn’t clump as well or as quickly – exactly what we’ve experienced.

We placed a call to Purina’s customer service department and provided all the information they requested. The response was that “there has been no change to the product or its ingredients”. That being said, we stand by our statement and observations – “something” changed – and not for the better.

Considering the high price of this product, it is a big disappointment – and has forced us to try and find a better product. Too bad – this was a “10”, now it’s a “2”.

I gave this 2 stars because it is probably as good as most lightweight litters. I have 6 cats and transitioned to this from pine pellet litter, due to arthritis, the light weight and no need to sift pellets.

I thought this would be easier, but it was not at all! The first thing noticed was the PROFOUND scent for this type. I thought I had bought before and that it was lightly scented or no scent, but I was mistaken.

I had to buy the unscented kind and mix with it. The second thing I hated about this product was that within a couple of hours the entire room was coated as if someone threw sand everywhere from the tracking.

There was also a terrible coat of dust on everything. I clean and sweep this room daily, as well as scooping usually twice a day. I am used to clean floors and furniture in the room the cats use for the litter boxes, but this was impossible with this litter.

I just had to wait until this was all gone and do a thorough cleaning. Lastly, once used, this litter is no longer light weight at all. I am back to the pine pellets, but replacing every couple of days rather than sifting the pellets.

This is so much better for us. Poo does stink, but I scoop that and wa-la, I sweep up a few pellets and clean and happy! This was a large chore and extra expense that we did not need right now – lesson learned.

I used Purina Tidy Cat 24/7 for seven years, it was always a great product. until recently! Instead of clumping? It left countless crumbles vs 1-2 clumps, huge amounts of dust and my cat tracked it literally all over the house.

The room with the litter box was constantly covered in thick dust and needed to be wiped down continually. I found myself buying it more and more often, which at almost $18 for 35lb tub a pop was getting ridiculous for one cat.

Finally, I read lots of bad reviews about the formula changing and identical problems cat owners were having. Fast forward. after I determined there was nothing wrong with my cat (which I was worried, why all the sudden was cleaning the box such a mess and hassle?), I found this Arm & Hammer product.

At first I mixed it with the remaining Tidy Cat I had to get him used to it for a short while, Now it only takes 5 minutes vs. the 15 or more with the TC brand!! It was beyond aggravating and time consuming.

There is a minor fragrance, but it’s not very noticeable (and I have a nose like a bloodhound, so this is saying something), cat doesn’t seem to mind it. I clean his box 1-2x a day, so odor has never been an issue for us.

I am so relieved to find this brand! Clean up is not a nasty, muddy mess with countless tiny icky pieces to deal with, meaning the entire box stays cleaner longer and I spend a lot less money on litter.

Taking 3-5 minutes to clean up is amazing and no thick layer of dust on everything, THANK YOU ARM & HAMMER!.

I love this litter but can’t find it in my closest store. When I do end up finding it, it is way too expensive for the smaller boxes. So I was really happy to find how much cheaper it was on Chewy! and having it delivered to my house is just great.

The litter does a great job of keeping odors at bay, and it lasts a long time before having to change it out (I’d say somewhere around 1x per month for my 2 cats). The Arm & Hammer with the odor blasters is the best Arm & Hammer litter I’ve found.

I also use the Arm & Hammer Baking Soda Deodorizer with it and it just smells like laundry! I hardly ever smell anything at all until it’s time to change the litter completely. This time I am trying the Double Duty baking soda so I’ll probably do a review on that once I use it.

I’m still waiting on 3 items to arrive (2 litter boxes and a litter mat). I know how heavy these boxes can be so I understand that the delivery person (whom I know is probably not associated with Chewy) could not bring the boxes all the way to my door.

I didn’t mind going down and unboxing things in my driveway but one of the boxes of litter had a slight leak or tear on the top by the handle; there was some small spillage of litter that came out the top.

I know this is almost impossible to prevent but I’m hoping doesn’t happen again because I love this litter and don’t want a single grain wasted! Haha. Overall very happy to receive most of my items within 2 days of ordering.

As we all know cat wee stinks and well is dangerous. This stuff is amazing! I’ve used cheaper alternatives and nothing comes close the stuff you cannot smell a thing and my little fat cat loves it too.

She is a house cat and we change the litter everyday and even when emptying it does not smell. It even works and Tom cats wee and we all know what that smells like.

I feel like I did some intense, grueling research to find a litter that was primarily dust free AND also provided odor control. I used to use a big name brand that is sold in every store but I would always have a two inch thick layer of dust at any given time, no matter how many times I cleaned.

Sasha would do his business and then there would be dust everywhere. I was desperate for something that worked and I bought this after reading reviews (I always go to the 1 star first to see what people don’t like) and I felt like this could be good, so I bought it and love it!!! I’ve been using it for about 5 months now and I’m so happy I decided to take a leap of faith and try it!! The granules are smaller than most other litters so there is never any stuck in his fur and the only thing that gets tracked is what he kicks out of his box (he is an aggressive digger)!!! There has not been any problem with odor, either.

We try to clean his box 2-3 times a day, but even on the rare days it’s only gotten cleaned once, there still was no odor. I very highly recommend this litter to everyone!! We are all so much happier, especially Sasha, and that’s the most important part!!!.

Really expensive cat litter. But I’ve tried around 7-8 different ones and they’re all extremely dusty or scented. My cat has asthma and I’m convinced it was another litter I bought here that did it. Companies need to stop putting fragrances in their litters and they need to mean it when they say dust free.

Our pets are getting sick! This litter is truly unscented and dust free so I’ll stick with it for the rest of their lives. Worth it to see my cats breathing properly again. Unfortunately now one needs an inhaler the rest of his life but switching to this litter will help in a big way.

Just glad I finally found something that means what it says on the bag.

After the last litter I was using got progressively more dusty, I switched to this. Tried another Sanicat a while back in the box and liked it but the box wasn’t shipping worthy and made a mess. The bag is a big improvement.

Litter boxes are in my office so am super vigilant about dust. This is the least dusty litter I’ve found—and we’ve tried a lot! After two weeks with this litter + an air purifier, there is still no dust on the shelves or my desk.

It does track a bit but I can live with it.
