A cargo bar is a device that helps to secure cargo in the bed of a truck. It typically consists of a metal bar that is attached to the side walls of the truck bed and extends across the width of the bed.
Cargo bars are used to keep cargo from shifting during transport and can be particularly useful when transporting large or heavy items.

I purchased 2 of these ratcheting cargo bars. Both function excellent, and are very sturdy/strong. I read some of the negative reviews that suggested these are weak and flimsy, and because of those reviews, I almost didn’t purchase.
But wow, I’m glad I did now. I have really ratcheted these down very tight, in the bed of my truck, and they hold extremely well, don’t flex under pressure, and with the ratcheting feature, they are quick and easy to install and remove, unlike the screw/twist type which I used prior.
This cargo bar works great when used for what it is intended. I put two in the rear portion of my pickup bed and it keeps all things from sliding forward keeping them in reach. When not in use, they collapse and can easily be stored in the bed with out taking up any room.
I highly recommend these to any pick-up truck owner.

For a fully customized bed-organization system for worry-free transport, pair the Cargo Stabilizer Bar with StabiLoad Divider Bar Item #4017, NetWerks Cargo Bag Item #4021 or NetWerks BedBag Item #4022.
I bought this stabilizer bar for the strength and am not dissapointed but it was more than I needed. It is well built and very strong but it is also heavy. I find it awkward to set it in place. I have a Toyota Tacoma with a composite bed.
When you set this bar in place and lock it you can easily apply more pressure on the sides of the bed than I believe are recommended. So, you have to play around the bar position before folding over the closure handle to lock it in place.
In this respect, a ratcheting stabilizer bar would be easier. So, very strong but not easy to set in place with composite truck bed.
The HitchMate Cargo Stabilizer Bar is heavy duty quality. It can be used for all types of loads and works great for industrial applications. I would like to see them make another version for lighter applications.
Something I could use for smaller cargo. This unit can sometimes be a bit too heavy duty for holding smaller items near the tailgate and from sliding to the back of the truck bed. Otherwise, this stabilizer bar is absolutely great value and functionality for the price.
The Elevate Outdoor Adjustable Cargo Bar fits SUV and pickup truck beds 46 inch to 61 inch and ratchets into place to help prevent gear from sliding around during transportation. The heavy duty ratchet mechanism will not bend and will stay locked in place once setup.
Pivoting rubber ends ensure a firm, non-sliding grip.
Before purchasing the cargo bar for my delivery vehicle I was constantly having to hit the brakes quickly to prevent an accident. In turn everything in the vehicle would end up in the front with me and not gently either.
The cargo bar is ea I tsy to set up and easy to remove. It just makes things easier all the way around. I like it and it works great.
Good strong bed bar. Perfect for keeping things In place in the bed of your truck. We have service body trucks and these bars make things way easier. You can also use this in a regular truck bed we swap them around from truck to truck all the time.

Keeper adjustable cargo bars are ideal for keeping your belongings in place in a wide range of cars vans and trucks.
Perfect for my use. Was going to get something that attached to my bed rails but could not bring myself to spend hundred of dollars for a divider. This will keep items from sliding around on the slippery composite bed.
Will probably buy another to use. A couple of twist of the road and I can move it to whatever place I need it.
The bar was a tad short for a 2021 GMC Sierra truck box. It would only fit between the wheel wells. I like the idea of this, but wish it was about 5 inches longer. I will have to modify it to make it work.
The HitchMate Cargo Stabilizer Bar is one of the strongest cargo bars available on the market. It extends from 59″ to 73″ to fit a wide variety of full size truck bed widths. This bar is easy to adjust and features a heavy duty ratcheting system which adjusts and expands.
The HitchMate Cargo Stabilizer Bar is ideal for cross-town trips or longer road trips at highway speed. The Cargo Divider Bar easily fits onto the Cargo Stabilizer Bar with 2 set screws (included). Now your cargo will not slide from one side to the other with the Cargo Divider Bar in place.
Designed for the HitchMate Cargo Bars Heininger Automotive HitchMate NetWerks Cargo Bag includes convenient innovative cinches that will protect your cargo. This Cargo Bag offers both comfort and function, which is designed to help in hauling camping cargo, sports gear or groceries during travel and is highly dependable.
I’ve been through two other cargo bars in the last five years and neither has held up much longer than two years. This one, I think, will last me through my next couple of trucks. The bar is much heavier then either of its predecessors and, when locked in place, doesn’t move a bit.
Slightly harder to install than the others ( you have to approximate the proper width before closing the ratcheting bar), the heavy bar and large feet provide a really firm barrier for cargo of any size.
Used in combination with the divider bar, any item that will fit in the bed can be completely immobilized. If you have small items to put in the bed, add the cargo bag. It will hold the little stuff you like to toss back there.
This is possibly the most useful thing I’ve ever added to my truck. If you haven’t figured it out yet, I love this one!.
The HitchMate Cargo Bar and StabiLoad are of steel construction. The Cargo Bar has large hard-rubber pads on the ends to prevent slippage. The Cargo Bar is therefore somewhat heavy, but can retain substantial loads.
Used for numerous trips in a recent household move, we had no slippage problems with any furniture, even very heavy and/or tall. Note that the bars need to be securely snugged against the load to prevent movement, but that is only a matter of positioning, which is easy since the Cargo Bar releases and tightens simply.
(The Cargo Bar latches closed but does not have a lock. A U-type bike lock over the lever can lock it in place. ) The Bed Net is also substantially made for heavy-duty use, rather than simple string-nylon netting.
To me, this package earns its “Commercial Grade” carton note. These products are sure to get years of service, hauling hay, etc. , for the family horses and sports gear for all.
Great product in my 2016 Silverado. Feels like it should be a little longer now that I put it in a 2022 GMC Sierra. I think the inside of the truck beds have gotten slightly wider. Still works well. I would totally recommend buying.
The next generation of sport bars is here with the Sport Bar 3. 0! It retains the popular classic sport bar look with an added modern twist. Taking it a step further, the Sport Bar 3. 0 can be used in conjunction with most bed covers and has an option for a power-actuated light mount so lights can be hidden away when not in use.
Add style to your pickup truck with Go Rhino’s Sport Bar 2. 0. It’s a universal fit sport bar available for full size pickup trucks.
I had a 2020 chevy colorado. Intsallation was quite difficult. Its very difficult to put the the actual rack together smoothly. Putting the actual rack onto the truck was extremely difficult. My bed is boxes in a few inches right before the cab.
I had to really embrace my inner MacGyver to get that rack bolted down securely. If you are installing this yourself and are not overly confident i would not recommend.
The Yakima OverHaul HD truck rack is an ultra-functional rack that makes hauling all the gear for a weekend adventure easy. Leveraging Yakima’s new HD Bars for a 500-lb. on-road carrying capacity, and paired with their 300-lb.
Off-Road Rating, the OverHaul HD truck rack is the ideal foundation for heavy loads. Pair with a set of Yakima HD Bars (Item #62659. 01), sold separately, allowing you to choose the crossbar length that works best for your application.
Compatible with all Yakima mounts to carry kayaks, surfboards, SUPs, bikes, rooftop tents and more. Integrated tie-down points make it easy to secure any load. Infinitely adjustable height from 19-30″, to create custom set-ups for maximum utility and versatility.
T-slot attachments let you add gear mounts and accessories quickly and easily. Designed and tested for all common truck beds using the BedGrip clamp design, including tracked beds, and select tonneau covers.
Built to last with engineered aluminum construction and a durable powder coat finish. Includes integrated SKS (Same Key System) locks to secure the rack system to the truck bed. All mounting hardware is included for easy installation.
The OverHaul HD rack is a solidly built rack. YES, you will also need HD cross bars (they come in 3 lengths) and the features tab DOES indeed state this. I am using the longest available HD bars on my 2010 Tundra.
I can fit two sets of Thule Hullivators and a Thule Dock Glide mount up there. I have zero concerns that the rack system wouldn’t be able to support it. For Toyota and Nissan trucks you will need a bed adapter.
It stinks that it is an extra add on but it is what it is. Be sure to order them together. I can easily dismount the rack and leave the baseplates on during the winter months. I can take off both racks in about 3 minutes.
Hoping to add a rack mounted tent next year. Can’t wait for more adventures. This is the kind of rack that you go to the junkyard to reclaim if you truck gets totaled. It’s built that solid.
The bad: 1. I’m not sure why the call it a “Truck Rack” and have a picture of a truck rack because that’s not what it is. The Cross Bars (not Side Bars) to complete the rack make it much more expensive.
2. The locks are really just to keep honest people honest, to be honest, and I don’t know why they give you two instead of four when you pay SUCH a price for these things. That being said, The Good: They do look really cool, better than most other racks I’ve seen, and I love the black powder coating.
Makes my black Chevy Colorado look awesome and ready for adventures. I also like how quick and easy it is to take the racks on and off the bed if you don’t need them on. (but that also worries me a little) The adjustable height is also really useful; I just wish it was easier to adjust.
The Auto-Extending Ratcheting Truck Cargo Bar adjusts from 40″ to 70″. Suitable for cargo organization, a tie-down area, and for keeping cargo from sliding around in the truck bed. The adjustable length pickup cargo bar features an easy to use ergonomic spring-loaded ratchet with high quality rivet fastener assembly.
Push-button operation automatically extends cargo bar into place, then simply ratchet to tighten. two Pivoting rubber ends each measure 3. 125″ L by 2. 375″ W by 0. 438″ H and are designed to grip the pickup truck bed rails to reduce shifting or bar slipping during use.
The rubber ends are pre-drilled with four holes for optional permanent mounting. Made with weather resistant 1″ D speckle casing and a 0. 875″ chrome coated extension.
Feels flimsy. Broke a piece off already. The ratchet function is kind of cumbersome. It holds there when setup and will do it’s intended purpose, but I’m sure there is better out there where money would be better spent.
The ratcheting device works great! Very easy to operate with one person. Maintains all my cargo to the front or to the back, large or small items, wherever I place the Bar. I needed to be able to keep cargo to the left or right in the truck bed and the cargo bar reaches from the cab to the tailgate and locks in place.
I purchased this bar because of the ratchet capabilities. It works great in my pickup box to keep things from sliding around and within reach. The price of this item is better than I have found elsewhere.
Universal Truck Stop Adjustable Cargo Bar without Storage Net (80451-00) by Covercraft. 48″ to 75″ Adjustable Length. Tired of those boxes and buckets sliding around your truck bed? Don’t want to hear that banging noise sounding like someone’s hitting a roasting pan? Then it’s time to go with this extremely useful adjustable cargo bar that creates an impassable barrier for your stuff and keeps it securely in place.
I bought (2), one without the net for my Chevy Silverado truck and one with the net for my wife’s Honda Pilot SUV. Both work well and are a great value. My wife loves the cargo bar with the net to securely hold grocery bags and other shopping bags – to prevent the bags, milk cartons, etc.
, from rolling around within the cargo space. They are well made and for the price, you cannot go wrong. They do exactly what they are designed to do (and adjusting their size is very easy).
With each of our trucks, the sides vary and finding a sweet spot is difficult. my wife can’t install these. Guess you need to figuire out the “trick” first. Once installed, they work great. You need to take 10 minutes to install them each time you need them.
Looked at alot of other ways to go, but this was my best option. If I wanted to spend $300. 00 to $400. 00 for some other way to set up the bed of my truck. These are the best band for the buck. I can move them around anywhere I want.

My 2002 sierra had a slot for a two by 4 to divide the bed for holding stuff towards the back of the bed. My 2017 Silverado has the slot but the bed curves in at the bottom making the two by 4 idea not work.
This small-sized load lock works great for holding items (groceries) in place and takes 5 seconds to remove and or install, when loading larger stuff in the bed Highly recommended.
If your like me and have longer beach fishing rods you know the Gladiator bed is to short. I bought this and attached 2″pvc pipe with pipe clamps. It tips if you don’t use the front of the bed as a stop but it works none the less.
Load cargo and keep it in place with this versatile ratcheting cargo bar. The cargo bar keeps cargo from shifting in pickup trucks, minivans, station wagons or hatchbacks. The ratcheting adjustment extends from 40 in.
to 70 in. to fit your vehicle. Nonmarring grip pads keep the cargo bar from slipping.
Bought this Ratcheting Cargo Bar to keep items in place in the back of my Truck and Old K-5 Blazer from rolling and shifting around. I use it to hold down 5 Gallon Water Jugs and other similar items.
It works good. quick On-and-Off application. Just make certain that your Ratchet Points are Sturdy Steel Panels of vehicle. not Plastic Panel Covers. Ratchet Bar is strong enough to collapse Plastic Panels.
The Ratchet Bar collapses down to a manageable size to store under the seat when not in use. I have even used it to support Hoods and Tailgate Lifts on cars where the Hydraulic Struts were not working.
My only Negative is that if you leave it out in the elements, it will oxidize quickly. I was able to catch it in time and wipe it down with WD-40 to remove the oxidation. Wipe it dry after exposed to rain or moisture.
I keep it inside the truck when not in use. Not as Heavy Duty as the Ratcheting Bars sold at the Local Truck Stop, but at 1/4 the price. It does the job.
Not as sturdy as I would like to have but for the price and what it does offer, it’s with it. If something is too have or happens to gain movent or motion it could possibly break the unit. However that’s the whole point is to pin objects tight so they don’t move during transport.
I would give 4 stars for that. But I used mine for different use. I placed two in my truck splitting the different of the bed(sort of), with one to the front side of the wheel well and one to the back of i.
I placed 1/2 way up the bed essentially creating a bi-level rack to lay shovels, brooms and things long but not beyond bed length, so I can keep my fold up ladder below and now I can slide it in and out without fighting a bunch of long handle tools.
See pic with the green highlighting the rachet bars.
Bought this for a Toyota Tacoma to try out since it was on sale. If all went well, I would buy another for a full size truck bed. I was used to larger ratchet bars used for 56 foot delivery trailers that are pulled by diesels therefore took me a little playing around with to learn the features and controls.
They’re slightly different than a trucker’s ratchet bar. This one is slid into place at the desired length/place, the handle/lever is set to the middle section for the ratcheting adjustment of about 1 or 2 clicks before you have to reset the lever back to the middle, then when it is set, the lever is placed toward the grey rod side for stowage (out of the way).
When the rod is to be released, the lever is placed 180-degrees from stowage position (silver side) and the rod releases with force. In both stowage and release positions, there is a need to utilize a locking tab type that stays well in place.
The rubber square feet rotate to accomodate any direction you need to fit in different shaped truck beds/areas. I would recommend this bar for areas where there are no sensitive wiring, controls, sensors, storage compartments usually found behind plastic bed liners or in suv hatches.
Standard steel and sprayed-on bedliners are good and strong enough I think. Now for the ugly, FULL SIZED TRUCK BEDS. The Tacoma truck bed is smaller, therefore not much length is required and the flex of the rod is minimal at about 3/4″ movement.
However, when I placed it across a 97′ GMC K2500 4×4 and 2004 Ford F-350 truck bed, the rod flexed about 2″. The bar was not set between the wheel wells (approx 4 feet across), it was set farthest across the bed WALL that was about 68 inches.
It did hold but concerns me. In a full sized bed. will it hold groceries, a gallon of milk, a small generator, a chainsaw, a wheelbarrow, 1-gallon paint cans? Yeah it would. As for heavier items, I would try something else like one from a truck stop.
For the purpose of a Toyota Tacoma, this bar works very well. Happy purchase.
Designed to stop large items from resting directly on your tailgate, the Apex Universal Truck Bed Rear Bar is a smart addition for anyone hauling ladders and similar unwieldly items. Made from power-coated steel, it comes with two top brackets to support and tie-down your load.
This rear bar is designed to provide a universal fit for most truck makes and models, and the width can be adjusted from 65 inches to 69. 5 inches. For trucks with stake pocket holes, installation is easy and drill-free.
These are NOT for mid sized trucks, i. e. , Chevy Colorado, but, since I have one, I needed to make it work. The stake pocket connectors may or may not be good for whatever your application. All is not lost though.
Get some 3/8 x 8″ bolts, pull your tail lights, and go in from the bottom of the stake pocket. Push the bolt up through, set the mounting bracket on top, install the washer, lock washer, and nut, and you’re done.
Reinstall the tail lights. Now because this is for a full sized truck, you’ll need to cut a section off the cross bar, then line it all up, mark for a mounting hole, and drill that out. Total time to modify and install, about 90 minutes.
Like they say, it’s not hard, but time consuming. There’s not a lot of stake pocket mounted racks out there, and to me, this one seemed like it fits the bill very nicely. Great product, and a LOT heavier than it looks in the pictures.
The bar itself is great. The hardware to attach it to the truck does not work it is way to short. Customer service hung up on me twice without even talking with me. I had to buy new hardware to get this to work.
Safely secure and tie down cargo in a pickup truck bed with this universal cargo bar Fits any truck bed from 40″ to 70″ W Pivoting, grooved rubber ends grip the truck bed to prevent bar slipping and cargo shifting Spring-loaded adjustable ratchet with an ergonomic handle Durable, powder-coated steel construction Keep your truck bed cargo organized and secured in place with the Apex Adjustable Pickup Truck Cargo Bar.
The adjustable bar has grooved rubber ends to grip the truck bed and an easy-to-use ratchet to lock the bar tightly in place. The cargo bar also works great as an extra tie-down area and includes pre-drilled holes for optional permanent mounting.
Fits all pickup truck beds from 40″ to 70″ wide. Grips to the pickup truck bed with two 2. 25″ wide by 3″ long by 3/8″ thick grooved rubber ends designed to prevent the cargo bar from slipping inadvertently and potentially causing cargo shifting.
Each rubber end pivots in a variety of positions for adapting to most surface angles.
The purpose of this product is to span the interior width of a pickup truck bed. It expands to 70″, but the interior width of my 2020 Chevy Silverado is 72″. Why would you design and sell a pickup truck cargo bar that won’t span the width of a standard pickup? Had to use wood blocks on either side to make it work.
This works pretty well to extend, but VERY hard to retract. I have to smack it to dislodge from spanning my bed. I urge caution. Everything else I got- Full size rack, Cargo net, wheel step up is very good.
I love this cargo bar. The quality is very good and the adjustability options are endless. Stays where you place it to hold your items in place without slipping or giving away like some others on the market.
The HitchMate Cargo Stabilizer Bar is one of the strongest cargo bars available on the market. It extends from 50 to 65 to fit a wide variety of compact truck bed widths. This bar is easy to adjust and features a heavy duty ratcheting system which adjusts and expands.
The HitchMate Cargo Stabilizer Bar is ideal for cross-town trips or longer road trips at highway speed.
The bar is quite sturdy and locks into position well. It does tend to force the inner bed walls out somewhat when locking it into position. Be aware that the small separator bar shown in the photos (the bar between the shop-vac and the trash barrel in the photo) does NOT come with the stabilizer bar, you must purchase that separately.
This was a disappointment to me, as several of the advertising photos showed that additional bar, and NOWHERE was that fact ever mentioned. I purchased believing that I would get that, and am disappointed it was not included.
Not quite a ‘bait-and-switch’, but the photos did lead me on thinking I would get that.

Reviews From Real Customers
Great device. The tailgate on my truck doesn’t latch anymore and I’ve been moving. So as to not have boxes or totes slam against it n potentially dump out all over highway I use this bar to secure the load in bed of the truck.
If you need load bars, these work well. I built up 6′ tall wooden walls in my truck and one of these works great. to hold stuff back and or stacked up. If I try and use more than one, the wall of my truck bed buckles enough that it pops the first one loose.
This is not the bar’s fault, it is my truck, but be aware if it if you plan on using more than one load bar at a time. Buy two to start with instead of 4 like I did.
Keeper Ratcheting KargoBar expands from 40″ to 70″ in length for maximum versatility in meeting your transport and storage needs. These cargo bars are ruggedly constructed to ensure that they can withstand tough conditions and unexpected stresses.
Silver vein paint is “baked on” for increased durability, withstanding weather, resisting scratching and extending the life of the product. With large rubber grip pads, Keeper provides security and ease of use for efficient cargo management and organization.
Keeper adjustable cargo bars are ideal for keeping your belongings in place in a wide range of cars, vans, and trucks. Includes a 60″ x 24″ Storage Net that attaches to the bar with 2 spring clips for added storage.
The bar does it’s job well. Provides enough tension to hold most cargo items in place. Overall, construction is good but 2 minor changes would make it perfect. The default of the internal spring is to retract which can make placing the bar difficult.
The cargo net is held in by hair pin type clips that pull out easily. I changed them to eye bolt/wing nut to make it more secure.
It is just right for my light duty needs. It is ratcheted and somewhat hard to undo after installing but is still okay for the price I paid. Could have bought one twice the price but for what I use it for that would have been a waste.
Overall, it is not top of the line but I am satisfied with it.

Because I frequently need to secure large items, like appliances, for both long and short trips in the bed of my F250, the S-line Ratcheting Pickup/SUV Bar perfectly meets my requirements–and it’s so much quicker and easier than tiedowns and bungees.
The bar is sturdy even when fully extended and isgalvanized for weather resistance. The pivoting end pads grip the rails or bedwalls securely. The composite ratcheting/locking mechanism is easy to adjust and holds position firmly.
Once you have one, you’ll wonder how you ever got along without it!.
This cargo bar it the second of its kind that I have employed in transporting grocery product and bread trays on roller conveyors. This bar provides ample pressure and the pivoting shoes provide proper gripping surfaces to stabalize six foot wide loads with six foot of height.
I would recommend this holding bar to anyone needing restraints on product. I will purchase this bar again and again and again.
How many times have you put items in your pick-up bed that you didn’t want to slide around and said I’ll drive slow. but to your surprise something happened and you had to stop faster than what you wanted to and BAM! into the front of the bed it went.
Now I have a peace of mind knowing with my S line ratcheting pickup bar this won”t happen any more. Great Product.
This Black Horse Automotive ATLAS 4 inch diameter tube style Truck Bed Bar holds up to 150 pounds of cargo and holds light bar up to 50 inch length. It is made of powder coated steel and comes in black.
Let me start by stating that I’ve owned this for 2 years now. Not only is it clean looking but it’s also functional. The 500 lb rating for the basket is true. I had my truck loaded out with all sorts of gear enroute to Panama City Beach after Hurricane Michael destroyed it.
I also carry mountain bikes in the bed of my truck all the time. The bikes clear the bottom of the basket. Speaking of the basket, aside from using it to carry equipment my 8 year old son has used it several times as a shooting platform.
So overall a solid, well-made product at a good price. Highly recommend it!!.
Torn between 3 and 4 stars. Great looking product overall and relatively easy to assemble. Multiple complements from strangers and requests of who made it. I had to shave the washers that install the rail to the bed of the truck so they’d fit onto the bolt.
The welds dont look very professional. After maybe a month, noticed some rust washout residue. Hoping its not an issue. The lightbar mount doesn’t give much clearance over the truck’s roof. Would recommend watching the youtube video on installment.
This rack adds a great look to the Gladiator. It is a perfect platform for additional lighting and carrying my SUP and kayak with an additional hitchmount t-bar. It does allow for bed cover which I don’t have.
