Car top carriers without roof racks are typically made of a soft material, such as canvas or vinyl, and are attached to the vehicle’s roof with straps or hook-and-loop fasteners. These types of carriers are not as secure as those with roof racks, and are not recommended for carrying items that could be damaged by wind or rain.

This was absolutely awesome! It really did hold true to being waterproof! We used it for a trip from Illinois to South Carolina and Tennessee! We were in some pretty good downpours for a couple of days! Everything inside was kept dry! My best advice is to pack it on the ground first! But the downside of this is lifting it up onto your vehicle! So make sure you get help! And it did stay in place as long as the straps were tight, but for added peace of mind, we also used a couple of bungee straps!.
Carrier had durable zipper and straps. It was very spacious. It poured rain on us for a couple hours and everything stayed dry. It held on tight for our 18 hour round trip. Just a few problems. It was so big it was difficult for us fill up(recommended on instructions to prevent damage).
Heavier items need to go in front to keep wind from getting under it so it was difficult to maintain the aerodynamic shape. It conforms to the shape of you luggage(not structured at all). Finally, we noticed a few small holes rubbed into the bottom after we returned home(though it was an 18 hour round trip and we did not have a roof mat).
We will patch the holes and use as long as it’ll last. May purchase roof mat for next trip. Overall good price, good quality, car handled fine with it and definitely waterproof.
Bought this for a round road trip from Texas to Florida. Had no issues with using the straps to the door outer frame. Survived high winds and heavy rain for hours through a storm. I recommend reading the directions before use and tying strap slack to itself.
Explore places beyond the ordinary with our waterproof rooftop cargo carrier. You can have 15, 19 or 23 cubic feet of additional car topper storage on every trip. Most cars don’t have enough space to pack all the things you need without leaving some things behind.
Our roof rack bag makes that a thing of the past. Easy to install and fits any car, this car top carrier can go wherever the open road leads you.
Right out of the box, this product was perfect! The construction seemed strong, and the storage capacity is IMMENSE. The loops for the car are secure and easy to install. The whole bag was also easy to manage.
***The most THOUGHTFUL piece were the bungie-velcro wraps at the end of each of the tightening straps! Upkeep on straps can be annoying if you don’t know your knots, but these thoughtfully added bungie pieces allow you to velcro the excess straps to themselves.
I thought it was very clever! Good work!Sadly, the bag is not “novice”-proof. We packed it up and drove from Florida to Maine (average speed about 70miles per hour), and everything seemed perfect. There was no shifting or flapping sounds, and only the minor noticeable drag from the car’s shape being different.
HOWEVER, one of the straps had not been 100% tight enough in the front (though we had pulled it as tight as possible, we thought, we must have only tightened it 99%), so there was vibration created by the wind that was JUST enough to rub the tightening strap and part of the bag together.
During one of the stops, thank goodness I checked all the straps, because the friction had nearly cut through the tightening strap and DID cut a small whole in the bag itself! OH NO! So my bag is no longer 100% weather proof, unless there’s a way to fix the bag, and the one tightening strap must ALWAYS be tightened past the weak point, or it will break/won’t work.
Sad that this product has damage after only one trip. I can’t call it 100% manufacturer’s error, but I also feel like the instructions might have needed to warn about the potential for friction from vibrations.
Make sure all your straps lay 100% flat against the bag, so there’s no chance of vibrations. Make sure there is ABSOLUTELY ZERO chance that the wind can vibrate the straps even the smallest amount, or you’ll end up with damage like we did.
First off – the bag was attached to an ’18 Toyota Highlander, w/out a roof rack. The bag was rear facing (zippered opening to the back), and only 4 (although 6 were supplied) door hooks were needed. I also used two tie-down straps for two reasons: Peace of mind in case the bag ripped and also to help take the stress off of the weight/pressure/wind on the bags straps/stitching (everyone that had their bags ripped, probably didn’t use extra straps).
This bag also has channels along the top for that purpose. We drove from PA to NC in Aug 2021. About 7-8 hours of that trip was an absolute monsoon – I’ve never driven in harder rain. It was so much so that, the radio/cell phones were alerting to hurricane warnings.
Cars were pulled off the road. During that portion of the trip, the contents inside the bag remained bone dry. The bag didn’t move an inch (we have a sunroof so it was easy to see if there was an issue).
We also had no noise from the straps. On the way back, NC to PA (15 hour trip due to off/on traffic) – all clear roads and were driving 80-85 most of the way. Again, no problems with the bag moving, or making noise from the straps (not sure if the tie-downs helped with that).
Only thing I was bummed about, which is probably my mistake is that I thought this bag came with a padding to go underneath the bag to keep the car from getting scratched. My car was not scratched, but something to think about.
(Also, this bag holds a lot. We had 2 full size suite cases, 2 beach chairs, 2 beach umbrellas, 3 boogie boards, 5 beach towels, a large bag of beach toys, beach blanket, a full beach bag, and then a shopping bag of gifts).
We bought this for my daughter’s move to college. Everything came in a organized bag, and the instruction was easy to follow. After reading the reviews, I was a little apprehensive about attaching the tie-down hooks to my car windows, but I did not encounter any issues with my Honda CR-V.
During the drive, which was mostly on highways, the carrier did not shift in position on the car rooftop. Some of the reviews mentioned issues with water proofing of the carrier. When we got to the college town, there was a pretty bad thunderstorm, and lots of rain came down.
Wne I checked the carrier after the storm, the external surface of the carrier was pretty damp, and there was pooling of water in creases of the carrier (we did not pack the carrier full to the gill, so there were lots of places for creases where water could pool).
Inside the carrier was generally dry, except one area near the front of the carrier — I suspect that this may be due to water pooling near the zipper. Even then, the amount of water inside the carrier was minimal.
I double bagged everything we put inside, so there was no damage. Based on this, I would say that the water proofing of this carrier is reasonably good. It seems that at some point, a carrier with smaller capacity was available (we bought the 19 cubic feet version) — that probably would have been a better fit for our purpose, but I am overall happy with the one we bought.

Purchased for a 1800 mile road trip and couldn’t of done it without this baby. Another 1800 miles road trip coming up! We hauled three beach chairs plus a boat load of additional items. We drove through rain and wind (in the mountains) no issues.
No major sound noticeable. I was very surprised not to see more of these out on the open roads. The depth alone is key for travel, especially in a small suv with three people. Hubby said it was easy to install.
We actually placed it back on our car for local trips to the beach, it is that easy to load and unload beach items. Throw in the American Flag on the carrier and it is a major win. Highly recommend.
Great rooftop storage box. I ordered the 10 cubic ft size and was able to fit 2 carryon suitcases, a 4 person tent, air mattress, 2 life vests and a couple blankets in it. We drove 4 hours at highway speeds of 50-70 mph and had very little drag or noticeable noise from the unit.
Designed to fit full size cars, SUVs and vans that have existing roof bars Perfect for camping trips and travelling to sporting events Ideal for transporting flat boxes secured by a rope of bungee cord Product details Van Don’t let excess baggage cramp your style or your space the next time you and your friends set off on an epic road trip.
Throw that extra cargo on the roof with the Rola Vortex 2 Piece Roof Rack. Constructed from heavy duty steel and finished with a black powder coat, you can rest assured knowing that this roof basket can withstand the elements and resist getting scraped up.
Adjustable brackets allow easy installation on most vehicles and a weight capacity of 130 pounds means that you’ll have even more precious space inside. Stretch out and enjoy yourself a little more on your next road trip with the Rola Vortex 2 Piece Roof Rack.
I like this rack. It’s low profile for a basket and seems strong. However, there are known issues on the web about rust. The rack comes 2 two pieces. If you’re lucky, you get the newer version with rubber sleeves for the connecting tubes and rubber washers for the screws.
That does help, but you need to do more. I would get a can of Rustoeum truck bed liner spray. It’s the same stuff as they use on the outside of the basket. Spray it inside the tubes to coat it which can help prevent rusting from the inside out, which is the main cause of the rust on these baskets.
Then use black outdoor silicone caulk, like the type you’d use on home windows, etc. to seal all screw holes (including the wind deflector) and the 4 tube seems. Check all welds for any holes/ openings where water may get in.
It’s a simple east fix that can save you alot of headache later on.
I recently needed to purchase a roof basket for our 2017 Subaru Outback. After doing some research, I wanted to find a quality rack without breaking the bank. This rack certainly fits the bill! Surprisingly well made, solid construction, Easy assembly with good instructions! Looks great on the car! This rack can be purchased from many retailers, but I found Walmarts price to be the best.
Plus free store pick-up made this an easy purchase!.

Durable and Rugged ABS material is long-lasting and helps protects contents during transit. Easy-Grip Mounting assembles in moments and easily attaches the box to the rack. SecureLock ensures that all gear is locked and box is properly closed prior to driving.

I have one of these roof top carriers and have really enjoyed it. Works great on my Subaru WRX to carry extra camping gear. Recently I was locking the box as normal and the key broke off in the lock.
I had packed the gear to return home so I figured I’d just leave it locked until I got home and could deal with it then. Once home I was unable to get the key out and wound up having to tear the lock mechanism apart to get the box open.
I contacted Thule “support” to see about getting new parts to fix the lock. Took a week but then they replied with “here’s a link to buy a new key”. I wrote back to re-explain” my problem and they replied with “yeah we don’t sell any parts like that.
Thanks. ” So here’s the bottom line- if you break Thules crappy key in the lock you are on your own so be careful. Or buy a box from another company.
Bought this enroute to a recent camping trip where our car was packed to the gills. Despite what other reviews say, this is incredibly easy to install – guessing Thule recently updated the attachment mechanism.
You run four “claws” through slots on the inside of the box, which then clamp onto your bars. To tighten them, you simply turn a knob on the top of each claw inside the box. I’d say it took about 90 seconds total to install.
It’s also very lightweight and easy to get onto your roof. The box is only 12″ tall and is pretty narrow, but it held a duffle bag, old school sleeping bag, three synthetic-down bags, two sleeping pads, two kids’ backpacks, and an inflatable mattress.
You can adjust the box forward or backward to fit your car. When mounted all the way forward on a Subaru Outback, the hatch could open without hitting the box.
On the plus side: The box has good capacity and is easy to install and remove. On the minus side: The box is overly flexible, which makes it difficult to open as the lid twists if you do not push up exactly at the centre or with both hands, which is not always possible.
Also the lock is very poor quality in that the key is difficult to insert almost every time. Despite adding lock lubricant, the key is always hard to put in. When closing, it does not always align with the locking mechanism due to the previously mentioned flexing issue.
For the price I would expect something a bit more developed.
Premium roof rack cargo carrier from Direct Aftermarket provides convenient additional hauling capacity to your vehicle. Carrier is great for hauling many different types of cargo such as luggage, equipment, tools, coolers, or any other items.
Constructed of weather resistant epoxy powder coated tubular steel, this heavy duty hauler can hold up to 150 pounds and features metal bars as a base to support your cargo. The interior of the rack measures approximately 36 inches wide and 41 inches long and also features a 5 inch high railing with a lot of tie down spots to help keep your gear safely stowed.
Also included is a wind fairing plate along the front measuring approximately: 37 inches x 5-1/2 inches. Cargo rack can quickly and easily be removed when not needed. Cargo basket is easy to assemble and be done in just a few minutes.
Includes: cargo basket, assembly hardware, and instructions.
First, I want to point out the positives: – The rack performed its job well. I tied a cargo bag to it, attached it to the roof crossbars I installed on our Mazda3, and drove it from Virginia to Idaho.
– It was surprisingly quiet while doing this. – I have no doubts about its sturdiness. Negatives: – Assembly not entirely smooth. Instructions were printed at a very low resolution, making certain steps hard to see.
This isn’t a problem for the more straightforward steps, but the one involving the rubber rings on the wind guard on the front was difficult, and I’m not sure I did it correctly. Good enough, apparently.
– Some of the assembly was not confidence inspiring in terms of how well pieces fit together. – Attaching the carrier to the cross bars was difficult. The bars on the bottom of the basket are not evenly spaced, so the brackets the attach to it cannot be placed between each pair of bars, only certain ones.
(What was really frustrating was trying to force in the bracket between bars where it *almost* fit. ) Feels a bit like luck that it fits lthe crossbars as it does.
Step one was to fit the two pieces of the rack together. First problem. Holes didnt line up so I had to put a ratchet strap on it to pull the sides in together. Problem two. paint was very thin and even though I was worked on cardboard, the paint scuffed up.
Problem three, the crews that hold on the spoiler weren’t all there and after a trip to Lowes I just got stainless steel with locking nuts. Then I painted it with automotive bed liner. For the money, I guess it is OK but sure a pain.
Havent tried to put on the truck yet. more challenges to follow I am sure!.
I AM FEMALE, ALMOST 69. FORTUNATELY I HAVE TOOLS AND KNOW HOW TO USE THEM. NOT ALL THE PREDRILLED HOLES MATCHED UP TO WHERE YOU COULD GET PROVIDED SCREWS THROUGH. I HAD TO REDRILL TO MAKE IT USABLE. UNLESS YOU ALREADY HAVE TOOLS OR SOMEONE ELSE WHO DOES BEST NOT ORDER.

I got this the Pulse M off REI in summer of 2020 when there wasn’t anything to do since everywhere was in lock down on a memorial day weekend sale and love it. I drive a 2018 limited impreza hatchback with the subaru crossbars and it fits the car very well, and looks great.
It nearly goes the width of the top of the car and still looks streamlined – I wouldn’t suggest going with a cargo box any bigger than this for a similar sized vehicle. We have used this a lot for out of state road trips mainly on weekends and holidays with 2-4 people and it stores a lot more stuff than you would think.
Even trips to Costco, it comes in handy for those big bulky paper products. I store it for the winter as we aren’t traveling as much during that time. Great box, never had any issues with it and stores a ton of stuff to leave room inside the car for coolers, food, bags with electronics, etc.
This product is literally the biggest waste of money that I have ever spent. I have used my box twice and have owned it for 2 months and the key has broken twice. I get that the keys are fragile but this is a huge flaw in the product.
How are you gonna charge me $700+ for a box for the worst engineered keys of all time? I called a lock smith the second time and they couldnt even fix it. horrible product.
The SPORTRACK SR7011 Horizon Cargo Box gives you additional cargo carrying capacity at a great value. It mounts quickly and conveniently on the roof, and compacts for easy storage. The Horizon Cargo Box can carry up to 11 cu.
ft. of cargo, protected by its durable, weather resistant construction.
This air-strut supported, weather-resistant box has a lock and key and is lightweight enough for one person to easily hoist up to the roof rack of your car. The air struts hold the lid nicely up and out of the way while you load and then easily close when you are ready.
The lid flange is made to close over the base such that water runs off the top and not into, the case. The whole unit feels solid on my rooftop rack. The one thing to be aware of is that installation requires drilling a 1/4″ size hole for each of the metal U-bracket ends to enter the base shell where you can secure the heavy gauge metal bars with provided thumbnuts- 8 holes in all.
This was an easy process to custom fit the unit to my rack, but I am handy with a power drill. This step didn’t appear in the otherwise clear instructions. If you don’t have a drill, this step would seem like a barrier and you might need a friend’s help to first install it.
Otherwise, I am very satisfied with design and build quality.
I bought this rack three weeks ago for my ski trip to Canada. I was somewhat skeptical at first. I anticipated the product to be of a lower quality compare to a similar products made by Thule or Yakima.
As expected, the box arrived in a timely manner, but with many signs of UPS abuse. I thought I would be returning it. The rack, when removed it out of the box, haven’t a single scratch let alone the dents and cracks.
I was shocked! I said to myself, if this box survived UPS without a single scratch it must to be good 🙂 Construction, Outer shell (cover and base) both are thermoformed and made from a single sheet of black impact-resistant ABS blend and is about as thick as Thule counterpart.
Cover and base are connected via two aluminum hinges along one side and two spring-loaded torsion hinges front and back. The rack has two sets of keys and one lock which comes preinstalled from SportRack.
The lock has a safety feature which prohibits a removal of the key once the rack is open. The key would come out once the cover is closed. Interior, The rack doesn’t have any straps or dividers to keep the skis and/or snowboard isolated.
I would recommend placing the skis inside the ski bag before placing them inside the rack. I was able to fit three pairs of skis and poles, one hand bag inside without an issue. Hardware and installation, The rack is not very heavy.
I’ve managed to place it on top of my SUV without much effort. The hardware, although seemingly complicated at first, wasn’t difficult at all. I agree, however, with some reviews I’ve read online about manufacturer instructions being complicated.
I would recommend a revision with clarifications and better visual. The most confusing step was to figure out the order of hardware assembly. It took me a few minutes to figure out what goes where and how.
After that the process was a breeze. In case someone out there wonders how to correctly install the hardware here it is: There are two metal plates, narrow and a wide, and a U-channel for each contact point between the rack and a car.
The thick narrow plate goes inside the rack and is to be aligned with predrilled holes at the bottom of the base. The wide plate is placed outside the rack directly below the plate that is inside the rack.
The U-channel goes underneath the cross bar directly below the wide plate. The U-channel is installed in the upside down fashion so that the two rails are facing down like so ∩. The key is to do one section at the time.
Install the bolts one-by-one. Screw on the wing nuts from the inside of the rack. Make enough turns so that the bolt doesn’t fall on the roof of the car, but do not tighten them yet. Once everything is in place, begin tightening both wing nuts simultaneously while keeping an eye on the U-channel plate.
Once secured, it should be parallel with the roof of your car. Once secured, the box seemed mush sturdier than before. Driving, The rack, although not completely silent, produces a lot less noise than the scissor-style open ski racks I have.
Most of the noise was coming from the cross bars. On the way to resort I was checking the hardware integrity of the rack at every stop we’ve made. Everything seemed and felt as secure as it was when I installed it.
Overall I am very pleased with this product and with how it performed so far. I would highly recommend this rack to anyone who is looking for a good and inexpensive alternative.
After much research, and considering more expensive products (Yakima and Thule), I purchased this product. Sportrack appears to be the budget brand of Thule. Thus far I am very pleased with this product.
Installation was fairly straightforward (did it by myself, two people would be even easier). Really make sure the “Easy Snap”‘s are fully open before attempting to insert the U-Bolts. By default, at least mine, the “Easy Snap”s open just slightly, which will lead you to believe they are fully open.
They open even more to allow the threaded portion of the U-bolt to pass through. If you don’t open/twist the “Easy Snap”s all the way and attempt to force the U-bolts in you will strip the black plastic threads.
The Sportrack Installation Manual could be more explicit in this detail. I would say the “Easy Snap”s certainly function well enough but are not as elegant/efficient as the more expensive brands like Yakima and Thule with respect to mounting to the crossbars.
In other words, if you plan to take this on and off a lot, the claw type mounting feature offered in those brands is probably the way to go. That said, the roof box looks great and is relatively quiet at highway speeds.
The pull-down handle is a nice feature, especially when installed on a tall vehicle. One thing to note, at the time of purchase, the SR0711 (this product) is not currently listed in the Sportrack fit guide (Doh!).
The Rightline Gear Ace 2 Car Top Carrier is weatherproof + and attaches to vehicles WITH or WITHOUT a roof rack. Attach the carrier’s straps to a vehicles roof rack or use the Car Clips to attach the straps to a vehicle’s door frame weather molding.
The carrier is made from UV protected PVC Semi-Coated Mesh for maximum durability. Gear up with confidence on your next family vacation, backwoods expedition, shopping spree, or move.
At first, I was skeptical about this product. I don’t usually write reviews but I believe this would be incredibly useful for those that are trying to save money and space. The material is pretty durable.
I was most impressed by the amount of space in this carrier. I was able to fit 4 duffel bags, 3 tents, 2 air mattresses, and 4 sleeping bags. I was also able to squeeze other items. I had taken it on my Jeep Cherokee for about 6 hours round trip.
This carrier was secure the whole time. Of course the car felt heavier but it didn’t affect the drive. I highly recommend following how to fill the carrier to get the most out of the space.
This carrier works great! gave it 4 stars because the attachment straps are not as pictured. They are nylon straps that go into plastic cinches on the top of the carrier. The nylon straps will slip out of the cinches.
it happened on out first trip. I was able to knot the strap at the cinch and that took care of the problem. Also, the metal hooks for attaching the carrier are very small and don’t attach to anything on our rack or door frame so that is also disappointing.
I had to remove the hooks and loop the strap around the rack. I don’t think the hooks would work to attach to a door frame if vehicle doesn’ have a rack.
Looks acceptable. Haven’t used it on car. Bought it for my Jet Sled to haul ice fishing and winter camping gear behind my snowmobile. Wish there was 8 straps with buckles for thorough anchoring. Can’t find an option to buy 4 more, no instructions or info in packing.
The Reese Explore Expandable Car Top Bag allows you take extra gear along on a road trip while saving space inside your vehicle. It is simple and easy to use. This rooftop cargo bag feature straps that attach to the top of any vehicle with a roof rack, whether it uses side rails or crossbars.
It will stay securely in place as you make your way to your destination. The water-resistant material protects against rain and other moisture, ensuring that your clothes and other important items stay dry.
This rooftop bag is easy to load. It has an expandable zipper so you can increase the carrying capacity and pack it with a large amount of travel essentials. The extra space in the bag ensures a quiet ride and a better-looking alternative in rooftop storage.
The straps are adjustable to ensure a snug and aerodynamic fit for the bag so your car experiences minimal added wind resistance.
I bought this carrier before our trip to the beach. We have a new baby, so a little less space in the minivan! Inside the carrier I packed a couple of duffel bags, 3 beach chairs, 2 bags of linens/towels, some beach toys, and a few other small items I crammed in.
Still had a little space left but I didn’t spend the extra time to re-pack. Strapped the bag down tight to the roof rack using the 4 straps included. My main concern was drag on the van and/or difficulty with the handling.
However, I encountered no such issues. I was also worried about water leaking into the carrier, but I had no problem with that either. However, I didn’t get into heavy rains so I can’t speak to that.
Everything was dry inside after a couple of light rains and early morning dew. The only downside I can think of is that it’s a pain to load/unload. The bag unzips all the way open which is great, but it’s just awkward since it’s high up on the roof.
Using a step stool to pack makes it much easier. Also, don’t try to remove the bag while it’s still full. way too heavy, especially for 1 person. You may end up ripping the bottom of the bag. ( I speak from experience, but luckily it was only a small hole and duct tape patched it up nicely.
The Reece car-top carrier was perfect for us. It really added to the storage capacity of the car when my daughter and I traveled across 4 states. It is easy to use; just lay it on top the car, fill it up, and strap it down.
You definitely need at least 2 “rails” on the vehicle to strap on to though. We had front/back rails, but just tucked the side straps into the rear doors and it worked fine. The four cargo straps are plenty to tighten everything down.
We didn’t have any shifting, flapping noises, or sluggish “pull” on the car. We also loved the expandable zipper – gave that little bit of extra space to the back portion of the bag. When we stopped each day it was very easy to unstrap, unload the extra boxes and bags (into the front seats or hotel) and fold the carrier up and tuck it into the car until morning.
One TIP – we had everything in 6-8″ high plastic bins and those vacuum sealed bags, so they were easy to load and unload.
I bought this product as a cheaper alternative to a hard shell as I only really needed it for one long road trip. As it states in the description it’s supposes to be rain proof but that was far from the case.
We drove through I quick light rain shower and got a puddle in the carrier. On the way back we drove through a horrible storm and it soaked our luggage and carried a large amount of water in the carrier.
Although the zipper is covered I am pretty sure that’s where it came from or possibly when the bag is expanded to full size the bag is not rain proof. Either way I would not suggest putting anything in the carrier that should not get wet; however it was a good way to fit a lot of stuff in a small SUV.
I also had to use my own straps as the suv I was using had pre-fixed strap points that wouldn’t reach with the given straps. Bottom line I would not buy this product if you are using it for luggage.
Constructed of heavy-duty, UV-resistant vinyl, this spacious carrier is impervious to the elements. All seams are electronically welded to eliminate needle-hole leaks. Three adjustable nylon compression straps cinch down to fit odd-sized loads and eliminate wind flap.
Great purchase. Easy to put on SUV with out a rack or crossbars. Just have side rails. Survived downpours for our entire 3 1/2 hour ride on the Interstate. Everything was bone dry inside. Happy with purchase.
What a great value for the money! It’s sturdy, waterproof, and holds a LOT of luggage. Just what I wanted. I had a THULE carrier that was much more expensive and it leaked and did not hold as much as this one.
Road trips are easier when there’s more room thanks to the Jegs Rooftop Cargo Carrier. With no-tool assembly and installation, this easy-to-use cargo space can be installed by anyone. This cargo carrier for cars is designed to fit only on cross rail systems that are rated at 150 lbs and greater.
It will fit on round, square and aero bar designs up to 4 inch wide and has a carrying capacity of 110 lbs. The Jegs Rooftop Cargo Carrier provides ample storage space when taking a long trip or transporting items that do not need to be inside the vehicle.
Great box. Easily fit two checked bags of luggage with room for a folding crib and some bedding. It did increase wind noise at highway speeds, but wasn’t nearly as bad as I expected. Setup was easy, just drilled a couple holes (pre marked by manufacturer) to make it fit the roof bars and was good to go.
It also kept all my items safe in when I was rear ended and my car was totaled ($24k in damage). The box did such a good job holding onto the roof bars that it actually twisted the roof frame of the car rather than break and send my stuff flying across the highway! I would recommend this box to anybody who needs extra space for a trip.
This roof top carrier was exactly what I needed. Large and easy to install. I travelled from NY to FLA traveling 70 mph and didn’t even know it was attached. I did put ratchet straps for extra security and it was perfect.
I didn’t encounter any rain, but I covered the extra holes inside just incase. I would highly recommend this product, you can spend hundreds more but absolutely no reason to buy an expensive brand just for the name!.
AiRight — a fine product after one 600-mile drive. It arrived before it’s due date. Good capacity. Light weight. Reasonable to install with eight turnbuckle nuts on my Subaru Outback with a roof rack.
I did have to drill alternate holes for the front. Be careful with the steel plates. Make sure it is flat on the plastic carrier. There are rigidity expressions. Do not over tighten. They did not send bit dimensions in their documentation.
The lock/hinges could work smoother, but I figured it out. We had a road emergency. Somebody else’s ambulances for a mid road crash (which needed an ABS save). All our family was safe. Everything in the JEGS was fine.
You get what you pay for and the Cargo Carrier is a good investment. I look forward to it’s years of help in my travels — SW Washington DC.
So, I bought this on Prime day to move from Wisconsin to California a couple weeks ago in my little 4-door Kia. From the moment I left this thing was put to the test. That night I ran into sleet, snow, and torrential downpour through the Midwest.
This thing is not waterproof, and hardly water resistant. Fortunately, I packed everything that went into the RoofPax in waterproof vacuum bags!I bought the grip mat along with the extra hooks; thinking the more snug the better.
The grip mat isn’t even large enough for the RoofPax, first of all lol. The whole thing bunched up underneath. That damn thing budged, but gripped tight to my car despite everything! I think I put on top of my car facing the wrong way.
It isn’t completely clear what way is the front or back? Second, the extra hooks were pointless; only because there was really no way to utilize them. Ultimately, I knew I was rolling the dice buying this, but I was trying to move on a fixed income for a family emergency.
It was better than nothing, and I’m glad I bought it!I would use it again, but buy a bigger grip mat, it’s just shelf liner.

I purchased this topper in Anchorage, Ak last month and just completed the road trip to the lower 48. It was packed to the gills and made the entire 5600 mi with no problems. We had 4 adults, luggage for 2 weeks, a cooler plus other gear all packed in a Toyota RAV 4.
I had put a strip of weather proofing along the edge, just inside to try to prevent leakage as some other reviews had mentioned some water penetration. I also used a couple of small metal C-clamps on each side to better close the edges as there was just a bit of warping that caused a separation.
Bagged everything that was put in the topper in plastic bags. Nonetheless, despite enduring 2-3 days of continued rain on the trip, I found nothing damp or wet at any time. Well worth the price which was much less than any other hard topper I found.
More than likely you will have to drill some holes to match the the cross bars. My rav4 has fixed spacing on the crossbars. If you can adjust the spacing on the cross bars you’re golden. It was a little awkward getting it on the roof as the crossbars are slick, that’s my car, and the carrier wants to slide around.

Please don’t buy this item if you do not have a roof rack. I have a 2017 grand Jeep Cherokee. I have side rails but they are completely attached to my vehicle there is no way for me to get the straps around without buying cross bars.
They give you ONE long strap to put over the top and it goes through the doors and clips on the inside. The strap is super thin and not very thick. You can’t tighten the strap and keep it tight, even if you close the doors on the strap.
It doesn’t keep it tight enough to keep the bag secure. The bag alone is strong and sturdy. I have a family so I like to out alot of my things on the roof rather then inside and the shape makes it kinda hard, but over all this bag would be a great fit for someone who does have side rails.
I decided to buy it and test it, and I don’t want to write a review until I return from a road trip. So this is my comment. We left Idaho with a storm, drove to Utah, some parts of Utah had snow, rain and hail, and then drove through New Mexico with sunlight and dust.
State, and then hit Texas near us with rain and tornadoes. so in my opinion, I think it’s great, our things are soaked, our trip is ruined, but I have to Said that none of our luggage was wet, and that bag did what it said.
I am glad I bought it. So yes, if you are traveling and need extra space in the car, I do recommend it.
On the first use this tore apart, and I had to spend money to ship items to my destination UPS instead. Almost destroyed my car! Gas mileage was half my normal, and oil light came on because the cargo bag was causing so much drag on the car it had to work really hard.
Not waterproof! My items were wet before it ripped.

We have a 2007 CRV. We are a family of 4 with a new puppy and need more space for weekend trips. Instead of purchasing a bigger vehicle, we decided to get a roof top carrier first to see if that met our needs.
This is a great carrier. My husband installed it easily and quickly. He drilled an extra set of holes so the carrier would line up more to our liking (front to back alignment). We attached this to after market crossbars that my husband installed.
We plan on leaving this on the vehicle until the fall. We take a lot of day and weekend trips so it just makes sense to leave it on full time for now. We are able to just toss our stuff in the carrier and get in the car and go.
I have driven at multiple speeds and do not even realize it is on the vehicle and I can’t really say that I have noticed a negative impact on gas mileage. We researched several carriers all over the Internet; including many of the well known brands.
We ultimately went with this one because it is made in the USA, it is really made by a more well known carrier company (I learned SportRack is made by Thule); it could easily be returned if for some reason we did not like it or it didn’t work for our vehicle; and the shipping was free with site to store.
It arrived within several days. I rarely leave reviews but felt compelled this time as the other reviews really helped us make our decision and this really is a great product for the price. Others have commented on the plastic hinges.
Yes, they are plastic but they seem sturdy and it’s not like the carrier is going to be opened and closed everyday several times a day.
We purchased this carrier for our 2012 Subaru Outback for a holiday road trip. We were bringing our dog, so we didn’t have any room in the rear cargo area. This carrier is large enough to hold bags for a family of four (with winter clothes) and various Christmas presents.
It’s big! It did a pretty good job of keeping the water out. We did drive through a heavy rainstorm with approx 25mph winds and some water did seep in around the edges, but it was minimal. With the strength of the storm and highway conditions that we drove through, it did better than I thought it would.
The Roof Box mounted very securely and I had no problems with it loosening or shifting on the trip. It took about 15 minutes to mount and about 10 to remove. It’s light enough that one person can carry it.
Our mileage was minimally affected by the carrier. We do this trip a few times a year (visiting the in-laws) and normally get about 30mpg. With the carrier, we got 28. 8mpg. Not bad. For safety’s sake, we limited our top speed to about 73mph.
The roof box ads considerable height to the car’s profile, so we didn’t want to be surprised by any high crosswinds. This roof box was a great value and I’m glad we purchased it. Walmart had it for $179 + tax with free ship-to-store.
Competing sites were in the neighborhood of $300-$350 plus shipping for the exact same product. Subaru’s model (more sleek, but smaller capacity) is in the neighborhood of $480 and higher end boxes from Thule were more than that.
Considering we’ll use this about 4x/year and with it’s larger capacity, this roof box was a no-brainer.
Recently ordered this on here and had it sent to the store for free. I had to take my pick up truck in order to bring it back to the house. If your picking it up in the vehicle it will be mounted on, you don’t need any tools to do so.
And it’s light enough to lift by your self if you can reach your roof, (we drive a Kia soul) if not you will need two people to mount it. I did take one star away though because i had to drill 2 extra holes in order to mount it on my car.
It was very easy to do, even with the wrong size drill bit. I do have very wide rola roof racks though, so I’m sure it would not be a problem with other racks. It took me about 30min at most to have this on and secure.
It came completely assembled and the directions are idiot proof. It’s water tight so far, it’s been snowing for 2 weeks now and it’s been great on top of the car. No noise from it, auctualy quiets down the racks.
Key /lock rear entry is great if you can get to it. Lots and lots of room. Fits my 156cm snowboard. Very durable, but still more flimsy than a $400 one. No complaints here though. Will be driving across country with it soon.
Take more cargo with you wherever you go with this car top luggage carrier. You won’t have to sacrifice interior space and passenger comfort to carry your gear with you when you can store it on the roof.

After a hiccup in our family travel plans, we found ourselves in need of roof rails and a rack with little time to spare. We got the rails elsewhere. First off, the staff at my local HF were really helpful – my wife called ahead because the site listed this as out of stock at that location.
They searched the storeroom and found one, sparing me an hour of driving. After payment, they had someone bring it out to my car straight from the storeroom. Really great customer service. The rack itself took about 35 minutes to assemble and about the same to install squarely on the rails.
Assembly was straightforward – it comes in three pieces that get screwed together. You need to slide the rubber screw covers over the rack tubes before assembly. The most difficult and time consuming part was wiggling those covers over the screws.
If you have arthritis in your hands, you might need help. The hardest part of mounting it on the rails was that after checking all sides for alignment, the rack shifts when you tighten it down. So, at least for me, I had to account for the shift, tighten down diagonal corners first, then the others.
The rack held two large and one medium moderately heavy hardshell suitcases, though we may have been able to fit another medium one. I wish the middle section was a little longer, which I think it could have been and still fit in the box – but it worked in a pinch.
The other thing is the rack itself weighs 26lb, which really cut into the 150lb limit of our rails. For $100 though, this thing is unbeatable. Seems pretty bombproof after a 400mi drive. We used a rubber roof zip case to enclose our bags, which has integrated straps.
We frequently checked tightness of the whole assembly along the way, especially at the beginning, as per the manual.
Got this top carrier for my Hyundai Sonata to use on top of some Rhino Rack crossbars I purchased elsewhere. It was easy to assemble & seems very solid. Made a move from IL to NC so needed some extra space on top.
Ended up having beach/lawn chairs up there. Only complaint on that was that it was too small in both directions that I couldn’t get the chairs side by side in any way. Lots of bungee cords tied it all down, but wish it were just a few inches wider or longer.
Not sure that the angled face plate on the front, and especially the back side being angled as well is needed. I get the need for aerodynamics on the front, but not on the back. seems to be wasted space which might have given me those few extra inches I needed.
I would recommend that you measure what you will be hauling up there to make sure it will fit within the actual cargo area. Otherwise, great product!.
This is a nice roof rack & I’m happy with it for the price. It’s sturdy, well made and is easily put together and installed. I would have given 5 stars but a couple of things I thought could have been better about it but nothing major.
It comes of course with the hardware to put it together but the washers for the screws that come with the rack are only rubber washers and I feel like it should have come with metal washers as well. The second thing is that it comes with tight down knobs for the u-bolts that attach to your existing crossbars.
I feel like the u-bolts should have come with lock nuts as well to make the u-bolts more secure. But like I said, nothing major because I just went to the hardware store and bought some stainless steel washers and lock nuts.
Drive Den had sent me out a roof box but it was damaged during transport. Drive Den then sent out another box and it too was damaged during transport. Drive Den then sent a third box (third time lucky) and collected the two damaged boxes.
Matt and Neil were fantastic in sending the replacement roof boxes and collecting the damaged one. I would rate them as 5 stars!.
Despite the Halfords website saying this box was not suitable for my vehicle (Audi Q5), i went with my gut and trusted the dimensions compared to the Audi specific box and bought it anyway. Fits perfectly with room for the tailgate to open and no frontal overhang.
Box itself opening from both sides is great for loading/unloading and the closing mechanism ensures you have a correctly closed latch before locking. Definitely recommend this as a quality roof box.
Hit the road with the CargoLoc Roof-Top Carrier, and know wherever you’re going, all your stuff will arrive safely. This handy cargo carrier fits all raised roof rack vehicles, with a generous 10 cubic-foot capacity for maximum storage space.
On top of this cargo box boasting roominess, the 4 adjustable straps with side-release buckles provide easy and secure storage for items. Toughness merges with safety, as the weather-resistant material keeps out elements, while the soft PVC material cushions and protects items.
Feel as if you’re on top of the world once the CargoLoc Roof-Top Carrier is onyour c ar’s roof.
The specific reason I bought this cargo carrier was that picture showed it had tie-down straps on all four sides. When I received it, it had straps at only the side raiils, NOT front and rear. I tested the bag using cross bars and side rails, and even when positioned with the cross rails supporting the bag, the bag bounced up and down on the roof loudly and I removed it after less than five miles.
I did not save the box, so I probably can’t return it, and it would cost too much to return anyway. The build quality of the bag is fine, but if you are buying the bag because it appears to have tie-downs on all four sides, look elsewhere.
If you’re looking for a car top carrier but don’t want to install a roof rack, there are a few things you should know. First, you’ll need to find a carrier that’s specifically designed for your car. Some carriers attach to the door frame or hatch, while others use suction cups or straps that go around the entire vehicle.
Once you’ve found a carrier that will work for your car, you’ll need to decide how you want to load it. Some carriers have a zip-open top, while others have a rear-loading design. If you’re carrying larger items, you’ll want to make sure the carrier is big enough to accommodate them.
Finally, you’ll need to secure the carrier to your car. This is usually done with straps that go around the car, through the doors, or around the hatch. Make sure the carrier is securely fastened before driving, and be sure to check it periodically to make sure it hasn’t come loose.
