20 Best Cam For Ls1 Stock Heads (2022 Updated)

The cam itself gives a good chop sound. Sadly, I wanted to go a different route after had already bought it. The timing chain is a double roller and there was no information or hardware to say/fix the oil pump that wasn’t going to clear the chain so that setback my build.

As for valve train, you’re pretty much just replacing it with the same stock parts. There isn’t a lot in this kit. The only thing worth getting is the camshaft if that’s the type of build you want. Customer service and shipping was helpful and quick.

So that’s a plus.

overall great kit here were MY issues: (and reason for poor installation marks) -pushrods sent were 0. 050” longer… why? no notes in description -kit description doesnt clarify cam gear type (1x vs 4x) it came with a 1x for a 24tooth reluctor -it advertises no tuning or comp req’d however, the factory idle is too low for this cam… it needs to be raised at least 250rpm, and sets a MAP code.

The kit as a whole, is well built. i can agree with people stating “why provide springs with an NSR cam?” but its not bank breaking for the insurance of matched springs.

The kit works and it sounds awesome. Only issue you will run into are the pushrods supplied with the kit are too long. The only other issue you may have is the kit comes with spacers for the oil pump so you can use the double row chain and sprockets but it is a very tight fit behind the timing cover.

I solved it by getting a new oil pump with the bolt heads flush with the pump body. The stock oil pumps have bolt heads that will hit the cover and not fit. If you want a nasty sounding cam and are gonna use a good sized stall, it’s the bee’s knee’s.

Just be ready for a tune.

Was skeptical about getting or installed due to bad reviews of other Ss2 clone. Cam came in garbage packaging but was not damaged in shipping. Micd all the journals and lobes, approx. 590 lift with 1.

7 arm. Slid in as it should, idles like a beast. Much better performing than my prior LS9 cam.

Cam works well. Nice increase in mid range torque. Disappointed with how Elgin packaged the cam. It wasn’t in any kind of bag just thrown in a box, no cam lube and didn’t come with a full cam card. Only included basic information printed on the box.

This elgin cam made great power and lope. Arrived quick and couldn’t be more satisfied.

Per the cam card: 275 Intake / 281 Exhaust Avertised duration, 227 Intake / 233 Exhaust @. 050. This is the second Lunati cam I’ve seen where the catalog spec and cam sheet differ for same part #. That aside I installed this cam in a dome piston 355 Chevy V8 in a granny 4 speed 68 Chevy truck and sounds / runs great!!! Still breaking in motor before I really let it run.

Perfect for my combo as I wanted something a hair below the 280 Mega Cam I had, so I was already looking for around 275ish duration.

Wow this cam was an excellent choice. I have used many cams before but not Lunati. I decided on this cam when I read the technical data. The lift, duration, and power range was exactly what I wanted.

This cam gives me the power and torque that I needed. It sounds great and the acceleration is smooth and quick. I recommend Lunati to all of you who are searching for power and torque.

I purchased this kit to replace a Comp 280 Magnum in a sbc. First the good. The cam makes much more low end power in my particular combination to include a very substantial amount of cranking compression.

Now the bad. This is not the first hydraulic lifter cam I’ve ever changed nor the first engine I’ve ever built in 40 years of working on these things. After the install within 2-3 hours of shutting the engine down every time it was started.

The lifters would clack very loud until oil pressure was again established and then the noise would subside. After calling Lunati’s Tech Line and being told this was “Normal”. I purchased a set of Chevrolet Performance Parts lifters from Summit which the lifters themselves were nearly as expensive as the Lunati kit.

As expected to further issues after replacing them. I would not recommend purchasing any lifters from Lunati unless you like to throw money in the trash as I did.

Purchased this cam and lifter kit. The lifters supplied were junk as after the car would sit a few hours. They would bleed down and chatter until they pumped up again after startup. Called Lunati tech line and was advised this was Normal.

I’ve never had this Normal issue in the past 40 years working on Chevy engines. I replaced them with with Chevrolet Performance Parts lifters also purchased from Summit and as expected the issued was resolved.

This was an unnecessary and unexpected added expense. The quality replacement lifters were almost as much as the complete cam/lifter kit.

I purchased his camshaft kit based on the overall quality of the product being a good choice for my application. This kit is being installed in a small block Chevy which is in my project truck a 1955 Chevy 1st design 1 1/2 ton Dump/Flatbed Truck which has been a project now for around 10 years.

I will also be adding new intake, carb, headers and gear drive kit to boost up power and torque to my rig. I will purchasing these items here soon from Summit Racing. Thanks, Doug.

Built a mild 289cid for a 1964 Ford Falcon Hardtop, C4 Auto and 2K stall converter, 3. 23:1 rear gears and a Summit Racing 600cfm carb and hi-rise intake manifold, cast iron Hipo style exhaust manifolds.

Engine idles smoothly at 800-825 RPM’s and has that fantastic “Smooth as a sewing machine sound” that you can only get with a solid lifter cam. Performance over a stock cam is most noticeable above 2K RPM’s on the tach or at highway speeds, I’m still tuning and making adjustments on this car.

This camshaft is still mild enough that our Falcon still gets 20mpg too. Our goal when we built this car was build the engine to look and preform like if Ford had installed a HIPO, 271HP, 289cid a 1964 Falcon back when it was made and this camshaft offers more valve lift and power at a lower RPM then the original HIPO 289 cam did.

Used this to replace a flat tappet Thumper cam that was destroyed during break-in for unknown reasons; should have gone roller to begin with!! The overall ease of installation was nice, and the overall sound, while not like the Thumper, does demand attention.

The motor, a 347 stroker, appears to like the cam grind and does have some pretty sweet performance. I purchased the suggested Comp Cams springs and the dog bones and tray set as well. This went in a 1976 F100 SB, RWD, TCI C6, 3.

89 gears. It does have plenty of giddyup too!!!!.

this camshaft only lasted 22 minutes. it threw all metal debris through the oiling system that the entire motor needed a complete rebuild costing me more money than I would make on this customers car.

Not worth it. I did everything per comp cams instructions. I have built many engines in the past 25+ years and this is the first time that 2 cams have failed consecutively on the same engine. I am now getting an edelbrock roller camshaft kit.

this is the 3rd purchase of a camshaft for the same engine that I am paying out on my own (lost revenue). And now trying to get credit for the failed camshafts from summitracing. no summitracing reps answers calls on a Saturday.

It’s a great kit that comes with almost everything that you need. The cam gives a really mean chop. Only things that you need for this kit is the spacers for the oil pump and if you want to add rocker arms to make it a complete top end rebuild.

Everything was pretty straight forward and I am impressed on the quality of the parts.

Made decent power, usual dod delete with BTR. 560 springs with the 54-700-11, stock converter 4l60e and t-case in 2wd on 93 octane made 312hp and 409ftlb through a 2nd gear pull. With a little throttle input it will start and idle but will need tune to clean idle up, will stall while coming to stop.

Def could use a slightly higher stall.

Order a set of lash adjusters also from Comp Cams. I recently had these professionally installed along with the comp cams valve springs. Everything is as advertised except for the exceptionally loud ticking from the motor.

Sounds similar to a sewing machine. After diagnosis, the lash adjusters needed to be replaced. I spoke with another performance shop who said they’ve had to replace lash adjusters on other 4. 6L 2v motors after installing bigger camshafts.

Save yourself the time and extra shop labor costs and go ahead have the lash adjusters replaced while they have everything opened up.

I like to have the power when i want it,so i ordered these Extreme cams so my new motor would come alive in my restored mustang. I had the new motor and cams installed and the ford dealer said it was running perfect.

It does run good but ,the old motor ran just as strong without the cams. these cams in my book are not extreme they are like a first level upgrade cam that i would put in my wife’s car to make her think she has something better then the others at the super market.

i picked the Extreme 3 because they were the biggest cams for the motor without doing head and other changes to the motor. I thought the cams would be like when we would install a three quarter cam back in the 80’s but i guess Extreme today isn’t nothing like we had, a good tune and a little timing with a few moth balls back then and we had a lot more power then these cam can put out.

If you are wanting to get more power go with another two sizes bigger then the Extreme 3’s. the stang runs good ,but not even close to what i wanted. Keith L. McCauley.

I did a lot of research on these cams before I purchase them, going to Stage 3 with new springs and retainers you have to install other mods to get the best performance. I did not get the heavy lope but got a lot of extra horsepower and pick up.

Adding 4. 10 gears, typhoon manifold, 30lb injectors, underpulley, fuel rails, 78mm throttle body and a Air raid cold intake. Just put me well over 300 hp at the rear wheels. Well worth the money.

I love the cams. I can definitely feel a difference in horsepower around 4000 RPM’s. I got the cams installed and was also looking for a little lope, but the cams made no difference in sound. That being said, I went and got the cats removed and got the tune as well.

Now the car accelerates a lot quicker at high RPM’s and sounds mean.

These things make your car sound absolutely beautiful and run mean as can be. The first review on here sounds more like the guy had the bad driver mod. Given he only ran a 12. 9 with about every bolt on and blamed a 13.

7 pass on the cams. Anyway, don’t listen to him. These cams will get you amazing performance with a good Dyno tune and CORRECT installation.

to the guy above me. sounds to me like your cams are not timed right and possibly during the install that your cam timeing chains have sliped off the sproket at the crank. theres now way that you should be going slower at the track after cams.

you should have your cams timeing checked. check the timeing marks on the phaser and chain and make sure postion1 is at top dead center to see if all is where it should be. hope this helps you out and any one who want to do cams to there mustang.

i have stage 2 cams in my mustang and they are awsome 🙂 puting down 380rwhp with the stock heads.

One lifter failed causing a catastrophe. Simply put, Comp Cam camshafts are very good. If you follow the proper break-in procedure you should have no problem. Their lifters are not so good, and who knows who truly makes them for Comp Cams.

From all the extensive research I have done on their lifters, if I had to do it all over again I would only purchase their cam and not the re-labeled lifters they sell. I would most likely just go with Mahle lifters.

Great cam choice in my 1995 Sierra 4×4. Monster mid torque. I threw on 1. 6 ratio rockers to increase lift and really woke it up. I am using older Edelbrock heads. 600cfm Holley vac secondaries. 1800-2000 stall & shift kit, vet servo.

I am happy with this steerable combo (I would not tow with it though). Hope this helps others. Thanks.

Feels like a brand new car. Had to buy bee hive valve springs $350 with installation. Noticeably faster. Would I do again? yes!

Got the cam kit with springs and got new lifters and trays. I tune my vehicles myself and this cam responded very well to the adjustments. Makes a good racey idle But smooths out over 1,200 rpm. I put it in my 5,400lb 6.

2l Sierra Denali with a 3k converter and the thing rippppppps to 7k! good driveability also. In my opinion the smallest engine this thing will work decent in is a 5. 7L Don’t get it if you have a 5. 3/4.

8l Now the dual. 660 springs on the other hand were a bear to install, they work but I wish summit offered btr springs in lieu of trick flows.

Ok, I waited to write a review until I had some mileage on it. I installed it in a rcsb lq4 Silverado stock heads with headers and exhaust. Extremely easy to tune in a nice hard idle or you can tame it down with the spark table.

It pulls really hard up top and I would totally buy again. I have 5k on the setup and look forward to more.

Camshaft got shipped and delivered pretty quick! Got the old mild cam swapped out in my 4. 8 with this New Summit Cam and got my engine back together and it sounds healthier then before! Glad I made the decision to change over because this cam sounds GREAT!.

I spent 4 years drooling over a cam with similar specs, Summit finally made one at a price point I wanted to afford. My valve train is a little louder than with the factory cam. This thing adds power everywhere, there is no down side.

4k and up really starts to wake up. Running up a mountain I drive often I had fewer downshifts into 2nd at highway speeds, made for a nicer ride and I’m sure the tranny appreciates that too. It took a little for my computer to get used to the cam, after getting up to temp my first WOT run was very disappointing, after running a tank through it the idle is still getting figured out but the rest seems real happy.

2006 Sierra 1500 L33.

I had a local guy dyno tune, i think there is so much more potential than stock 5. 3 t cam with 140k, torque curve starts low and extends through 5500rpm, however since cam sets a p0300 at times. stalls after starting hot then putting into gear.

have the hp tuner coming to fine tune with lambda. gas millage with 4. 10 4l60 in land cruiser getting 13- 14 when on hwy w/o 3000lb trailer. w/trailer dont know. its been 15k.

I was torn between the 8712 and 8718, but ended up going smaller for the daily driver. My truck is a 2001 Silverado 5. 3. I’m thoroughly impressed with this cam, and I haven’t gotten it tuned yet. The stock idle rpm of 550 in park and 525 in gear makes this thing chop way more than expected.

It makes me grin every time I stop at a light. I uploaded Some idle videos on YouTube if you want to hear what it will sound like. My fuel mileage is still the same at almost 18mpg. If you are wanting a cam that you can run without a tune for a while, then this is the one you need.

I wish I had put this cam in all my ls truck motors.

I’ve been running this cam for about a year now. Installed it into a 2007 Tahoe which has the Gen IV 5. 3. I had DOD fail and needed a cam. I didnt want to go back to stock because lets face facts, who really does? After a lot of research and back and forth between a few different cams I found this one and was sold.

I left the compression ratio the same at 9. 5:1 and installed it with new lifters and springs and utilized my stock push rods and everything worked perfect together. After some tuning with HP Tuners it really woke the Tahoe up.

Motor produced 400 HP after the install and tuning was done. (NOTE: That was NOT to the rear wheel) However, If you did bump the compression up to 10. 5:1 it would produce more power. Overall its a solid cam and I would buy it again.

I installed this cam in a 2001 LR4 4. 8L. With the factory head gaskets (. 060” thick) I needed 7. 5” pushrod length. If using multi layer steel head gaskets (. 050” thick) which came as a factory upgrade sometime in 2001 you can use the factory pushrod length (7.

The cam seem to be just what I wanted. I haven’t had a chance to really run the engine up to the max power yet but it idles good with a stock converte and the engine seem to have more pull in the mid-range.

I would recommend this cam to anyone who wants a good strong street engine.

So let’s leave a review withough reading the previous. This “torque cam/ low lift is a GREAT starter cam, I’m cam / valve springs & a 3600 stall. Given this cam is slightly large for a stock converter, BUT the gains are amazing , broad gain from 3000/6200 and then some.

Amazing chop at 850 rpm idle. She’s not the craziest but def is a major improvement on a 5. 3 w a quick gasket match. This cam IS larger than advertised in a sense it runs like a stage 2 or higher. No torque loss under 1300 RPM.

It’s not been installed yet but soon before summer is over it’ll be done. I’m getting all the other stuff to go with this build. Today I made another purchase from you guys for this build. 08-24-21 This is my second cam purchase from you and this time you guys went above and beyond to get me this cam on time because of conflicts in its availability.
