A cable modem is a device that connects a computer to the Internet using a coaxial cable. The modem converts the digital signal from the cable into an analog signal that can be used by the computer. A cable modem for xfinity gigabit is a high-speed modem that is capable of providing speeds of up to 1 Gbps.
This type of modem is typically used by people who have a high-speed Internet connection.
Introducing the first DOCSIS 3. 1 cable modem in the SURFboard lineup. The SURFboard SB8200 is a DOCSIS 3. 1 modem – the newest technology being offered by cable providers. It is perfect for things like 4K Ultra-HD video streaming and Virtual Reality gaming.
Plus, it has 2-Gigabit Ethernet ports! Today’s connected home demands speeds far more powerful than ever. Power your home network with the SB8200 and get the fastest speeds and most reliable connection to the Internet.
The Arris SB8200 is compatible with Cox, Spectrum, Comcast Xfinity, Mediacom, WOW!, Suddenlink, Midco, and Sparklight. The 2-port setup permits you to handle two separate internet connections provided your ISP provides another usable IP address.
The best thing about the SB8200 is a high-speed Broadcom processor. The SoC works in tandem with 3GB RAM, making it easier to cut through any type of congestion and network latency. The Broadcom BCM3390 is fast and lets you work in adherence with the 32 x 8 channel bonding support.
The DOCSIS 3. 1 support even lets you manage multi-gig connections, provided the ISP is supportive of the same. Arris even incorporates 16MB of flash memory to store network configurations and updates with ease.
The existing processing setup makes way for IPv6 support to improve browsing performances, significantly. You also get 128MB of additional storage space to amplify networking experiences. Quick installation and setup with the web interface are very easy to get around, making activation simple.
Switching back to Comcast/Xfinity, and decided I wanted my own modem rather than renting. I ordered Xfinity’s “super fast” – on sale for $50 a month – “up to” 600Mbps down, 20Mbps up. It does better than that – I’m regularly getting 700.
We had Comcast a long time ago, and the cable was still there sticking out of the wall. So once I’d ordered service on the Xfinity website, I just plugged it in, and pretty soon it was up. Yes, the blue LED status light for DOCSIS 3.
1 is very bright, the regular green LEDs are not a problem. I get the downlink blue, up is green. I ended up with a lot of problems getting the Xfinity account to work – three long sessions on the phone and “chat”.
At one point they put a “block” on the modem and nothing worked. Their mistake. Finally it’s all working. Yay! I’m using an old Plume mesh system for the router and WiFi, and a switch for the wired things – and it works well.
(Plume is grandfathered in, not subscribed. ) In case it’s not obvious, this is a modem, not a router. You’ll need a router, and I had one. My experience is that things like this eventually have a 1%-5% failure rate, so I got the Geek protection for it.
It’s only been running a week or two so far. Because we’re in an area where the utility can shut off power (or drunk drivers can hit power poles) – wild fires are a real threat in this part of California – I have the modem (and router, and NAS) on a UPS.
I replaced my Buckeye Broadband (Erie County) modem with this. I can assure you IT IS compatible with Buckeye. I’ve had this hooked up for 5 days with no issues. My motivation was to see if I could detect better performance with a better and faster modem.
All of my other equipment is so far advanced vs. what my Buckeye modem is. My Wi-Fi seems to be more responsive since I connected this. Here’s the downside, even though it has two connection ports, only one can be used at a time.
The only way around that is asking the internet provider to assign a separate IP address. I requested Buckeye to do that, and they said they don’t do it. I still might return this, not because I’m not happy with it, because I’ve recently learned that Buckeye is very soon to have viable competition in our area.
Therefore, when that happens, if I change providers, this would be useless. I know how hard it is to figure out what might be compatible with Buckeye. I bought and returned another modem because it wasn’t, but I can assure you this one is.
Allow me to set the record straight, a different modem DOES NOT increase your internet speed. It might improve your Wi-Fi, but it doesn’t increase the speed you’re subscribed to.
This modem helps provide browsing speed of up to 1 Gbps Wired connectivity offers a reliable connection with compatible devices External form factor allows a hassle-free installation It is 10X faster than DOCSIS 3.

•My last Modem was from NETGEAR and I refused to try any other brand. I will stick or stay with the NETGEAR brand because it is a good company. NETGEAR backs their products. The NETGEAR staff have been extremely helpful.
If you need help with installation, call NETGEAR if you need it, however the instructions were user friendly. We were able to connect the NETGEAR modem with a little help. I am so glad the NETGEAR modem was purchased.
We are getting better and fast service than we have ever had before. I plan to tell all of my family and friends about this NETGEAR Modem. We appreciate NETGEAR, and have been impressed by the NETGEAR Company.
As mentioned before, we were satisfied with are previous NETGEAR modem and we believe NETGEAR has, excellent quality products, outstanding service, NETGEAR never fails to impress. Never! Thank you for the opportunity to share.
It is always nice to hear how well you are doing. Like I said, I intend to spread the word. We hope to do more business with you in the future.
NetGear devices has always been my goto when I need a router or modem. Mostly because the company is an industrial leader when it comes to network devices. I recently bought the NetGear Cm1000v2 modem and a nighthawk NetGear router.
The Modem design and looks was an attractive feature. The most important buy in for me was the fact that it is a high speed, duo network modem that any gamer will love. The user setting GUI is very simple to navigate that any user can easily make changes without technical knowledge.
Lastly, the company’s customer support is world class. I was having issues with my network speed hence I was referring to NetGear by my ISP. The customer service was very professional and ready to ensure the issue get resolved.
After the call, the agent called several time during to make sure everything was working great afterwards.
This Netgear-Nighthawk Cable modem replaced my 3 yr old ARRIS – SURFboard 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3. 1 Cable Modem – after experiencing intermittent drops in service for last 5 months and having ruling out my ISP and router as not being the cause.
Upon installing this new modem upon recommendation from Astound ISP technician the problem has ceased and now have returned to stable internet. Speed is same as before and the unit is sleek and has small foot print on my entertainment furniture.
Very quiet and light is not distracting and due angled face not pointing at you if in a highly visible area like mine is. This works w/ many ISPs but best to confirm w/ your before installing to avoid returns.
My max speed is 1 GB so this one fits the bill as it is 1GB rated and delivers as promised.
Get the most out of your high-speed Xfinity with Voice service while saving money with the Nighthawk 2. 5 Gb/s Cable Modem from Netgear. Designed specifically to support Xfinity from Comcast with voice services, this DOCSIS 3.
1 cable modem supports 2. 5 Gb/s cable internet service plans, which provide exceptionally fast speeds for smooth 4K video streaming, playing online games, operating smart devices, and more. Don’t worry if you don’t have 2.
5G speeds in your area yet. This cable modem is backward compatible with lower internet speeds and previous DOCSIS versions, allowing you to upgrade to faster speeds down the road without having to buy another modem.
By owning your own cable modem, you can save money on paying monthly rental fees to your cable company. The Nighthawk cable modem also includes two telephone ports that automatically prioritize voice over internet for high call clarity.
Enhanced calling features include 3-way conference calling, caller ID, and call forwarding.
The good – easy to install. Up and running in minutes. The bad – quit working 2 days after install. Spent several hours on the phone with customer service, at which point they stated I need to get my my cable provider.
it was there issue. So, I installed my old modem, and it worked. hmmm. Once I finally got them to admit it was the modem, the return process starts. You have pay to ship the modem back, and they have to receive before they will ship a replacement modem.
unless you want to pay some outrageous fee upfront for them to ship you a new one, and then you still have to pay to return the old. And your 90 day warranty still goes from the original purchase date, not when you receive the new one.
So you could be a month without a modem, and there goes 1/3 of your warranty. Thank you Amazon, as I requested to return and get a replacement, and they shipped me out a new one same day. allowing me 30 days to return the broken one.
Thats customer service. Netgear take note. Gave it a 3 because the replacement seems to be working good. Hope I don’t have to use the warranty again. after 90 days you even have to pay for tech support.
Works great, but recommend you look at other options.
It improves your internet experience and is ideal for the speeds you need for gaming, VR (virtual reality), 4k ultra HD streaming and more. CM1200 supports up to four (4) public ip addresses (wan ip) with a Comcast business account.
Multi-IP address support for up to four home networks allows for multiple servers to run at the same time. Backwards compatibility with previous Docsis standards and works right of the box with internet cable services like Xfinity from Comcast, spectrum and cox.
The nighthawk CM1200 Docsis 3. 1 multi-gig cable modem is built for gigabit internet service plans available today and ready for future upgrades.
Finally decided to upgrade my internet speed and i needed to replace the Arris cable modem that had provided over 8 years of faithful service. Upon the recommendation of the Spectrum cable tech, i purchased a Netgear cable modem.
First time using a Netgear product. I heard many good things over the years, but never felt the need to purchase any of their products since ive had no issues with Arris, Motorola, and Linksys devices.
Took Spectrum a few moments after receiving the mac address to have my new Netgear up and running. So far, no complaints. My connection is strong and steady. Im using this modem to power my Linksys Mesh network using wifi6.
At any given moment, there are at least 40+ devices with 2 tvs constantly streaming in 4k. The Netgear and Linksys are both working great. As of right now, i would definitely recommend this model. If you’re a Spectrum customer who doesn’t want to pay rental fees for their cable modem (which is actually pretty good), make things easier on yourself and buy a Netgear.
It is highly recommended by their repair techs and customer service reps. Now if this modem dies in the next few days, weeks, or months, i will make a follow-up post detailing what happened.
I wanted a Modem-Router Combo with the latest DOCSIS 3. 1 and Wi-Fi 6 technology. The NIGHTHAWK CAX80 met the technical requirements. Installing the CAX80 wasn’t as easy as advertised. I could not ‘self activate’ thru the Web.
The Nighthawk Smartphone App can be used to setup WiFi, but does not setup Modem. My cable company is Spectrum. I’ve had my internet account with them (including their predecessor Time-Warner and RoadRunner) for more than 20 years.
Their customer service is excellent–once you get a live person. They performed diagnostics and said the modem was working. However, I could not connect to the internet. They gave me a direct number to Netgear, and I called for assistance.
Within minutes my modem-router was working perfectly. They are remarkably competent. The Wi-Fi signal is stronger and more constant without fluctuation than my older modem-router. No pauses or buffering when watching streaming video movies.
The Netgear advertising is accurate and reliable. So is the performance. I am well pleased and highly recommend this router.
MULTI-GIG NETWORKING: The SURFboard S33 features a 2. 5 Gbps Ethernet port plus an additional 1 Gbps Ethernet port for a 2nd network Cable internet service required. Does NOT include Wi-Fi and does not support cable digital voice service.

Can’t knock the speed on this thing; detected no measurable loses compared to my aging Netgear modem. In other words. I get all the speed I am paying for. But the problem with this modem (and I suspect many others now.
) is that if you have Comcast/Xfinity, they will provision this modem and download their boot module into it, which then locks you out of the ‘Web Manager’ internal status web page of the device. I thought something was fishy when I couldn’t log into through my router arrangement @ 192.
168. 100. 1 – so it prompted me to connect my laptop directly to it (as Arris recommends anyway). What I got was a login page that wouldn’t allow access because the user name or password had been altered – meaning – the defaults were modified.
It’s important to be able to see the internal logs and the signal/bonding stats from time to time to see if your ISP is having outside infrastructure problems. With Comcast shutting things down, they are basically altering the device you paid for with no notification.
Not cool. Not cool at all. The other problem that prompted me to score this device low is the mobile app Arris prompts you to use to set up and configure your device. Don’t waste your time with that on this particular device.
It offers nothing of value beyond the information you already have access to on the bottom product label or the quick start card. It’s these types of not-even mediocre attempts to promote ‘mobile app’ benefits that are pretty much deceitful – and that would otherwise prompt me to give this modem 0 stars if the BB review section allowed it.
Coupled with the no-go Web Manager lock-out. I can’t recommend this product whatsoever. Giving this modem ‘average’ scores on performance and connection quality only because I’ve used it for such a short period of time.
If you sort the reviews by lowest score first, you will see that the S33 also has medium to long term reliability issues that the typical social media agents of Arris will reply to in recognizably unsupported ways.
I’ve had this modem for 4 months now, and I’ve been very impressed. I choose the Arris S33 over the Motorola MB8611 mostly because it was on sale at the time for less, plus I had BestBuy rewards credit to put toward it.
The modem itself has been a bit of an improvement over my Xfinity XB7. The XB7 is also made by Arris, but uses an Intel chipset, the S33 uses a newer Broadcom chipset that I feels performs better. With the XB7, even though I have 1.
2 Gb speeds, at most I would only hit approximately 900 Mb with downloads. The S33 hits at 1. 1 Gb on the same Speedtest. net test using the same server. I can confirm that this modem runs pretty hot.
Using a digital thermometer, I was reading 134 degrees F at the top vents, compared to 107 degrees coming out of the my ASUS RT-AX86U router running 30 devices. My solution was to get a 120mm USB fan and place it underneath the modem, and that cooled things down significantly.
I had my previous arris surfboard for 4 years but noticed a little bit of a bottleneck in my network so I decided to pull the trigger on this as it was compatible with xfinity. I didn’t need a wireless modem as I had a mesh system.
After a few reviews this item was usually at or near the top of recommended equipment. Install and set up were easy and in no time I was seeing consistent speeds. For whatever reason though I noticed that my ubiquiti UniFi system wasn’t able to communicate with this modem so i did end up purchasing a new Orbi mesh system.
I am not sure which piece of equipment was at fault for the lack of compatibility but I switched to a Netgear Orbi system and it it works great. My speeds more than tripled compared to my old modem and wifi system.
If it last as long as my previous surfboard it should save me money in the long run as I’m not paying the monthly xfinity rental fee.
Create a powerful home or small office network with this ARRIS SURFboard cable modem. Two Ethernet ports let you connect directly to your devices, and 32 download and eight upload channels provide real-time video and game streaming without lagging.
This ARRIS SURFboard cable modem supports IPv4 and IPv6 browsing for reliable connectivity.
Normally get 10% more speed than I’m paying for, ow I’m getting 17-20%. My old modem just decided to die. Was also the Arris brand, one down from this model. (SB6190). Paying for 800 was getting 860-880 wired direct, now I’m getting 925 on the low end and have occasionally seen as high as 986.
Old modem was not know to have bad latency for gaming as I was based on an intel Puma chipset. This one uses Qualcomm chips and does seem to do better when gaming on my Xbox. The LED’s while similar in arrangement to my old modem the colors once fully connected to my ISP (Comcast) are now different as the download still glows Blue once channels are bonded, but the upload only goes blue when bonded on IPV6.
Even set to IPV6 I’m not showing upload bonded, however like with he download, I’m getting 20% better speed than I’m paying for. So overall no complaints at all. Although it does have to Ethernet connections on the back, you can ONLY use both if you ISP has the ability to give you two IP addresses AND of course you have fo pay extra for that.

You may not have to pay the rental fee from your provider but with Xfinity, they still have full control of your modem. They can flash your firmware so they can do anything they want to it. There is nothing user-friendly in the web interface that no longer works after Xfinity said they would fix my problem.
If your interface works then the only thing you can do is read the logs. I have seen other posts with the same issue of no longer being able to access your web GUI. You can not fix this problem since you don’t have access to the firmware & Netgear told me they can not flash the firmware because it is taken care of by the ISP.
This does not sound secure that my modem can be flashed from the public side. It also means I bought it but I don’t own it.

Reviews From Real Customers
Our Internet provider (a local cable company) sent us multiple messages that reported both the good news that our service would be moved to its 400+MB/sec level at no extra monthly charge and the reality news that in order to experience the full benefit of that new speed, we’d need a modem that meets the DOCSIS 3.
1 standards, which our then-current modem did not do. Since we own rather than rent our modem, I decided to investigate the benefits of replacing our perfectly good DOCSIS 3. 0 modem. I ran a speed test on our old unit and achieved a speed of ~250MB/sec – very, very good, but not 400+MB/sec.
So I ordered this Motorola unit from samsclub. com, in part because I trust Sam’s Club, but more because the Motorola device was on our provider’s list of modems it had certified to work with their system.
Since its installation in our home, the unit has returned speed test results consistently in the mid-400’sMB/sec, and that’s while connected via our router. BOTTOM LINE: This Motorola modem works, works well, and works as advertised.

I wanted to upgrade my Netgear 500V modem that I have had in place for several years. It was functioning okay but I wanted to get a newer more advanced internet voice modem they would allow me to get the higher speed that my Comcast plan provides.
From everything I read about the Arris Modem it should have taken me no more than 15 minutes to get it operating. I first tried online through my Xfinity account. After entering all the information, I got a message that about 11 minutes that the new modem would be activated.
However, in about 11 minutes I got a message that something went wrong at to try again. I tried again but with a similar result and a recommendation that I call a technician. However, since I knew that I already ha functioning older modem that the issue was trying to activate the new modem.
I then called Comcast. After 45 minutes on my cell phone, it became clear that the problem was ARRIS Surfboard. Only the power light and one other light ever came on. I then called the ARRIS technical staff as recommended in the information that came with the modem.
I was told that if Comcast could not activate it there was nothing that they could do. I then plugged in my old Netgear modem and all the lights came on. However, I had to call Comcast to reactivate my old modem.
About 15 minutes later I once again had internet and a landline phone, I then returned the ARRIS to Best Buy on the same day that I purchased it. I wasted a lot of time on trying to get a piece of equipment to function.
Maybe it was just my bad luck to get one of what may be a small percentage of Surfboard T25s that can not be activated. Very aggravating experience. I feel lucky that I have internet back thanks to my old reliable modem.
Great modem with capability for Comcast voice/phone service, however. I am nearly convinced that Comcast intentionally makes it painfully difficult to use your personally OWNED equipment. It took no less than 6 submissions of the MAC ID to Comcast BY THE COMCAST TECHNICIAN at my house before it finally came online.
The handset icon for the phone service was also lit up for a few days, however I did not have a phone to connect at the time. However a day or two before connecting a phone to the phone jack on the modem, the handset icon was no longer active.
Sure enough, when connecting my phone to the modem, there was no dial tone. After getting passed around to about 4 other support techs, nothing improved. I was told by the last tech that the issue would be corrected and the service will be online within 2-3 hours.
LOL That’s how the get you off the call. Next morning, still no service. I waited 2 days before dealing with Comcast support again, got passed around a few times again, but finally ended up with a tech that discovered that the MTA MAC ID (for the voice service) was not even populated for some reason.
Once he populated it, the modem rebooted. the phone worked, but then the internet service was offline. Fortunately he was able to re-submit the MAC ID for the internet service and finally all has been online and stable.
It really does appear as if they want you to regret attempting to use your own modem and not pay them the additional monthly rental fee for their equipment. Most people that I know would have given up and gone that route, which is only beneficial to Comcast and not their subscribers.
Love the modem and would definitely recommend! Good luck with Comcast, and don’t give up. Just keep trying and they will be the ones who eventually give up and allow your equipment to operate.
This modem has worked as advertised to this point. It was purchased for my elderly mother so that she could have telephone service. It is the same brand device that we use in our home for internet connection, and was recommended by the Best Buy staff member I spoke with.
The only issue I have with it is the price. It appears that in order to get voice capability for phone service, an expensive modem for internet service, which is unnecessary in my Mom’s case, is the only choice.
This was the least expensive modem with voice capability that I could find. It has worked perfectly so far.

Works great! Pairing this with a Netgear Orbi RBR50 mesh system, with Comcast 600Mbps internet. Upon using the Netgear app to test my speeds I once got a 617 down/7 up. Testing with Speed Test I got a similar number.
Setup was simple to get rid of the $15 rental fee. I just unplugged the XF modem/router, plugged in the Arris via LAN to my laptop, and when trying to connect via Firefox it detected the new modem and started the setup.
After about 15 min it detected the phone line of service and I was online! Easy! Didn’t even need to call their customer service*** ***Do not use the XF app to on Android or iOS. I can’t recommend it.
It’s ability to set up my modem required very specific criteria: first, I needed to have a a modem and router setup prior to changing the old modem for the new one. Then, without disconnecting the router, I would need to switch out the XF modem with the new one then try connecting to the network again.
The app would then work, saying I would need to set up my new modem with XF. BUT, if don’t want to set it up with a new wireless system (like I did this time), there’s no way you can use the app to setup just the modem since there’s no active wireless system available to connect to.
And while I was on caller support they kept advertising the app, but not providing ample solutions to trying to connect me to the internet. Besides that, modem is working great! Save yourself $180 a year and setup a 3rd party modem.
I ordered this for my daughter moving back to an apartment near campus for the new school year. I found the power cord missing when I open the brand new box so I cannot install the cable modem. Fortunately, I live not too far from campus and brought another cable from home the next day.
I contacted Arris support and tried to get a replacement cord but they offered no help at all. So the packaging error and the poor support are the main reason for the 2 stars. I could return this to store but I cannot exchange for another one as it is only available online.
The set up is easy though once you have it connected to a router and has a device connected to it. Within 15 minutes after plugging it in, it is up and running using Xfinity. Of course, you need to have the service set up ahead of time first.
The performance is okay for the 200Mbps service we choose. It has two voice ports if you want a land line, however, there are cheaper VOIP options. This modem is pretty bulky (but very light). It doubles the size of SB8200 that I use at home.
Set up was easy IF you really follow all the directions. I watched a YouTube video for this exact model (SBV3202) which was MORE helpful than the written quick start guide. I connected the Ethernet cable directly from modem to laptop for the setup.
I had to wait 10 to 15 minutes for all the lights to become solid before completing the setup on the laptop. (If I remember correctly the Tel 1 light never came on solid until after the entire setup was complete).
I never had to call Xfinity. Remote Laptop activation worked perfectly. Once finished, Tel 1 light came on. I then Connected Ethernet cable from modem to my wireless router. Since then the modem has been functioning perfectly with no interruptions.
Happy to be saving modem rental fee. Hoping this modem functions well for a long time.

Purchased this CM700 32X8 DOCSIS 3. 0 modem to replace a 1 year old Arris Surfboard 32X8 DOCSIS 3. 0 Modem. The Arris had failed within 1 month of purchase – which Arris replaced with (seemed like) a refurbished unit.
9 months later – still under warranty – Arris refused to replace because it was the same problem(?)!. Replaced with the Netgear cm700. Quick easy setup. Speed seems quicker. Netgear has the app to control both modem & Nighthawk router.
Had 1 question & Netgear support answered quickly. Have always had good experiences with Netgear products. Only bought the Arris as it was recommended by a friend as ‘better bang for the buck’. Never again.
This modem paired with the Nighthawk router gives great wifi coverage throughout the 2 story home – no dead spots.
Bought the modem in March to try and avoid paying monthly modem fees with xFinity. The modem worked flawlessly until 5 months later in August when it suddenly stopped connecting with the xFinity service.
All troubleshooting narrowed the problem down to the modem (an xFinity modem connects fine). Trying to get an RMA with Netgear has been extremely frustrating. Netgear seems intent in throwing as many hurdles in front until you finally just give up.
Congratulations Netgear in getting my money for a modem that only lasted 5 months. It’s a shame, too. I used to like Netgear equipment, even for use at a company where I decide on equipment purchases as their IT Director.
The NETGEAR- 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3. 0 Cable Modem Is SPECTACULAR! The performance has made a HUGE difference in my gaming & internet experience. For the price you just can’t beat it. The size is actually a bit smaller than I expected which is good as it fits PERFECTLY right where I need it.
Before I purchased this modem the problems I was having while gaming was very frustrating. It was to the point of INSANITY! I called my Internet provider and we took my speed test which was ridiculous for the amount of GBPS I was paying for each month.
Even the Customer service Rep was shocked. She then affirmed the fact that I needed a new modem thus I told her of the NETGEAR -32 X 8 DOCSIS 3. 0 in which I had seen some good reviews for. Additionally It’s compatible with my internet service provider.
Upon receiving this modem it was a breeze to set up, I simply called my ISP & read the numbers/letters model etc. All done within 3 minutes. We ran the speed test & WHAT A TREMENDUS DIFFERENCE this modem made! Within minutes I was gaming like I hadn’t gamed in years.
This modem is the wisest investment I’ve ever made to accompany my hardware. The delivery time was Incredible as I had ordered it one evening & the modem was delivered to my door the next afternoon at 1:00 pm.
Overall I’m EXTREMELY PLEASED with the performance, size & look of the NETGEAR-8 DOCSIS 3. 0 Cable Modem & it’s perfect for my Ethernet set up.
The SURFboard SBV3202 is a DOCSIS 3. 0 modem with 2 lines of Voice over IP, certified to work with internet provider Xfinity*. With 32 downstream and 8 upstream channels, 2 telephony ports, plus a 1 Gigabit Ethernet port, its perfect for cable internet speed plans up to 800 Mbps.
Add a battery backup (sold separately) and never lose phone connectivity during power outages. It痴 the perfect solution for a home or small business.
Just what we needed to replace my rented Comcast/Xfinity modem. Works fine. Took a few phone calls to Xfinity to get it activated but it was well worth it. This model supports teleports if you are paying for a home phone line.
Please note that this is a modem. We already have our own router. We cannot locate a reset button. Hopefully it continues to work well and there will never be a need to unplug and plug it back in.
Nighthawk Multi-Gig Speed Cable Modem by NETGEAR supports link aggregation to deliver true multi-gig internet speeds. It improves your Internet connections and provides smooth online streaming and gaming.
Backwards compatibility with previous DOCSIS standards and works right of the box with Internet cable services like XFINITY from Comcast, Cox and Spectrum. The Nighthawk CM1100 Multi-Gig Cable Modem is built for Gigabit cable internet service plans available today and ready for future upgrades.
This is on sale at my favorite club store, I like and had very good luck with Netgear products. I’m changing it to the next level up because Comcast’s certification is only up to 800 Mbps. I read some of the negative reviews, especially from a so-called “electrical engineer “ who couldn’t make it do what he wanted.
A true electrical engineer would know that this modem is designed for locations with up to two IP addresses; it’s not a switch, it’s not a router. Basically, again, for businesses or homes which need or prefer to have two IP addresses.
I had complained with Comcast because everyone from customer service to tech support didn’t know this as well. If you need an extra IP address, it may be difficult finding someone who understands. Otherwise, when you take the human defective thought out of the equation, it’s an awesome modem for homes with midrange internet speed requirements.
Again, it’s the limits for comcast which made me upgrade to a faster modem.
Purchased the CM1100 because it specifically advertised “Gigabit Ethernet Ports – Fastest wired speeds to connect your router or computer. Create two home networks both capable of gigabit speeds and aggregate for the fastest Multi-Gig speeds” and box also indicated “2 Gigabit Ethernet Ports”.
It does have 2 ports BUT apparently only supports one home network (doesn’t act like an internal ethernet switch). I wanted to connect a router to one port and use the other port to hardwire connect to a computer.
I am an electrical engineer and after trying to get both to work for over a day (note: getting one to work would somehow disable the other network) I called customer support thinking the problem was perhaps due to IP addressing and modem configuration.
The router I was connecting to was a Netgear WiFi6 mesh. My frustration grew when they told me that it had nothing to do with IP addressing, the second LAN port was only for link aggregation and there was no way to connect two home networks directly to the modem.
Whether the CM1100 description was misleading or customer support was ignorant really doesn’t matter…it is inexcusable and is in part the reason for the 2 stars. The other reason for the 2 stars is because of the effort I had to put in to circumvent this hidden modem limitation by getting a separate ethernet switch and incorporating house wiring.
1Joe gave this a bad review because he is incompetent and doesn’t know anything about networking. It has nothing to do with the device. If a device is only a modem, not a router/modem combo, it has to connect directly to a router.
A modem has no routing capability. That’s what a ROUTER is for. It is not netgears fault this “electrical engineer” doesn’t understand simple home networking.
The Comcast Xfinity Gigabit cable modem is one of the best on the market. It is very fast, reliable, and easy to use. The only downside is that it is a bit expensive. However, it is worth the price if you need the speed and reliability.
