20 Best Cable Modem For Gigabit Internet (2022 Updated)

After moving and having our internet service upgraded I finally decided to upgrade my 10 year old Arris 6241. I was looking at this modem and the Arris S33, but price played a role in selecting this modem as it had similiar specs and was cheaper.

I was a little reluctant at first after reading some reviews that complained about disconnects, but went ahead with the purchase and I don’t regret it. The initial setup with Comcast was a real pain, but that’s an Xfinity issue, not Motorola.

The instructions want you to visit a website, but I had issues getting it to accept the modem so when I called I could only ever get an automated system and never was able to speak to a live person. So much for good customer service, thanks Comcast.

Luckily after about 10 minutes I was able to get the modem working on the network. It restarted a few times on its own initially but I think this was due to updates from Comcast. My old Arris was only capable of download speeds of 275 mbps and my new service contract was for 600 mbps.

My first speedtest on this modem got me up to 705 mbps. I’ve tested it several times since and it remains rock solid around 700 mbps every time. It’s a little larger than the Arris modems, but it does seem to run a little cooler.

It gets warm, but no where near as hot as the Arris. The biggest plus of this modem over something like an Arris 8200 is the 2. 5 gbps port on the back. You won’t need link aggregation to get higher speeds and it gives you a little future proofing.

If you’re looking to upgrade your modem or simply buy your own to avoid the rental fee this one is a solid choice.

I use WOW ISP and I found that my older Linksys Cable Modem was bottle necking a bit. I also realized it was not a DOCSIS 3. 1 and would not allow for me to upgrade my internet speeds to the 1 gig service.

So I researched some options and found this Motorola fit all of the options I was looking for and the download speeds without breaking the bank. I loved my Linksys because it was easy to setup and compatible with my router.

I initially had some thoughts about switching to a Motorola cable modem, mainly setting up and quality. I’ve had some issues with other Motorola products in the past, so I did purchase an extended warranty with BestBuy for ease of mind.

Well, as of now, about a month old, it was very easy to setup and go. And my speeds have dramatically improved, even during the heavy usage hours. I would typically get 50-75 mbps download speeds and now I can get double to triple that consistently.

And so far, there has not been any hiccups. This cable modem does not come with WIFI. I intentionally purchased this without WIFI. Units with WIFI are roughly about $50 more. I would recommend this unit if you are just looking for a high speed cable modem.

And just a note, I am a basic user and not an electronics expert.

This is a well built product. Its body made from a very light and yet very durable material. I love the gray color which also enhance its sleek look design. What I like most about its design is that there are many ventilation holes on both side which would allow hot heat to easily escape.

You’ll need a DOCSIS 3. 1 modem to guarantee gigabit speeds from most cable ISPs, and the MB8611 is also backward compatible with gigabit internet on networks that still use the DOCSIS 3. 0 standard.

Don’t get a gigabit modem unless you already have gigabit service. I am replacing a working Netgear – Orbi Tri-Band AC2200 Mesh WiFi System with 32 x 8 DOCSIS 3. 0 Cable Modem built-in due to the modem as contributing to the sometime unstable/bad latency, whether I was on a video calls, gaming, web browsing or whatever my internet connection would drop on randomly but now with this product my internet is much faster and staying at my internet plan allowed max most of the time which is at around 600mb/s, it is not a super fast internet speeds plan but O can definitely tell the difference with this modem! I am highly recommend this model to anyone especially those that has gig+ service.

I’ve had this for 2 months and it’s been okay. Pros: Gigabit Easy set up Cons: Interface is slow and cumbersome Very short range To amplify the short range, we live in a roughly 10 year old house, but put on the second floor office space at the front of the house, it is unable to provide coverage to the back two bedrooms.

I had to put a repeater in the hallway about 15 feet from the router to reach those bedrooms. It cannot penetrate the downstairs, not even the rooms directly below it. I ended up buying a second cheap wifi router to use downstairs, one with external antennas that provide full coverage to the downstairs with full bars on both 2.

4 and 5GHz channels. I did need to put another repeater just inside the garage to reach the TV we have out there, but I had to buy 3 other devices to get whole home coverage (I had not really expected the garage to be reached by the base router, but I expected the main rooms in the house to be covered) at a cost of almost $180, and this is on top of hooking up the ethernet in the house to lessen the wifi load.

For the slow interface, it takes close to a minute for each page to load, which means if you can’t recall which tab something is under, it can take quite some time to check and change settings. I’m still trying to figure out if I can connect this through my modem I had to get for wifi calling.

I have Xfinity and for a couple of weeks now everything was fine with the cable line split coming out of the wall, but the streaming app stopped working this morning, presumably because the signal isn’t coming out of the registered modem.

But I can’t find anything online and after 20 minutes gave up going through the interface.

Top of the line Arris Cable Gateway, supporting 32×8 channels, DOCSIS 3. 1 standard, Wi-Fi 6 with with one 2. 5 Gbps port. Despite these impressive stats the LAN component has numerous problems that Arris tech support wouldn’t bother to help me figure out.

Issue #1, 2 of my laptops use an almost identical model Intel wireless adapter. Prior to switching out my previous model Arris gateway both of these laptops connected wirelessly fine. These 2 laptops see other neighbors networks in range just not this gateway.

The workaround was to uninstall the Intel Wi-Fi driver and use a generic Microsoft driver. Arris support simply told me to contact Intel. 2nd issue is Chromecast doesn’t allow me to cast anything to it via Ethernet, only wirelessly but my Wi-Fi signal in this room is poor to the gateway.

The previous Arris gateway allowed me to cast via Ethernet with Chromecast. Once again Arris didn’t help but referred me to Google. I should mention that I’m an A+ certified Systems Administrator, used to troubleshooting problems but this one was impossible to figure out, even after hard resetting the gateway, updating firmware on all devices.

Most users that aren’t too technical might not have such problems as me. I’m a power user, for the price I expect this product or support to surpass my expectations. I returned this and went with Netgear Nighthawk, everything works perfectly now, I’m through with Arris products and terrible tech support.

I really really wanted to like this device, and the one issue aside that I had with it, which was a MAJOR one, kept me from being able to. I purchased this to use the faster 2. 5GB port and while I was getting faster speeds than the 1GB I subscribe to, the issue I had was that my wife could no longer access her VPN (Cisco AnyConnect) while working from home.

I tried to troubleshoot with Arris but they were zero help. I ended up returning and purchasing another one thinking maybe I’d gotten a dud; same result. Hours of online research and not a single solution that could resolve.

If you need to use Cisco AnyConnect (or as best I can tell, ANY VPN) this may not be the device for you. Also tried a Netgear CAX80 and had the same exact issues so it has to be something related to these “all in one” devices.

Bummer, as I liked this device, it looked cool, it was a modem and router all in one, but in the end, I couldn’t keep it.

Upgrade on an Xfinity/Comcast Motorola Surfboard from over a decade ago, has seemed to function without issue since day 1! Next planned purchase: a WiFi router upgrade that has LACP-IEEE 802. 3ad link aggregation to take advantage of the secondary gigE port.

I really appreciate that it even offers that, even though I prefer being in areas which have FTTH and 10gigE or better (SGI was doing such things in the 1990s after all, and Mellanox has 200Gbps adapters, whilst even Intel is playing catch up with 100Gbps ethernet now and NICs don’t cost much more than these ancient slow DOCSIS cable modems reliant on intrinsically slower than fiber and optical light based interconnects, copper wiring.

) Albeit, in SOHO consumer gear, that means another $300 or $400 in equipment just to theoretically get to 2Gbps, which I am more or less certain Comcast doesn’t guarantee or charges through the nose for, meanwhile well over a decade ago I was paying less in gear per gigabit ethernet port with fiber trunking from better ISPs, but when in hell, at least make it run faster! So, this is a definitive upgrade from the older modem.

The power switch, is also, wonderful, because in my experience, it is necessary to power cycle the customer premises equipment with this ISP quite often, and having to gothrough the hassle of unplugging the previous modem, just to power cycle it, was even more of a chore.

Good upgrade! Better upgrade would be moving to an area which has fiber to the home based ISPs e. g. municipal fiber for $500/mo/10Gbps in Atherton or $50/mo/1Gbps, and even cheaper offerings from Sonic and Cruzio in Santa Cruz and places such as Petaluma, but I do not currently reside in such regions as the real estate costs are also high.

I have been using my Netgear Modem for less than a month but so far it has been very reliable and has sped up my internet significantly. My internet service provider (ISP) was charging me $20 a month to use theirs and it was garbage! I bought this for less than I pay yearly to the ISP and I own my modem now.

It feels good to own the piece of machinery that is processing my personal information. I never felt secure leasing a modem from my ISP. On a side note, I also purchased a Nighthawk Router that sends the signal from that modem to all my devices and the user interface is very easy to navigate no matter what your experience level.

I purchased this cable modem a week ago. Staples promised delivery in two days, and it was here in two days! It took about an hour to set it up and get the service provider to activate it (obviously the time consuming part was getting thru to the provider).

A word of advice, call in the morning, less phone traffic. And a word about phones, if you get your voice service thru your internet provider, you’ll need a cell phone to activate this modem (or any other modem I would imagine).

This unit replaced an eight year old Linksys N unit that was still working great, I just wanted the latest security features and figured it was time. This unit only has one cat 5 port, so you will need a router to service more than one device.

My wi-fi speed was about the same as the linksys unit, but I have my desk top hard wired to the router, and I notice about a 25% increase in speed on that. I’m a bit PO’d at Staples, though it is not their fault.

I paid $140 for this unit, and two days later it was listed for $99. 00!!! Just my luck! One thing you should know about this or any other voice modem. Contrary to what tech advisers may tell you, this unit will not work with Spectrum Voice services, you will need to use their modem for that.

It will work fine for their internet service, but you will need to keep the Spectrum modem for telephone service. Don’t spend the extra money for a voice modem (like I did!). I have had Spectrum techs tell me that Spectrum doesn’t charge rent for the modem just for voice service, but the jury is still out on that.

I connected my laptop directly to my new CM500V after installation; BOOM! It immediately activated through my ISP’s web activation page! NO calls to my ISP! (That alone is worth it’s weight in gold!) Then I connected my Netgear wireless router to my new CM500V.

I decided to change my router’s LAN IP subnet in order to have connectivity to the management page of both devices (because they both used the same subnet by default). Now my new CM500V is providing fast internet (clocked at 60 Mbps, which my ISP advertises) to my home network of 3 laptops and 2 streaming TVs.

The VOIP phone also works great; it is our home phone and is nice & clear. If you need a voice cable modem, I highly recommend the CM500V! I was surprised by the ease of installation & setup. It is excellent value for money!.

I bought this so that my 90 year old mother could have a landline phone available in her apartment after having cell phone issues for a number of days. The cell phone towers in her area were undergoing repair and she was unable to call anyone without going outside.

She needed this modem so she could hook up a phone that was already a part of her cable “package”. The modem was easy to set up, however due to the configuration of her service I had to also buy a cable splitter and an extra cable so I could hook up her phone, TV and DVD player.

not a big deal but worth knowing if you use this modem. The cost seems to be in line with similar modems but NETGEAR is a know name and I’ve always had good luck with their products. Bottom line, I had everything hooked up in less than an hour including being on the phone with the cable provider so they could detect the modem.

Very easy process.
