20 Best Buttercream Frosting For Sugar Cookies (2022 Updated)

I bought this frosting to try for the first time and was extremely disappointed. I love the concept of a food product that is vegan, non-GMO, gluten free and made with coconut oil. However, the consistency of this frosting, in my opinion, was waxy and my container had large globules of poorly mixed fat showing in every teaspoonful I tried.

I couldn’t taste any chocolate at all, just grainy wax. I read other very favorable reviews, but I had to speak up and share my view of the product. I know it isn’t as healthy, but I will return to using the national brand frostings for taste and texture.

Do not refrigerate this product. Really the only complaints I’ve read about this product that are bad are based around it being hard. Well it is made with coconut oil as a main ingredient. Have you ever put coconut oil in the fridge? Haha that’s your answer.

I kept it on the shelf and consumed within listed suggested time and it worked perfect! I got the cream cheese frosting from them. The flavor was great, not too sweet which makes sense because of the ingredients and listed sugars in the nutritional facts but honestly for me it worked great.

Just use a little bit of common sense and you’ll have a great experience :).

We were so excited to try this out with the kids for their Saint Valentine’s Day cookie decorating party. We were completely disappointed. It has the consistency of crisco or candle wax. It is basically flavorless except for the slightest whispered aftertaste of something sweet, but not enough to reflect the fact that it’s supposed to be identified as frosting.

It had the same consistency flavor as if we had coated the cookies in chapstick. Epic fail. I chose to give them 2 stars one for being organic 1 for being vegan. I know it’s hard to make it with both of those specifications, but they really need to dial this product back to the research development phase of production.

I received the Simple Mills organic frosting with coconut oil awhile ago. The flavor i received was chocolate. This frosting is corn free, gluten free, gum free, non gmo and vegan. The container size i received is 10oz.

The ingredients list is organic palm shortening, organic powdered sugar, organic dutch cocoa powder, organic coconut oil, organic tapioca starch, vanilla extract, organic rosemary extract, salt, monk fruit extract.

When you open the container of frosting the product looks dry. But then you mix it up it will turn smooth and creamy. You need to refrigerate after opening according to container. The frosting is a dark brown color.

It does not have a strong chocolate smell. I found the frosting is smooth and spreads very easily. I felt the taste of the frosting is a very light chocolate flavor. To me It tastes like cocoa powder.

I my self wished it was more sweeter chocolate flavor however. In all the frosting is great and I enjoyed it.

I was really excited to try this chocolate frosting from Simple Mills. The fact that it is organic, made without a long list of weird ingredients made it seem like it would be a great substitute for the sugar laden frosting I usually see/buy at the store.

I loved the packaging and the brands name really seemed to say it all. I opened the frosting and stirred it together really well, then went to taste this whipped texture frosting. Thats when I realized that maybe some of that sugar & butter really does help make a cocoa flavor.

This was missing something. It tasted like coconut oil and cocoa blended together without anything else. I brought it to my mother in law’s to use on a cake and asked her to try it. She said she liked the flavor, said it tasted a little chalky, but had a dark chocolate flavor that she thought was “ok”.

I let her keep the frosting. I think this could be a great product, just needs to re-work the ingredients and take it from cocoa to milk chocolate flavor.

This is absolutely my all time favorite icing!! I literally go through 3 boxes for one cake. When I make the cake, I don’t put the icing on the cake. I keep it in a separate bowl and keep it refrigerated when I’m not eating it.

This keeps the icing from melting on the cake. When I want a snack, I slice me a piece of cake and then scoop out a big pile of icing to go with it! This icing is the best, hands down, in my opinion.

I love this product! No one in my town carries this icing. I had used it for years in the past, and all of a sudden it cannot be found. Well, I found it on e-bay, it came in right in time for my birthday.

and went in the kitchen and baked my own dark chocolate cake with my Fluffy White Icing! What a hit, my grandkids had not tasted this icing. The cake didn’t last a day at my house! It is light, fluffy and delicious.

Very old fashioned and I will be ordering more of this icing. For those who don’t want all the heavy icing with shortening in it. this is the one for you. It will not keep for long, you want to eat it within a day or two, so easy, just add some boiling water, whip it up with your mixer until it stiffens up for spreading in the cake or cupcakes, and enjoy! So glad a found my favorite icing again.

This was my first time using this product. I needed it to decorate cookies. After following the directions on the box, I found the icing to be too thick to use on my cookies The directions suggested adding more water to thin the icing out.

Apparently I added too much water because the icing became too thin. Despite that, I used the icing to “flood” the cookies. It took quite some time for the icing to harden. In the end, the icing worked out and it did have a nice flavor.

Overall, enjoyed the cream. Would have preferred it be a little liter. Store only had the medium texture. Prepared icing as instructed on box and it came out about 90% accurate to what I was expecting.

The only other thing I would recommend is that it have a better flavor. Current basic flavoring taste very generic and chemically processed. I imagined you could probably use any of your own personal flavors if necessary but if you are looking for a white color pay attention to the color of your flavoring as many have color to them.

Try adding flavoring to a small amount to see if it changes the color of your icing before adding flavoring to the whole box.

This is great stuff, especially since it was on clearance for half the price. The taste is good, less mess than when I make from scratch (therefore much faster), and if you want chocolate just add cocoa and a little more liquid.

I used milk the first time; the second time I used water and liked the consistency much better. Works good in decorating tools, too.

Delicious!! I wasn’t sure about this since it was my first time using, but I was so happily surprised!! It tasted delicious. I loved that you can add certain things to change the consistency. Highly recommend.

I just frosted our Christmas breakfast danish with this cream cheese frosting. We’ve bought this brand several times over the years, but something is very wrong with this one. The canister says “great new taste” but it’s awful with a chemical/plastic like flavor and leaves a horrible after taste.

This doesn’t taste like any frosting I’ve ever had and definitely doesn’t taste like cream cheese. It’s not expired. Today is 12/24/2021 and the expiration date on the canister says Jan 25 2022. The batch code is 13:43 654 Something either went wrong at the factory or this “great new taste” is just a horrible new formula.

It’s too late to make a new danish, so no Christmas breakfast for us tomorrow. I’m so incredibly disappointed.

Your new formulation is really terrible and tastes as though someone spilled maraschino cherry juice in it. I bought more than one batch/can just in case the first one I got was spoiled or an anomaly.

I am known as the Cake Lady in several circles and my recipes have long been in demand. I have happily used and recommended your Duncan Hines “Classic Chocolate” for many, many years. (milk & dark chocolate as well on occasion) Your previous chocolate frostings were great tasting, easy, affordable and the only premade frostings I used.

Now, I tell everyone to make frosting from scratch or try another brand. My friends and I are truly missing your Classic Chocolate.

I have been buying Duncan Hines cream cheese frosting for ages and have always loved it. This time I didn’t realize until I opened it up at home that the can says “new great taste”. I can tell you one thing, the “new great taste”, is your new epic fail.

I fail to understand why companies that have awesome products that customers love and are loyal to change the recipes up and make them utterly inedible. Why mess with a good thing? 0/10 recommend this product.

I’d rather lick my bathroom floor than eat this absolutely vile “frosting”. Come on Duncan Hines, DO BETTER.

Extremely tasteful icing. Very sweet and creamy, has a little sugary crunch ad you bite into it. Goes fantastically well with a hone made carrot cake. Store in fridge but allow time for it to reach room temperature before spreading.

Good quantity in tub, will get a couple of cakes out of it. I bought this product as part of a promotion.

I ordered this for my daughters birthday cake as was short on time and reviews looked good. I’m not sure if I got a bad batch, but both tubs I used were absolutely horrible! the consistency was good but the taste was vile, can only describe it as ‘chemically’ I tried to disguise the flavour with extra icing sugar and vanilla but that did nothing to take away the awful taste; ultimately it ended up ruining the birthday cake, very disappointed….

Love the taste and texture! Tastes like fudge. So easy to pipe and doesn’t run or go too hard. Lovely chocolatey colour. Would love to buy a bigger tub! Have bought lots of times and will definately be buying more in future.

This product was purchased as part of a promotion. Great size product. The buttercream was really nice texture and great taste. (Slightly sweet but nice) me and the family would definitely recommend and buy again.

Was horrid. Removed lid and did a tester taste, no not nice, but to just make sure got my husband to taste, he did not know my reaction as was not in kitchen when I tasted. He duly tasted, and spat it out.

had to bin and make my own buttercream. Trouble is bought 2 tubs of vanilla and one of chocolate. The unopened vanilla and chocolate tubs sitting in pantry, will never be used.

Do NOT buy this product. My daughters birthday was ruined by the mess this stuff made. Literally just slid off the cake in a puddle. I was concerned when I began to frost the cooled cake layers as the frosting was very thin and drippy coming out of the container.

I have used the chocolate frostings on vanilla cakes with no problem but that was Pilsbury brand. This was a first time using vanilla frosting on a chocolate cake and it will be my last. We placed the cake in the refrigerator over night to help it set up.

Took it out and placed it on the table for the party and it looked okay so put the cover back on. By the time we were ready for cake and I removed the cover it was a total mess. This was inside a house, air conditioned to 74 degrees.

I had to run to the grocery store and spend extra money to buy expensive cup cakes for her party. I wish I could upload a photo for everyone to see as it was heartbreaking. I have used box mixes for years, all brands, and never had this happen.

First time using vanilla icing and it was a total disaster.

I have been hungry for a homemade carrot cake like my mom made, when I was growing up. It had to be two layer with rich cream cheese between layers and all over the outside. I should have known that if you make a homemade cake youd better make homemade frosting to satisfy that craving.

This frosting is good, dont get me wrong. Very creamy and easy to spread. I used 2 cans to get it thick all over. The flavor is good but the taste of cream cheese is too weak for a robust flavored cake.

Next time if not making it from scratch, I will combine it with real cream cheese to get the flavor Im looking for. I know that it will make a crust on the frosting instead of it staying as it is when you open the can but it also keeps the frosting from coming off on the press n seal I cover it with.

This is amazing! When I am in a hurry and don’t have the time to make my own buttercream; Wilton is the perfect pick. I would make the box bigger so it would make more. I am a repeat user of this product and will buy again.

It tastes like homemade without all the work.

I don’t know if different types of sprinkles have different names, so I will try to be descriptive and hope that the issue is clear. The image of this frosting shows traditional sprinkles in pastel colors.

Other frostings with sprinkles showed the super-hard sprinkles in fun shapes that may have been cuter than traditional sprinkles (there’s one with unicorns, adorable!), but nobody in my family likes those super-hard sprinkles.

So we got this frosting, with simple sprinkles in pastel colors. What arrived is frosting with the hard sprinkles shaped like little dots in bold colors. So we got the sprinkles nobody likes and they’re not even in cute shapes.

If what I got had been what was pictured, I would not have bought this and would have just bought vanilla frosting, since we’re throwing out the hard, dot-shaped sprinkles anyway. I do realize this isn’t a huge deal, but I’m disappointed and I figure I can warn anyone else that may choose this specific frosting with sprinkles because it appeared to be the only one with traditional sprinkles.

Pillsbury’s Funfetti Frosting is always a classic, but this is the sweetest twist for Valentine’s Day. The sprinkles are adorable (and delicious), and the frosting is a really pretty pink. I used less than half the container on an entire box of the coordinating cupcake mix.

The leftovers can be refrigerated to use at a later date!.

I like this icing. Needed the icing to set up quickly so we could transport easily. This sets up in about 15 minutes, getting progressively harder as you wait. You cut the tip to whatever thickness you want.

For children I would cut the tip at the second line so it is easier for them to squeeze out the frosting. Have them practice on a piece of plastic wrap first. It’s a beautiful vibrant red color. Can be used for string work, but work quickly.

For a beginner baker/decorator, the picture they have on the package of the decorated cupcake is definitely not what it looks like when you use the tip. (maybe it’s just me?) It was sad that there was no directions on it either.

When I first opened it to try it, it was very runny so I would suggest trying it out elsewhere than your baked goods. I got it to work by kneading it a whole lot and put it in the freezer for about 5 minutes just to let it get to the consistency you want.

Once you practice with the decorating tips they give, you are able to make them look pretty good. I was able to cover 2 dozen cupcakes with just one packet but used another one just to add more icing.

The icing tastes good as well – very sweet.

Super easy to use – I would smoosh it all around in the bag with your fingers and then push out a bit before the start of decorating. Initially, the frosting is a little bit watery. Once you eliminate that it worked like a dream.

The ability to move between stars and a straight line was an added bonus. The taste was pleasantly surprising.

I agree with the reviewers and I could also eat this by the spoonful. The gritty texture makes me really feel as though this is cookie dough and not frosting. After trying this frosting, I immediately began thinking of what types of cupcakes will get this treatment immediately.

I don’t know who came up with the idea for this type of frosting but that person needs a raise so they can continue thinking outside the box of the regular run of the mill frostings on the markets by other brands! I knew I loved Duncan Hines for a reason.

Casually strolling, high, through the bakery isle of the local store while hiding from my wife as she is trying to get me summer ready with a diet. I saw the wonderful goodness that is fat man heaven.

I initially bought 3 cans. Went through 1 can in 2 days dipping animal crackers like I was a kid eating dunkaroos. this frosting is literal diabetic coma crack. I wish I could just buy a case of it instead of having to try to catch the store when they happen to have it in stock.

im pretty sure the only thing better would be an icing that is the middle frosting of Fudge Rounds.

I used this cookie dough frosting on top of my homemade chocolate chip cookie dough brownies and WOW! It is literally so delicious and I love the smooth texture. I am seriously obsessed. I need to always keep a jar of this frosting on hand.

It would be great on cookies and cupcakes as well.
