I ordered this because it was cheap and I was waiting for my Lew’s KVD to be delivered in 2 weeks. I wanted to fish! I was very impressed with this rod and reel especially for under $20. I thought it would be a throw away or parked in the garage but it goes with me on my fishing trips.
Both the rod and reel have great action. The only thing I would change is that the rod has no specs on it so it is a guessing game but it handles like a medium/fast action rod.
For the money spent, this rod and reel combination is excellent. There are much more expensive options that I am sure deliver higher quality, but if you want a decent starter rode and reel, this is a great choice.
Broke on the first fishing trip. Very disappointing. Would have returned it if I didn’t have to return in person in the store. Poor quality. Reading the good reviews, I wonder if I just got damaged item at the first place.

The rod was really cooked! I’m very familiar with rod splines as I have built many rods in my day but this rod is just plain dog leg crooked. If I had seen this rod in person I would not have purchased it.
It is a 6 1/2, 2 piece rod and it arrived in one piece in a 8 ft long tube open at one end and it fell out of the tube when I picked it up from my porch! Not sure if it could have been damaged or bent from falling out of the tube during shipping like it did for me all though I don’t see how that could happen with out breaking it.
There was no packing slip with it. I purchased it for a friend as a gift but didn’t give it to him. Instead I went to Wallmart and bought another ugly stick that was not messed up to give him. If I had a packing slip and a reasonable way to send it back I would.
It looks to me like it could be a factory reject or something. I was very dissatisfied with the purchase.
Bought the rod before the price hike. Really liked it I caught a 30 pound black drum on the beach at Ft Pickens near Pensacola. Have since caught several medium sized reds with it. Ok, great! Great action for 10 pound line.
Then last Friday at Dauphin Island throwing a 2 oz surf weight the rod broke (snapped) above the large first guide on the forward swing of the cast. I was somewhat shocked to say the least. That’s never happened with me and this brand before.
Love me some Ugly Sticks! Anyway, I have 2 more of the same rods. Might consider adding a little more backbone toward the butt of the rod.
I brought 2 of these Combos a while back and they are working great. I’ve used them for both Fresh and Saltwater and the reels seem to hold up just fine provided you do the proper care after fishing.
These are light and you can feel the hits when they strike. The Rod itself is a beast I’ve had both of them get snagged and put them through some really tough bends and neither of them snapped, Uglystix holding true to there name.
These rods are a beast. Only Issue I had with the reel was I fell and landed with the reel hitting a boulder and bent the bail. Thats on me not the company, I was able to bend it back into place and make it work again so they can take some abuse :-).

item came with no packing material reel bounced around in box bending the eyes on pole , line was unraveled off reel , fixed all that. then the first time my girlfriend used it she set the hook on a 2 1/2 lbs bass and the pole snapped at the joint were the two pieces meet , not impressed will not order again.

It would have been nice to come with some instructions. I m pretty new to fishing, so it would have been nice to have some assurance I was putting it together correctly. Also, when trying to find the instructions online, I found I could have bought it $2 cheaper elsewhere.
been looking for rod and reel for wife. hot pink one of her favorite colors. not many around other than small snoopy type for younger kids. now she has one she can call her own. good quaility good price.
Enjoy a marriage of style and performance with the Shakespeare Agility Low Profile Baitcast Combo. It includes a reel and rod. A huge range of innovative features might just make this combo a personal favorite.
The reel features 2+1 Instant Anti-Reverse bearings along with a brass drive and pinion gears for a smooth retrieve, even when you’re handling bigger game fish. A ported aluminum spool reduces bulk, and it’s machined for precision performance.
The graphite composite Shakespeare baitcast rod offers a lightweight design that casts accurately and easily while providing enhanced ruggedness. Hybrid Tech Grips lend a solid hold for sure hook sets.
Its magnetic cast control slows the spool’s rate of spine, reducing backlash. The cast control is adjustable to suit your preferences. This Shakespeare rod comes in a range of sizes.
Third rod broken in a row. Friendly staff no problem returning one of the last two purchased. The other was only broken about three inches, decided I could add a new rod tip just so one was usable. Love Walmart and the products but, someone should look into the packaging for online orders.
The boxes they were delivered in were not damaged, seems like rods were broken off before packaging since broken ends aren’t in box? Fed ex deliverer said it happens all the time, this not good for business.
I live in upstate NY and bought this as a Christmas gift for someone as a new comer to bait casting. Upon arrival I of course had to take it out and inspect it and I was pleased that it was undamaged.
The reel is very smooth and operated with ease and should be no problem to dial in. The pole seems like the action is a little heavier than I thought it would be but as I said, I’m in upstate NY so there’s not many places to check it out, especially since it’s not mine.
All in all I think it’s a great value for the money. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because I’m not sure about the pole.
I had the rod and reel combo for about three or four years before I broke it (fell off a horizontal rod holder and snapped in half), and I have nothing bad to say about the combo. I went in to buying this rod with very, very little knoledge on baitcasters, but this rarely showed when using the combo.
I have taken this to the ocean, and never had any problems with rust, or the reel seizing up, I, at this point in time, almost never get backlash or birds nest with this reel, unlike some of my other reels, and am impressed with the goodness of the combo, even though I got it for $50.
Nothing bad to say, this is an excellent choice for a first time baitcaster user.
Save money and land yourself a superb near-shore fishing setup with the Penn Squall Lever Drag Conventional Combo. The rapid-adjusting lever drag on the Squall reel sits below the top of the reel frame, so its out of the way of line loops and slack line.

This setup retails for $260 just about everywhere online and in-store. Happened to do a search and it came up at Walmart for $215. Confirmed it was the same make/model I was looking for and ordered right away.
Arrived sonnet than estimated and in good condition. I will say though that the packing was sub-par for a fishing rod and had zero padding in the box, so it was dumb luck that it arrived undamaged. Would order this again and the price was excellent.
Bought this rig last year for Mahi/Wahoo fishing in Charleston, SC. Love I can put it in stern rod holder and run it long while trolling and have spinning reels in rocket launchers to create a great (small) spread.
Getting ready for this season and will be getting another soon. Store staff helped me get this thing set with 50# yellow mono. love the sound of the drag too. Great trolling stick for larger game.
I have a number of rod and reel combos but the Penn Squall is by far the better of them all. The design of the drag lever makes for easy access and quick setting, ready for the fight. Plus simple things like two levels of clicker volume/resistance make Squall my favorite reel to use.
I can’t wait until June fishing for sails, cobia, mahi to give it the best experience.
The Throttle II spinning reels feature 11 bearings, a new premium look and increased value. Throttle II borrows PT technologies like R. E. D. and Miscast II spool and new machined spool. This 20sz reel is custom matched with a 6’6 inch medium power rod with an IM8 graphite construction blank and All-Weather polymer comfort grip.
I used to think Quantum rods and reels were good but this combo ended my loyalty to them. This was the most expensive combo I have bought for myself. I purchased this combo on July 4 2022. The rod itself is decent (thus the 1 star) but the reel is garbage.
Had 8 lbs line spooled on to the reel. I went on a fishing trip on July 14 ( a 7 hour drive from home). After 30 minutes of fishing my line was so badly twisted that when I would flip the bail the line would unwind from the reel and twist upon itself into an big mess.
I thought maybe the line was the problem so I went and bought some new 6 lbs line. Spooled the line onto the reel as I have done for 35 years and never had line twist issues before. Then I headed out fishing in the boat.
Within 10 minutes the twisting had begun. I tried the “let all your line out behind a boat with just swivel on while trolling to remove line twist” trick. 4 times in 2 hours. The trick does work to get the twists out of your line but they come back very quickly with this reel.
It seems like the ANTI-TWIST on the reel doesn’t work at all and actually twists up your line. Bottom line is don’t waste your money on this rod and reel combo. Save yourself the frustration and stay away from this rod and reel combo (unless you really enjoy wasting your time untangling your line).
I bought a couple of these this summer. Both arrived broken so I exchanged them. Once I finally used I noticed they were all the small size reel that apparently only comes with me 28” combo. I contacted my local store and the manager made it right by offering the right sized reels for a straight up exchange or to be purchased at a discounted price and I keep both.
I opted to buy them and put the others on some other rods. The rods and both sizes of reels are nice and work well. The smaller sized reels have noticeably less drag. The larger sized ones feel like more of a 1500-2500 size rather than a 1000 size but I’m not complaining.
Thanks James for making it right. I wish they’d update the information on the link so others aren’t left with the same problem. I think more the money if they came as advertised they’d be a great combo.
With the smaller reel it’s still an OK deal and if they’re on sale it’s great.
Been using the combo for a few months now. The rod is a little heavier than I expected, but the action is perfect. It has plenty of power combined with a moderate action, making it perfect for crankbaits and chatterbaits.
The all-time classic easy-to-use fishing combo, now with a 20% faster retrieve! The Zebco 33 Spincast Combo is a great rod and reel setup for anglers at any level. The reel features a quick 4. 1:1 gear ratio, industrial -grade stainless steel covers, tough all-metal gears, smooth ball-bearing drive with dual ceramic pickup pins, QuickSet multi stop anti-reverse, Bite Alert , and precision MicroFine dial-adjustable drag.
Reversible right/left retrieve; pre-spooled with 10-lb. Cajun Line. It’s matched to a sturdy 2-piece, 6′ medium-action fiberglass rod with smooth-running D-ring guides and a comfortable EVA handle. All-metal gears.
Smooth ball-bearing drive. Dual ceramic pickup pins. QuickSet multi stop anti-reverse. Reversible right/left retrieve. Pre-spooled with 10-lb. line Rod features: 6’0″.
I bought this fishing rod based upon its longevity and positive reviews. The Zebco 33 has been around for a long time. I am a new angler and felt comfortable getting this rod before I moved up to something more advanced.
The price was right and so far it has served me adequately. The reasons for the three stars are the lack of printed directions and the tendency when casting that the top section of the rod will pop out.
This has happened twice, and it is disconcerting. I have caught some nice bass with it using traditional rigs and baits including a topwater lure but I wish it had more umpf for longer casts, but maybe that is part of the deal with this rod and reel.
It is an excellent rod for a newbie. But it didn’t quite meet my expectations.
Bought this pole last week, it’s casting capability is terrible to line seems to snag up while casting. While reeling in my catch the entire face of the reel fell apart leaving me to hand pull in my catch by the line.
Taking it back tomorrow, I would not recommend this pole.
2 days ago I pulled a 21. 7 lb. Blue cat out of an area lake. This combo handled it like a beast. I KNOW it could have handled much larger. Great buy for the price and one really can’t go wrong with a Zebco.
Kit includes spare anodized aluminum spool and a durable neoprene reel cover. I am writing this letter to say thank you. About three years ago I purchased the Penn Spinfisher VI 4500BLS and it has been a very nice addition to my surfcasting arsenal. The Slammer 3 also has been great as well, but I really was hoping that there would be a bailess version.
After using them season upon season I want to start this letter off by thanking your company, but also asking for our voices in the surf to be heard. I have been fishing the surf on the east coast for over 30 years.
In that time I have owned three 704’s and two 706’s and they handled most of my surf fishing from the 90’s through the early 2000’s. In the past ten years I had to move away from Penn reels because the 704 and 706 did not handle braid as well as a Van Staal reels.
However, with the advancements made in the Slammer 3 and Spinfisher VI, I was really pleased and there has been some call back for a new and improved 704 and 706 across Stripers Online and the Surf Rats Ball forums.
While picking up a reel after having it serviced at a local shop, me and a few other customers all began to reminisce about our days with Penn reels. The one thing we all keep saying is “we wish we had sealed versions of the 704 and 706 that handled braid.
” Customers like us have a need for a fully or semi sealed reel and do not always want to purchase Van Staal. I know from experience that if I could use my 704 or 706 while wetsuiting boulder fields in pounding surf that I would, but the advancements made by the Slammer 3 means that I would rather have that reel with me in those conditions.
As great as the Slammer 3 is, there is a nostalgia for the non-skirted reel design of the 704 and 706, which is very attractive to us as surfcasters. I am not sure what it is, but maybe because most of us grew up with them we gravitated towards that looks – and ultimately given the choice of buying a new Slammer 3 or a used Van Staal, many of us of will purchase the Van Staal because it has the look of the old Penn Z series.
I am writing this letter not to criticize in any way, but to see if there is any chance at all of an updated sealed or semi sealed 704 and 706 hitting the market. If those two models could be re-made with; an IPX of 6 or better (like the Slammer 3), improved line wrap (so it handles braid as well as the Slammer or Spinfisher VI) and come in bailess options for both sizes Penn would have a solid hold on the market again.
While I know we as surfcasters are a small minority and not a huge market, but there is no reason why Van Staal should be eating your lunch. The success of the Tsunami SaltX, the advent of Visser reels, as well as the success of the Slammer 3 should be indicators of that surfcasters are still a viable market – and we want something from Penn in the price range of $250 – $500 that can suit our needs for fishing and have the look and feel we gravitated to.
I really wish I could be part of making that happen as I just really have an affinity for my old Penn reels and want them to able to keep up with my fishing. I am not sure if anyone from Penn is interested in working with me on this, I am not expecting anything really, but I have been an angler who has used your product for thirty years and with over twenty years just dedicated to the surf as it is my number one passion in life I feel my feedback may be valuable.
Thank you for reading this. I hope that someday I can sell all my Van Staals and have Penn reels back in service with me keeping up with my fishing as I wetsuit boulders in pursuit of big bass.
I purchased a penn SSVI2500 in the beginning of 2020 for whenever I fished light tackle salt water. My initial feel of the reel was it had a solid feel to it, with a smooth drag and very precise gear rotation with the CNC gears.
This was a big step up from the battle II platform, which had die cast gears and only a sealed drag system, in which the SSVI provided more seals to protect your reel from saltwater splashes. The reel was then spooled with 15lb power pro braid and I would end up using 12-20lb mono leaders.
My first trip was in the north shore of Long Island when I had gone fishing for fluke (summer flounder) and it was handling the flatties and sea robins rather well, especially when they would yank down into structure.
After fishing, I simply would rinse the gear down with clean water, and kept going well. I would eventually take the reel out on flats and even in light surf with several instances where a wake or a wave would splash against it, but didn’t slow the performance.
I had only one jetty trip on it and it worked well with bluefish, despite being a rather small reel for the task of larger pelagics. The rod it paired with was a Fenwick HMG inshore rod in the 7’ Medium Fast version and it was well balanced.
This works well with many of the light st croix and jigging world rods as well. One tip I would highly recommend is to periodically oil and grease this reel, and if you ever dunk it, remember to open it up and check if there was any bit of intrusion.
I am highly satisfied with this reel after almost a whole year of use and I am ready to take it to Florida and test it on some good fish such as redfish, sea trout and snook.
The Pflueger President Spinning Combo offers unbeatable features and quality at a reasonable price. This combo is comprised of a President 10-bearing spinning reel and a very responsive, lightweight IM-8 rod.
The cork handle with full grip is complemented by the braid-ready aluminum spool that will make fishing a smooth and enjoyable experience.
Let’s be fair. If you buy a combo rod and reel for under 100 you shouldn’t expect premium performance even if it’s from a company like Pflueger. I really liked the action of this rod but what I couldn’t get over is the super cheap eyelets that they put on the rod.
Again, you get what you pay for and you can’t fault them for cutting costs somewhwre in order to get you this combo at this price. I ended up shaving all the eyelets off and putting on some nice ceramic eyelets and now this combo casts great.
As far as the reel goes its as smooth as butter. Couldn’t be happier. If you don’t have the ability to wrap new eyelets on a rod and want a good combo look elsewhere but if you do this is a really great combo that just needs a little upgrade that you can do on your own with minimal skill.
I bought the ultralight version of this and was immediately impressed with the smooth action of the reel as well as the fast action of the rod. Beautiful rod and reel. After about 3 weeks of use, the inner rings in the guides started to fall out.
The handle on the reel constantly comes loose, then with 4lb line and drag set low, the tip of the rod broke on a snag with a fairly innocent wiggle. Not sure if I got a bad quality control piece or what.
If I had bought the store insurance I could have just swapped it. Wasn’t worth paying shipping and the $10 to replace the rod via Pflueger warranty, especially when they’d probably determine it was my fault anyway.
Gonna try to hash out the handle issue on the reel and put it on a better rod. The rod definitely seems to be the cost cutting element of the combo. Though it’s appearance and action were really nice.
Shame, because this was a lot of fun to use, but not the quality one would expect from a $70 combo. Really great feeling setup when working. Handle with care, I suppose.
Pflueger President Combo 6940 with Pflueger 7′ Medium Action President Rod I purchased this combo from Cabelas about a month ago for $79. 99. I normally fish Shimano baitcasters but I was needing something that was capable of casting lighter lures for crappie but yet strong enough for walleye.
I read up on reviews about Pflueger President reels and it convinced me to give one a try. I am so happy I did. The rod tip is fast and the backbone is solid. My “go to” rod has been my Mojo Bass mated with a Shimano Chronarch, but ever since buying this combo I haven’t picked it back up.
I would have happily paid $300 for this setup. The only issues that I have had is the reel seat tends to work loose frequently but I have found that you can really give it a good tightening without stripping the threads, problem solved.
The other issue is I feel the reel is a bit noisy but i am new to spinning reels so this may be normal. I will be buying a few more of these really soon. Great product at a fraction of the cost!!! Why are you still reading this, go get one and give it a try.
The PENN Pursuit IV spinning combo is great for inshore, boat, and surf fishing. This combo combines the Pursuit IV spinning reel and a graphite composite rod for an affordable and durable fish-taming set-up.
The reel features our proven HT-100 drag system and a 4-sealed stainless steel bearing system, making the Pursuit IV a great value for money for saltwater anglers. Now available in both inshore & nearshore travel combo setups for easy travel and convenient fishing!.
Yesterday, January 21, 2022, I received my order of the Penn Pursuit IV Combo, rod and reel. I have several Penn and Okuma rods, but I have to say this this rod will be my favorite for fishing local lakes, ponds, and creeks.
For about $80, this combo is worth every cent. The reel, a Penn Pursuit IV 3000, is solidly built. The new handle is incredibly strong. The entire reel is the best bang you can get for fresh or inshore fishing.
As for Tackle Direct, this is a shop that focuses on appropriate shipping. The rod arrived in a heavy-duty tube that protects the rod while in transit. I have ordered rods from Amazon, and although the price is comparable, rods that I have purchased from Amazon are shipped in flimsy that invite disaster–broken rods.
As for the reel, it was well-packaged to protect it from damage. You won’t go wrong buying this great combo from Tackle Direct. Nelson Fort Worth, TX.
This rod and reel combo were not quite what unexpected since the description indicated a 2 piece rod (which is why I bought it from Walmart in the first place). Instead, I got a one piece 7’ rod, which is not too easy to transport.
However, it works very well and I enjoyed casting with it. I bought it as a first serious fishing rod for my grandson and is looking forward to bringing in the lunkers. Time will tell how this stands up to salt water,.
Bought this combo for my 8 year old son to replace his small beginning setup. Absolutely perfect for the price. The pursuit 3 reel performs the exact same as my fierce and battle reels, literally no difference except the colors and the lower price.
It’s about $50 for just the reel or for $70 you get the rod with the combo, it’s a no brainer. Get the rod just to have extra even if not needed. The rod is slightly stiffer then other medium fast action rods I have, but we fish a lot of structure like docks and bridges and it works great.
Spooled w 20lb braid. My son has been smashing snappers, sheepsheads, and small snook.

Bought this product and used it multiple times targeting kingfish untill I bought a Shimano Tyrnos. This was when I realised that the rod that comes with this combo is actually of high quality with a line rating to a maximum of 15 kg.
the reel on the otherhand is also extremely smooth and light but its maximum drag is rated to around 15lb. This difference worked out really well for me because I paired the rod with my new Tyrnos 30 wide and bought a 10 kilo boat rod for the reel.
The rod has performed exceptionally when paired with the tyrnos and the reel has also been great for lighter work that the tyrnos is a little big for. My only issue is that the reel had a serious problem with the drag causing the line to come out easily and the pop and go hard and repeat.
After removing the screw that stops the handle screw from turning and tightening that bolt the drag has been great. 100% would reccomend combo especially if you are planning on seperating the rod and reel!.
Bought this and have been using it for a few months now. Still very happy with my purchase. Personally I use it for catfishing rather then saltwater. Using 50lb braid it works great. Only problem I’ve had is being new to baitcaster reels is it took me a while to learn casting.
Cant get slot of distance but hardly any birdnests now. Another thing I really love is penn including a whole diagram of how to disassemble the reel. Just in case I need repairs in the future. Pole is absolutely tough as nails.
Got snagged on a tree in the water one day and my 50lb line actually snapped before the pole even started giving. All in all great product and well worth the price.
I’ve used plenty of baitcasters in the past and they’ve been very easy to cast and use. This one spools so freely that it is difficult to prevent birds nests blowing out on the reel. Even if I continually make adjustments on the tensioning levers.
Built to withstand the toughest freshwater and saltwater battles, the Penn Passion Inshore Rod and Spinning Reel Combo gives anglers the durability, smooth performance, and robust leverage needed to haul in catch after catch.
This convenient rod and reel combo pairs an ultra-durable spinning reel with a balanced, ergonomic inshore rod. Crafted from metal and packed with fish-fighting features, the Passion spinning combo is engineered to reliably catch fish for years.
From the Rigid Resin RR30 Techno-Balanced rotor to the heavy-duty aluminum bail wire, each component is designed to endure grueling conditions. The reel’s proprietary HT-100 carbon fiber drag system offers multiple drag settings and remains cool in the heat of battle, giving you the finesse and power needed to subdue bluefish, tarpon, and other hard-pulling species.
The reel’s power perfectly complements the inshore rod that keeps fatigue at bay during lengthy angling sessions. The rod’s superior polymer Winn grips provide a comfortable, secure handhold even in wet and cold conditions, helping reduce the risk of repetitive motion injury.
Suitable for use with Superline, the spool is fitted with a rubber gasket that prevents the Superline from slipping under pressure, so anglers can use braided line without a monofilament backing. Line capacity rings display at a glance how much line is remaining.
We had already purchased the 2500 size and did a review on that. Well now we have the 5000 model and once again, it’s an excellent combo. I cannot speak for the newer Passion combos but these “last year’s” models are perfect with the ladies around me here.
The reel was great right off the track but after 5 uses, it started jamming up. I figured it might need cleaning because I was using it at the beach. The main gear was already broken. 3 of the pins had broken.
all next to each other. I was really disappointed in the durability of the components of this reel. I was told where I purchased it that the warranty was void because I took it apart.
I am relatively new to fishing. however I have gotten to use several different spinning reels since I have started. My husband bought me the Penn Passion reel to replace one I didn’t like. I really like the retrieve handle.
it is very comfortable. I liked the reel so much, that he bought me the Passion combo. Just yesterday I caught a 25” redfish on it. it handled well. I am very happy with this combo.
The PENN Spinfisher VI spinning combos are a complete fish catching package. Our newly renovated Spinfisher VI reel is combined with a factory matched Spinfisher VI graphite composite rod. With a full assortment of inshore surf and boat combinations there is something for every angler.
In addition to our powerful HT-100 drag system this set-up features an IPX5 rating which uses seals in key locations to keep water out. Available in both standard and Live Liner Models this cutting edge combo allows anglers to be fully equipped for success in any saltwater adventure.
I am now on my second Penn Spinfisher VI combo. I had to return the first one because the reel spool would not go down far enough to allow line to load properly. It was a physical limitation of some sort, and there were no shims to remove to fix the issue as there is on other reels.
I ended up with a strong taper towards the top, which means I could not load the specified amount of line, and this could cause with lots of wind knots and reduced cast distances. I returned it. The one I have now is much better; however, it still has a slight taper towards the top.
I even bought a device to load the line and respooled it. Still, it has a slight taper but so far that has not been causing any problems. Be aware, too, that the combo comes with no box for the reel; therefore, you get no instructions, not warranty information, etc.
Not a big deal, however. On the positive side, the reel works great! It is quite smooth and so far, I’ve had no issues. The rod is also really strong and has had to undergo some pretty strong fights with some fish, underwater hazards ,or even being hung up in a tree, once but it still works as it should.
I worry about the stainless steel eyelets with my braided line, but only time will tell. Overall, I highly recommend this combo but just beware of the reel spool travel distance as you wind it to make sure you can load the line properly onto it.
I have purchased a few of these because they are great. The reels are basically where the value is. Your getting a descent rod for an additional 20-30 dollars. I wish they used alconite guide rings but again the rod isn’t the value it’s the reel.
This combo is fun to fish with. Only good things to say about these combos. Haven’t had any issues what so ever. I definitely recommend these if you want a solid combo without having to buy separately.
The Spin-fisher Six Live Liner reels are the new goto reels. They function like a classic spinning reel and also like a lever drag conventional. While fishing with either live or dead baits, we always need a drop back or time for the fish to take the bait.
The Live Liner feature does this for you. It also works well for kite fishing too (which is normally hard for a spinning reel). The 6500 seems to be the best spooled with 40 lb spiderwire braid.
The Penn warfare combo was engineered to be an extremely versatile all-around combo at an affordable price. Warfare combos feature both a one-piece tubular glass blank with solid tip or tubular glass blank depending on model stainless steel guides with aluminum oxide inserts heavy-duty graphite reel seat and a triangle EVA foregrip for added comfort and control.
This combo arrived just in time for some trolling for Spanish Mackerel. It performed well. I am a level wind fan. I put 20lb mono on it as we occasionally pick up some larger king mackerel and pulled #1 planers or 4 oz trolling sinkers.
Star drag was smooth. No complaints. I picked up the Rival 20 as well and caught a nice king on its first pull.
Arm yourself for the most punishing saltwater battles with the Penn Battle II Spinning Reel Combo. This fishing combo pairs a robust full metal body fishing reel with an ultra-responsive fishing rod, giving you a potent combination of strength and sensitivity.
Crafted from durable materials and packed with fish-fighting features, the spinning reel is engineered to catch fish year after year. From the full metal body, side plate, and rotor to the five sealed stainless steel ball bearings, each component is designed to help you land your catch.
The reel’s HT-100 Versa-Drag carbon fiber drag system leverages both sides of each drag washer to provide maximum drag, and its instant anti-reverse bearing eliminates pullback, so you reel without interruption.
Additionally, the drag washers are treated with a proprietary grease to ensure long-lasting performance. Suitable for use with Berkley or Spiderwire Superline, the spool is fitted with a rubber gasket that prevents the Superline from slipping under pressure, meaning anglers can use braided line without a monofilament backing.
And thanks to its line capacity rings, the spool displays at a glance how much line is remaining. Constructed from graphite composite blanks and equipped with aluminum oxide guides, the fishing rod offers exceptional durability and responsiveness, making it an ideal complement for the Battle II reel.
I’ve been a Quantum & Shimano fisherman forever! NOT ANYMORE! From the moment i picked up this Battle II i knew it was the perfect fit! The rod has Amazing, smooth casting, super comfortable grip, light weight, & extremely well balanced! The Reel is on an entirely different level compared to what I was using! The Reel is so smooth and setup 100% perfectly! Super fast retrieving, smooth as glass, zero absolutely zero back spin, more durable than any closed face reel I’ve ever owned, and it’s very appealing to the eye! Once you have PENN equipment in your hands you will understand why they’re THE BEST! Enjoy!!.
I purchased the Battle II (two of them) 4 ago. They are my first line reels. I have one with mono and the other braided. I have been a freshwater fisherman my whole life until we bought a winter home in Naples Fl and now do both.
Last year durning Covid I went on Penn Site to buy the Battles “Sold out” I use the Spin Fisher in salt water now, for which I have just about all the Spin Fishers (My wife feels I have way to many roads and reels, figures).
I actually only buy Penn reels now (I actually have other models as well), to me they are the best quality and durable, to quantify that statement as all fisherman know is proper maintenance.
I bought my PENN battle 2 last June. For the price it’s great pier fishing gear. unfortunately the very first day towards the end of the day a monster decided to catch me. Yes he took my reel but I had a chip on tie cord attached to it.
The fish was so big it bent the spool shaft. It was really hard to reel. Then the big fish decided he had enough and took off and snapped the hook. 50lb test line held up. I ordered a new spool-shaft and few other parts and the reel works like new.
My battle 2 is going back for another try this June. PENN Reels are the best.
Saltwater anglers choose the PENN Fierce III spinning combos for power and performance in any inshore, boat, orsurffishing situation. The rod features a graphite composite blank, one-piece stainless steel Dura-Guides, and finger grooves in the EVA grips which provide extra traction when fighting fish.
Thereelfeatures a full metal body and sideplate, along with PENN HT-100 carbon fiber drag washers. The innovative Live Liner drag system is adjustable and automatically disengages with a turn of the handle, making it ideal for bait fishing.
I purchased this combo from Academy on 7/24/2022. I went home and spooled the reel with 40 lb power pro. I took it out fishing on 7/26/2022. While on a school of Bonito I hooked into a 12 lb Jack Crevalle.
after fighting this fish for 30 minutes the fish came up to the boat. He still had one more run in him and when he saw the boat he made a b-line back to the depths. As he made his run the rod snapped 4 eyes down form the tip.
I was still able to land the fish but i was pretty disappointed in the lack of quality in this rod. I knew I was purchasing a budget combo, but I believed it could handle such a small fish. I am very disappointed that all I have now is a reel with no rod and I am unsure if I will trust the more expensive products that Penn offers.
I had 2 out of 4 of my main reels give out on me after years of use. I was hours from home on a 5 day fishing excursion. I went to the nearest outfitter and bought a 7” medium heavy/6000 fierce live liner combo.
Caught a 32 pounder on it right off the bat and it handled like a dream. The rod could stand a heavier tip but the reel takes things to a new level. Overall I think this was the best $130 bucks I’ve ever spent on fishing gear and this has become new favorite outfit.
I own over a hundred rods and reels that I use and this stands out above them all as a new favorite. You won’t be disappointed!!.
I bought the 7’6” rod and reel combo about 10 months ago as it seemed to be economical and it seemed to work great. That was until “it” happened. I was fishing from a pier and hooked up with a big bull red (I’d guess ~30-40 lbs) – got him all the way in and when he finally wore himself out, I went to lift him to the surface and the rod snapped clean in half.
Keep in mind I wasn’t pulling him in ridiculously hard or being super aggressive with it. Just letting him run when he wanted to run. I think the tension and pressure from the entire fight was too much for this rod as it had to have been stressed for it to snap like that.
The reel has been good to me so far although it feels somewhat cheaply made, but so far no issues with it.
Experience better-than-ever Abu Garcia engineering for MAXimum performance with the Abu Garcia Max Pro baitcast combo. This combo features a custom designed reel seat with integrated polymer comfort grip for ultimate comfort, 7+1 bearing system for ultimate smoothness, and 24-Ton graphite construction for ultimate sensitivity.
Had to order this 2 weeks ago with a cabelas gift card because they are still living in the dinosaur age and wont accept visa debit. Over 2 weeks later and my rod is still in their warehouse not being shipped.
Only offer they have offered is a refund back to my useless giftcard. Im beyond ticked off as they have screwed me over for the fishing derby!.
Bought this rod when it went on sale, and I’ve used this thing for just about everything. 14 pound pike? No problem. Big ol salmon? Also no problem. Great sensitivity and power on the rod, only issue is the ceramic fell out of the last line guide so I had to replace that.
If you’re looking for a baitcaster with great value, look no further.
Bought this as my first casting combo. The rod is phenomenal, I’ve caught a 25-pound pike and over 100 fish now. Carp, Walleyes, Pike etc. It holds up extremely well. The reel started getting squeaky and unfortunately needed replacement after a year or so.
The Ozark Trail OTX spinning combo provides a high quality product that you can trust at an everyday value. This adult spinning combo features comfortable custom topo cork handles and a 1 piece IM7 graphite rod blank.
Each combo is equipped with a 7+1, size 3000 spinning reel. The 70 length and medium action provides opportunities to use this combo for a wide range of fishing techniques in both freshwater and saltwater.
Built with quality components such as stainless steel guides, rubber cork reel knob, double anodized aluminum spool and lightweight graphite reel seat.
I’ve been fishing most of my life and have a large selection of fishing pole and reels. I found this combo set to be a nice addition to my light fishing tackle collection. The 1 piece graphite pole is made from a solid blank and has some nice stiffness to it.
The guides seem to be of good quality and are attached well. I would not fear using this pole for some larger game fish such as Summer Steelhead. The reels action is smooth, the bail catches and releases easily.
I like the cork grips on the pole and reel. Be aware that the pole does not break down. All in all this setup is above average and should work out well for me.

I’m never one to buy cheap rods, have fished many Lamiglas, Daiwa, and Shimano Inshore series spinning rods, I wanted a new stick for early season striped bass fishing with a “split grip” and Im happy I did!… I purchased the 7’ H Action Rod about a month and a half ago.
Cast well, 4 sessions throwing 9” Soft Jerk Baits for Striped Bass. Plenty of power to whoop up on “keeper size” Linesiders to 37”. I found I did want a bit more whip so I ended up exchanging the H for a MH action.
Have fished 3 sessions with this setup, casts a lot better than H action, nice soft tip and still has plenty pump to land bass to 42”. For the money…you can’t beat it!.
I’ve used MH and H action bait casting rods in 7 ft length for muskies. I originally purchased for my grandchildren so they could throw smaller (1 oz) lures. I decided to test them out paired with smaller, lightweight reels and 40-50 lb test braid.
I caught and released 43 1/2 and 44 1/2 inch muskies and several smaller fish. These rods have sufficient power to stop and turn a musky heading for cover. I used these rods for most of my musky fishing this season.
Matched 7’6 rod with Accurist reel for inshore fluke, blackfish, sea bass etc. Pulled up many species including small sting ray 12-15lb, baby sharks easily with this rod. I was quite surprised with its backbone for such a light rod.
Sensitivity to set hooks cleanly on Fluke and blackfish and power to keep blackfish diving back into rock structure. The length of the bottom grip excellent for hookset leverage using your forearm and other hand on reel handle to speedily get to line pickup immediately.
No regrets taking a chance on a budget priced rod.
It depends on a variety of factors, including what type of fish you are targeting, what type of water you will be fishing in, and your personal preferences. In general, however, a good budget rod and reel combo for fishing can be had for around $100.
This will give you a decent quality rod and reel that will be suitable for most fishing situations. Of course, if you are looking for the very best quality, you will have to spend more money. But for most people, a budget rod and reel combo is a good option.
