20 Best Bread Knife America’S Test Kitchen (2022 Updated)

I bought a beautiful ikon creme knife set but the block the gave me is hideous. I don’t mind natural variety in wood but parts of it look like it came from different types of trees. I asked to exchange it for another color and provided photos of what was advertised versus what i received and they refused to do an exchange, and also said they couldn’t see a difference between the ad photos and what i received.

I wish i could add photos but am unable to here for some reason. I paid $800 bucks and they wouldn’t exchange it even though it was still wrapped and they had the other block color available on the website.

I think they have a lifetime guarantee on the knives but they dgaf if you are happy with the whole product. Will send this particular purchase right back where it came from.

The chefs knife on its own is a good knife for small hands, it’s well balanced and stays sharp. But it’s no replacement for the fully forged version. It doesn’t have the weight or control. Regarding the paring knife, it’s a lightweight knife and too small for my hands (I’m 6’5, big hands).

It feels like a small steak knife. Does stay sharp though. The sharpener drags the score down. Its taken chunks out of some of my knives with the honing side. The sharpening side works ok, but if you are buying for the sharpener I’d avoid.

Good value overall on deal for approx $130 at Myer. I’d not buy at full price.

I should probably wait till I’ve used it for a month or so, but this knife is just too good a deal not to rave about it. I’ve had it now for all of 20 minutes. I tested it on bread; I tested it on leftover chuck roast.

I even tested it on my finger (I just touched the blade to get a sense of how sharp it was and with almost no pressure I’m now wearing a bandaid). I know it says “Bread Knife” but this thing sliced through that cold roast beef like it was butter.

The slices looked almost like I went through them in a single slice: smooth with only very, very light striations. And bread? Like it was born to cut bread (which it was). Of course for anyone who has to slice meats, breads and other (boneless) things, its also about the handle.

I have medium large hands. The handle was perfect. I can imagine doing a lot of cutting with this without fatigue or driving my nails into my palm. Given its shape I think it will be comfortable for all but the very smallest hands.

It also did not slide around. I ran it under water and then took a slice of my roast beef. No slippage. Yes, I could feel the water but the knife did not slide or slip in my hand against the resistance of the chuck roast.

Now the really amazing part: This thing is dirt cheap. I paid less than $15. 00 for mine, including shipping. List price is around $22. 00. I’m sure there are better knives out there but nothing comes close within a couple hundred dollars (I’ve checked).

This is not just for the budget conscious, this is one great knife.

Indescribably sharp and beautifully balanced. This is an astonishingly good knife, especially for the money. I’ve never used a knife that holds its edge as well as this one does. One really doesn’t have to apply pressure when slicing meet, for example.

The weight of the knife allows it to effortless glide right through the meat under its own weight. Yes, it is stamped, but the balance is very, very good. The handle material is very comfortable to hold; soft and very “grippy” even when wet.

One minor gripe is with the ergonomics of the handle where it meets the blade: it is physically wider than the rest of the handle. I believe that this is to give the user a “fitted” area in which to place the thumb and index finger, but this makes it difficult to “pinch” the blade for control (as most professionals do).

This knife gives me the ability to cut veggies when I need to be closer to the board and have more control over the knife. Thomas Keller uses this knife in his Masterclass and that was another reason for buying it.

The knife comes super sharp too.

I am French method trained and a minimalist when it comes to culinary tools. I not know how I have lived this long without this Santoku knife. It is the greatest tool in my kitchen. Thank you Cangshan and Thomas Keller!.

Love this knife so far. Can slice tomatos very thin without squashing the poor thing.

I needed a paring knife for my daughter, who has small hands. I poured over the knives available on Amazon , comparing the length of the blade as well as the total length of the knife. This is the ONLY paring knife that came close to the knife in size as the one she uses now (mine!).

It has a plastic handle and carbon steel blade. I wash it by hand because I want it to last as long as the one we already have from 30 years ago. I have larger hands, but it works for me, also. I do not like huge blades on a paring knife.

The handle must be larger than the blade to function well. The handle of this is comfortable, the blade is sharp, and makes paring fruits and vegetables easy!.

I bought it to take the tops off of strawberries and remove the cores and stems off of apples. I looked for a 2. 5 inch in Wustoff or Henchels or Shun and others from my go to knife makers. Couldn’t find a single knife this small, always a birds beak’s knife which are not what I want.

The standard 3. 5 inch paring knife is too big. This is the perfect size. And its very sharp. The stainless resin handle is pretty cool. Feels solid without the weight.

My daughter wanted a long bread knife for slicing her homemade sourdough loaves along with other breads and watermelon in season. She just gave me a demonstration of how well it sliced through a somewhat soft and squishy loaf of sourdough.

The combination of hard crust and softer interior was a challenge that the knife handled beautifully.

Although technically a pastry knife I bought this as a bread knife having seen it on a bread making channel I watch. Absolutely delighted with it. It cuts through delicate croissants like butter and slices through crusty sourdoughs with ease.

There’s a reason Wusthof is as well known as it is. Even folks who don’t cook likely think of a wusthof style german blade when they think of what a chef’s knife is. The tang is well weighted. The blade itself is heavy as well, allowing your wrist to do less work as you can rely on the heft of the steel itself to follow-through each cut.

That being said, wusthof, henkels, and mundial all use the same style of blank and are pretty undifferentiated aside from their steel quality. Wusthof will hold an edge longer, but if you’re comfortable sharpening your own knives, there’s no reason to buy one over a mundial.

Finally added this bread knife to my Wusthof collection and I love it! It cuts through crusty breads without damaging the loaf! The weight and balance are perfect! I bought my first Wusthof knife, the 8” Chef’s Classic in a shop soon after we were stationed in Frankfurt.

The shop keeper advised to “treat it like a fine piece of china” and it would last a lifetime! Now, 49 years later, that Chef’s knife is still my favorite but I now wish I had purchased this bread knife decades ago!.

very disappointing. The price was unbeatable. Shipping/delivery as promised. It was purchased as a gift – these are expensive knives. The knife set was packaged with the knives in individual slots, but other than the 8″ cooks knife, the other two knives were not properly seated in their assigned slots, which is why I opened the package.

Although the cooks knife appeared to be ok, I removed it from the package to look it over and saw that the tip of the knife was broken off. The knife had to be taken out of the package in order to see the tip of the blade.

This damage did not happen from shipping. I expected more from Walmart.

The Victorinox bread knife does not impress with high-grade expensive cutlery. If that is what you want, be my guest and plunk down your money for it. I gave away my very expensive Henckels bread knife after I purchased this Victorinox.

Some of my other knives are in the Shun line. The Victorinox is light weight and the blade will flex. What it does so well is cut bread as well as any other knife made. After watching America’s Test Kitchen test and use the knife for years as the best value in bread knives I decided to try it and I was not disapointed.

This knife equaled or exceeded every other bread knife I have tried and I bake a lot of breads and have used several of the best-made knives to cut them. The blade stays sharp even though you are constantly cutting into your cutting board.

The blade is stainless steel and a quick wash cleans it up fast. The handle will fit large and samll hands and the overall weight is light and easy to control. The blade width is is wide and the length is 10 inches.

For the money, you can not beat the victornox.

This knife is exactly as described and for a good price. I personally don’t like it though. The stamped (as opposed to forged) blade is extremely flexible which makes it hard to get a straight cut. The steel is hard, the knife is sharp and the fibrox handle is practical.

If you like this style you will have no complaints but personally I wish I had bought something else.

This knife is awesome. I read an article, where they rated breadknives and this one was the winner. It’s expensive but so worth it. I have the Victorinox cheaper bread knife too, which has been ok, but this one has taken slicing to the next level.

Only good things to say about shun knives. This bread knife is a lot larger in person and so beautiful. It cuts heavenly. It is very sharp so because of that there are less crumbs when cutting bread.

The knife is stunning. It’s a beautiful piece to use around guests. I love it. I own many pieces from this line. They are so nice to have. They work great. I don’t put them in the dishwasher bc it will ruin the knife and the dishwasher dulls the blade on knives.

Only hand wash these.

This is by far the best bread knife I ever purchased. Husband makes a mean sourdough and this knife cuts threw it like butter. No ripping and tearing of crust or bread, it slides right threw. Softer breads it handles just as nice.

I got this as a gift a month ago and I have been using this for a month, almost daily, exclusively for slicing bread (sourdough bread mostly). True to the description, this knife cuts cleanly through the bread, very comfortable grip and heavy enough for steady slicing.

It is super sharp and my friend did cut himself (the cut was so smooth he didn’t realize it for sometime until he stained my sofa !). I hope the knife stays as sharp. I love my Shun knife. hope to use it for a long time.

It cuts through a thick sourdough crust beautifully, the blade isn’t too thick but still feels sturdy. We read a lot about the different types of bread knives, and Victorinox is a good balance between quality, performance and cost.

We paid more for the rosewood handle purely because we liked the look of it – thus the four stars for value for money. We have other knives of theirs with the rough plastic handle and they’re amazing too.

This is a great product. I use it o slice bread and it is so easy. I have arthritus and this knife is so handy i,m thinking about using it to slice cold meats as well.

Absolutely LOVE this knife. I order fresh pan loaves from a private baker and this knife allows me to cut the size of the loaf however I want to!!

We’ve owned a set of Wusthoff knives for about 8-10 years. Lost the original paring knife in the rubbish probs while chopping veggies. These were on sale & we were looking for a replacement and some steak knives.

A little disappointed – as these knives blades are much thinner than our original set of knives. They also don’t seem to wash well, at ALL!. Have been washing all the Wusthoffs by hand to keep them in good condition, for years.

These however are not made of good quality stainless steel & are much lighter than the equivalent knives we already own. The steak knives & other utility knife we got are similarly thin, stain easier, don’t clean properly & feel substandard.

Such a pity.

This knife is the best knife I’ve ever owned! It’s well balanced, German made from forged steel. It’s easy to keep sharp, and it is very sharp, with a few runs with a honing rod. Haven’t needed to sharpen it yet.

It does come with complimentary sharpening service (just need to pay for postage) and a lifetime warranty. It has a full yang and white handle that doesn’t feel cheap and has a good grip. The white I think is a nice touch and certainly a nit diffetent but still nice.

I was a bit worried about possible staining from veggies etc but having used it I don’t think that’s an issue. The price was the cheapest I could find by far and delivery was prompt and well communicated.

When I used this knife at my daughter’s, it was not like any knife I had at home, and I have plenty. It is a small, well-balanced knife that fits comfortably in my small hand. The tip of it is angled down and makes it easy to carve into anything.

This knife is strong yet very thin and so, so sharp. Slicing is so effortless, especially as it glides through too-soft tomatoes. It makes the average paring knife seem bulky. I ordered a few more to give to the cooks in my family for Christmas.

I first ordered one from a Cooking specialty shop and waited and waited. Finally, customer service said it had been cancelled because it wasn’t available. No heads up from them. I found the knife at Crate and Barrel and had it in less than a week.

This is an excellent, everyday, everything knife. I use it for cutting veggies, slicing smaller loaves of bread and even trimming chicken or steak before cooking. This is the second one I’ve purchased; the first is about 20 years old.

The serrated edge is more difficult to sharpen, so I finally decided to replace the first, but I use it daily; it is my go-to.

THIS IS A GREAT BREAD KNIFE!!! Finally broke down and bought myself this bread knife (got one with Palisander handle that I LOVE-these now hard to find) after giving to many for wedding gifts. Have many bread knives of different styles.

This beats them all and just need to be careful as it is so big and sharp with great serrations, and has great balance and comfort and cuts through almost anything. It is wide and like it so much I just had to buy a new block (Zwilling Pro) that it would fit in.

Also able to buy when on sale so SERIOUS value and quality.

I am a big fan of this line. The forged German stainless steel is so sharp. It stays sharp for a very long time and is easy to maintain. All signs of high quality cutlery. The ergonomic handle is very comfortable to hold at any angle.

The handle material texture gives me a strong confident grip when cutting. The slim blade profile gives me great cutting results with little waste. The comfortable handle makes it intuitive to hold the knife properly so my accuracy is greatly improved as well.

It is also very comfortable to hold for longer jobs making it easy to work for an extended time with little fatigue.

this is the best bread knife I’ve ever had, does the job really well. In my house, some of us are left handed and some right, but we all can use the knife and cut straight slices of bread. The only question I have is to do with how to sharpen it.

I have a global knife sharpener (2 sets of wheels that sit in water) but I don’t think this will be suitable, due to the serrations on the blade. Any info about sharpening this knife would be appreciated.

I bought this as a gift. Stylish looking knife. Helps to complete the set of knives which the person already owns. Will be attached to a wall mounted magnet knife rack so permanently on display by the cooker.

Some of the reviews said that they rust. I got 2 of these and have been putting them in the dishwasher and they have not rusted at all unlike my cusinart bread knife which rusted in places after washing in the dishwasher (very annoying).

The one thing good about the cusinart bread knife was that the blade is shaped in such a way that it prevents that hand from getting cut. Not with this knife. This knife is very sharp and you have to be careful.

Downside of a cheaply made knife.

I love it because it cuts through everything and it does so, so nicely. I know this is a bread knife, but I’ve used it to cut everything. I don’t need multiple knives. Besides serving ones, obviously.

It is quite big and heavy, though. Maybe a set of two would be nice in the future. One of this size and a smaller, lighter one.

I bought this as a gift for a friend that loves to bake bread. I was at her house for dinner a couple of times and noticed that she was using some pretty crappy knives to slice her delicious bread so.
