A bike rack for a truck hitch is a device that is attached to the hitch of a truck that is used to hold bicycles in place. There are many different types and styles of bike racks for truck hitches, but they all serve the same purpose: to keep your bikes secure and steady while you are driving.
Many bike racks for truck hitches also come with features that make it easier to load and unload your bikes, such as ramps or swing-away arms.

This sturdy, easy-loading rack attaches to your vehicle’s two-inch receiver hitch, ensuring a secure interface for hauling two bikes. As a cool bonus for family vacations and road trips with friends, Yakima offers a HoldUp +2 attachment (sold separately) that expands its carrying capacity to four bikes in total.
StrongArms firmly attach to your bikes’ wheels, securing those with wheel sizes ranging from 20 to 29-inches in diameter. This design safely accommodates a wide variety of bikes, ranging from carbon-frame road bikes to full-suspension mountain bikes equipped with 2.
5-inch tires. Side-to-side adjustments space out bikes for an ideal fit without rubbing. Plus, it tilts down when loaded with bikes, allowing you to access your vehicle’s trunk or rear hatch. And to deter theft, the HoldUp 2in features Yakima’s SKS locks for securing both the rack itself and attached bikes.
Forget painstakingly taking your bikes off at every pit-stop just to grab the snack cooler or backpack in the trunk with the Yakima FullSwing. Solving the problem of loading and unloading gear when your bike rack is attached, the FullSwing effortlessly moves out of the way with up to four bikes attached.
Suddenly, road trips and family vacations just became a whole lot easier, especially with the constant demands of loading and unloading gear. Simply loosen the rack’s safety knob, pull the red pin, and rotate the rack away from your vehicle’s rear hatch.
You’re now able to access your vehicle’s gear and luggage, all without the hassle of removing each bike. The FullSwing accommodates up to four bikes, holding up to 150-pounds in weight. Yakima’s ZipStrips securely attach to all types of bikes, ranging from city cruisers to mountain bikes.
The rack’s arms fold down when it’s not in use for easier maneuverability and parking. Tool-free installation attaches to your two-inch receiver hitch without breaking a sweat. Plus, its locking SpeedKnob prevents thieves from stealing this rack from your vehicle while an integrated cable locks bikes to the rack itself for theft deterrent.
The swing out function should have used some kind of quick release pin, but instead they use a giant bolt. When the bikes are loaded, it’s near impossible to screw the bolt back in to lock the arm back in place.
What’s the point of having the big, heavy, 70lb swing arm rack that you can’t utilize? Also, you can only get 3 bikes on it. I returned this and got a premier Allen 5 bike rack for 1/6 the price and love it much better.
Carries 2 bikes (up to 80 lbs total capacity) Weight (assembled): 29 lbs Accommodates 2″” and 1. 25″” receiver options. 1. 25″” has a slightly curved stinger. Accommodates up to a 44. 5″” wheelbase Fits 20″” – 29″” wheels and up to a 2.
75″” tire Sherpa is not recommended for Downhill or Freeride bikes A mountain master, the Sherpa will get your bikes and gear to any destination in style. This rack accommodates almost any sized bike by the wheels so you don’t have to worry about scratching your paint job.
It’s light enough to take on and off the car with ease, but looks good enough that you’ll want to leave it on all year. Tilts down for easy vehicle access and folds up quickly for storage. External cable lock and hitch pin included.
Front and rear tire ratchets make loading and unloading a breeze. Hand-tight cam system – no need for additional tools.
I did not get what I thought I was ordering. I get the Labor Day sale text message and place the order for the Sherpa 2. 0 rack at a great price. The only color color choice on the Mikes Bikes website was grey.
In the picture there were two racks, one with a grey stripe and one with orange stripe. I want the one with grey stripe, so I place the order on a price that was only good for 24 hours. All is good. A few days later, the UPS delivery shows up and on the box it says “grey + orange anodize.
That’s not what I expected I ordered, so I put the box in my car and drive straight to my local Pleasanton Mikes Bikes with my rack in hand. I ask them to simply swap it out for the grey instead of orange.
The guys at Pleasanton were very helpful and did what they could but they didn’t have any others in stock, so they get on the phone with some manager at another location. After about a half hour I was told that the sale price was only for “in stock items” and I can return it for a full refund and order the one I want at full price.
Sale price was $499 and full price is $629 That simply doesn’t sit well with me because someone didn’t describe the product accurately according to Kuat. The correct color choice description should have been: grey metallic with orange anodize, black metallic with grey anodize or pearl metallic with silver anodize.
That’s just poor attention to detail and incredibly misleading to the customer. I told the staff that I would even wait a month or more until they get another delivery for one in the right color. They said that I could not do that with the sale price I got.
What? I could be wrong, but the rack I had in my possession most likely cost Mikes Bikes the exact same price as one they would get on another order. Instead of Mike’s Bikes treating the customer the right way and giving me a chance to get what I thought I was getting they leave a sour taste in my mouth.
Let’s not forget that the website had two racks in the image and the only color choice was grey. I’m sure that I’m not the only customer that assumed they were getting the grey anodize. Nowhere in the description did it mention orange.
I have always had positive experiences with Mikes Bikes over the past 10 years but I will think twice about spending a penny with them moving forward.
There are things I like about this rack, but I think it’s quite overpriced for what it is. I found it easy to attach to the hitch and I like the overall design – the arms feel secure, I like being able to fold the rack easily, and it does hold my bike well.
I was also able to use the farthest rack position as a makeshift bike stand while I did some work on the chain, which was handy since I don’t have my own stand. However, for this price point, I expect more than to have to use my own cheap Velcro strap to secure a mountain bike with average/slightly wide tires.
I’m not using some kind of niche fat or cargo bike here – why doesn’t the Kuat come with an integrated, high-quality strap for this purpose or better yet, a design that doesn’t require that extra step at all? I also find the ratchet strap for securing the rear tire to be poorly placed.
You can’t get the bike on the rack without crunching the strap down and having to yank it out from under the tire manually, which is definitely increasing wear and tear already. Finally, the lock that comes with the rack for securing the rack to the hitch felt very cheap and online reviews suggest it can be broken very easily (a problem when you live in a high-theft area, which is not Kuat’s fault), but it did lead to an extra cost to buy a more secure lock.
Long story short, I’m glad I have the rack and it gets the job done, but it’s premium pricing for an average/good product. I can’t give a 4 or 5 star review when the value is skewed like that. Highly recommend waiting until this goes on major sale.
To get you and your riding mate to the post-ride noms faster, Kuat’s Transfer 2 Bike Rack nearly effortless drop and set loading feature is clutch when you are energy depleted from your epic ride. Roll up to the back of the car and kick down the spring-loaded foot pedal and lock the tray down for loading.
The tire trays fit 20-29in tires, so there’s no hassling with initial positioning. A front claw-like lever arm holds the top of the wheel in place with PerfectFit adjustments, and a simple ratcheting strap secures the rear wheel in place.
For heavier bikes, the U-Body design helps you step in closer to the rear tray without straining, unlike models that have a further outboard tray. And the Transfer 2 is Fat bike ready for the snow and beach adventure trips.
If you want to add extra security to protect your bikes from opportunists, a locking hitch pin and integrated cable locks are purchasable separately.
This is my first hitch platform bike rack and I researched many options before ending up picking this one. What I was looking for: – easy load/unload as I am planning on riding every day with my kid after school – small enough to not block rear view window and camera when folded as I am leaving this on for most of the season – no frame contact and no hanging as most bike frames will need extra bars for this – fold down with bikes loaded to have access to trunk – fold away to access trunk when rack is in stored upright position – fit on a Tesla Model Y 2″ factory hitch which has a 250lbs limit, tight bumper clearance and limited room for a hitch pin due to the hitch connector (wiring) – option to add more bikes in future when 2nd kid’s bike gets too big for trunk – not too heavy so it is easy to move between cars and In the past I have used Thule as the go to brand for roof racks, ski carriers etc.
, but to find something that worked for me I looked at most brands including Yakima, Hollywood, Kuat, 1UP and Sarris. While 1UP racks and Kuat’s NV 2. 0 were offering a few more features, they were nearly twice the price and both would have blocked my backup camera in the closed upright position.
What I like: – U shape design doesn’t block the backup camera in upright position – most parking sensors are not ‘complaining’ when backing up with rack in upright position – when bikes are loaded I still have good visibility through the rear view window, only seeing the handle bar and seat of the tallest bike – very simple to load/unload a bike with the strap and the handle, bike sits firm on rack – U shape design lets you walk straight up to each bike when (un)loading the bikes – Fits the Model Y hitch well, leaving enough clearance in upright (closed) position and with bikes loaded – It is not super light, but easy to handle by one person and still can hold heavier bikes Some concerns that might matter to you: – you can only buy a 1 bike add-on for this rack vs the more expensive platform racks from 1UP, Thule or the Kuat NV that allow you to expand with 2 more bikes – it requires assembly.
It isn’t difficult and all tools are included, but the instructions are brief and you are pretty much building the whole rack. Best to read a couple of steps ahead and look at the pictures to verify the correct position of some pieces before putting it together.
– The rack isn’t ‘secured’ to your hitch. Kuat’s ‘secure tool’ to tighten the rack to your hitch is an Allen Key with a hole that fits over the little pin inside the hex bolt. My new set of Allen Keys already came with that hole, so not sure how ‘secure’ this really is.
You will have to buy a hitch pin with a lock to prevent this. – This rack has 3 positions: upright (closed), open (with bikes loaded), lowered (when you need access to trunk with bikes already loaded).
It does NOT have a position that would move the upright rack a little bit out of the way to open the trunk. So keeping this rack on the back of your car at all times means that you will have to lower the rack completely to load groceries.
– There is a lot of plastic on this rack. All parts are made of plastic except for the main U bar that attaches to your hitch and the two bars that hold the handles that grab the tires. I had expected the hinges to be metal, but it is plastic rubbing on plastic.
The handles that grab the tire are plastic and ratchet on the metal bar to get tight. All in all It is sturdy and I am not worried about my bikes, but I am not sure how long it will last considering the wear on the plastic moving parts.
For the price it is a great starter platform bike rack with bike add-on option that fits my car and bikes well and I can live with the above concerns.
Just got this rack to give as a gift, but I put it together and have mounted and tested it, and the Transfer V2 reflects all the qualities that I’ve experienced with Küat products. I already have two Küat racks (NV 2.
0 and old-style Sherpa), plus a roof basket (Vagabond X), and even some other Küat stuff like the bottle-cage locks ( a great and handy product, and all of mine still work beautifully). Everything I’ve ever gotten from them has proven to be the most innovative products on the market, well-designed, and built with the highest degree of quality and durability.
I don’t even bother to look elsewhere for racks – They’re simply the best by every measure. Even on those rare occasions when I’ve had to seek support for a product, their help has been exactly on target, and the people whom I’ve talked to have always been super friendly and have gotten whatever I needed to me right away – So in addition to everything else I’ve mentioned, even their customer service in my experience is unexcelled.
The rack I use depends on the bikes I’m carrying. So I use my Küats to carry everything from road bikes to a Stumpjumper 650B fatty to a 29er hardtail to Specialized Jett 20″ kids bikes, handsome others in between.
My racks are the quickest and simplest to mount and use, the sturdiest, and the most secure under all conditions, from highway to rugged 4WD off-road, for any bikes I want to carry. Period.
Bought this a few weeks back for a camping trip and have been using it heavily over the last week. Here is the good, once assembled this thing is great. Easy to use, very sturdy, and loading and unloading bikes is a breeze.
Actually I really love it now. But there was a lot of pain to get to that love. Assembly on this was horrible. Let me preface this by saying half of my furniture is IKEA, and I am a pretty handy DIY guy.
So I can say when a price is really just poor design. This company really needs a better design for assembly and QC. The holes did not even align. My wife and I spent 40 min on just the first step because the holes in the pieces were not aligned properly.
Finally I got fed up and used my drill to drill through the metal and plastic and enlarge them. Only then was I able to complete assembly. Very frustrating. If the company fixed the assembly process, 5 stars.

Well I haven’t had it out on the road yet, but it looks like a sturdy design that is well thought out. it had all the features I wanted at a reasonable price. Now the bad news, the instillation instructions were awful.
They are all pictures and sometimes you can’t really tell what they are saying. For example my bikes are road bikes with very thin tires that didn’t fit in the default instalation. So I played with it for some time and finlly found a way to make everything fit properly, but I have no idea if it is actully set up correctly.
Hmmmmm. maybe an instalation video would help. Second, I have a 2 inch hitch on my vehicle and the wholes for the receiver pin are a bit large for the provided hardware. I am going to have to rig something a bit better.
So all my complaints are on setup, however once you work though that, I think the unit is great.

This rack is pretty solid. Its important to make sure the main handle is locked in all the way when securing bikes for travel. Both ebikes flipped down while I was driving up a steep hill. Luckily they both were leaning over intil I could pull over & manually push both bikes to a level position & lock the main latching handle into the horizontal metal slot.

Yakima is renowned for building some of the toughest racks on the market with a plenty of creature comforts to make carrying your gear as convenient as possible. Holding up to this function-driven design ethos, the Yakima HoldUp Evo Hitch Rack uses burly steel trays with folding wheel hoops that withstand thousands of miles on the road, regardless if you’re road tripping to Moab for the weekend or cruising along California’s Highway One.
Best of all, it’s designed to fit nearly any bike wheel or tire size on the marketplace, accommodating those bikes with 20 to 29 inch wheels and tires up to 5 inches wide (fat bikes included ). Yakima’s StrongArm hook secures firmly in place over your wheel and tire, so you won’t have to worry about precious carbon frames coming into contact with the rack itself.
Ratcheting straps loop around your rear wheels to keep the bike strapped down securely on the highway. The rack tilts out of the way with its KickStart foot pedal, so you can access the rear hatch of your vehicle when both bikes are loaded and ready to go.
Also, it folds up against the rear of your vehicle when you’re just driving around town without your bikes in tow. It’s incredibly easy to install with Yakima’s SpeedKnob system, which doesn’t require tools and locks firmly into place for peace of mind.
Yakima includes an SKS locking system with a cable that loops around your frames to deter theft at stops along the way to your riding destination. Moreover, you’ll find it’s available for vehicles with either 1.
We bought this last month to extend our Hold-Up Evo 2 to a 4 bike rack. It was easy to put together and is sturdy. It’s exactly what you expect from Yakima. There is one downfall to this bike rack, the part of the rack that is curved for your rear tire to sit in is held secured to the rack with a plastic plug.
This plug is not secure and one broke after the first use. We recommend getting a metal bolt and nut and securing the attachment that way over the plug. Why Yakima would send a piece of plastic to do a piece of metal’s job, I just don’t know! Other than that, it’s a great rack and will last a long time.
Ordered this hitch rack along with +2 rack on 5/15/20. This rack was available for store pickup, +2 was back-ordered until 6/3. Picked up this rack and upon assembly/installation noticed that a piece was broken.
Contacted Yakima direct as we couldn’t get anyone at our local store (due to Covid unfortunately). After back and forth with Yakima, they agreed to send out the replacement part (which ended up taking several weeks to receive after a few reminders).
The replacement part received was not correct. Went back to the store where REI requested we purchase a new one, then wait for a credit for broken rack. After lots more “back & forth”, they finally ordered the rack on 7/5 for a 7/10 arrival.
On 7/9 I was sent an email stating this product is no longer available. Instead of issuing a credit on my card used to make the original purchase, they issued a store credit. In the meantime, the +2 rack was delivered, which is now worthless as I don’t have the original rack to attach to.
It now means another trip to the store to return +2 rack and to try to get the store credit changed to a return on my credit card. We have wasted assembly time, several trips to the store, lots of phone calls – well over two months time on a product that our family has been unable to use along with the $800+ we’re currently out.
Overall a huge disappointment from Yakima and REI customer service.
Easily transport two bikes with Swagman’s XC 2. This platform-style hitch rack is incredibly easy to load. Simply lift the bike into the wheel holders, secure the ratcheting hook over the top tube, and strap the wheels down.
The XC rack is made of steel for excellent stability and durability, features adjustable wheel holders to accommodate different bike types, and folds up when not in use.
This is a solidly constructed hitch mounted bike rack. It holds up to 2 bikes and folds for storage. Initial assembly was intuitive (didn’t require following instructions) and only took about 5 minutes from unboxing to connecting it to my hitch.
It has ratcheting clamps to keep the bikes in place. This works, but I added straps (the idea of watching either or both of my bikes bouncing down the road behind me after I have hit a bump is terrifying).
There is a little bit of a squeak/rattle noise introduced when the rack is connected to the hitch, but this could easily be addressed with a hitch clamp. Note: This rack does not pivot outwards to allow access to a tailgate or rear hatch (it has to be removed for access).
When not in use, the 2 “wings” of the rack (the parts that cradle the bike tires) fold upward, however, the rack does not pivot, slide, or otherwise change position to reduce how far it sticks out behind the vehicle (this can be inconvenient if you have space issues where you park).
Bottom line: I would recommend this rack to anyone that is looking for a solid, no frills method for transporting 1 or 2 bikes.
I am pleased with this bike rack. I had a 1. 25 inch hitch receiver mounted on my 2011 Honda Fit and this bike rack worked great with that set-up. we took a long trip from Phoenix to the Redwood Coast of California and we took along one bike on this bike rack.
The bike was secure on the rack. As the trip went on we became quite confident that the rack was securely holding the bike. We used some velcro straps to make the bike extra secure on the rack when we were on I-5 going 75mph.
it was pretty easy to take the bike off and put back on. I am a 63 year old lady. the center post on the rack can be lowered so once the bike is off the rack i can lower the post and open the hatchback no problem.
I put orange tape on the outer ends of the rack so we wouldn’t hit our shin on it. I got the hitch from eTrailer and had it installed on the Honda Fit at B and M Bumpers in Glendale, Arizona (definitely recommend B.
I have the big name brand but my bike hangs and if I’m hauling 2 bikes they may tap each other in transit. I love this rack because the tires seat snugly in the tire holders. You push the bar down to secure and stabilize the bike and your done.
I had issues with the instructions and emailed the Swagman folks and they were extremely patient, understanding and helpful. All my issues were resolved. I even bought the locking cable and hitch lock, for added security when traveling.
I had a sway in the rack and heard others complain of this. But I found a screw that needed tightened at the hitch. They informed me to check all screws periodically. Good advice. It’s still easy for me to access the hatch of my SUV once I remove the bike and lower the bar, without removing the entire rack.
Plug Thule’s trailer hitch mounted T1 Single Bike Hitch Rack into your receiver and enjoy the convenience of carrying your bike on the rear of the car. Never struggle to put a heavy bike on a high roofline and avoid the horrible bike to driveway/parking garage collision embarrassment.
The rack secures your bike quickly, without frame contact, with a ratcheting arm eliminating the chance of damaging a carbon top tube with excessive pressure or scratches from bungees or straps. When not in use, the carrier easily folds up.
The rack comes sized for 2 and 1-1/4-inch trailer hitches, and you can secure the rack to the hitch receiver with the STL2 lock. Your bike is safe and secure to the rack with the integrated cable lock, so you can grab a post-ride burrito with the crew.
The Transport T1 uses wheel-only locking so it easily handles mountain, downhill, fat bikes and ebikes with wheels ranging from 20 to 29-inches and up to 5-inch wide tires without adapters. Thule’s Transport T1 is easily capable of handling bikes of up to 60lb.
It will firmly hold the bikes, so it’s perfect for you to carry your bike. Fits 2″ trailer hitch receiver SUV VAN Truck. Will be only suitable for carring up bicycles with thin tires. This hitch mount could carry up to 2 bicycle quickly and safely.
Simply assembled and attached to the receiver hitch and you are ready to start use. Instruction is not included. Heavy-duty steel construction with durable black powder coated finish, this bike carrier can resist scratches and corrosion.
Adjustable (sliding) wheel chocks for 2 different lengthen Overall Dimension: 59″ X 23. 5″ X 23. 5″ The Bike Rack Carries up to 2 bikes bikes (child or adult).
I haven’t seen this mentioned in other reviews. My Large size, full suspension mtb frame, with 29 inch wheels, 2. 3 wide, doesn’t fit in the carrier at its maximum width. I made it work but doesn’t seems very secure, particularly with those cheap straps that were provided.
Can’t get tires to sit on rack correctly. just had to wedge it in but still doesn’t sit on the frame of the rack as it should. If I knew it wouldn’t fit a mtb with 29 inch wheels I would have bought something else, but now I have it and don’t want to deal with returning it so I will just make it work.
Definitely would recommend useing some type of ratchet straps or heavy duty bungee to secure it better to the rack. I wouldn’t feel comfortable driving down the road as it is. Bike would probably fall off the rack while going down the road if I just used what was provided with this product.
Well, I’m not terribly impressed and frankly surprised at the overall positive reviews. This is a typical Chinese mass produced, poorly constructed piece of junk. It came pre rusted, so that’s always convenient.
Assembly instructions are poorly printed, with just a blown up diagram, which actually would have been fine if it wasn’t a 4th or 5th generation of a bad copy. A picture would have been more appropriate.
The section that goes into the receiver on the hitch is very sloppy, with lots of wobble (nothing else I use the hitch for does this) which will undoubtedly crack from metal fatigue, or the welds will crack.
The pieces of velcro to hold the bike tires to the upright column don’t ad any integrity to the rack and the bike flops back and forth. Using the velcro to attach it too the frame is far more secure.
Bottom line, I does function, although poorly. I reserve 1 star reviews for items that are not what are advertised, or do not function as designed. I would never use this for any distance over a few miles, which is ultimately all I’ll use it for anyway, and ultimately, it does function so I’ll give it 2 stars.
Spend the extra money on a real bike rack manufactured by one of the larger well known brands. I’m not surprised at anything from Walmart being of inferior quality, I am however surprised at the overwhelming positive reviews of this product, which tells me that the company is probably offering coupons for positive reviews, or some other underhanded approach at marketing.
Bought this a while ago, and finally got to use it. Brought two bikes from Maine to Florida. Not difficult to put together. Took a little while, but was able to do it in the livingroom and carry outside when done.
Seems stable. The bikes never budged. I did use the velcro that came with it. The pieces are long and wrap around a few times, but I did buy some extra straps and used them also. The only thing I question is why the part that goes into the hitch is so long.
This makes the bikes sit quite far out away from my van. I’m considering having someone cut it to be a bit shorter and drill a new hole so that I can slide it in further to the hitch receiver.

The rack is a much better solution than stuffing my bike into a Subaru hatch. The rack made my cycling life much better. However, the hard plastic anti-sway stablizer and band, scratched the paint off my mountain bike where contact was made.
Being a mountain bike, I wasn’t too concerned, but the bike was newish and clean. The rack also gets loose in the hitch after riding around some short distances, and I have to tighten bolt all the time now.
I got a hitch stablizer coming that I hope makes things better. Alas every bike rack solution seems to have a built-in flaw. A shelf rack is probably better than a hanging rack but the shelf racks stick-out pretty far, and they could get lose as well.
Overall I am content with the function of this rack, but several things could and should be improved. The good: loading and unloading the bikes is fast and easy. The rack fits into my 2” receiver with minimal play and locks down with the supplied bolt.
Low profile and folding feature works as expected. The not-so-good: their is play in both pivot points with no way of tightening, so the rack bounces a little when loaded. Also, the release mechanism rattles inside the rack.
This rattle is loud enough to hear inside the vehicle, when all windows and doors are closed and driving down the road. So while the rack feels safe and secure, the design allows for excess play and noise that are mildly annoying.
So far these issues do not affect the safety or performance of the rack in any way.

SKS Hitch lock included Fits 2″ hitch receiver only. FatStraps (not included) are necessary for carrying fat bikes Maximum bike weight 45lbs/20. 5 kg ( Total maximum load 180lbs/82 kg).
Does everything that it claims to do. I have used it numerous times now, both with just the first section carrying two bikes and the extension, carrying 3 MTB’s. Holds the bikes solidly and doesn’t bounce around unnecessarily.
Great fit and finish. Great instructions. Just good quality all round.
SnugTite Stinger positions the rack securely into the hitch receiver The HitchSwitch lever allows you to tilt the rack down for rear vehicle access or tilt it up when not in use. Ratcheting arm and wheel tray secure bikes quickly without frame contact.

Fat bike adapter kit sold separately. Increase load capacity from two up to four bikes with the Thule T2 Pro X 2 Bike Add-on (sold separately, 2″ receiver only) Includes the Thule One Key System to lock the rack to the vehicle.
I bought this bike rack with the 2-bike add on, and there are some things you should know before you do the same. Unless you’re a big fan of Ikea furniture, in which case you’ll be fine. 1) It’s heavy.
Like, really heavy. I ended up buying a wheel to fasten on the bottom so I could roll it around. If I had to do it over I’d spend the extra $250 to get the XTR, which already has a wheel installed. But it was such a pain to put it together I don’t want to take it apart to return.
If you have the four-bike set up, you need at least another person to move it around. 2) It’s poorly engineered. As in, bolts don’t line up with pre-drilled holes and key pieces are made of plastic. I stripped a couple of bolts and had to go buy extra because it doesn’t come with extra hardware – I mean, for $1450.
why would it? 3) The instructions are next-level terrible. I mean, when I finally gave up and Googled a ‘how to’ video, the first thing the person said was. “The instructions are terrible. ” Also there isn’t an XT video anywhere to be found — just XTR.
So prepare to take things apart and put them back together through trial and error. 4) If you’re buying this rack because you want the flexibility to go between 2- and 4-bike set-ups. don’t. Once it’s set up for four bikes, it doesn’t go back to two.
I’m waiting for the kids to move out then I’ll convert it just the one time. Now the positive. 1) The ability to stabilize and lock the rack on the hitch is a nice feature. Although the lock on the hitch also falls into the ‘poorly engineered’ category.
I’m fairly sure it will stop working at one point and it’ll be locked onto my vehicle. 2) The bikes are nicely spaced apart. And it’s fairly easy to get in and out of the rear door without taking the bikes off.
Bottom line, if you’re looking for a 4-bike option that you put on your vehicle in the spring and leave it on until the fall, then this is an option for you. However if you’re looking for something that installs easily, can go from 2 to 4 bikes, and doesn’t take 4 hours to put together (counting buying the extra parts) — then keep looking my friends.
At this price point I wish it came with locks for the bike attachments. It does come with a key to lock the hitch though. I wish I had just spent the extra money and bought the XTR but live and learn! I missed that part in the specs when reading up on which rack to buy.
Ooops! However, I do like that the actual hook bit locks vs a cable lock to the frame like the XTR so have ordered the cylinders to make them lock, then will back up with my own heavy duty lock when extra security is needed.
I find it doesn’t stick out very far from the hitch so the wheel holder closest to the car hits the bumper so some people might need a hitch extender if you don’t want it to rub on your bumper. Otherwise, nice and stable, bikes don’t move around at all while driving.
Installation was a 2 person job but fairly straight forward. Attachment into the hitch is so nice and easy, such a great system. Tilt away from car is easy and wonderful. Other than the wheel attachment hitting my bumper, and the non inclusion of more locking cylinders I am happy with this rack.
🙂 4 starts, just because of the aforementioned reasons!.
The rack itself is fantastic, with a big catch. Yeah, didn’t realize that this rack doesn’t come with locks. The locks have to be purchased separately. There is a lock that will keep the hitch from being stolen, but no locks included for the bikes.
WHAT? I purchased the locks over a week ago and now they are lost in the mail. After a week of Thule and USPS “support” I remain unable to secure my bikes, have had to alter my vacation plans, and no resolution yet from the manufacturer or from the carrier.
All of this could have been avoided if locks were included with the rack.
Your bicycle is more than just a frame, tires, handlebars and pedals. You live for what might be around that next turn, that burn in your legs as you climb a rocky trail and that freefall feeling you get as you descend a long hill.
Your bike is not just a hobby; it is a gateway to the outdoors and your faithful companion in the wild. It was with this idea in mind that the CURT tray-style bike rack was built. From the BMX track to the paved trail and everything in between, bicycling is all about the ride.
The CURT tray-style bike rack promotes your biking experience unlike any other because of its unique, three-point support system. It is made to be easier to use and keep bikes more secure, holding them at three points of contact.
Instead of hanging the bike by its crossbar, the loop-like tray-style cradles hole the bike’s wheels, keeping it secure on each end. The third point is an adjustable, ratcheting arm that moves up and down and locks over the crossbar, keeping the entire bike firmly held in place.
Both the tray-style cradles and the vertical ratcheting arm are highly adjustable and can fit virtually any size bike, from a giant adult mountain bike to a single-gear kids’ bike. CURT tray-style bike racks are not your average ten-speed.
In fact, they are packed with features to truly make it all about the ride. They feature a hitch-mounted design to work with your vehicle’s trailer hitch, and they come with a tilt-away feature to allow the entire rack to tilt away from the vehicle.
This makes it easy to open a hatchback door or trunk and access the rear cargo area. Tray-style bike racks also feature a foldable, adjustable frame and an anti-wobble shank. Whether the road ahead is the winding course of your own personal Tour de France or the twists and turns of the forest trail, the CURT tray-style bike rack is coated in a durable powder coat finish to prevent rust and ensure a long life.
This model fits 1-1/4″ or 2″ receiver tubes and holds up to two bikes.
This is my first bike rack and was excited to get this tray style rack because these types are suppose to offer better stability and ease of use. The metal looks good and the attachments seem fine. However, It is so sloppy.
Every joint/connection has WAY to much play and literally flops around. You cannot get it tight enough. I have a 2″ receiver and it comes with an adapter to make the rack “work/fit”. Even here its a sloppy fit and has way to much play.
It sways up and down, left and right. I use 3-4 tow ratchets in addition to make it stable enough to use. I can’t wait to upgrade. Horrible purchase, better off saving money and upgrading.
This is a great rack. Exactly as described. HOWEVER, be aware that a step thru frame or a ladies bike will probably require a bar across the top of the bike (going from the handlebar stem to seat post) as the arms do not go low enough to hold the bike in place.
This is a very easy fix and well worth the effort. You can find a bar adapter for around $20. The tire holders easily adjust to hold any length bike. The hook arms ratchet up and down the post and securely lock in place.
The best bicycle rack for the price on the market. Very sturdy! If fact, when the rack was not in use we were hit in the rear by a careless driver. Because of Curt’s hardened steel construction we suffered very little damage to our SUV.
So impressed I bought another Curt rack to replace the damaged one.
A bike rack for a truck hitch is a great way to transport your bike with you on the go. There are many different types and styles of bike racks available, so you can find one that best suits your needs.
When choosing a bike rack, be sure to consider how many bikes you need to transport, the types of bikes you have, and the weight capacity of the rack. Most bike racks can accommodate two or three bikes, but some can hold up to five bikes.
You should also make sure that the rack is compatible with your truck’s hitch receiver.
