20 Best Bike Case For Air Travel (2023 Updated)

This case intrigued me because of the hard sided bottom and the integrated modular stand inside. The stand makes breaking down and building up the bike a breeze (way better than struggling on the floor).

I should have realized that all these features come at a price. Airline oversized baggage. This beast weighs over 31 lbs, which means you are almost guaranteed to pay more at the counter unless your bike is under 19 lbs.

The build quality is solid as is everything with Thule with the exception of the hardside bottom. Mine is warped/twisted, and even though this doesn’t really effect the performance, it just looks wonky when rolling it through the airport as it leans over.

Overall, I like the case. It provides good support. The little bike covers they provide are excellent, keeping things organized and with additional protection. I am disappointed that on its first trip from the USA to Europe, the arrived with the wheel broken out of its housing.

I was able to roll the case; however, it was difficult. I’m just hoping I can get it home without falling off. Other than the poor wheel construction assembly, it is excellent!.

This is a great mountain bike bag with small stand to help assemble and disassemble. The stand adds extra weight to the bag, so be aware of weight when you pack for the extra airline fees. The interior padding for tires and velcro strapping for handle bars were intuitive.

The third wheel in front adds to the mobility of this bag. Be sure to remove it when you check your bag in otherwise it will fall off or break. I love this bag and it will get a LOT of use!.

The Scicon Aerocomfort 3. 0 Road is light, easy to pack and provides excellent protection for your much loved bicycle. The internal frame and straps lock your bike in place without the need to remove handlebars (handy for fancy integrated bar/stem bikes) It quickly adapts from quick release to through axle for disc brake bikes.

The internal wheel storage fits my 700c x40 tyres and has great padding. A small shaped bag to store shoes, clothes, helmet, etc is a nice added bonus.

This bike bag consistently achieves top ratings, and upon first use, one can easily see why. Traveling with your pride and joy is always a balancing act between protection and weight, space, etc. and this one seems to tick nearly every box.

The level of protection is not as good as a bike box but in four flights the only noticeable impact or damage was that the steerer was slightly out of line (and therefore must have received a decent knock somewhere).

However, the reduced protection is offset by weight, ease of use and manoeuvrability. Some carriers allow you to take your bike for free but up to the weight of 23kg. This bag (being one of the lightest on the market) means you can pack the pack the bike bag with a significant amount of equipment and souvenirs from your travels and still manage to keep under the weight limit.

If you’re travelling on your own, this bag is also so easy to move and carry onto public transport. However, the greatest advantage is its simplicity of use. Even the most maladroit cyclist can pack and unpack the bag without assistance within 5 minutes.

Just take the wheels off and pedals (you can even avoid taking off the pedals) and attach the bike to the frame and the adaptations to allow a through-axles are excellent. This bag takes the hassle out of travel and allows you to more time to plan and enjoy the roads ahead.

I bought this for my Tri bike as I have a number of races abroad. A lot of reviews suggested the elites use this or similar soft bags for their triathlon bikes so I took the plunge. The bag is very easy to use.

Just take the wheels off. There are some great instruction videos on YouTube. I have travelled twice by plane with it and my bike is fine. Once of the handlebar his was a little twist but was easily rectified.

The bag could do with better protection of the handlebars and that would be my main suggestion. Over all happy with the purchase but still slightly concerned about how it would survive a proper battering by the baggage handlers.

I have mixed feelings. Pre purchase I thought that surely the designers could be 100% certain that your fancy $5K carbon bike would arrive at its destination safe. And, while mine did, it was not a given.

Yes, it’s super easy to get the wheels on and be out the door but, if someone was wanton in their carelessness they could damage the bike. I’m actually packing up for the return trip tonight and a bit nervous.

The bottom of the bag is entirely soft and without shape, you insert fiberglass rods to give it shape. Its sort of solid and it did make the trip, but again, $5K bike and hard box and some more BS at arrival or this and some anxiety.

I’m just a bit worried that in the areas in between the reinforcements there’s only 4-6′ air and taught fabric protecting the frame inside. if that makes any sense. Look, the bag is slick, looks good, rolls well.

If you don’t want a hard plastic box and zipties holding the frame and parts together, this may be it. FYI, it took me an hour plus of struggling to get the rods in the first time. They are incredibly tight, so leave some time to get it packed pre-flight.

Don’t get me wrong, bag is really good. IMO better than any other brand. Pros (compared to the 285L): More room and length Generous wheel space Solid, improved design overall Con: Bars go in front of fork, anything over a 780 is super tight.

I did 800s but I feel like a big hit on them they could be damaged. Overall not a huge issue, would recommend and will keep and use. Would love if they make more height for the bars or another design.

Better than the 285L but not the Pro. The Pro is a few hundred more so unless you travel a ton not too concerned. Additional recommendations: Regardless of bag get some pool noodles and cut to length and zip to frame for additional protection.

Take rotors off. Although protected slight bend could ruin them or make it difficult to straighten.

Sturdy case! Thoughts after the first trips: XS just fits my giant tcr size M. The case itself fits perfectly in a stationwagon (some without even l getting the rear seats down) A tip: don’t follow the instructions too much if you feel like your handlebars don’t fit properly.

I had to reposition the handlebars, because it got my wheel out of true the first time I used it. Also: the amount of protection and the stand means that the case weighs 20kg, so you have a good 3kgs left for most air carriers to play with.

It’s a good idea to get some extra bubble wrap if you want to be extra safe. Quick delivery as well by Alltricks!.

Great recommendation from the guys at Sigma. The Pakgo is a great bike box with brilliant functionality. Easily fits disc break bike, with plenty of extra room. Actually a lot larger internal space than expected.

A really well thought out and designed box.

The unboxing was extremely thought out. All materials were easy to locate. as usual with Chinese directions allot is left to interpretation. However, wiring was a breeze. Practically plug and play. The mechanical aspects of the build were the challenging part.

There were some hardware missing. Oh, the Tronxy logo was placed on the controller with stick on letters. Then covered over with Scotch Tape. Bad idea. When removing the tape, letters came with it. Op instructions are hard to follow due to translation problems.

In closing a challenging build. This DIY build not for an inexperienced builder.

This printer is a great value! but if you know nothing about 3d printing you should start with something thats more beginner friendly. This is my second printer now and i had to learn some knew things to get this printer running nicely.

In the end i respect the design and plan to make this a high end printer. Its a good foundation at a price a can afford!.

Overall positive experience traveling by air with the Dakine bike bag, but I wanted to add to what others (including Dakine ambassadors on other platforms) have said regarding the bag’s advertised ‘light weight’.

The bag weighs ~17 lbs, and most airlines in USA have extra fees for checked bags over 50 lbs. In 2022, it pretty reasonable for a trail, enduro, or DH bike to weigh 33 lbs or more with proper tires, etc.

I wouldn’t necessarily want the bag to be any lighter, but know that it leaves little margin for staying under the airlines’ 50 lb weight limit. I. e. no extra stuff in the bag, bike and parts only. For my trip, I packed and weighed everything at home, and elected to put the brake rotors and pedals in my carry-on bag just in case.

I ended up at 49 lbs at the baggage counter. For reference, my bike is a 2018 Transition Scout GX, size medium. Pretty beefy aluminum frame and mostly aluminum parts. YMMV.

I have had this bag for about a year now and within that year it has taken about 20 plane rides all over the country hauling my full suspension trail bike. I am able to fit my carbon fiber bike, helmet, shoes, and water bottle in the bag and keep it under Delta’s 50lb check bag weight.

Packing the bike up takes 10-15 minutes due to the easy to understand color matching straps and labels. I haven’t had any damage to my bike the bag could have prevented. The only issue I have seen is that the straps are riveted into the bag and they pull out easy.

This happened to me within the first few trips but Dakine has yet to respond to any warranty claims. My only idea is to re-rivet my own “new” straps. However, even with a couple missing straps the bag holds the bike in firmly.

I think the bag is 100% worth the price for the weight and durability.

Bought one of these before my first trip to Whistler. I ended up using it for my wife’s bike because my downhill bike would have pushed it over the weight limit, so I used a heavier borrowed bag (evoc pro) for the downhill bike since I was going over the weight limit anyway.

It held up nicely and everything arrived safely. It held a 2022 Juliana Roubion, poc full face helmet, and Leatt air flex. It clocked in at 53lbs at the airport and they let it slide for the 50lb weight requirement.

It would’ve been under 50 had we not packed the extra items in there. I’ll probably buy another one of these for my bike as well for future trips.

After using the Transition case to fly from MA to Colorado and back, all of my initial doubts about the case were eliminated. A truly easy case to travel with! Yes, it is a bit larger and heavier than traditional clamshell cases, but not significantly.

About 20 inches DIM larger (L W H) and about 5lbs heavier. My brother traveled the same trip with a clamshell case great case, but the Transition’s vertical orientation and rail mount system proved to be much more travel friendly.

Little disassembly of my bike was required to fit in the Transition case. The front wheel was removed and the forks locked into the fork mount rail. I pulled the rear wheel and swapped in a spare rear hub/cassette/skewer and left my rear derailleur mounted.

This protected my rear triangle and tensioned the chain to keep it from damaging the frame. I also removed the saddle/post and handlebar/stem. Bar/stem was zip tied to top tube and forks. Entire frame was covered with pipe foam, but since the case does not contact the frame, this was for extra precaution only.

Wheelset was placed in the provided wheel bags and the top cover was locked in place using the two ratchet buckles. I secured a TSA combination lock through the D rings. TSA opened and inspected the Transition case in both directions, but there was no evidence of inspection, other than the TSA information tag inside.

Usually cases (ski, bicycle, etc. ) are not repacked or sealed the same after TSA inspection. I assume because of the simplicity of closure, the Transition case was completely resealed exactly as I had packed it.

Conversely, my brother’s clamshell case had 4 straps left unsecured by TSA. The baggage handlers in Denver commented how easy the case was for them to handle when they returned it to me. The Transition case has a few very minor scuffs after travel, but unless inspected closely it still looks new.

All hardware and handles remained securely attached and survived the trip with no damage. The vertical orientation of the Transition case makes it very stable and easy to maneuver. Most cases roll in a horizontal position, which can make navigating narrow spaces and crowded airport terminals challenging.

The Transition case is about 6 inches taller than clamshell cases, but it rolled (upright) into the rear of a minivan with plenty of clearance. I did have to lay the case on its side to transport in a midsize SUV.

Upon arrival at my destination, I slid the stem/bar back on the steerer, realigned, and set proper torque. Did the same with post/saddle I removed the hub/cassette assembly and fitted my rear wheel. Finally, I removed the bike from the rail mount and installed my front wheel.

Ready to ride! For the parts of my trip where transportation of bike by vehicle was required, I used the open (top removed) Transition case as a rail mount carrier in the back of a mini van. A very stable and protected way to transport that only required removal of the front and rear wheels.

Seeing how well the Transition case traveled to my destination, I no longer had ANY doubts about traveling with the Transition. Only suggestion might be a backup strap (rubber or velcro) to lock the rear of the rail into the bottom of the case just as a precaution in case the primary lock mechanism is dislodged by large impact.

Bought this last season. Tried to use it this year and its useless. The knobs to raise/lower the rack have BOTH failed. They just spin and won’t tighten/loosen. What a piece of garbage.

I feel like they cheaped out on the underside bracket. The whole thing is held onto the rack with two bolts and a narrow metal plate that fits diagonally from the front bolt to the opposite rear bolt.

This allows the carrier to twist on the rack. Still secure, but a poor design.

Good protection, light, gets the job done.

Il se tient plutôt bien en largeur un fois le vélo dedans. Cela permet un rangement sans trop d’effort en enlevant les roues, en laissant la selle, si on le souhaite et en tournant simplement le guidon à 90° dans l’axe.

J’ai aussi acheté la protection de fourche de la même marque (super et bien pratique !). Les petits moins : L’intérieur n’est pas aménagé cependant (pour le prix), j’ai donc placé une lame de carton compressé légère et sécurisé le kit avec des velcros et des mousses en U sur les tubes et parties fragiles.

L’emplacement des sangles n’est pas le plus fonctionnel, seulement deux prévues pour le portage à l’épaule – des poignées supplémentaires seraient bienvenues. Et il reste assez grand (mais comme souvent hélas), pratique pour y placer le vélo mais pas très compact.

En conclusion : – idéal pour tout type de vélo (VTT, Route) quelque soit la taille (mon route taille 60 Orbéa orca rentre) – attention avec le volume assez imposant de la valise, surtout dans les trains intercités.

Strong case but it is semi-complicated to close because of the over and under 4 times all the way around. TSA NEVER knows how to close it and it always arrives incorrectly closed which crushes the bike and contents fall out.

4 times already this has happened. They just put the 4 straps on and smash the two sides together. Hinges woul remove this problem. TSA doesnt are and are not responsible so.

Lightweight, sturdy, great protection! Saved me tons of time and money I would have otherwise spent renting a high end bike in Europe.

So far so good! This box fits my bike just right and seem very solid and great on the flights ready to go any time. Easy to put together and ready to roll.

High quality materials, high quality construction, and ample storage. Well-thought out too: though most US airlines have discontinued bicycle fees, there’s still oversize and overweight baggage fees to contend with.

But the B2’s dimensions and light weight means the case, the bike, some tools, shoes, helmet and kit comes in comfortably below the airlines’ limits. I’ve paid NOTHING in fees since traveling with the bag.

The customer service has been UNBELIEVABLE. Every call with them has been met with more than I was expecting. Every call. I wish it was a bit wider so it’s less tippy and not so tight a fit. (I pack a gravel bike with 700c wheels in there).

I wish it was just a bit shorter in length so it fits better in my car. (@Orucase, the RAV4 is the best-selling SUV in the US, FYI. Reach out and let me help you with this!) And front wheels would be awesome for long treks from the check-in counter to the oversize baggage check.

In short, the case is awesome and the company is too. I’ve recommended it to all my friends that ride, to anyone who stops to ask me about it in the airport (rolling through the terminal it attracts a lot of attention!), and to everyone at the destinations I travel to who are amazed that I’m able to bring my bike with me.

Unless you are willing to pay overweight baggage fees everytime you fly (I’m not) and have endless storage space (my bikes take up too much space already), you need a lightweight collapsible travel case.

This one hits a sweet spot: the Orucase B2 mtb + my 30lb MTB + plus some packing material still squeaks in under 50lbs. Perfect! I take off the pedals and pack them in another bag, and I put my helmet in the case because it is the single lightest & bulkiest item I need to bring with me.

Previously, I’ve shipped my bike places where I would be staying longer and riding more, or rented a bike in places where I would only ride a few times and it wasn’t worth the transit time to ship my own bike.

I’ve now flown with my bike 3 times in the last 5 weeks (including two short trips where I would have rented an inferior bike in the past, and one where I would have shipped my bike) and the bag has already paid for itself in saved costs, plus the advantage of having my own bike rather than a rental.

Perfect!.

I was a bit skeptical, but this case actually lived up to the hype. It is high quality and I wasn’t concerned about the bike at all. I was able to check it on United as standard baggage without any fees (even though it is technically over the 62 linear inch limit).

On both flights, it came out in the oversized baggage area, even though I had checked it as standard baggage. I would suggest adding your baggage totals before arriving at the airport – this way its less likely that the airline will question the case size.

Suggestions for packing – it took quite a while the first time to figure out the best packing method. Having lots of rags / old towels around to protect things like the carbon seat post and keep grease from getting everywhere helps a lot.

The one point I was concerned about was the rear drop-outs which end up in the top corner of the case. I put a few layers of old towel over that area before closing the case and that seemed sufficient.

My only suggestion for Orucase is to publish some additional how-to videos on how to secure the fork and handlebars to the downtube. This was pretty tricky and can make the packing difficult if not done properly.

I found that some voile straps helped a lot here to secure everything before dropping it into the case.

End result: This backpack served me well, and lived up to the hype! Caveats: It’s not a hard shell case, and you might worry about your bike. Pros: You can wear it like a backpack! You can literally *run* through the airport with this thing on your back, dragging your roller suitcase behind you, to make your next flight when your travel plans leave little time between flights.

Pros: It fits in the trunk of a taxi! You don’t need to arrange for a larger vehicle to get from the airport to your place of lodging. Pros: You can pack this thing full of all your other gear! Cons: You gotta disassemble your bike.

It helps if you have mechanical brakes (to remove and disconnect the handlebars). And it helps if you carry a “torque table” and a torque wrench (check out Icetoolz E219 Ocarina torque wrench) so you can reassemble your bike to spec.

Caveats: Be sure you remove your disc brake rotors! My experience: I flew from US to Perú (for the Andean Raid!) and this bicycle travel case aka backpack was exactly the bag for me. One of the main selling points of this case is that it’s touted as an avoid-the-fees bag.

But if you calculate the linear dimension, width + height + depth, this bag ends up at 67 or more inches (mine was packed full, so well over 70″). But Delta Airline’s oversized baggage fee applies after 62″.

Nonetheless, I was not charged an oversized baggage fee, in either direction. I also checked two pieces of luggage — my roller bag and the Orucase — but I was not charged any fee. It could have been because I was flying internationally, so I was allowed two bags, but I also think Delta’s policy for bikes is not to charge the oversized fee.

(You’ll want to read the fine print on Sporting Equipment. ) In any case, Orucase lived up to the Pay No Fees slogan here. Second, I read in another review to remove disc brake rotors, but I didn’t do so on my departing flight.

But when I arrived at my destination, I had to find a mechanic to fix my bent rotor. I think what happened is that Orucase suggests packing your rear wheel with the cassette facing inward, which left the rotor facing outward, and then when I wore the case as a backpack, the rotor warped around my back.

But for the return trip home, I had my new mechanic friend remove the rotors, and everything arrived home undamaged. Finally, I mentioned worrying before. Which I did. I packed this bag full. I had a lot of bikepacking gear with me.

And I brought a hanging scale with me so I could pack the bag to the 50 lb. airline weight limit. But I figured TSA would inspect my bag, which they did, and I was concerned because the bag is not a hard shell case, so I worried that something might get bent or otherwise damaged, or that TSA would repack it poorly.

But besides the disc brake rotor issue I mentioned, everything survived intact and undamaged. Especially on the return trip, I inspected the bag at the baggage pickup, and I reassembled my bike at home the next day, and everything was perfectly fine.

The bag is by no means “perfect”, but there is no “perfect” bicycle luggage. You either want a hard shell case that’ll survive any situation, and will require less disassembly of your bike, but will be a pain to lug around and might incur more fees.

Or you’ll want this case, which requires a little more disassembly, might make you worry about it, but in the end will get your bike where you need it, and you can throw it on your back and hike around town without any hassle.

I flew domestic on Southwest in December 2021. On the way out, the airline agent immediately identified the bag as a bike bag. I tried to argue the fee should not apply because it’s not overweight, but then she insisted on measuring the bag and then charged me an oversize fee.

On the way back, the agent didn’t recognize it as a bike, but immediately said “it’s oversize” and charged me the oversize fee. I’m frustrated because the reviews I saw on this website, and the description of the bag, make it seem like you have at least a 50/50 shot at getting this bag through without paying baggage fees.

But because I’m a petite female (5’2), I think the bag looks especially large with me, and I doubt I will ever get away with not paying the oversize fee, which was a big part of why I chose this bag in the first place.

The bag itself is well made. My only complaint about the bag itself is that the bag’s side panel reinforcement was not properly aligned, so the hub of one of my wheels poked through the thinner fabric of the bag (just above where the reinforcement panel is) during travel.

I’ve only used it on this one roundtrip and now there’s a small hole on the side. An easy fix, but something that should not happen given the price of this bag.

Very light and portable for carrying a full-sized mountain bike. It had trouble fitting my medium Epic Evo, and I couldn’t use the padded insert at all, so I wrapped a piece of cardboard around the headtube to give it some protection.

Otherwise it would be right up against the zipper with no padding at all. If you had a large or XL bike I don’t know how you’d use this bag at all. You have to disassemble the bike a LOT, and the fork doesn’t fit in the side like they show, so you have to wrap all the pieces in cardboard or bubble wrap to stop them from rubbing on each other.

Overall, I’d recommend it for international travel. For anything domestic, just go with something bigger that’s easier to use.

I bought this last month for a trip to France. It was easy to pack the bike into it. You just need to remove the pedals and wheels. It’s straightforward to attach the frame to the base. However on it’s maiden voyage, part of the protective lining on the outside was ripped off, and my bike handlebars were bent.

I get the impression it was thrown around by the airport staff, but I would’ve hoped it would have faired better on it’s first use. I complained to sigma sports but they would not offer me any refund/assistance.

We haven’t used this one as yet, however we have a Scicon Bag exactly the same and it is fantastic for travel on aeroplane. After experiencing how easy it was to pack the bike and glides along when travelling, not difficult to push or pull.

Lockable and external handles remove for flights.

I feel more safe when use this bag instead to use any car rack for my expensive bike. This bag can save your car interior and the bike on transportation. You have to remove the bike wheels and that’s it.

No need for use any tool to remove handlebar and saddle too. Just place the bike into the bag zip it and that’s all. I also bought the Scicon set for brake lever and gear protector to maximize my peace of mind.

I recommend off course this bag for this purpose, and not for flight cargo or anything else if you have to left the bike to anyone. Is very small when you don’t use it. You just pack it and use the bag comes with.

Very good quality. For flight cargo purpose you have to check the Ameritech Evolution from Scicon.

Very good product ,,very happy & lots of space. Bike fits in with ease. Maybe a small modification can be made to make shoulder straps longer and look to maybe put a set of wheels on to drag the bag along.

In die Seitentaschen neben dem Rahmen werden die Laufräder verstaut. Zwischen Laufräder und Rahmen befindet sich eine dünne Polsterung, welche vor Kratzern schützt. Mit dem Schulterriemen lässt sich die Tasche inkl.

Fahrrad auch halbwegs bequem tragen. Längere Wanderungen sollte man damit jedoch nicht planen. Wenn man beide Laufräder oben zusammenbindet wird ein Umfallen der Laufräder verhindert. Einziger Nachteil: der Hinterbau steht unmittelbar auf dem Boden, d.

h. das Schaltwerk muss mit demontiert werden. Hier wäre beispielsweise ein Schaumstoffwürfel praktisch. Transportiert wurden beide Räder bisher im ICE 4, was außerhalb der Stoßzeiten gut funktioniert.

Die Gepäckablagen sind groß genug, um das Rad liegend zu transportieren.

TranslateShow in original languageIch habe mir die Tasche für den Transport eines Rennrades (Rahmengröße XL) nach Italien gekauft und bin sehr zufrieden. Gut verarbeitet und geräumig, stabile Bodenplatte, zugegeben dünne Trennwände zwischen Haupt- & Seitenfächern.

Der Lenker muss zwar demontiert werden, dafür passen aber noch Schuhkarton und Helm mit rein. Ein Stück Rohrisolierung aus dem Baumarkt bietet sich als Kettenblattschutz an, letzteres steht sonst direkt auf dem Boden.

Zudem nicht vergessen, die Bremsbacken mit Pappe zu sichern! Die Tasche ist gut mit dem Riemen über der Schulter zu tragen, sie passt so gerade quer auf eine 2er Bank im ICE 3 oder auf die Gepäckablage.

Orucase was awesome to work with. I was on the fence between a B2 mtb and the airport ninja, but the B2 was not yet in stock and I had a short fuse before my next trip. Orucase rushed an airport ninja to me, but my bikes just did not quite fit because of an integrated stem on my road bike and my MTB frame was just slightly too large.

They readily accepted the return and applied the rental fee to purchase of a B2 + FPK when it came in stock, which fits my bikes perfectly. I have flown cross country multiple times with my 58cm road bike and my large frame 29er full suspension mtn bike since, keeping under the 50 lb limit and avoiding fees (note the B2 mtb + FPK is just under 20 lb, so plan accordingly – I carried my pedals and shoes in my carry on for my MTB).

The bikes are well protected and arrived safely.

I haven’t had a chance to travel with the bag yet, but I am very pleased with the quality of the construction. It is always hard to tell online, but the nylon seems thick and sturdy and the bottom seems very solid.

Good wheels as well. You could use it as a backpack, but that would be hard. I do wish there was some rigidity to the top of the bag. So, I attached some elastic loops on the inside top and will use a couple short pieces of PVC in there.

I also wish there were better instructions on how to actually place a mountain bike in the bag. That said, when I had questions, customer service was very resposive.

Complication néanmoins surmontable, qui rend le produit flexible pour intégrer totalement le vélo dans la housse ; – les poches intérieurs sont de couleur claire. et ne vont pas le rester longtemps avec les frottements de la chaîne de vélo.

Le reste est parfait. Les poches intérieures sont pratiques, y compris pour caler les roues de part et d’autre du vélo (lui assurant une certaine stabilité).
