20 Best Base And Top Coat Gel (2022 Updated)

This is a great set. I actually just ordered a second one. The base coat lasts I would say 2-3 weeks before chipping and that’s with little nail prep. It would last longer if you filed your nail more.

The top coat cures not tacky so it’s quick and easy.

Makartt top and base coat The base coat works well to keep nails on. You should definitely invest in a decent non acid primer if you’re planning to use the Makartt polygel. The top coat is like glass once it’s cured.

The shiniest top coat ever. Unlike other top coats, this one doesn’t ever lose its shine and you can’t see scuff marks from everyday wear and tear. Just make sure you don’t get it on the skin when you go to cure it.

It’ll harden and it’ll be hard to get off.

My absolute favorite brand for DYI nails! Started doing my own nails at home a little over a year ago, yes I have tried other brand and no they do not hold up as well as this one! Definitely the only brand I buy out recommend buying to others! It’s the best!.

I was hesitant to purchase this because my prior experience with this brand (Ombre kit) was disappointing. But I’m delighted with the Chrome art nail kit in Chameleon. Depending on the light, nail color can look lizard green, bronze, or garnet; glitter sparkle is discreet.

Every time I extend my hand to store clerks, waiters, bank tellers, etc. they stop me in mid-sentence to compliment me. I’d give 5 stars but the second kit I purchased, in Bronze, is less distinctive.

(The monochromatic color scheme is pretty subtle–maybe I have to play with it more for maximum effect?). Go for the Chameleon, but make sure to cover your work surface thoroughly because the glitter flakes are whisper thin and end up *everywhere.

* Otherwise, application is straightforward and simple. Durability is average, though I found that with Chameleon touch-ups are easy — just apply a bit more of the black polish, then dab on more glitter with the stamper and voila, chips are gone.

So YoungNails is a professional brand. I like this stain resistant top coat because, being a hair stylist it keeps color from staining my nails. It’s a high gloss shine but you will need to wipe off the tacky layer.

15 mil and $15. per bottle it’s pricey but worth it. I recommend it because I don’t know of any other brand that has one. 😍🥰.

This product is hands down AMAZING!! I use this on my hair stylist clients tanning clients! Hair color does not even stain your nails when using this top coat! It’s that’s good!! Only negative thing that sucks is it’s not carried at cosmoprof or salon centric only online on the young nails website which means you have to pay for shipping any time you need to order it.

So it gets pretty expensive because of that!.

The no wipe too coat is to die for!!! It leaves nails looking absolutely flawless. It applies like butter. I couldn’t honestly rave about this top coat all day. If you love your clients and want them to keep coming back, invest in some of this.

Your nails will never look better. I swear this stuff was made by god himself.

Igel is my absolute favorite gel brand. The gel base and top is a daily staple for myself and clients. It lasts a long time without peeling and the top coat is super shiny. No smell and always cures well.

I use it with my dip powder as well as underneath gel polish. It’s the best.

OK, so I was super curious to see if this lived up to it’s gel manicure claims. I would say it absolutely did! Went on easily and very smoothly. Easy to re-swipe while still wet to correct any areas but also dried fairly quickly.

Dried well, was still clear when dry, and just overall easy to use/control. I used 2 coats (letting it dry completely between coats) and it was crazy how well it resembled a gel manicure! That is what definitely gets the 4 stars.

However, I wouldn’t consider it a 5 star because it chipped so easily! If it hadn’t, it would have been a 5 star for sure. Not even 2 days in, the ends started chipping (like big chunks) and taking the color i had under with it.

I used it carefully, I wait fully for dry time, and I usually do nails before bed to let it set all night. Still chipped pretty badly. I ended up taking it all off by end of day 2. Not sure how to get it not to chip so easily (wasn’t doing anything wild with my nails) but if you can, it’s great! I think it would be worth trying, but keep this in mind if you use your hands a lot where it would affect your nails.

I have always been an Essie lover, almost all the nail polish I have is Essie. I was super excited when I saw this gel-setter top coat! I love going to the nail salon for a mani-pedi, however it can get pricy and it doesn’t always turn out perfect.

This top coat is amazing! After using an Essie colored polish, I put this gel-setter on top, no other products needed. It plumps up my nails and gives them a professional gel look. It also lasts for quite a while.

Typically regular nail polish for me will last a few days maybe a week if I don’t do anything strenuous with my hands. But this top coat is still on, with no chipping for over a week already! I absolutely love it! It also comes off way easier than traditional gel polish.

I have been making more effort to do my nails and other fun girly beauty routines despite working from home. I love that this Essie Gel Setter Top Coat gives me that glossy look of gel, without the additional time and hassle of using actual gel nail polish and curing with a UV lamp.

I usually apply a base coat, then a couple coats of nail polish (drying between each one), then finally one coat of this on top. My nails still look great even though normally it would have been a chipped mess by now.

Im surprised how bright and opaque this white is! Very happy with it. I have been trying out different kind of white gel polish. Randomly come into it, I always use some sort of builder gel, like orly builder in a bottle, or gelish structure gel, to strengthen my nails.

I have nature long nails but I do need some help to strengthen them. The ibd bright white building gel is just perfect for me. I like to use two thin-ish coats of the building gelof course the usual base/top gel polish.

It is thicker than a normal gel color polish, but similar to other builder gel. I really love how bright and opaque it is. I tried many white gel polishes, many of them take 3 coats to be completely opaque, and this one only takes 2.

It also give a very even finish. I didnt try it with the building gel top coat, only use it with my normal top coat, which works fine. One thing to remind, use a top coat that wont turn slightly yellow after cure.

Updated review after trying servals different shades:I almost tried all the shades I think, after falling in love with the bright white, I ordered a few other shades, sheer pink, cover pink, milky whiteforget the exact shade name.

Im disappointed with the cover pink shade. It is streaky, not even coverage in 2 coats. Personally I prefer the cover pink for gelish structure gel, it looks perfect in 2 coats and looks really nice on its own.

The other 2 shades sheer pink and milky white, they are okay and nothing to complain about. I can only recommend the bright white shade from this line.

This is a great, thick, building gel. It’s easy to use and does self level. It feels like a hard gel when filed which I really like about it. It’s nice and shiny, it gives great depth to any design, and easy to remove.

This is a great product for people who are always changing things up and it is very strong. A great product to use if you want to do something like Halloween zombie nails that look all gnarly because it is easily soaked off!! This is a great option provider, you can build up your nails, use it thinly just to strengthen them and keep them natural, you can use it on top of hard gel, you can use it to extend your nails, and you retain the option of easy removal.

As a newbie to this whole builder in a bottle craze, I have to say that this was actually easier than applying several coats of regular polish. The beautiful, nude pink color looks so clean. And those are my natural nails in the picture I provided.

I put a coat of clear over the top of the Builder and I love it!I most definitely will be buying this product again and I will be looking for other colors.

Let me start out by saying I’ve been doing my own gel manicures for about two years now. I’m a perfectionist and will only use products that are high quality and have staying power. I’m a massive fan of Gelish as a whole.

All of their polishes are ready to work with and I’ve never had a bad reaction. Gelish can be on the expensive side, but to me it’s 100% worth the cost. I love this top coat. It’s crystal clear and doesn’t have any yellow hues, like some of the other brands I’ve tried.

I have been buying various gel polishes over time to build up my colors for my clients. Today I had to throw away 9 bottles of gelish polishes because they were sticky, gummy, and the brushes were ruined.

I know the lids were on tight because I had to twist harder than usual to open them. They aren’t any older than the other brands I have in my collection & gelish is the only brand out of 200+ bottles that have done this which leads me to believe it’s definitely the brand.

That’s an estimated $150 I now have to replace & will obviously not be buying gelish to do so.

This product works wonderfully as a gel top coat! I have been doing my own gels at home for a few years now and this is the best topcoat I have found to date. The formula is thick enough to provide a strong, glossy topcoat that protects the polish underneath, while not becoming too thick “goupy”.

Cures very well under LED light (I believe UV works too, but I use LED personally) and makes gels last for weeks, even when done at home as opposed to a salon!.

As a licensed professional nail tech I actually only use OPI gel base coat! It works on all my clients and provides long lasting wear! If don’t really care for the OPI gel top coat because it does pick up color from things people touch, like it stains easily.

There are better top coats out there.

I have been using OPI for years. I do think that it’s a brand that is a pioneer in its industry. All the colors are so beautiful. I was recently sent a complimentary VoxBox @ OPI and @ Influenster. I love all the colors and was delighted to see the strengthening base coat.

It truly is an amazing product. I was afraid to see how my nails would like after removal of gel polish. To my surprise they were just as healthy!!! I would recommend OPI gel polish to anyone over other brands.

I am a licensed nail tech and have worked with other brands as well. I feel that OPI gel polish has a great selection of colors and is long lasting and above all does not damage nails and is super easy to remove!!! opi gel color nail polish.

I have used various gel polish base and top coats, never have I used one that gives such a beautiful shine as OPI top coat, it should be called mega shine. It was super easy to use it isn’t too runny and even when I applied a generous layer on my nails it never once ran or leaked into the cuticle or side walls.

(My previous gel top coat would run and often I would need to flash cure every couple of nails to prevent this). The top coat does leave a tacky layer of which you need a gel residue wipe off solution to remove this.

I went back and forth between this product and the Orly Builder-in-a-bottle. but now that Ive had a chance to wear Body Guard and do a few infills, I am really glad I chose it!🤗I am using this product solely as an overlay on my natural nails, and it works wonderfully for that.

Body Guard has an easy to control formula, which makes it perfect for beginners – you just swipe it on, exactly like polishing your nails. 👌 This product can also be built up on the nail too, much like a builder gel.

I have not experienced ANY lifting, peeling, or chipping with this product. I do prep my nails thoroughly before every application. My routine is posted below this review, for anyone that may be interested.

☺The brush does take some getting used to its a little too wide for pinkie nails. I work around that by using a small detail brush for nail art, to apply the gel close to my cuticle area. Body Guard is extremely glossy on its own and soaks off easily, which I LOVE.

It is also really crystal clear and never cures with bubbles. ❤As a side note: I also have a small sidewall break on my middle nail atm 😖 which happened prior to purchasing and this product is keeping everything together while it grows out.

Body Guard feels extremely flexible, even despite my best efforts to hit, bang, and bend my long nails back 😬 – I have not had any more breaks. 🙌Whether or not the infused vitamin claim is true, who knows.

but if it is legit beneficial to my nails – even better! I will definitely continue to purchase this product, and may even try the builder-in-a-bottle from Orly next. I highly recommend the Body Guard.

The color is amazing. It is like graphite—almost black with a subtle slate shimmer. However, I find this color tricky to work with. It shrank up during the curing process, and it took four thin coats to build up the color.

This left me with a thick manicure that was a bit sheer toward the cuticle and free edge. I definitely think this is a good color for your collection, but I think it will take some practicing to get the right coverage.

I love this product which I bought about 6 or 7 years ago. However, it is not sold in Walmart or Target anymore. I have had to purchase the base and top coats as well as the colors on ebay and Amazon.

I have about 30 colors but the base coat (1) and top coat (2) are hard to find. Why was this product discontinued? You also can’t buy the base coat on this website. What’s the full story here? I also purchased the Miracle Gel product but didn’t like it at all.

I prefer the Salon Gel. Please explain why this product is so hard to purchase.

Love this stuff !!!! I have my nails do e professionally and I noticed the last few times I had my nails done that not only did they really shine like seriously looked like glass 👀 so when I went in for my fill in roughly 2-3 wks later not only did they still look very shiny but I also noticed very little chipping if any.

So I finally asked him what is this fantastic stuff your using and voila this is it it seriously is one of the best topcoats I’ve ever used. Highly recommend for real or artificial nails.

I NEVER have any luck when it comes to polishing my nails. Regardless of what products I use, as soon as I move the color is scraping off. Same went for. After reading reviews, I figured it didn’t hurt to try.

Works great keeps the nail looking good and protects the gel polish. The only issue is I can never find a lot of this brand locally. Sally beauty only has a little selection of their oroducts. I would love to find more of a selection of nail colors in gel for this brand also.

I like how this clear coat after a week still looks great.

i had so many fails with this base coat. even with cleaning around the rim, it still became hard to open at times. it also became very gluppy (goey like) just after a few uses. i wasn’t even able to use a 3rd of the product before the bottle broke and i threw it away.

definitely a waste of money spent.

Hands down my favorite topcoat super shiney . I use this on all my clients nails! A thicker viscosity wouldn’t hurt for jewelry. Super affordable i love getting the massive refill size buying again!

Use this for all my nail sets, Amazing shine for acrylic nails. You can use over gel as well but I prefer this one for acrylic nails more. It doesn’t go dull, high shine you don’t need to wipe with acetone once cured it’s ready to go.

I just used this after buying on sale and I have to say I’m unexpectedly impressed! Seemed to work pretty well, my only complaints are (1) I wish there were more colors. My kit came in Shell we dance and I found it pretty sheer.

I’m hoping they come out with an opaque white, and a nice dark red. (2) After I finished, my nails still feel kind of sticky/ slimy. I washed my hands, and the polish doesn’t seem to be rubbing off exactly, but it almost doesn’t feel fully dry.

I’m not sure what that’s about?? Looking forward to more colors coming out and hopefully figuring out how to fully cure!.

I would not recommend to anyone to buy this nail polish remover. I bought this polish because it the description said it said it was a gel polish remover. Well I covered my nails with cotton soaked with the remover and covered it tightly with foil as directed.

After 15 minutes, none of the polish came loose. not even flakes. So I followed the instructions and kept trying and checking nails every 5 minutes as instructed. Finally after 45 minutes, a very small amount of the gel nail color began to flake off slightly from the bottom of my nails.

After 2 hours of soaking my nails and making very little progress with getting the polish off my nails and layers of my nails being peeled off trying to get the polish off, I finally gave up. I had to make a trip a nail salon just to get a stronger remover to finally get the gel nail polish off.

This is the product my nail tech uses when she puts the topcoat on my gel nails. Sometimes when it’s almost time for me to go back I’ll have a few little chips or snags. I noticed this was the brand she used and I was glad to find it here.

Now I can save a trip to the salon for a touchup and just wait till it’s time for my regular appointment. Highly recommended.

Standard peel off base coats seem to thin for me, and waiting for non-gel anything to dry drives me nuts. A coat of this cures in less than 30 secs for me and stays on my nail until I deliberately peel it off.

My nail beds are strong when I peel the layer off also. This is the only base coat Ill be using from here on out, its perfect.

I don’t always use this but I do notice a much stronger bond between my polish and nails when I do. My nails might eventually lift after two three weeks but when I use this they will just grow out if I don’t remove the color with acetone.

I usually use this with orlys nail builder. Love orly products.

Being relatively tall at 6’2 can be helpful, when reaching for items on high shelves. Unfortunately low door frames, and cots can cause great discomfort. With me height isn’t the main issue, it’s the physical conduct my body has taken in its years.

Genetics is I play too. My back has good days, and others where pain is an issue. Spasms are the worst, and have been incurred mostly in rugged conditions camping. Thank goodness for this Advil ibuprofen.

Taking two of these liquid capsules, definitely helps dissolve faster. That means it gets to the pain receptors in an expedited fashion. This brand for whatever reason seems fastest and most effective.

I am happy to say, this one should be one that you should consider. No side effects other than relief, and it’s not the cheapest, but it’s not the most expensive either. You can find this at plenty of stores as well.

Seriously. “But Bri there are other terrible things going on in the world and THIS gives you anxiety?” Yes, it’s pathetic, but at least I’m self aware. This is what I constantly do, even to this day: I make my nail appointment, get to the salon 30 minutes prior and then proceed to sit in my car for 30 minutes scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram trying to see what color is trending and what would look good on my hands/toes.

I find that this product works best especially for leg pain. In some of my past jobs I was a pharmacy tech and a bank teller where you spent long long hours on your feet this was a literal godsend. It relieves muscular pain perfectly but you do need to take the lowest dose possible because NSAIDs can be very damaging to both your kidneys and your liver.

The dosage is one capsule every 4 to 6 hours and if your pain doesn’t respond to that two capsules can be used. If it still doesn’t work, I would contact your doctor. Each capsule contains 20 mg of potassium which is probably why it helps your leg muscles so much, as leg muscles respond very well to both potassium and magnesium.

I definitely recommend this product.

Ive struggled growing my nails for the longest time because my job is quite hands on, I’m also a nail biter and up until now acrylics have been the only way for me to grow my nails. I started using this builder gel and my nails have never been so strong and long! I can’t recommend this enough.

One thing I will say is that I didn’t realise before using that it wasn’t a no wipe gel. It was an easy fix though using some nail polish remover to wipe away the sticky residue.

I love this gel. My natural nails are weak and bend easily so polish always ends up peeling off. 2 thin coats of this makes my nails hard and strong and has stopped any lifting or peeling completely.

Tip for application – hold hand upside down for a few seconds before curing as it allows the gel to form a better shape and avoids being lumpy at the tip. Cures fast in Mylee lamp.

I’m still getting the hang of using this! But when I do it well, it looks amazing! Would recommend looking at the Mylee Instagram or YouTube pages for how-to videos. Love that Mylee are on ASOS 🙂 I’ve used many brands of gel nail polish for around 9 years, but Mylee is by far my favourite, and I now solely use their products.

With this you can get a thin layer to just strengthen the gel manicure, or a thicker layer/multiple layers to give that ‘acrylic’ look which I personally love.

Does not give the H&M gel nail varnishes any more gel look. Comes out looking like regular polish. I tried 3 layers of the gel look varnish and 2 layers of this top coat and looks just like normal polish.

Dries reasonably fast though. Yet to see how long it lasts.

Really great alternative for gel nail polish that doesn’t damage your nails when removing. This red is a lovely bright colour. The polish is not as thick as gels, and chips more easily, but lasts about a week.

I’d recommend doing 3 coats of red with 2 coats of the top/clear polish for a thicker look and longer lasting wear!.

Was a bit sceptical after the reviews and after my not so good experience with a previous nail polish from here. I’m glad I gave it a try. Lovely colour, simple and chic, lasts me 5 days usually. I am a mother of two with lots of household work so it passed the test!.
