20 Best Baking Apples For Apple Pie (2023 Updated)

This stuff is delicious. I’m only an occasional dieter – maybe once a year for a month or so to keep everything in order, but I now use these whenever I would use normal pie filling. The cherry is delicious and tastes identical to the sugar versions – it has a lovely sweetish tart flavor – if it’s not sweet enough for you add a bit of splenda (or your preferred sweetener) and it’s perfect.

I’ve baked turnovers, pies, put it on cheesecake and waffles, but my most common use is as topping on greek yogurt. Honestly, I’ve eaten it straight from the can 🙂 Super yum! I’m not generally partial to canned apple pie filling (with or without sugar), as most have nutmeg and I can’t stand nutmeg.

But this has no nutmeg (unlike the Lucky’s one sold here) and tastes awesome! I personally prefer to add a bit more cinnamon (but I love a lot of cinnamon in anything that takes cinnamon, like rice pudding) and a bit of liquid splenda or honey, but it’s great on its own too.

I really like it on pancakes, in crepes, with cottage cheese and once again with greek yogurt. Honestly try it and you’ll never buy regular filling again.

This is so good. The apples are well cooked and the flavor is rich. The sweetness is very appealing. Does not seem like it is without sugar. I wish they would carry this product in the Bushnell Walmart.

I bought this filling because we wanted to make mini apple pies using muffin tins. Pros: -Convenient and easy to use -This product is just right for what we needed. It made the process much easier by saving time! – Very happy that this product does not have any corn syrup! Cons: – The taste is not sweet so added a little brown sugar and it was ok.

-Not certified organic nor NON-GMO ! Lots of moms are concerned about this issue. So it would be nice to know if this pie filling is NON-GMO. This is a good product to have on hand for when you are short on time.

It is great that it is not overly sweetened with corn syrup. Will likely purchase this again.

Odd taste, almost artificial. I tasted it before I used it in a pie and thought maybe baking it would change to flavor. It didn’t. Granny Smith and Mac apples have a tart taste, but this was weird. Maybe it was the preservatives used to keep the apples from oxidizing in the processing.

Would not recommend. Cut your own apples.

I really like this brands pie filling. It’s really good and a great price. I made my first Caramel Apple Dump Cake. It was so easy to make and tasted delicious. Added a scoop of vanilla ice cream and it was a hit.

The best lite pie filling yet. Cherries are refreshing and delightful with no significant aftertaste. Not thick not thin just perfect in a ready made pie crust and whipped topping I finished the pie in two days by myself! I’m on a sugar free diet and have lost 40 lbs so far.

This has Splenda so I’m not sure if it’s helpful for our bodies but I haven’t gained any extra weight in two days lol it’s delicious!.

When I saw this I was like AWESOME, cant find rhubarb anywhere. So I ordered it not think I was going to get a can of just strawberry pie filling. When I got the product, NOWHERE does it say RHUBARB in the ingredients.

So I am requesting a refund on a product and Now Walmart just lost more money on a product that was described incorrectly!.

I have never used tinned pie fillings but as a quick Sunday dinner pudding I gave it a go. I bought this one and Asda own tinned apples. Princes had a gelatinous, wall paper paste sauce with very few lumps of what once was apple but no longer looked or tasted of anything but sickly sweet mush.

It’s was awful and the whole crumble went into the bin. Asda tinned apple however. Brilliant, all apple tasted fresh no sloppy nasty glue sauce. Buy Asda’s own.

I find myself agreeing completely with the previous reviewer that this is a ‘retro’ product reminiscent of 1980s/90s cherry-based desserts. Thick sauce, artificial flavour, distinctive aftertaste. Unlike the previous reviewer this is not to my taste – I bought a tin of this to top a cheesecake and had to remove it before anyone in the family was willing to eat it.

If you’re after a realistic, tart, deep black cherry taste then I wouldn’t recommend it but if you’re looking for a slightly more processed product then it’s likely to tick all your boxes.

I wanted that retro experience – and don’t mind that viscosity – but in that memory there was actually some taste of cherry. There is next to none here. A vague watery taste of apple perhaps and it all looks as if it’s been plumped up with water.

Which strangely enough isn’t what I was after. “Remove from favourites”? Don’t mind if I do.

It is perfect the way it is. I have used this in Black Forrest Cake and English Trifle, all to rave reviews here in Italy. Understand we in Italy are very picky, persnickety and spoiled rotten when it comes to food and produce.

My relatives can cook and bake like a hot darn with a couple of them having taken pastry chef courses. So, to have sated and pleased that crowd, you know this is one heck of a great cherry fruit filling.

Rivals anything N. American that I used when living in Canada.

I like this kind way better than the country one. There’s a lot more cinnamon and fruit and a little bit less gel. People have complained about brown apples, well duh, they have been soaking in a lot of cinnamon-delicious!!! And I haven’t found all the pieces of peel and whatever in these cans like the regular ones.

There is no need to look any farther when you are looking for the perfect pie filling! This isn’t overly sugary or jelly tasting. I love the crisp apple taste you get when eating it, especially when compared to other brands that try to put in “natural ingredients” to make it taste like apple.

I couldn’t find regular dry apples on the website so I ordered this type. (Of course, I found out two minutes after clicking my order that the regular type was elsewhere on the website, oh well!) But here’s the thing: true to so many customers’ reviews, Natural Tart Apples is pretty good.

Probably better than regular dry apples! One commenter said it tasted like apple chips. I must disagree. It is only very slightly crispy and more soft. I would definitely order it again!.

This pie filling had a very unusual taste. I used it to make a tart. My husband and I ended up throwing the tart out because of how the filling tasted. We were worried about getting sick.

This was the first time using this product. I made an Apple Spice Cake, using Duncan Hines Spice Cake Mix, added the can of Duncan Hines Caramel Apple Pie filling. I had excellent results. This pie filling is thick and extremely rich and flavorful, and I will definitely buy this again.

I am not a pie lover so cake is my method of using it. Buy it, you won’t regret it.

If you do not want a whole pie, try this. The taste is fabulous! Go Walmart!! The crust is nice and flakey, with a great taste. The filling is wonderful. I simply do not want an entire 9 inch pie, so this is perfect for me.

It allows me to have a piece of pie, without buying something large. I was happily surprised by the taste and quality of this pie. If you had Table Talk pies when you were young, you can use those to gauge the size of this pie.

Please know that I’m super picky and critical if anything is not perfect. The convenience of these apple slices is FABULOUS! To me, peeling apples takes so much time so I loved just emptying a can and dumping them in a bowl to make a pie.

But the taste is just GOOD, not great. I wish I could say they are as tasty as fresh apple slices but they’re not. Good but not great. After baking them, they tasted sort of bland. Also, I like to bake my pies close to an hour to soften up the apples.

I baked the pie with these apples close to an hour but they were still sort of hard when we ate it. Next time, I think I’ll sauté them on my cooktop for a bit to soften them up before adding them to the pie crust and baking.

I’ll probably buy them again because I love the convenience but I wish they tasted more like freshly peeled apples.

I use these canned apples for my family favorite apple cheese casserole. The only local grocery store that carries the Lucky Leaf brand in my area is 20 miles away. Ordering online has been so convenient! These sliced apples are different from pie filling because there’s no added cinnamon or sugar etc.

the casserole is a side dish, not a dessert, and the unsweetened apples are just what I need.

BEWARE BEWARE. APPLES BRUSIED!! But, you already know this because you purchased a bag from our, once, very respected, now, VERY UNRELIABLE “Sam’s Club”. But shame on us for trusting them and buying a bag of, “what we know to be”, very delicious and more expensive than most other apples, from “Sam’s Club”, WHO WE THOUGHT WAS A PLACE we can trust.

Honeycrisp are the preferred variety in my opinion. Price per volume is excessive by a little bit. I’ve tried the other apple varieties offered and they taste like sadness to be honest. So I continue to buy these although I’ve had a percentage of bad bags of apples.

Honeycrisp can be an expensive apple, so I appreciate the decent price. However, Sam’s Clubs need to do better in rotating their stock and checking them occasionally. I’ve gotten bags with mushy apples and got one that had an apple in it that was half covered in mold! Do better Sam’s!.

Cute little pies that you can eat either hot or cold. I’m reading some of these other reviews and I am genuinely flummoxed. Bland filling? What are you eating that you found it to be bland?! I found the fruit filling to be very sweet – it honestly put a kind of smile on my face, because it’s a little tangy too.

I’ve only had these at room temperature so far – I can only imagine how much tastier they might be heated. My mouth is literally watering at the thought of the filling being warm and that much more fragrant.

Great little treat, though probably not something that you want to exaggerate with. I also noted that they’ve got palm oil – hopefully this will eventually be removed from the recipe or sustainable sources will be sought instead sometime soon.

Any time you re trying to risk buying British pastry and expecting to get a bit of sourness in your desert, you just get an extremely sugary and tasteless product. How come? This is extremely annoying, especially to a person from East Europe where we have deserts where fruits&berries have that amazing sour taste which would never be killed by the sugar.

I was disappointed with these pies. Whilst the pastry was lovely and crumbly, i found the pies lacked filling with probably less than a teaspoon of filling in each pie. I felt they were all air! Certainly didnt look like the picture on the packed with chunky apple filling ozzing out.

i bought on promotion, but wouldnt buy on full price based on the lack of filling.

I was so amazed by this product!!! It is delicious with just the right amount of sweet to tartness and lovely cinnamon. I didn’t have to add anything to the filling. It’s not a gelatinous goo. more like ready to use pie apples.

Made an apple pie with this stuff. must have been amazing because my son took it to his room and ate the whole thibg. he loved it so much you can hear him moan as he scarfed it down. He keeps asking me to make it for him.

This is a very good pie filling with great flavor and no added sugar. It is NOT sugar free, but only contains the sugar from the fruit, without added corn syrup or other sweeteners. I would recommend this to anyone that wants to moderate or lower their sugar intake.

I love thia right out of the can! Tonight I used it as a side with pork chops, instead of regular apple sauce. It’s great on coconut ice cream. And of course in a pie. Pieces are a nice size and they have a good firmness about them.

Very good apple pie filling. Add to your taste needs but truth is you can just add to curst and it tastes great that way also. I added a tid bit of sugar and cinnamon with my second pie but my first pie I added nothing and it was fine.

Nobody doesn’t like Sara Lee. Or is it Nobody does it like Sara Lee? Either way, she nailed it for a frozen apple pie. We usually bake a fresh apple pie at thanksgiving, but this past year was a little more hectic so we opted for the frozen one.

I always make my food from scratch but when I dont have the time I reach for this for the after dinner dessert because dinner was made from scratch therefore the reason I didn’t have time to make the pie from scratch!! 😀😀 Anywho I do recommend these as they are great don’t need alot of attention at all just take it out of the freezer set it in the fridge on a tea towel to thaw BAM instant Dessert 😀😉.

I have liked Sarah Lee pies but I dunno about this one. It was bland in flavor, the streusel topping was too sweet, and there were hardly any apples, in this pie. It was mostly bread and filling, no apples.

I got it in sale but I will not purchase this again. Tasted like a convenience store packaged pie. No flavor and sugary. Marie Callenders pie are worth trying.
