I was using the line in on a sound blaster X-Fi plat to record into my DAW from a Mackie mixit 8. This meant the inevitable loss of range and woeful latency, an absolute nightmare for recording vocals.
I also have stereo sound sources that I wanted to record (External synth and VT03). The 2 inputs being able to take the left and right channel for stereo (From the mixer) is great, with the added bonus of midi ports for my synth.
The sound quality and low latency from this device is fantastic, all the synth sounds are coming through bright and clear. Vocals from the VT03 sound as they should with very minor latency that is barely noticeable (At maximum resolution!).
I would definitely recommend this to anyone starting out with computer music – it is the missing piece that completes my home studio and certainly did not disappoint.
the Onyx does just as advertised, simply and at an unbeatable price. Good clean signal from my e. guitar and mic inputs, playback sounds good. Just make sure you check its input/output levels are up in the Audio/MIDI Setup controls (Mac); I didn’t at first and couldn’t get even close to a loud enough output from the Producer, thought it was a bad unit and about to return it when I stumbled upon Audio/MIDI Setup.

I was previously using a Line S**t UX2 since 2011. I can tell you the model name IS NOT the acronym for User Experience. That thing SUX!! The Onyx Producer 2. 2 has the Onyx preamps which, to me, sound great.
I love the independent channel gains and combo jacks. But the BIGGEST selling point, for me, was the Input/DAW blend. I can still hear what I’m tracking against whilst being able to adjust out the latency the track in recording.

Now, keep in mind I am not comparing this to RME, MOTU and UA products, but this interface has been quite solid for very little $. I did have several hiccups where it was dropping sync, thus one star less.
Updating firmware and drivers fixed this but it was phantom issue that crept up. Also had a weird glitching playback while tracking overdubs once, a reboot of the machine fixed that, but it was strange.
Besides these 2 instances of droppage, I haven’t had any issue but solid performance since I bought this about a year ago. It has 8 preamp, that are clean and capture well. They’re not amazing, but clean and nothing fancy.
I am augmenting this with 8 PreSonus XMAX preamps (for a total of 16 inputs combined) and the PreSonus preamps capture a bit more detail and have a touch more “sparkle”. I am recording band rehearsals with this mainly and we have mid to low grade drum mics and are actually capturing a very good sound, sounds well enough to start tracking a full LP that is about to be completed soon.
I am doing overdubs at home with a AXE I/O interface and unless we’re talking vocals and bass, where the AXE I/O has some transformer JFET goodies you can dial in the sound to capture more definition, I can’t say the Tascam interface is inferior in any way.
Very good purchase and just what you need if you want to record a full band. Pick an 8 input mic preamp (used or new, I got a PreSonus FP10 for about $60 used!) and some 1/4 patch cables and you have yourself a 16 channel rig to record a full band.
I have used this unit for about 12 months. It is so hit or miss, I am moving back to my M-Audio for the time being. My old Lexicon Omega performs better than this thing has. Latency, all the time, in every setting.
I Moved from a Quad core Phenom up to a Quad Core A8 (DDR2 800 up to DDR3 1866), then tested on a clean Skylake build with nothing else on it and it is NOT the systems. It performed the same in any Windows system I plugged it into.
The unit will start jittering after several minutes of it working fine, until you switch the latency setting (doesn’t matter which setting), it will then smooth back out for a while, then start jittering again after some time, of course to the point that your buffer is too large and you start getting too much latency and are unable to perform parts in time.
It is almost incapable of streaming audio quality above 44. 1khz with BFD standalone in 64-bit (even with the sample mode bumped down to 16-bit), I plug in my M-audio. works fine. This I attribute to horrible driver support.
The Windows 10 supported drivers were a month behind the release of Windows 10 (glad I had a fallback device, though, there was day one support for the 20X20. ?. ) and were nothing more than horrible ports of the drivers from Windows 7.
Seems like Tascam is more dedicated to the 20X20 or the HD units. There have been 2 other updates to the drivers since then, that have not bettered the performance of the unit, and NO firmware updates whatsoever.
Matter of fact, the latency issues worsened from 1. 02 to 1. 04. IT IS THE ONLY WINDOWS SUPPORTED SUB THREE HUNDRED (ON SALE) AUDIO DEVICE WITH AT LEAST 6 OUTPUTS AND MIDI. ALL OTHER DEVICES HAVE ONLY 4 OUTPUTS, NO MIDI(IF YOU NEED IT), OR COST MORE THAN FOUR HUNDRED FIFTY.
So, looking elsewhere for my surround recording and mixing. Going to sell this one after replacing it with something better.

This unit works well to connect a Pro Sennheiser microphone to your computer. It does use non US standard output plugs which was a surpirse. It includes an output cord to a Lightning plug. However, we cannot get this unit to work with the Comrex Opal which need to be corrected.
Technical support from IK Multimedia is seriously lacking. For the above reasons, I would suggest the Polsen XLR to USB to connect to a pro mike to a computer and the iRig Pre for use with a cell phone.
We have used this for a few months as a church to stream our services. It seems every other week we have an issue where it simply does not want to work. The monitor option has not worked since the second or third week after we bought this.
Plan to return it soon and replace it with something better.

I bought an iPad Pro this fall and after using if for a while wondered how I could use it for recording interviews. I pinged Rode asking if I could use the SC6-L with an adapter to connect two microphones.
They did not recommend it. Before trying it myself I saw the announcement for the AI-Micro. I pre-ordered as soon as it was available. It came much earlier than expected. I love it. I can use it with my iPad and my phone.
All the cables are provided. If you are looking to simplify your interview recording set up, making interviews in remote locations easier that hauling lots of equipment and cables, this is great. Absolultely great.
I’ve tried several microphones with lightening interfaces and USB-c to the iPhone and iPad, but they were all affected by great RF interference/noise. This is the first device I’ve used that is extremely portable/pocketable and delivers what it promised.
The software is perhaps a bit buggy, but it does work well after a bit of fiddling. Love it, Love it with Rode and Sennheiser microphones.

Great interface if you want a portable equipment of good quality. The monitoring possibilities are great, there is the difference with other interfaces of equal quality. If you decide for her, just be careful when you turn off the computer, first turn off your monitors or you will feel how they are beaten.
For whatever reason whenever the ONE interface is plugged in, my protools crashes when I try to activate the input. Its possible that there may be an issue in my own software, but oddly it never happens when any other interface is plugged in.
I love the device and it works, I just wish I could use it without my protools crashing. or at least knew why this is happening.

I bought this expecting to make good recordings, I record guided meditations, but it makes a lot of noise in all the different modes it has to record with condenser microphone. Now Im looking to try with iOS but usb cable is too expensive.
The price I paid for was certainly low but now is gonna be the same as buying a new one that includes this lightning cable. Ive made all the adjustments can be done and still has lot of noise, shame with a recognized trademark.
This is a compact audio interface that’s great for travel, does what it says it does and does it very well. What’s not to like? A couple of things. The price is about $20-30 too expensive, especially for the lack of any real DAW software.
And it needs updating to include a USB-C cable. The lightning cable included is proprietary and expensive if you lose one.
I used this for a periscope recording to an iPhone 6 in a loud public space. I had a professional audio guy mixing the audio from two Lavs and a stick mic (3 sources) to his mixer. Then he fed me a single mono Hop that I plugged into the Mvi via the 3 pin XLR.
The MVi had a volume control which he played with. Then the Thunderbolt cable from the MVi to the iPhone 6 plugged into the bottom of the iPhone and the Audio was great. I could hear the Lavs and Stick Mic perfectly and the MVi was the hero.
It took 10 mins to figure out. It gets power from the thunderbolt. Also the unit was really well made. Solid aluminum. The other great thing was the App. Great simple interface.

I purchased this audio interface because my Samson Q2U USB/XLR microphone, in USB mode, developed a really obnoxious noise floor after I upgraded the PSU and CPU in my desktop. It really started to annoy me so I started looking at audio interfaces.
I looked at Behringer, Steinberg and then remembered about Tascam as I recently got a field recorder from them. The US-1x2HR is smaller than I expected (good), all metal construction and quite literally plug and play.
It’s immediately recognized by Windows 10. It connects with a USB-C to Type A USB 2. 0 cable. It’s entirely bus-powered, no need for external power. I looked through the quick start manual to see where I had to plug things in and thought I was good to go.
And I was. except for two things: gain and power saving. If you don’t install the Tascam driver software (which I did not do initially), the device defaults to mono – not an issue for a mono microphone — but it also defaults to powering off after you put the computer to sleep.
It does not wake up. You need to unplug the USB cable. So if you do not want this to happen to you, install the Tascam control driver. After that I deselected the power save. You can also select stereo mode in the software, but with the mono microphone it will be left channel only, of course, so better to leave on mono.
Now, with the Samson Q2U, the volume was super quiet. At the time, I did not understand what the gain was for – I thought it was the volume for the microphone. Because it felt so quiet, I increased the gain to 95% not realizing I was increasing the sensitivity of the microphone.
So for a dynamic microphone to suddenly pick up vocal sounds 15 feet away through walls was very disconcerting and I thought I had a defective unit. After doing a quick internet research dive, I reduced the gain to 70% and fixed the volume problem by normalizing the audio in the video editor.
At 100% gain, the noise floor is profound (but not noticeable at 95%), and at 70% gain with normalized audio the noise floor appears to be nearly non-existent to my non-audio engineer ears. The direct monitoring function works well and there is no latency there.
I like that there is a separate gain for the headphones which is more convenient than using the Windows volume tool. The unit *does not* come with a 1/4 adapter for the headphone jack. Most studio monitoring headphones have this included though.
I haven’t used the second instrument input so I can’t write anything on that. It comes with a DAW called Cubase SE (download code from Steinberg website) which looks pretty neat as well as some other things that I suppose a musician would get excited about.
Maybe I will get excited about this later. But otherwise this a solid and dependable (after installing the software!) unit that perfectly suits my pretty basic needs.
Excellent interface. Great sound and good build. Upgraded to US20x20 and have great i/o. best preamp sound for money that ive tried. like Mackie but more tranparent. Not jazzed like presonus but not totaly flat.

I was using an audio interface costing roughly 3 times the price of this Tascam unit admittedly with more a lot more i/o. But my old unit was temperamental and it’s companion software buggy & confusing.

The packaging is beautiful; the paper documentation is nonexistent. The online documentation is extremely thorough. If you are a beginner or even if you don’t know the differences between balanced and unbalanced cables, the online material is awesome.
Super simple and to the point while explaining everything you could ever want to know about the unit and some basic sound engineering principles. Build: It has a rugged construction and feel to it in part because its aluminum.
The knobs are plastic but passable. The volume pots are smooth. The rear IO is perfect in terms of the ports available and can be powered by the USB C port. Sound: It sounds great. Fairly quiet preamps with a lot of gain makes for an awesome combo for the price.
I’ll probably never use the Vintage button. The front IO accepts Line level signals only through the TRS part of the jack and automatically switches to it. Complaints: IT DOES NOT SHIP with a USB C to USB C cable 🙁 Only a USB A to USB C.
With most computers now having USB C, this is frustrating. It does also come with a USB A to 5v barrel connector to power it as well. Conclusion: I love the build quality, sound it produces, and simplistic design.
I don’t like that it does not come with a modern USB C cable.
I used the Universal Audio volt 2 usb audio interface with Presonus studio one professional 5 windows 10. This UA volt 2 interface is unbelievable. I downloaded the UA connect app and it setup everything perfectly.
I open Presonus Studio one and try to play my midi keyboard as fast as I can and I got to say I didn’t hear no latency. Guest what smile on my face. Don’t laugh but I didn’t sleep that night , just making music beats all night.
O forget to tell you when I purchased it online. I check the reviews and compared the UA Volt 2 with a lot of Audio interface. What I read was not pleasing. Decisions upon decision in my mind. Should I take my money back or buy another Audio interface.

I bought it in 2016 to record my band. Have tried recording as live all-at-once and in studio, instrument by instrument. Have achieved some pretty professional sounding results. It Has some impressive features for the price point.
For example: Auto Sens saves you so much time getting your input fader volumes exactly right. And it has a zero latency monitor mixer, so you can send different monitor mixes to each band member, helpful in a live recording situation.
Preamps are okay. Unit functionality is simple and intuitive. Highly recommend!.
The biggest disappointment in this device is the software provided. This is my first I/O device and I specifically purchased it because it boasted being able to record up to 8 simultaneous analog inputs.
I wanted to be able to record my drummer out of the box. You will NOT be able to record more than 4 analog inputs simultaneously out of the box unless you have “DAW” software that doesn’t have a limitation.
The software that it came with – Ableton Live Lite. Out of the box the Ableton software has a 4 input restriction/limitation that is artificially placed on the product. So now I have to purchase the “full” version of the software to use the hardware the way it was intended.
If you already have DAW software that has no limitation then this device will work awesome for you out of the box. The device is awesome and I have only one complaint regarding the hardware. The knobs wobble and are just a bit small.
If you have big fingers you may find it hard to change the settings on the unit itself. Fortunately there is a version of the controls on the computer and this will give you all the control without having to touch the device itself.
My maudio mobile pre has always been limiting with only 2 inputs, however what pushed me to a new interface was that maudio stopped making drivers for the interface and it became incompatible with El Capitan.
I really wanted something portable but with more inputs, the 8 analog inputs for the Octacapture is a great start. One of the things that really convinced me to buy this interface is it’s ability to be used stand alone.
You can disconnect it from your computer and use it with stand alone compression, reverb, panning and levels. This is great for someone trying to do some small live performances that might have to exclude a laptop.

First off: the sound quality is excellent. I have great confidence in Zoom from my experience with their H4 and H5. I really just needed a DI/mic interface for mobile laptop consults/presentations: The U44 seems to offer so much more versatility and connectivity than other compact or mobile device options.
The U44 has become one of my essential swiss army knife like devices along with the cable tester and multi-meter. < p>The audio quality is excellent: Real world test: neutral and clean results from DI and both dynamic and condenser mics at the end of 25ft cables.
For mics: noise floor was -70db at 8 on the gain knob, -65db at 9 and -55db at 10 (maxed) and this noise included the contribution of the cable, the mic and the room. The actual mic gain needed to the DAW (for the standard -18dbfs = 0db on a VU meter) for soft spoken word was about 8, singing or an acoustic guitar 5-6.
Guitar amp = 3. So, the background and ambient noise of the location will be the issue: not the s/n of the U44. < p>Reliable USB Interfacing with the Macbook and DAW. SPDIF, midi and monitoring options all work as they should.
Its also very useful to be able to power from USB, 5v adapter or AA. Build quality seems good: Its like other Zoom Handy devices, which hold up well. Its not a stompbox, so it may not survive serious abuse: but neither will my boutique gear.
< p>I’m really pleased with it for location work, and as a DI for the guitar into the laptop. In a nutshell, it sounds like whatever you put into it. Seriously: Rout a tube mic into the line in some time and have some fun.
ZOOM U44 When Zoom announced this weird gooney bird of an interface, my first reaction was ‘Who’s going to want this?’ Apparently, me. In an effort to minimize my various gear into one overall cohesive unit, I’ve found that the U44 is sort of a Swiss Army Knife interface capable of most scenarios I throw at it.
As an iOS musician, the fact I can power the interface and the iPad with the newer version camera connector is absolute gold. I should add, I bought three accessories (XLR attachment, stereo mic capsule, extension cord) to basically round out all my requirements.
As an interface, I connect a keyboard with its MIDI connections and any mics. As a performance device, my guitar into it utilizing the iPad as my tone generator and using the blend knob to dial out latency.
And finally, when recording bands, I attach the stereo mic to the extension cable and take a feed from the board as well. All from the same battery operated unit into my iOS device. For video, I take the RCA out to the camera as video apps would only recognize the first two tracks only via the USB, and the stereo mic is on 3/4.
But an analog RCA out would capture all inputs, you just have to be aware of the mix. I wish the unit had a threaded camera mount adapter on the bottom so I could mount it much like a H5 or H6 but it’s a minor quibble.
As of this writing, the accessory to mount to the side of a mic stand is not available. The knobs have a smooth light resistance feel which doesn’t feel cheap (unlike say the iQ7 knob). The preamps are quiet (enough) for my applications, but don’t expect some totally high-end dead-quiet inputs.
But it’s nothing bad by any stretch. You get what you pay for. In other words, totally acceptable. I’m still getting used to the interface. It’s nice to know that any new ideas I have don’t require me running out to the local music store for another piece of outboard gear, but more about how to configure the U-44 with what I already use.
