20 Best 2 Way Radio For Mountains (2022 Updated)

GTX1000X3VP4 GMRS radios. First time to use mobile radios. Bought them because even if the range was only half the stated value (36 miles) it would be good enough. Got the FCC license and made sure the radio’s settings were correct to TX using Hi power.

Testing in a rural area, in the open, no high buildings, good weather & line of sight without forests the maximum range was a bit over 2 miles. This was disappointing. I was hoping that with the advertised 5 Watts of power I would get at least a 5-mile range.

Only one DC charger is offered with the 3-pack unit, I wish there had been one per radio so you could charge them all individually as you are driving. Within the limited range area, the radios work well, easy to set & use.

Did not use them long enough to test battery life. My first priority for buying these radios was usable range. These radios did not meet my expectations.

Review questions are skewed for advertisers. Hey, want a goid radio that performs. It might require you to use your brain and educate yourself a bit. I’m sick of plug and play mentality dictating wheather a product is good or not.

Try. doesnt break unless your a complete idiot that expects all products are indestructible. Want good range? Do you know anything about line of sight, terrestrial interference, sunspot communication interference? Hey.

Radio is well built, outputs well, good audio performance, very adaptable for alternative power sources, look can get it a little wet and it won’t turn to junk. Yeah you shouldn’t drop it in a lake and expect it to be waterproof like a Rolex sub mariner.

For the money? Heck yes. I’d buy a dozen of these if i needed to. One cell phone at $1200 that can’t survive 1 3ft drop or a rainshower? Oh and you need a network that works everywhere even if a power grid is down? Ha.

Buy these and read the manual and learn.

This is my first Midland radio and am impressed with the build quality and features. I am also impressed with the range and sound quality of this unit. What I am disappointed with is the battery charging.

The initial charge is 24 hours, then 12 hours after. Charging is also a little odd as there is no battery charge indicator, or actually nothing showing the state of the charge. It would very useful if Midland made a separate charger for their rechargeable batteries so spare charged batteries could easily be kept on hand.

I bought 4 of these at the same time. ALL radios have less than 4 hours use- TOTAL power on time. All battery packs have been replaced within the last two months because of their natural life cycle. They suddenly locked up for no reason.

All packs have been charged appropriately, and all settings have retained themselves without pack batteries installed, making me believe the onboard memory batteries are still ok. Given the fact that all four of these locked up within a month of each other- if not on the exact same date and time- I believe this to be a planned obsolescence feature built in to the radios themselves.

I have tried all available low level troubleshooting I found online. Outside of this issue, menu navigation is painful, the open key has a miserably long swell time before transmit, making it difficult to hand these off to a novice user.

They get frustrated and despite repeated reminders, tend to start talking before the 1-1 5 second delay in transmit, making the whole usability far worse than expected. A well oriented hunting or other group may not have this issue, but be aware that there is some learning that should take place.

The included earpieces are next to worthless. A specially bought, better made earpiece or headset works FAR better, especially in VOX mode, which is all but unusable with the stock earpieces. The radios themselves are of appropriate levels of value for the price, at least until this lockup tool place.

Given that the most used unit may have transmitted less than 20 short messages and been powered on for something on the order of four hours total- and that they have been kept dry, 99. 5% of the time used indoors.

this issue is supremely irritating, disappointing, and, it rendered these unusable, completely unacceptable and worthy of sourcing from another company. I am ticked right now.

I read many reviews. I was aware range is an issue. I have been operating the radios in the FRS mode. Obstacles like walls and buildings absolutely reduce range. When I am using the radios at distances to a mile with few obstructions the sound is clear.

So far I have not exceeded a mile. My range in a car talking to my wife in a house is reduced to 1/2 a mile at best which is not bad (IMO). Knowing this should help you understand that the range numbers are all inflated and you shouldn’t expect results close to the stated maximums.

I bought the radios because my wife and I are moving to a remote area with very limited cell service. I intend to stick to FRS unless I require the extra power of GMRS. The $70 license fee for 10 years does not bother me.

The radios are a great value, home charger, car charger, ear phones for much quieter operation, and the options for customizing sounds, vibration and privacy are vast. Both Midland and B&H were quick to respond to my few questions.

Again, no complaints.

I’m no radio expert but these fit my need perfectly. My son and I ride touring motorcycles and were looking for good communications that were practical. The expensive bluetooth units can be buggy and not always pair with other riders.

These won’t pair with them either but if everyone used a GMRS radio then motorcycle coms would be much easier. Initial test range was 2. 8 miles on high setting before it got too hard to understand. We don’t plan to ever be that far apart while riding.

They were paired with the AVPH2 helmet headsets, bought separately. We have full face helmets. I only wish they were rechargeable with a usb port. Space is limited on motorcycles. We can also use these radios for coms on family caravans.

Not too bad. Definitely not a 20 mile range. However, I was able to speak chat a few miles out in an area full of hills and trees. I’m actually pretty impressed by that. For the cost, it’s a good deal.

The battery life seems pretty good so far. Range is reasonable. I like that they have the NOAA setting on them. The seem pretty durable as well. Overall, a good purchase. Very lightweight for a bug out bag or just to carry.

Signal remains very clear until out of range. No choppiness like some other brands. Recommended. I actually bought 4 just in case. These may come il be pretty useful down the road for anyone. Shipping was pretty quick and easy.

Advertised to have a 35 mile range, you must understand that this is quite optimistic. It might be true from the top of a mountain to the flatlands, but any intervening structure will seriously degrade the useful range.

Across suburban terrain which is quite flat but heavily forested and clustered with homes and electrical lines, we find the effective range to be about a mile. Nice units for use in closer quarters, but not 35 miles.

Well made and have a quality feel. If you are over 60, get a magnifying glass to read the instructions!.

These radios are perfect. We live in a rural area where the local electric co-op is not very reliable. Wind, rain or snow, we always seem to have a power outage of some type. The radios have a AM/FM radio so you don’t have to sit in silence, a NOAA weather rasdio to check on the outside storm and of course, the 2 way radio in case I go outside and can talk to ther hopuse.

My wife is disabled and I take the radios out when I mow my 10 acres so she can contact me if anything is going on inside. Could be a lifesaver. I recommend these radios to anyone.

I bought these package due to its profile and as a fan of GXT1050. I had 6 total. 2 were dead after 10 yrs of normal uses. It works better than my Garmin Rino 650t. Mostly hiking and hunting. Some road trips in the mix.

These new units suck and waste of money. It cost almost the same. Same hunting spot, these unit was hard to hear with all the static. I cannot even read what my partner say while the GXT1050 has no issue on their other trips.

My Rhino 655t preform better than this. Wish I can return and exchange. I cant believe all the 4 & 5 stars. Probably city and road. Not recommended for hunting in your normal deer hunting ground.

Bought this for our small business because our regular radios were also being intercepted by unknown chatter from everyone else. We have been using the Midland Radio FRS Business Radio Bundle for a little over 2 weeks now and so far on semi-private, it has been wonderful.

We haven’t had any interference, no one talking back to us like we are talking to them, and we all feel so much safer and more private. Bundle was easy to charge, program and use. The dual chargers (we got 4 for the 8 radios) works great because there are two of us in each location too.

We are in the city with lots of buildings and trees. I was looking for something to have a little better range than 1 block. I’m not in the dessert seeking 26 miles, but this does give better range in the city than I’ve found with other sets.

The weather radio is a nice added feature.

Bought these radios for use during hurricanes. Thankfully never needed to use them for such an event. However, they have been sitting in my office waiting on standby just in case the need for them ever arrives.

After 5 years of sitting in the same place one unit has died. It’s not the battery pack that has failed as I have pulled the pack out of the failed unit and it powers up the other working one. Cheap enough that if you break gear often or need to use it in bad weather that it’s not a big deal if they die, but if you’re keeping them on standby for use in an emergency just know that they may randomly stop working for no apparent reason.

Checked them once a week to make sure they were topped up or turned on, today one failed my check. It’s now two years past the warranty date so just more eWaste to dispose of. Kinda defeats the purpose of having them for an emergency.

I will not be purchasing this radio again but I’ll probably try other Midland products.

I have a contentious relationship with writting reviews online. After all, everyone is on a different learning curve when it comes to figureing out how technology works. But my God this product is bad.

“Taliban bad. ” Thats how bad this product is. Charged it 2 days straight to use it on the road. Only for the battery to die on us soon as we got on the road. Reason why I purchased this product was to avoid using a cellphone while driving.

At least in my thought process, i speculated that i can hide this product while driving by just using the Push To Talk function. i ended up using my cellphone and a blue tooth device to communicate with my wife.

Which in the end, cost me nothing. Now i have a product I don’t need and a product I can’t return because i discarded the box which came with it and finding a receipt when you are moving from one state to another state, is beyond human abilities.

I will neither encouraged nor discouraged anyone who is interested in purchasing this product from going ahead and dispensing off with their hard earned money. Anyone reading this review is, “at least I hope” grown enough to make their own descions on whether they want to go ahead and purchase this item.

I bought these radios after getting separated from a companion in an area of shoddy mobile coverage. Since buying these, we’ve used them every day we go skiing. As others have said, they’re good for line-of-sight communication for the distance between the top and bottom of the mountain which corresponds to about a mile.

I’ve also found that they will still work if trees are obscuring the line of sight, however they won’t do any good if there’s a rise of land between you. This is pretty consistent across all FRS radios that I’ve used.

As far as these models, my favorite quality is probably their size: I can zip it into a breast pocket on my fleece with just a bit of antenna sticking out and kids can zip it into their pants pocket without any parts exposed.

My least favorite thing about these is that the battery level indicator is wildly innacurate: It might show 3 bars (full) of battery in the morning but an hour later you’ll be getting the low battery warning alert.

By comparison, I also use a Motorola T260 and a BCA BC Link radio. While my favorite is the BC Link, this one’s probably most reliable for all.

Excellent radio and love the more compact size but they are marketed as an “Outfitter” radio. The problem is the ONLY way to charge them is with an AC charger which means you need to plug them into a wall unless you have an inverter in your vehicle.

If you plan on being in the backcountry using them as marketed as an Outfitter you get about a days use then you are out of luck unless you purchase several extra battery packs and change them out and charge them individually before you leave (a ridiculous expectation).

When I called Midland they just said sorry. I purchased two sets for packing trips into the backcountry and they just stay at home for use on other trips where I have the ability to charge them at night.

I purchased a 3rd set (T71VP3) the T77 value pack which charges with a USB/Micro USB cable which allows me to charge them using a portable battery pack. Used the T71’s in the Book Cliff wilderness 30 miles in from any roads/service.

Easily charged them each night and had excellent reception. I can highly recommend the T295/T299 if you just have a day use application and can charge them at night. If not, the T71’s are an outstanding alternative.

Midland needs to develop other charging options for these radios to meet the marketing they are doing as an Outfitter radio – it is VERY misleading and resulted in me having to purchase more radios. One other recommendation for Midland is to make these waterproof.

In the Book Cliffs we were snowed on each day for 4 days and had to take extra precaution to keep them out of the rain which was inconvenient to keep them in a waterproof pocket and yet compunction regularly or hear incoming communications.

I like this radio a lot. I have the following radios: t290, gxt1000, and the micro mobile 15watt. All connect to each other flawlessly. Exceptional clarity. I use these for property management operations in a small town.

The gxt1000 have noticeably better performance. I can get good radio signal through urban environment and trees for about ~2 miles. With the T290’s I can only get good clarity for about 1 mile in urban setting with trees.

Ive switch my entire crew to gxt1000 handhelds and installed the 15watt micromobile stations in the vehicles and loaders. I would recommend the t290 for off-roading, camping, recreational activities, short range communication.

I would recommend the gxt1000 for more serious operations, 2 mile range in high obstruction, and maybe 5 miles unobstructed.

I purchased this set in advance of buying a mobile unit for my Jeep. The Jeep club I am in is interested in moving everyone towards GMRS and we wanted to compare the features and range to our traditional CB’s.

Many of our members are new to off-road and finding something simple that everyone could use was a priority. Our first outing was a simple trail ride (actually more of a spring color tour) that consisted of 60 Jeeps.

We positioned the hand helds at the front and rear of the caravan. As you can imagine 60 jeeps gets spread out quite a bit. The T290’s far out performed the CB’s in both range and clarity. It was a very good example that helped us sell the idea to club members and many have already committed or made purchases from Midland.

The only real drawback I experienced is that you are not supposed to leave the radios on the charging base. It would be nice to be able to leave them on a ‘maintain’ setting. PROS: compact design, pretty easy to use, very good clarity of signal, good ‘feel’ (doesn’t feel cheap), nice range for a hand held device CONS: charger does not maintain the battery, can’t use any other battery source (AA’s) other than the rechargeable that comes with it, menu and displays can be hard to understand if you are not familiar with terminology Overall I am very pleased with my purchase.

I have ordered the MXT275 to mount in my JL Wrangler and I think these T290’s will make a great addition on the trail for spotting or just to loan out to those without a GMRS.

I have recently tried it from inside my house which has a metal roof that makes reception hard for cell phones. Worked great from my house to where my wife works which is a bit over 20 miles away. I used it on a two car trip and it works great going down the road to keep in touch with the other vehicle.

Plan on using them for hunting hogs this year also. I would and most likely will purchase another set of these radios for the other members of our hunting party.

I ordered these radios for a car trip through the mountains in British Columbia. They worked very well, the range was as expected, and the batteries lasted the entire day of listening as I did very little talking on them.

I am not impressed with the headset included with this radio. It is designed for you to hold it with your hand over your ear which makes it completely useless.

I really like how small these guys are and the fact that you can use regular rechargeable batteries in them. We did have one battery pack that wouldn’t hold a charge right out of the box, which was unfortunate.

Charged it several times after it died but it wouldn’t last more than a few brief conversations (less than two minutes of actual talk time) before it died again, and that was right after it was taken off the charger.

The display showed that it was fully charged before we took it off the charger and used it. Got about a mile’s range inside city limits surrounded by buildings, which isn’t bad. Haven’t tried them out in the woods yet.

I’ve never been much of a walkie talkie person, but recently while camping in an area with no service what so ever, we encountered some dangerous weather (a tornado) that went through near our campground.

With no way to get reliable updates and no way to contact each other, walkie talkies seemed like a good idea. I chose these because of the weather alert and weather scan technology. Although we luckily did not get the chance to use the weather alert function, it is comforting to have this option if we were ever to go through bad weather again while camping.

The product itself is really nice! I like that it came with the batteries for operation. The stand for charging is small and convenient to place anywhere while they’re charging! If you don’t have the space to use the charger, there is a USB cord that can be used to charge them as well which is convenient for charging t in the car in between hikes.

As for using them, I enjoyed the clear quality of the audio. We used them on a hike in which we hiked opposite ways (about 5 miles each, so a total of 10 miles apart) and the reception was still clear, although it was spotty depending on what the area was like.

For example, if very wooded the reception was a little spotty. They are very user friendly, as I have never used one before but it came naturally to me. The user manual is available on Midland’s product page, which was very helpful since this is all new to me.

The battery life lasts an entire hike for us, which is what we wanted, and this would be about 4 hours on average. We have not tried to use them longer than this. Overall, I really enjoyed using this and found them to be of great quality.

We will continue to use these on our hikes and other outdoor adventures!.

This set of radios were ready to use straight out of the package. The desktop charger is compact so it does not take up a ton of room. It plugs in easily and 2 radios just set in very easily. The 3rd radio can be plugged in using the micro usb charging cord.

The radios also came with belt clips and rechargeable batteries. The belt clips have proven to be sturdy however, they are removable if you don’t need it. My son and I use these radios to communicate on our 6 acre property.

We can always here each other and don’t experience any interference. We cannot back up the claim that the radios have a 32 mile range however. I got in my car and drove away and got about 2 miles down the road and we lost radio contact all together.

Maybe there is something I am not doing to reach that range? Overall, I love these radios and have already recommended them to a friend who also has several acres of land. The battery life seems really good.

We left these off charger (not using) to see how long they would hold a charge and they lasted about 1 week. With continual use, it’s several hours. The rechargeable batteries can be removed and 3-aaa batteries can be used instead if 3 or more hours are needed for communication.

I have only received one weather alert as it’s been pretty mild (weather wise) since I bought these. It was somewhat spotty reception for the weather alert but overall could be very useful if I were out camping in an area without cell service (which happens a lot).

The quality of this radio seems to be really good. It feels very well put together and rugged. When considering purchasing a set of radios that work well, have good reception and range and are rugged enough to go camping with and for everyday use, I would purchase these again.

Having solid communication with my kids while on our property or in the woods is very important and cell phones just aren’t reliable like a good set of 2-way radios. The push to talk feature is easy to use and the rubber coating feels thick and durable.

I have several of these radios, all have been dependable , and simple to use for family members that are not around radios often. However the fact that they will Not store more than one repeater with a tone on each of the 8 repeater pairs, or allow nameing each of thise repeaters is not good! If you travel you cannot simply change to another saved repeater in the area you are going to, without stopping, and physically deleting tones you have already saved for one area, then adding the new tones for the area you are going into.

A PITA ! That said, If you only want a basic GMRS radio, that will cover 8 repeaters programmed for immediate use without changing yout set tones, and a radio that is very good on simplex. This IS my choice ( I now own 2 Wouxun KG- 1000G radios!!!!!!! These are in our vehicles that we use when travelling , you can have lots of preprogrammed( and Named ) repeaters.

The MXT400 Bundle came well packaged and intact. Shipping was quick and efficient. I was pleased with the products when I opened the package regarding their heartiness and quality feel. Unfortunately, a few days after receiving the MXT400, the MXT500 became available, so I ordered the MXT500 and returned the MXT400.

I preferred the IP rating and dust proof aspects, and felt the additional cost for those items along with the additional 10W of power were well worth the extra cost. I anticipate good things from this setup once completely installed.

Bought the Midland Micro Mobile GMRS 2-way radio MTX400 in late August to set up as a base station in my home. After all other components purchased and installed, the unit became operational in early November.

Had to replace a protected breaker with a regular breaker. Worked great for about 2 weeks then noticed I wasn’t receiving any transmissions. A quick test revealed the internal speaker no longer works.

Several friends purchased this same unit and have had no issues.

I wanted a pair of walkie talkies that I could use around the house and with the grand kids as well. I chose Midland because I was very satisfied with my HH54 weather radio, which I’ve had for about 6 years.

I found that like the weather radio, the walkie talkies work very well with the permanently attached smaller antennas. (Type accepted) Right out of the box I noticed how well the T71’s received other stations in the local area that I had previously heard on my Alinco handheld.

There was no “intermod” interference on any channels. I tried them with my wife and they went through the high rise & out over a mile or so, with audio that was loud & clear on low power channel 8. Note that on channels 8 – 14 there seems to be less interference from more powerful stations in the area due to the mandatory low power settings.

The 1 amp rechargeable batteries are a plus. If you need more power you’ve got 2 watts that you didn’t have under the old FRS rules. High power channels are 1-7 and 15-22 but you may be sharing with GMRS stations in your area.

In that case you can use the private codes that are available with this series. I did turn off the “roger beep” and BP key tones because they were annoying. The weather radio feature can come in handy to get the latest up to the moment info from NOAA weather.

The weather radio alerts & warnings are better than the emergency alerts you get on the cell phone, in my opinion. The radio does not however, support the use of S. A. M. E or County codes, so you will have to listen carefully to the information from NOAA to see if it actually applies to your local area or not because NOAA weather radio is a region wide broadcast.

One thing the instruction book didn’t cover or I didn’t notice were the extra channels, 23-36. These are just repeats from the original 22 with a simplification of the quiet codes. Also, these radios cannot access any repeaters that you will hear on some of the upper channels.

And now on to Customer Service. There was a battery issue. One of the packs would go dead prematurely so I contacted Midland and replacement batteries are on the way. All in all a good value for the money and no license is required: Also there is no “skip” interference on UHF like the kind you get on CB radio plus the FM modulation is clean and quiet.

I can honestly tell you that these radios will get a lot of use in our family. Dan.

Don’t buy these to use with a GMRS repeater. These are decent radios if you want just a quick fix for something at the house or on the farm but if you plan on going hiking with these anywhere near a GMRS repeater they will not work.

I was hoping that the additional channels were used for repeater offsets but I was wrong. They’re simply standard channels with privacy code offsets. Seeing how you can set privacy codes on every other channel it seems sort of pointless to do this unless you want to make it seem like there are actually more channels than what’s actually available.

FRS radios operate on 22 different, standard frequencies, GMRS operates on 8 additional frequencies for repeater purposes as well as allowing you to transmit at higher powers with the propper FCC license.

While the packaging and labeling say “GMRS” it is misleading because you’re only functioning on FRS. If you go out and buy a second set of GMRS radios that aren’t midland’s preset channels you’re going to have a bad time and these will only be able to communicate with them in simplex on the first 22 channels.

We bought these walkie talkies in 2021 and used them everyday on our farm until this winter 2022. My husband lost his walkie talkie somewhere on our property in the beginning of our winter as we had a huge snow storm.

We had been trying to find another one but didn’t have any luck as we are in Canada. Our snow has been melting these last 2 weeks and my husband found our missing walking talkie. I didn’t think it would be any good as it was out all winter long with temps in the -30’s C.

After we dried the walking talkie and charged it up. It still works great. We couldn’t believe it. What an awesome product. Thank you for making a great product that lasts.

These radios work great for two vehicles traveling on busy roads. They are quite easy to handle “one handed”, which makes them usable by drivers. Also, we found them very good while hunting. They can be turned down very low and still used without alerting animals to your location.

Oh Yeah! They came with batteries too. I got to use them right away, even though I always forget to buy batteries when I shop.

We used these on a road trip when taking two cars. I’d say the distance is maybe 1/2 or 3/4 mile maximum if unobstructed. They are fine for that short range or for the kids to play with. But don’t trust them for the advertised range.

We left them on and they chew through batteries, but that was more how we were using them, not a flaw in the product.

When AA batteries are new, transmission is like having the receiver standing right next to you. This quickly discharges the batteries, like in one morning of hunting. This thing eats batteries like a tyranasaures rex eats goats.

Looking into buying some Ni-MH high amp hour batteries and a charger. This is going to be more expensive than what I paid for a pair of refurbished GXT1050 radios. Previously Used GXT 650 radios these were not as clear or able to reach out and touch someone.

AA batteries in these lasted several days. I would recommend either one of these depending on the transmitted distance required and the topography.

I have 1 older pair of these radios and purchased a 2nd pair because of their usefulness. My wife’s 95 y/o father has 1 pair so he can always have 1 with him and his walker and the other in the charger at all times in the in-laws quarters.

Of the new pair, 1 is in the main house and the other is in my workshop. They work great on our 6. 3 acres. Be aware: 1) the OE battery packs typically need to be replaced about every 2-3 years. I tried aftermarket Li batteries but went back to the OE packs.

2) for longer distance at higher power, you may need to use the GMRS channels which require an FCC license. Otherwise, the FRS channels work well but at reduced range, no license required.

I have used these Midland GTX1000 series GMRS radios for many years. They are good small, lightweight radios with better than average range (although not close to the advertised range). I really like the NOAA weather band.

These radios have VERY clear reception. They are easy to use if you read the enclosed instructions. The only complaint that I have is how long they last; after two or three hunting seasons, most often they fail to transmit.

They still receive, but cannot transmit. Then it is time to discard the radio and order another. However, still a very good radio for the money.

I have been super impressed with the clarity and range of the radios. When I received them, I unboxed them immediately and threw them on the charger. I was happy that I was able to charge both of the radios at the same time.

Alternatively, I could have put in AAA batteries, but I would rather use the rechargeable ones that it comes with. After the charge, I wanted to give them a test. I sent one of my kids on their scooter to the local school (about 2 miles in distance) and could mostly hear him with clarity when on a hi power setting.

This was in a city where there are no tall buildings, but there are still cell towers and other things that could disrupt the signal. A couple of my other kids were using the X-TALKER T20X4, but only got about.

5 mile before their voices were a bit crackly coming through. The product is well made and seems to be very durable. The battery charge has lasted for quite a bit of time. My kids have been using them to play across the neighborhood and we haven’t had to charge them yet.

The belt buckle is convenient to have so you don’t have to carry in your hand and I like that you don’t have to remove it for charging. Pros: – Easy to use – Instructions don’t require an advanced degree in linguistics – Durable – Great Range – Great voice clarity – Hi/Lo range Cons: – No Light up Display / not backlit for night time – Would like to have sub channels like some other devices I have used have.

Great radios. Just took these to New Hampshire on a ski trip. We had a lot of fun in the slopes. They work great. We are grateful to have bought them, while driving through Bretton Woods and the white mountains we didn’t have phone signal.

These worked great car to car. Awesome purchase, thought it would be for the kids, but we (the grown ups) have a great time. THey work as expected.

My kids have been having a blast with these. Surprisingly, they have not fought over who gets what color, but maybe that will happen later. I have 4 kids so this pack was perfect and my wife and I can use the LXT500VP3 with them.

The radios are great for beginners like kids that don’t need any advanced features. When we received the radios, we added the AAA batteries needed and off they went. They have been pretty durable so far and I expect to get a lot of use out of them.

The range is pretty decent. I can send my kids to their friends house or the school and have clear communication no problem. We are avid campers that love to spend time at the lake. These allow us to send the kids to the lake to fish when they want while we cleanup or take a nap in the chair or hammock.

We can communicate with them very easily. The belt buckle makes it super convenient to have ready especially if they are fishing. The only downside is that I wish they had rechargeable batteries so I may need to get some just for these.

Unfortunately, there is a battery that does not charge well. I put all four batteries to charge. Three of them charged in more or less 8 hours. Unfortunately, the fourth does not seem to charge. I put it back on charge this morning and it has been on the charger for 3 hours now, but the charge has not been completed.

Is it possible to fix this problem? Thank you for your collaboration. Colette Rodier.

The range isn’t the best, but the size of the unit according to how they’re being used is wonderful. I didn’t need a huge ugly cheap unit with a large antenna. I needed one that was durable, lightweight and as portable as possible.

The sound is good, the signal is OK for what it is, backlit display is very nice in the dark of course. The controls are something to get used to but if you can read and comprehend simple instructions, it shouldn’t be difficult.

We like the Midland LXT118 for their small size. We also purchased the optional ear buds and the radios are used primarily when we ride mopeds on wooded trails to communicate with each other. Over flat terrain the range is quite good.

But with hills, trees, houses, and obstacles the range is less. But for riding the mopeds where are you are not that far from the other riders they are simply terrific. They also are handy on vacations when hiking trails, biking, or communicating with other vehicles in the “wagon train.

” Exceptionally useful for communicating when cell phone coverage is just too expensive when out of the USA.

Longer lasting batteries. I am going to try to buy rechargables I need to have it on all night long so I can be able to answer when my apartment friend who is 92 needs to reach me in an emergency without having to dial my phone number.

We had hoped we could just use the 2-way radios to do that. But the first night we used it batteries went low and started making noise and that upset her. Might be fine for other applications but this is not what I needed.

I got these radios less than a month ago and I already don’t think I could survive without them. Our use the magnitude of tasks colluding yardwork, pest control service at neighboring farms that I do, contract work, or anywhere else that I need to communicate with someone else quickly and easily.

It’s a lot simpler than pulling out your cell phone to send a text or make a call. So far, the range seems phenomenal. I haven’t had any static or broken up calls. I love the wide range of frequencies that you can in conjunction with security codes gives you hundreds of combinations.

They are very rugged, they are water in dustproof with an IP 67 rating, and overall very simple I’m not complicated at all to use. I can use them all day without having to recharge, although recharging them is very simple.

You can use either the included charging dock, or you can plug them in to a standard android USB cable. The batteries are removable three screws If you would rather carry spare batteries with you. The only flaw if any that I see with him is in the holster.

It feels very light duty and I’m sure it will break very easily. The charging base is very slick and attractive and works in any room of the house. I have mine in the kitchen because it’s closest to the door that I use when I go out to work.

I can see using these this summer when I go to concerts, Fairs or amusement parks, Going fishing hunting camping on the personal side of the usage. I also can see Continuing to use them professionally on all my worksite.

I plan to buy a few more sets so there is enough for everyone on the job site. If you are looking for a good quality 2 way radio look no further. So far, they are very rugged and have no signs of wear or tear on them.

They are rated for going through 25 floors on your work site or a range of 300,000 ft. ². They are now a mandatory part of my work kit for every job site I go to. Light and easy to use what more can you ask for?.

We got this model walkie-talkie because of the large push-to-talk button. Although the button is located on the face of the walkie-talkie it’s not too hard to use. In the short amount of time we’ve used it my wife and I are happy with it’s overall size, quality of feel, and the increase range because of the 2 watts of power.

The speaker is loud enough and pretty clear so we can better understand each other as compared to our previous less expensive walkie-talkies.

DXFRS800 work well with a clear sound when close. Obstructions (line of site), glass, tinted windows in vehicles cut the signal. I have owned many of these family / work type close range walkie-talkies, these seem to work as well as the better ones I have used.

They come with batteries and a double charger. 1 watt power per radio (not 2W). I have purchased a 2nd set as these will meet basic short range ( ski resort) needs. Camping, rafting, and basic activities are fine.

These are not for life saving emergency service. Get a Ham. Good luck.

The quality of this product is not great. I had to return them to the store because the button on one stop working. The return policy for Cobra is not threat great either. They will only replace the item with another one of their horrible items instead of giving a refund.

The range on the radios are not accurate. They’re only good for about 50 yards. I would not rely on this product for hiking or any wilderness adventures.

Range is deceiving. I have not purchased the radios but sell radio communications equipment. The 28 mile range advertised should have an *If one person is on top of a mountain and the other person is in the valley below with a clear line of sight.

The radios are most likely 1 or 2 Watts max which will give varying ranges depending on what is in between the two radios and if there is any interference on the frequency being used. Talking from car to car on the highway or across the yard to around / in the house is the most suitable use.

Please do not purchase expecting 28, 10, or even 5 miles in most situations. I am sure they are fine for what they were made for, just don’t want anyone falling for the pipe dream of a 28 mile range.

So I’ve owned and used these radios for about a month now and have tried out most all of the features and found them very user friendly. The first thing most people want to know about is the range. First of all, ALL radios sold have exaggerated claims on their maximum range, period! In a perfect setting maybe they will work for 28 miles but you will NEVER be in a perfect setting.

I used them in a huge factory building with lots of walls and machines in the way and they worked without any issues and have a nice loud volume too. We used them for 8 hours solid at a time and the battery life was barley down to 3/4.

They could easily be used for several days without charging. Now for outside use. My nephew and I tested them in a typical urban neighborhood for a little over a mile before they started to break up a little in transmission.

This was with many, many houses and trees in between us. Second test was in nearly perfect line of sight. Again over nearly a mile and 1/4 the sound was good and just starting to break up a bit. We also tried them while out mountain biking in the woods with elevation changes near 200 feet and had no problem talking in a 200 acre riding area.

For what I paid for these I am very happy with them. They have decent features and work like they should. If you need more range then use your cell phone, but for most recreational uses I have encountered they work great and have exceptional battery life.

If I had 1 complaint it would be that the charger needs to be plugged into a powered USB port to charge. I rarely have my computers on for more than an hour or 2 at a time so to charge I found a cheap wall plug in USB power supply that cost like $5 to use as a standalone charger.

Want a radio you can hand to anybody and they don’t have to mess with the extra features? Get this one. Single power output level – high – and nothing extraneous to get in the way. For an unlicensed FRS radio, these have the longest range you can purchase and always operate at maximum range.

I’m a rock climber and I use these walkies to communicate between my climbing partners and I when we’re pitched over the side of a cliff. For my first trip using these walkies, we went climbing at Lion’s Head Ontario.

My climbing partner dropped one of my walkies straight down some 20 metres where it hit the rocky ground and bounced off into the bushes. Luckily, another climber below was able to find it and I was able to hoist it back up on the loose end of my rope.

Miraculously, the walkie survived fully functional with only a couple of minor scratches. Believe me when I say that these radios are indestructible. On top of all that, these are easy to use, have a good range and sound clear.

Weather report feature, flashlight, and AA battery compatibility are great additional features.

Dont let everyone description fool you!!! These only have a 2 mile max range in normal conditions! The 35 mile is claimed from a mountain top to a valley floor. Nobody shows a picture of the box for this reason! Its deception.

I have a $20 set of motoralas that work just as good as these and the flashlight they mention is an absolute joke! Its half as bright as a cell phone light. I don’t understand the high price for a cheap set of walkies??? I assumed for the price there would be some great features! So let down.
