It’s almost time for Halloween and what better way to enjoy the holiday than by visiting a haunted house? This may not be an activity for younger children or the faint of heart, but after weeks of planning costumes for the kids and taking them out trick-or-treating, don’t you deserve a little fun of your own?
We’ve checked out some of the nation’s biggest and best haunted houses and here are our top 5:
Pennhurst Asylum (Philadelphia, PA) – As the name suggests, this was once a real mental institution and the remaining 100-year-old building is said to be very haunted. In fact, it was even featured on Ghost Adventures, Ghost Hunters and Celebrity Ghost Stories. If you dare, you can go inside and see for yourself – are the spirits of the patients of the past still roaming the halls?
Headless Horseman (Ulster Park, NY) – What’s scarier than a corn maze late at night? Not much! Imagine trying to navigate your way with the moonlight as your guide and then following it up with a haunted hayride and a tour through six haunted houses. That’s what Headless Horseman offers as well as side shows, a gift shop and even a few restaurants (if you’ve still got an appetite after all of that screaming!).
Dead Acres (Columbus, OH) – This haunted house definitely takes it up to the next level. Not only will patrons witness simulated suicides, they can also watch a demon being born. If you can handle those types of images being etched into your memory, then this attraction is perfect. It is definitely not for the faint of heart.
Terror Behind the Walls (Philadelphia,PA) – In addition to staging five different terrifying areas, this attraction is inside an actual haunted location – the Eastern State Penitentiary. It would be terrifying even without the frightening fanfare. Patrons may find themselves facing angry undead prisoners, demented prison doctors, or evil experiments in 3D.
Netherworld (Atlanta, GA) – this unique haunted house is so noteworthy that it was actually used for the set of Zombieland and has been featured on the Today show and the Travel Channel. Visitors praise the highly detailed set as well as the inventive monsters (a killer mermaid for example). For these reasons, Netherworld is regularly included on lists of the best haunts in America.
