When it comes to Labor Day travel, the good deals tend to only show up during the last days of August. While it doesn’t leave a lot of room for planning, it can mean amazing deals if you are flexible.

Here are some suggestions for making the best of this last fun summery weekend before fall.

Package Deals

The big online travel sites (like Orbitz, Travelocity and Travel Zoo) are featuring last-minute Labor Day packages that are entirely worth considering.  They include airfare and hotel but can also often fall into themes such as white water rafting or sailing the Caribbean or checking out SeaWorld in San Diego.  The dog days of summer are a great time to find your adventurous spirit before the cold winter months roll in!

Discount Flights and Hotels

You might have to fly out on a Saturday and return on a Tuesday but there are some great fare deals on most airlines.  If you don’t have your heart set on a certain destination, check out the sales first and let that dictate where you roam.  The same is true for hotel rooms.  Unless you absolutely must stay in certain chains, be open to the options.  You could end up finding a new go-to location!

Vacation Rentals

Whether you’re traveling in a small or larger group, consider a vacation rental.  They tend to be an inexpensive alternative to hotel rooms and can be a lot more convenient.  Most feature full kitchens, laundry facilities and enough room for everyone to stay under the same roof.  Rentals in sunny locales sometimes include private pools and hot tubs.  It doesn’t get much better.

Go Car-less

It is entirely possible to find discount prices on rental cars but why not skip that all together?  Pick a city that is pedestrian-friendly with a decent public transportation system.  It will save you a lot of money on gas, insurance and parking and will allow you to really see and experience your surroundings!

Pay Attention to Trends

Trends are important when trying to find the best deals in great locations.  A simple internet search will yield results for how certain destinations are being ranked for this year’s Labor Day weekend.  Here is the ranking for Orbitz:

  1. Las Vegas
  2. New York
  3. Chicago
  4. Cancun
  5. San Francisco
  6. San Diego
  7. Seattle
  8. Atlanta
  9. New Orleans
  10. Boston

Whatever you decide to do with the upcoming Labor Day weekend, kick back and enjoy these last days of summer.  You’ll be bundled up and wishing it was warm again in no time!
