As with previous releases, Apple is being extremely tight-lipped about the iPhone 6. We have yet to learn the release date or how the phone will be different from the iPhone 5s. We can, however, make some pretty educated guesses based on past trends and leaked information. Here’s what we know so far.

Release Date

It is very likely that the iPhone 6 will be released in September 2014. There is a planned iPhone event on September 9, 2014 and, if it’s not unveiled at that point, it’s almost certain that a date will be announced.  It’s unlikely that it will be released much later than October, though.

Larger Size

One of the things that Apple’s largest cell phone competitor, Samsung, has been targeting is the fact that users want larger screens on their phones. The iPhone display size went from 3.5 inches to 4 inches when the iPhone 5 was introduced and it’s expected that the iPhone 6 will come in two sizes – 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches. That’s a huge leap in terms of size. It’s unclear whether both models will be released at the same time.

Durable Screen

Anyone who has owned a smartphone knows the sheer terror of dropping it, worrying that when you pick it up, the screen will be shattered. The quality has improved on all cell phones recently but rumors suggest that Apple is taking it a step further by outfitting the iPhone 6 with highly durable sapphire crystal displays.

Updated Design

From the looks of the leaked images, the iPhone 6 will adopt a slimmer, sleeker design with a thinner chassis. The iPhone 5s is 7.6mm thick whereas the 4.7 inch iPhone 6 model is reportedly only 6.9mm thick and the 5.5 inch version will be 7.1mm thick. That’s a pretty decent difference.

It also appears as though the newest phones will have rounded, tapered edges rather than the traditional boxy look we all associate with iPhones. Some say it looks more like the iPad mini because it also features pill-shaped volume buttons. One thing that could be particularly cool would be the backlit Apple logo on the rear shell of the phone.

Also, although they took a chance and went plastic with the iPhone 5c, it sounds as if the iPhone 6 will go back to its roots and be made of very thin metal.

Are you waiting for the iPhone 6? Could this be enough to bring Android users over to Apple?  Is this a good change or is Apple beginning to lose their identity?
