Buy local, buy what is in season. It’s a chant we hear often, especially during summer. When the farmers markets begin to fold up their tables and leave our sunny days of big harvest behind it can be tough to know what is in season.  It is even harder to know how we can use it in our daily life.  Find the surprisingly sweet bounty that will keep you beautiful, as summer turns to fall, right here.

September has the best of both seasons. Fresh, stone fruits from summer and delectable berries are still around as well as the earthier pumpkins and apples already ripe for the picking. Blackberries, nectarines, pears, plums and blueberries mix with red onions, broccoli, figs and French beans. And don’t forget curly kale, cucumber and artichokes. Here’s you can incorporate them into your beauty routine.

Blackberry Facial Mask

Bank on the natural salicylic acid in blackberries for glowing, clear skin this fall.

Ingredients: ¼ cup fresh blackberries, ¼ cup plain yogurt.

Mash up blackberries. Mix the berries into the yogurt.  Apply the mask to your face. Leave on for 10-15 minutes.  Rinse with warm water.

Black Fig Moisturizing Mask

Figs make great desserts and snack foods, especially when combined with dates. Did you know they make an excellent facial moisturizer?

Ingredients:  1 fig, chopped, 1 tbsp. of fresh lemon juice, 1 tbsp. plain yogurt.

Blend the figs and yogurt together in a blender.  Add lemon juice and mix again.  Apply a thin layer of the mask to your face.  Leave on for 10 minutes.  Rinse with warm water.  You can apply this mask in the morning or at night.

Apple Crisp Scrub

Apples really do a body good. When it comes to autumn we like to gobble up a bushel basket of apples and bring the crisp air into the kitchen with an old fashion but always tasty apple crisp.  Using apples you can DIY an apple crisp exfoliant.

Ingredients: ½ of one apple, chopped. ½ cup oatmeal, 2 tbsps. Walnuts, crushed, 2 tsps. Honey, ¼ tsp. cinnamon,  1 tsp. fresh lemon juice, 2 tsps., raw turbinado sugar.  *If you have sensitive skin then omit the lemon juice and cinnamon.

Combine the apple, oatmeal, walnuts, honey, cinnamon and lemon juice in a blender and blend it about 30 seconds.  It will be a thick paste.  Using a warm, wet washcloth let it rest on your face for about two minutes.  Quickly mix the turbinado sugar to the apple mixture.  Apply to face and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.  Before removing the apple mixture, gently rub it into your face in a circular motion.  Use warm water to rinse.
