Ahoy friends! Trends come and go but the nautical trend seems to come back year after year with an updated twist each time. A smart trend, nautical works on every size, complexion, and age group.  It also adds some wardrobe staples to your closet that will be around for years to come.  It is a win-win combination.  Let’s set sail and figure out how to turn what you may already own into a gorgeously sea-worthy look.

The Basics

Take a look at your closet. Do you have a navy blazer? How about white bottoms in Capri style, jeans or shorts?  Maybe a striped top in navy, red or black and white?  Do you own anything with gold buttons?  I bet you do!  All of these items can be mixed and matched to create a nautical look in a flash.  Update the look for 2014 by throwing in a sequin tank in white or navy.  Find a cute striped dress in a cut that flatters you at ModCloth – where nautical is taking over the pages.  J Crew, Ann Taylor, Lands’ End and many other stores offer these basic striped tops, boat neck-style shirts, shorts with gold buttons or sailboat embroidered shorts every year like clockwork.  Pick up one or two items to freshen up your spring staples.  Now is the time to break out the fun sailor style pants, with or without the buttons down the front.  Wedge heels with rope soles and sweet ballet flats with gold accents tie the look together in a pretty and tailored way.

Color Code

The colors for the nautical look are simple and primary.  Bright red, navy, white and yellow are no fail safe zones.  Beef it up with black or incorporate some of this year’s color updates by mixing in a striped shirt in coral, hot pink or mint. Ice blue (a big trend for Fall/Winter 2014) is another safe update that will work for a long time just like a vibrant sunny yellow hue.  Both are perfect for transitioning from winter to spring too.  When it comes to jewelry gold or silver are the go-to metals to wear and accent your outfit with.

Anchors Away

The accessories department is where you can have the most fun with the nautical look.  It is also a spot you can find trends on the cheap.  Keep your look timeless with gold cuff bracelets, bangles or links.  A chunky gold link bracelet rules right now and works perfectly with this style.  Adorn yourself with rope bracelets accented in gold or tiny anchors on chains and in pendant style.  Inexpensive websites like Groopdealz, Sassy Steals, Jane.com or Forever 21 offer daily deals on nautical-themed jewelry almost all- year long.
