Make Your Make-up and Skincare Pull Double-Duty

As a beauty writer I encounter many products, all of them claiming to be unique and be something that you cannot live without. I’m a mom to three and I travel frequently. I want my make-up and skincare to perform what I like to call beauty double-duty. Finding those balms, creams, liners, sticks and lotions is easier said than done. To simplify my life and yours I created a list of my favorite make-up and beauty items that go beyond their original intent.
Skin Deep
- Cetaphil – Why does Cetaphil rock? For so many reasons beyond dermatologists recommending it and celebrities claiming to use it. It’s perfect for all skin types and you can find it at your local drugstore or grocery store in a pinch. You can use it on your face or whole body as a wash. But did you know that you can use it dry to clean off your make-up at the end of the day? Indeed. The residue works as a gentle moisturizer.
- Coconut Oil – The fragrance may not be your thing but if you can move beyond that you have yourself quite the perfect little product. Use it as an eye make-up remover, night cream or all over moisturizer on your body. It soaks into skin fast and gets rid of calluses on feet over time.
- Shea Butter – Shea Butter feels fantastic on your skin and it is good for it. It doesn’t stop there. Got a paper cut? Put some Shea Butter on it. Use it on flyway’s to calm that ‘do down. It softens cuticles, sets eyebrows, and works as a diaper crème and for chapped lips. Shea Butter might just be the new Windex.
In the (Make-Up) Bag
- Nars Highlighter – While a highlighter might not be on everyone’s list or in their make-up bag it is more than a one trick pony. Using the Nars Highlighter as an eye shadow is a great trick in a fix. It blends well and brings out the eyes in a subtle way. Adding a bit to your daily lotion can also help accentuate your skin and give it a gorgeous glow.
- Sally Hansen Complete Salon Manicure – This one goes beyond double-duty and puts in a triple shift. It is a base coat for protecting nails, a gorgeous color lacquer and then glossy enough and strong enough because of a top coat built in. Great for travel and everyday use.
Want more simple, non-product specific tips? Your lipstick, especially a pink one, can double as a blush or add some color to your eye lids. Foundation mixed with face lotion works as a light cover-up. Vaseline works in a pinch to groom eyebrows or lashes if mascara isn’t handy. Experiment a bit and your wallet will thank you.
