Tuxedos and Bows: Fresh Winter Style

winter style

Don’t drown yourself in oversized sweaters this winter season – keep your sense of style with these winter trends.

Winter weather is finally here, and it looks like it’s going to stay.  You might already feel like burrowing into a big cozy sweater, wearing your fleece and wool socks 24/7, but don’t abandon your style just yet.  Check out the latest in winter trends.

By Day

Color blocking is still strong this season. Designers are using it on everything from cocktail dresses to sweaters and dress pants.  Be strategic about it and you can take this trend and buy pieces that play up a contrasting dark and light color coding to give off curve-enhancing appeal.  Narciso Rodriguez line for Kohl’s is a perfect example of this trend.

Blouses with a soft bow are both chic and ladylike.  They can be worn to work or played up for a night out.  The draping of the bow from the neckline down also offers a nice slimming effect, making it a winter wardrobe staple.  It’s a nice alternative to the straight-laced button down.

Basics are back big time.  The classic pencil skirt (above the knee, not below) paired with a pair of jeweled colored pumps gives a stunning effect and looks great with a thinly belted cardigan. Dress up a crew neck sweater if you add a colorful statement necklace to it.  JCPenney has a wonderful array of brightly colored, soft sweaters to work in this trend.

By Night

Tuxedo style pants and shirts are back.  Whether it is a complete outfit, or you simply mix and match the pieces with other items of clothing, the tuxedo works well for any holiday party, especially New Year’s.

Faux Fur is big this winter and what better time to use it than during the holiday season?  Faux fur embellished collars add warmth and style to utilitarian winter coats.  Fur gives an air of decadence that our wallet might not possess – but faux fur is certainly affordable.

As always the LBD (little black dress) can be worn to almost any event.  Adding accessories or a clutch purse in metallic shades can keep you looking cool.  Banana Republic is all in with this cool style. Try adding a necklace or chunky bracelet from Charming Charlie’s in an emerald green or turquoise blue for a bright and festive look.

Hair & Make-up

This season keep hair and make-up simple.  Bejeweled hair is in but less is more.  A small clip on the side of your updo (you can keep the top knot this winter) or to hold back a bit of your hair from your face in glossy waves is the perfect without overdoing it. Lining your eyes with black can be just the right effect.  Bold red lips with minimal make-up are another good bet that is both classic and now.
